As the book opens, Melody, the younger sister, is visiting her older sister, Serena, marveling at and enjoying her happiness. Their father had married Serena to a "suitable" man who turned out to be what many older folks in my youth called a "house devil" - charming in the presence of others but abusive (physically and/or emotionally and/or psychologically) behind closed doors. When Wesley died suddenly, Serena couldn't truly mourn because of the relief at being free. She has now been married for 2 years to Paul, a blacksmith and a tradesman, something her father abhorred when it came to his daughters marrying. He won't respond to his elder daughter's letters, nor talk to her.
Melody has an adventurous streak, and wants to travel and see new things. She has secretly been keeping company with a young traveling merchant and has secret plans to leave with him in a week or 2. She has no plans to marry right away, only if they both decide it is something they want.
When she returns home after her visit with her sister, her father is waiting for her. His older sister has written from Texas to say she is very ill, not well enough to make the trip to Chicago, and needs help with the general store she runs and in general until her health improves. Melody loves her Aunt Hannah, but wants to travel with Adrian, but her father gives her no choice, buying her a ticket that allows her less than 48⁰ to get on the train from Chicago to Bright Ridge, Texas. She rushes around, and pushes her luck with maybe missing the train to find Adrian and explain to him what has happened. He tells her not to worry, he'll wait for her. Serena finds her and chivvies her along so she doesn't miss the train, and to have a chance to say goodbye in person.
When she finally arrives in Bright Springs at her aunt's house on the edge of town, she finds her aunt weary from coughing and out of the tea she gets from her doctor, so she goes to find Main Street and the clinic to get more. She also is tired from the trip, and she realizes she needs information from the doctor in order to look after her aunt. She thinks he's cold and rude, he thinks she's questioning everything he's done for her aunt as if he's done something wrong and as if she figures her coming from the Big City makes her smarter than he. She does get the information she needs, though, and he's glad she is there for her aunt Hannah.
They do become friends the first day she opens the store after realizing the girl who had run the store for her aunt before her had entered no financial transaction information anywhere, no stock information, had never dusted or swept the place, and just went into the back to get things for customers. Melody had cleaned up a bit before opening the doors, and soon found out what she was expected to know v. what she did - and didn't - know. Charlie came in and suddenly, things the customers came for were on the counter, and she was taking a list of supplies customers wanted. When the day finally ended, she realized who had been such a help, and realized her first impression was as wrong as her aunt said it was. When they finally realized what had happened wasn't what either of them thought, they were able to be friends.
Charlie ended up helping her replace worn shelves after having gotten stock onto the shelves in front that were still OK, after Melody cleaned them, and soon she had the hang of running the store. Her aunt had explained a cryptic comment made by a girl who'd guided her to main street her first day there.
Her aunt's recovery is slowed at one point by damo weather and lungs weakened by damp weather...and her recoveey slows accordingly. She got the story about the patient who died, whom Charlie is blamed for.killingnthrough carelessness by the greedy doctor in town who overcharged before Charlie came with his lower fees, from Aunt Hannah. The story of another woman who'd been mentioned by others, she learned from Charlie himself. He begins loaning her books about medical subjects and finds her questions insightful and her mind like a sponge.
She comes up with an idea to defend Charlie, but with new rumors swirling straight out of the mouths of Charlie's enemy, it is getting more dangerous to side with Charlie, with bands of hoodlums harassing anyone who tries. Will Melody pay a price for her attempts to exonerate Charlie...has her mouth written a check she can't cash? Will their friendship evolve into something else? Will she leave for Chicago and Adrian as soon as her aunt is stable, or will she stay in Bright Ridge...and if she stays in Bright Ridge, for whom will she stay, Aunt Hannah only, or her aunt and someone else?
This is a well written story. There are some errors...for example, it's train fare, not train fair, but that's likely a typo from using a word processing spelling and grammar checker. They pick the wrong homonyms way too often. The other error is not putting an open quote before the first word of every paragraph in a discourse of multiple paragraphs from a single character (it serves as a reminder to the reader that it's not just a new paragraph, but a new parahraph in the character's discourse). Close quotes are only used at the end. Another frequent error like this that I see in way too many books in handling quotation marks is how to deal with a phrase that interrupts the quotation. Unless an exclamation point or a question mark is needed, a comma is used instead of a period to show that the quotation will continue on the other side of the interrupting phrase, and in all cases, close quotes go after the end punctuation. On the other side of the interrupting phrase, a comma should precede the continuation of the quote, and unless the first word is the start of a new sentence or a proper noun, the first word in the continuing quote should be a lower case letter. When the quote is finished, the appropriate punctuation should end it and a closed quote mark be placed after it. With how often I see this error and the other, I wonder if it is no longer taught in 8th or 9th grade English anymore. I know that I knew how to handle those quotes in my early high school career. If potential authors do a search on how to handle quotation marks in multi-paragraph dialogs, there should be help on the Web.
This was a bit slowing to my reading because the cue for a new paragraph of discourse was missing, but it didn't slow me that much. The story itself is of 2 sisters saved from their father's well-meaning attempts to arrange proper marriages (by his definition) for his daughters, and the salvation of the younger from a scandal. How that comes about for the younger sister is the main thrust of the book. While most extended epilogues are nice but not really necessary, in this case, I highly recommend reading it.

Melody wants to lead a life of adventure and travel. Unfortunately, her widower father has his sights on arranged marriage with an "appropriate man of suitable financial standing" which will mean an unhappy marriage for Melody. She is looking to escape her boring town with Adrian, a traveling salesman who is good-looking and has an eye for beautiful women. Melody is asked to go take care of her aunt while she recovering from an illness in Texas and Adrian agrees to delay his departure until her return. When Melody arrives in Texas, she meets Dr. Charlie Noble. Charlie is noble, upstanding, compassionate and sensitive. He doesn't appreciate Melody's "city ways" and condescending attitude. Fortunately, Melody's aunt encourages her to give Charlie a second chance because the man Melody describes is not the doctor she knows. Despite many trials, misunderstandings, and a town against Charlie, they develop a strong friendship which turns into love. This is a wonderful read which great character development. It was such a sweet read and hard to put down!

A great story of Melody Benson who had a heart of adventure. Her father was very stern and she wanted to leave her boring town. In comes Adrian, a flashy young man spinning tales of his travels. Melody wants to leave and travel with him but her aunt in Texas becomes ill and Melody’s father sends her to Texas as a caretaker. Dr. Charlie Nobles is her aunts doctor and faces hostility from another cruel doctor and his friends. Melody and Charlie fall in love and she is kidnapped but rescued. This is a great story, and Dr. Gerald Banks know how to work a crowd. Unfortunately, he's never met Melanie Benson. It's not love at first sight for Melanie and Dr. Charlie Noble. Charlie is what his last name implies, noble. Charlie and Melanie develop a really deep friendship that eventually turns to love. The villain is vile and as the plot thickens our heroine truly rises to the challenge. The climax is exciting and the characters are well-written. This is an adventurous love story and I enjoyed reading it.

great western romance

This is the story of a young lady that just wanted to go out and see the world. This is the future she had planned with a traveling salesman. He had agreed to take her with him when he left town and if they got along good enough he might marry her. Little did she know that her father was sending her from Chicago to Texas to go help care of his sister that was Ill. When she arrives her Aunt ask her to go to her doctors clinic and get her some herbs for her cough. At first they did like e@ch other at all.

Great Story

This story is about one greedy doctor, Dr Gerald Banks and what he does to try and ruin the reputation of the new doctor, Dr. Charlie Noble, in town. He does this because Dr. Noble allows his patients to pay in ways that they can afford, instead of forcing them to pay his high rates. When Melody comes to town to help her Aunt Hannah, she ends up falling for the good Dr and helps find a way to put the rumors to rest. You need to read this fast moving western story about greed and how a greedy person never wins. Plus it is also about finding true love.

Melody Benson's father plans to marry off his daughters as soon as they are of age. Melody wants none of that and seeks a way to avoid it. Opportunity comes when he aunt out west needs help, and Melody is sent there. She meets Charlie Noble, her aunt's doctor, and thinks he is pretty full of himself, and questions whether he is even treating her aunt properly. Charlie has a secret, Melody has a secret. This is a good read, fun seeing how everything plays out, and all the action that happens. A good Carol Colyer book.

Carol Colyer gives us a feisty heroine in this book. Melody jumps at the chance to go help her aunt in Texas rather than chance her father springing an arranged marriage for her. Leaving Chicago, her sister, her “suitor”, and life as she had known it, she finds herself in over her head with her very ill aunt, a failing store and Charlie, her aunt’s doctor who seems to have issues with the town. I loved this story. We have romance, humor, mystery and danger. I enjoyed this book.

Clean historical romance

I enjoyed reading this story about a young woman who travels out West to help her ailing aunt. She meets the young doctor and thinks he is cold and standoffish. Will they ever be at least friends?

adventures can be found most anywhere

Fun to read with lots of adventures happening. Melody found out that we don’t all find our adventures by leaving home and traveling. Sometimes we find adventures within the towns we live in. Loved the characters and their stories

Two Doctors in Town

Melody came to town to help her aunt rather than stay in Chicago and be forced into marriage by her father. Charlie was a doctor caring for her aunt but her first impression was not good. How could her aunt out up with such a man for her doctor?
