Trust me, there is life and love (and plenty of laughter) after divorce, even when your ex is one of Australia’s highest profile sport stars.
Actually, I Don’t Like Cricket Or Blow Jobs ! (And to be honest, I suck at both.) Yes, that was what I originally wanted to call this book. But then I realised that some women like cricket. Also, reading this in front of your inquisitive seven-year-old could lead to some awkward conversations. So, in stepped Currently Between Husbands to save the day and any blushes.
Having a relationship in the spotlight is hard enough, but in Currently Between Husbands , Cathrine Mahoney details the unique experience of breaking up with one of Australia's highest profile sport stars. Even for a self-confessed over-sharer, the breakdown of her marriage to rugby league player Andrew Johns was more public than she was used to. In her first book, the writer, podcaster and publicist provides a self-deprecating and hilarious look at her life – from fashion mistakes and early crushes as a kid growing up in Wales, to her years working with some of the world's biggest stars at Sony Music, to navigating life and love as a ‘solo’ mum, and coming to terms with hitting the big 4-0. Currently Between Husbands is the equivalent of having a chat with your bestie over a drink or two, with all the inappropriate confessions, front bottom revelations and teary moments that entails.
‘Desperately funny, fearless and full of heart.’ Meg Mason, author of Sorrow and Bliss
‘Strap in. You’re in for a fabulous ride. And you’ll be wishing (like I was before I knew her) that she was your friend. It’s a bloody good book, and I didn’t want it to end.’ Amanda Keller OAM, radio and TV host
‘My all-time favourite movie is Bridget Jones’ Diary – to anoint a real-life version is a big deal – but Cathrine Mahoney is it Bridget to a tee. I’d pay to read a post it note she wrote, let alone a book. Cathrine’s ability to be funny, clever, relatable, self-deprecating and just so loveable is unlike anyone I’ve ever met. ’ Erin Molan, TV presenter, radio host and writer
Just gorgeous. Sarah McGilvray is right - she’s the best friend you wish you had. Cathrine is hilarious and just goes there with the stories that you’ve experienced but perhaps haven’t shared with anyone or only the very closest of friends. I devoured the book in two days and didn’t want to stop reading - even at 11:30 at night. She is classy to the end in sharing her story around her marriage ending. I loved it. Got me back into my reading groove.
I really enjoyed this continuously humorous emotional roller-coaster read. Admittedly, when the book was issued by my online bookclub, I was a little miffed and actually heard myself 'meh' outloud. Whilst I love memoirs and biographies, I have absolutely zero interest in sport, and a non-existent knowledge of public figures or personalities. I had never heard of this woman, or her husband. Her entire world is completely foreign to me. 'This months bookclub read was going to be a struggle'... But, I started listening to the audio book on my daily walk, then by 50% I made the switch to text, so I could finish it all on one sitting. Brilliantly written. Very funny, down to earth, honest and real. It was like 'reading' an extra long stand-up comedy routine, based on real life. Loved it! 😍
A self-confessed oversharer, Cathrine Mahoney writes of her marriage to a high profile Australian sportsman and working in the media industry. This is interspersed with humorous flashbacks to her childhood and youth in the UK. Mahoney's story is fast paced, self-deprecating and funny but I didn’t find myself laughing out loud like some other reviewers - even though I could relate to some of her fashion faux pas and embarrassing situations. It’s an easy read, written in a conversational style with a no holds barred approach- yet she respects boundaries where her ex-husband is concerned - while also protecting their son. I did like that about this book. An easy, amusing holiday read.
I liked the style of writing. The book is funny and hats off to Catherine to laugh it all off.
My gossipy self was looking for the reasons why her marriage with Andrew didn't last long. That was a big miss from the book. But at the same time, I appreciate that Catherine respected her relationship with Andrew and chose not to reveal it all.
What’s a great holiday read!! I loved Cathrine’s honesty, over sharing and humour. Having been through a divorce many (31) years ago, with two sons aged 8 &10, her stories are so relatable. For ANY woman going through separation and/or divorce this book is compulsory reading.
I finished this on audiobook in a day!! Such a brilliant listen, I couldn't turn it off! It’s not just about divorce, its about parenthood, love, and life- the highs and the lows!
And so funny!! I laughed so hard I had to cross my legs! 🤣🤣
Started and finished in the same day would be rude not to rate 5 stars. Such a great story of love, dating, divorce, career, parenting, friendship & family. Felt like I was chatting with a friend over coffee…. Only I didn’t say anything.
Currently Between Husbands is the post divorce book I didn't know I need but was damn glad I found! Cathrine is bloody hilarious and re-injected some much needed humour into my life. Would absolutely recommend.
Loved this book. So many laugh out loud moments. Brilliant read, thank you for sharing your story. Great yo know that your tinder moments are the same as mine. Lol.
Loved this book. Read it in one day and really enjoyed the laughs, interesting yarns and the heartbreak. Well done Kathrine. Going off to hear your podcasts while Im walking and gardening.
This isn’t the book I’d typically would read but omg I loved it! It was funny, and what a story it told! Catherine knows how to keep you interested in what she’s talking about for sure!
