Fairy tales are for children. That’s what Peter had decided, especially after a mysterious illness swept through his village, thrusting him into the harsh, very unmagical reality of adulthood. Following a difficult recovery and an even more arduous struggle with finding his footing in life after losing some of the people he cared about most, Peter’s world is rocked again with the arrival of a stranger who takes a special interest in his story.
Quirky and confident, Breck quickly pulls Peter out of the sheltered and safe, albeit monotonous, existence that he’s finally settled into. He discovers that letting go doesn’t mean forgetting the past, it means gaining a future. But what if that future also holds a bit of magic, too?
Fella Enchanted is a new adult fantasy mm romance.
S.O. Callahan has always been fond of sweet things, namely chocolate and love stories. When she's not writing or reading, she enjoys baking, visiting National Parks and Historic Sites, and traveling with her husband. They live in Georgia and have two very spoiled cats named Ozzy and Beau.

There is a sequel!
Fella Enchanted is set in a fictional 1890s Ireland where the human and fairy worlds exist side by side. In this novel we follow Peter who has survived a mysterious plague that struck his village hard. He lost almost everyone he cares for and is chronically ill from the infection. When he meets the new blacksmith, Breck, he finds himself pulled into a world of magic, curses and fairies.
Don’t ask me why but I got distinct Peter Pan-esque vibes from this book. It could be a coincidence. It could be a reimagining. Either way, I loved the world the author created in Fella Enchanted. Peter was a great character to follow and I constantly wanted to give him a hug. His grief for the family he lost, and his first love is a huge part of this book. All he wants to do is provide for the family he has left and like he is just the softest boy.
My favorite part of the book was getting to know all the fairies that make up the surrounding cast. Queer fairies are basically my kryptonite and this book has them in droves. Peter’s world is very cishet-normative, but he finds a freedom and escape in the fairy world where he can explore his attraction to Breck in safety. Overall, I highly enjoyed this NA fantasy and if you are looking for queer fairies this book is for you!
[I received a physical copy for an honest review] Fella Enchanted is a whimsically adult MM fantasy by author S.O. Callahan.
When a strange illness befalls his small village, Peter is the only one who survived having the illness. He lost half of his family and the boy he loved. He spends his days taking care of his family's horses and playing polo. When the new owner of the mill, Breck, takes an interest in him, his world changes. The fairy tales his young sister is fascinated with are very real, his life is all wrap up in magic, and it might determine his future. His touch, his smell, everything about him was a draw that I couldn't ignore.
Fella Enchanted has a whole cast of fantastic characters, from Peter's caring family to Both Peter and Breck's best friends, who are delightful. Our lead Peter is endearing, and you can feel his grief and struggle to overcome the people he loved and lost. Breck is charming and has big responsibilities, but still has a playfulness to his personality. His feelings for Peter are genuine and strong. There's much more steam in the story than I expected, but I enjoyed every single scene. They each held a meaning and strengthened the connection between the two main characters. There are steamy recollections of Peter's first times being intimate with his first love, Jamie. Then when him and Breck give into their attraction for each other their open door intimate scenes are passionate and 🔥🔥🔥.
This is single POV and I really wish we had been given Breck's perspective. Not that Peter's voice wasn't strong enough on his own, but Breck is going through his own struggles and I think it would have enhanced the story. Maybe book two will be from his POV or at least have his in addition to Peter's. "I'm going to need your help every day," I said , my voice barely above a whisper as I rested our foreheads together again, "to show me how to love you the best that I can."
Overall, Fella Enchanted by S.O. is a wonderful debut fantasy that ends with a happy for now, and I can't wait for book 2 because I need a HEA! It's filled with family, friendships, magic, Fae, wishes, endless cups of tea, fresh baked sweets, and believing in magic.
What a beautiful story and what a magical world. I love everything about this book.
I don't read much fantasy, and I'm not that big of a fan of fairies, but my god, this book was absolutely marvellous. The writing is so .. unassuming, I guess. So beautiful and flowy, the imagery is absolutely stunning.
The author managed to create the most caring and lovely characters ever. I particularly liked Henry, if I'm being honest. He's the best friend anyone could ever ask for, always supportive and trustworthy. He's also very funny and his interactions with Peter were everything.
But the main characters are Peter and Breck. Oh my. Their relationship is so.. magical and pure. But also tender and sexy. They meet, they get to gradually know each other, and then fall in love in the most precious way.
A special shout out to Finna, for always being the best. She's the MVP, no doubt.
What I loved about this book is how little conflict there is. Everything is so peaceful (well, after the plague that killed so many people, anyway). But really, there's no unnecessary drama, just people going about their business, meeting fairies and falling in love.
I teared up a few times, especially when things from Peter's past were brought up. His history with Jamie gutted me. And the revelation about his death made me sob for a few minutes. Anne's journey also made me very emotional.
Oh, I LOVED all the baked goods that were mentioned throughout the book.
I've started reading the second one as soon as I finished this one.
(Edit: Here to congratulate the author on [almost] 100 ratings!)
I really enjoyed this book! I’ve already downloaded the next one because I liked the characters enough to stick with them for a while longer. This book gave me everything I wanted. Romantic tension! Likable side characters! Swoony moments! Conflict! I finished the rest of the book in a few hours once it picked up. It turned out to be the queer fairy tale I hoped it would be. The characters were the best part for me! They were three-dimensional, complex in all the best ways.
Overall, I’ll be reading the next book and I think this author is on the cusp of something really, really great. I think their work is just gonna get better and better!
(OH! And it should be mentioned that this is *not* a re-telling of Ella Enchanted. It’s just a fun fairytale with a good amount of horse content.)
sat down with it last night and read the whole book in one sitting!! It was so good and at around the halfway point, I couldn’t put it down and had to know how it ended.
It’s a queer fantasy romance with fairies, chronic illness rep, and two very likable main characters. I’m very glad there’s going to be a sequel because I definitely want to know more about this world and see what’s next for Peter and Breck!
This was a such a light and warm read. A proper cozy fantasy: Low stakes and the “conflicts” aren’t conflicts for long. I loved it (even though I really don’t like horses).
Thank you @pridebooktours for the invite on this tour! I loved this debut book from @s.o.callahan, and I absolutely cannot wait to get to the next book in this series. ⠀ Fella Enchanted is set in a historical Ireland, where the fae live amongst humans. Peter, our MC, has survived a deadly and mysterious plague, but it has left him chronically ill and terribly lonely, after the loss of his family and his first love. The feelings of grief and loss were so poignant and bittersweet, my heart ached for Peter and his loss. ⠀ This was just such a sweet book. I adored Peter and Breck together. I loved them in the rain, like a lot. I love how Breck brought joy and some much needed lightheartedness back to Breck’s life. I also enjoyed the fae world and Breck’s friends, and I hope we get more of that in book 2. (I’d also love a POV chapter from Breck!) ⠀ If you like a fairy tale feel, sweetness and a bit of heat, a great group cast of family and friends, magic, wishes, and two very sweet gentlemen, then you should try this story! And the next book comes out Oct 21st, so this is the perfect time to get caught up and ready!
There’s so much to love about this indie romance novel. I loved the build up between Breck and Peter, I loved the setting and I loved that it was the kind of story that could make me smile and make me cry. Peter’s backstory was so well written that it made me tear up within the first forty pages! I look forward to their follow up story in Fella Ever After!
Every chapter of this book got me more invested. I should probably call it a romance with a mystery plot but the mystery is so intertwined into the fabric of the book that it demands equal footing.
We get everything that makes an engaging story: loveable characters, snappy best friends, and descriptions of a nature so wild it breathes with you on every page. I'm not surprised to learn that the author loves nature. It feckin' shows.
Also, Finna is just a ray of sunshine in general and I'm fiercely protective of her.
Shannon also has a way with words. The prose envelops you the same way fae magic flows and surrounds everything in the story.
No rating DNF at 15%. Just not interesting me. Also (small rant) falling off is a part of riding, and not falling off is not a sign of how good of a rider you are.
Ok, so this book is the CUTEST and COZIEST book I've ever read! Fella Enchanted is about a young man named Peter who lives in a small village. He is still recovering from a mysterious illness that unfortunately took the lives of most of his family members and the love of his life, Jamie, two years prior. But then he meets the new miller, Breck (*swoon*), and Peter's heart reawakens. But with Breck comes new discoveries and realizations as Peter learns more about the mysterious illness and what may have actually caused it.
I loved every second of this book! If I were to describe it in one word, it would be "gentle." Fella Enchanted takes place in a small village, and there are lots of descriptions of the scenery, from the forest to the river to the stables. It's giving cottagecore vibes!!! I loved Peter as a main character. He is so sweet and kind and cares a lot for his family and friends. And then there's Breck. I loved his quiet confidence and how much he took care of Peter 🥺 The two of them together was *chef's kiss* 💕 The plot and storyline were well done and I loved all the side character as well, especially Henry and Finna. I would love to live in Finna's cottage. Also, chapter 15 😭🫠🥹🥲❤️ It's my fav.
Overall, a gentle and beautiful and lovely and heartwarming book! I can't wait to read the sequel (YES PEOPLE THERE IS A SEQUEL) Fella Ever After! ❤️❤️❤️
Tropes ♡ MM ♡ Historical romance ♡ Romantasy ♡ Hurt/Comfort ♡ Idiots in love
After the majority of Peter's family is lost to a mysterious sickness that sweeps through his village and leaves him with a persistent, lingering cough, Peter quietly grieves his loss and persists in his training and polo playing. Until one day he meets the new miller in the village. A dashing man named Breck who is more than he appears and shows Peter that maybe magic does exist.
Wow this was a fun read. I read this as part of a group buddy read with the author and I loved every moment of it. The early loss of Jamie (Peter's first love) to the sickness (something that happens prior to the start of the book) left me heartbroken as you see flashbacks of his and Peter's time together. But coupling that with his new budding feelings for Breck and how they compliment each other is swoony as hell.
This is a lot of fun and very much worth a read. Plus there is a book two coming!
This book was fantastic, from the setting in late 1800's Ireland to the fantastic writing it was an utter joy to read!
We follow Peter who has been through it, after falling ill and losing not only his mother and father but also his first love he truly doesn't believe he will be happy again 😭 until one day a new miller moves to his village but Breck has a secret, he's a fairy.
As they get to know each other and more is revealed to Peter about what actually happened to him and his family and that the fairies live among the humans you truly become enchanted and quickly fall in love with both Peter and Breck 😍
Their relationship is so so sweet and I cannot wait to read the sequel "Fella Ever After" - I will protect them at all costs 🔥
I feel guilty for all of the books I've described in my life as "cozy," because THIS BOOK WAS THE COZY BOOK. I believe and accept that there were heavy themes in this book and even moments of actual danger, and yes a couple of moments that made me cry. All of these things can be true. But what I'm taking away from this book are Peter and Breck's absolute perfection and compatibility. I'm excited that the second book already exists because all of the little things that I felt were missing from this book, a little more understanding of the faeries, resolution for Anne, an HEA/HFN (hopefully an ever after though, considering the book is literally called Fella Ever After...... like come on...) have more space to be fleshed out over there. So I can just chill and be content in the melted puddle of contentment that this book has made me.
This book was a great queer romance. There were a bunch of twists and turns - I thought I knew where it was headed and then it surprised me. I appreciated the character’s journey and I really appreciated the author resisting some of the more common fairy tale tropes. This could have been a much darker, sadder story and it wasn’t. A lot of that had to do with the attitude of the character and the message of the book in terms of choosing happiness and recognizing it. Highly recommend!
Quite simply, I loved this story. The characters are well developed with their own flaws and unique personalities. The romance and passion are breathtaking and I love the relationship between Peter and Breck.
I feel like Breck's story/emotions could have been explored more but I still adored him as a character.
If you love fairy tale realism, with a M/M romance that is steamy, you definitely need to read this debut! Can't wait to see what happens next!
I adored this story. It was one of those comforting cozy reads to curl up with on a rainy day. Though it was not rainy today when I finished it, it was that way yesterday when I started it. I just finished another historical queer romance but they could not be any more different. While both gave me the warm fuzzies and both have a magic of their own one was a sort of utopia when it comes to acceptance of queerness in society and in this it was more rooted to how it is and was for that time. While that might be a sad thing I think how Peter finally came to peace with his identity and who he loved was depicted very beautifully.
Though this book ended on a good note I am glad there is a sequel for it and am looking forward to reading more abour Peter and Breck.
Ahhhhhh I loved this so much! Fella enchanted is set in unspecified ‘olden times’, but imagine ACOTAR vibes. If you’re a fan of Kellen Graves’ Prince of the Sorrows, then you’ll absolutely love this. Also a side of sports romance, because our MC Peter plays polo and trains polo ponies!
I thought the bff relationship between Henry and Peter was so sweet and supportive, especially in a world that doesn’t accept Peter being gay. I absolutely loved Finna - excited to learn more about her and also about Fallon. Peter and Breck are absolutely the cutest couple; although there is plenty of angst in the book, there is no angst in their relationship which I appreciate - it’s clear that they love each other and would do anything to be with each other.
I’m excited to hop straight onto the next book, Fella Ever After and find out what Orin is up too…
Just to be aware, trigger warning for miscarriages occurring to a key side character in this book which I wasn’t expecting and was a little jarring for me, but not unmanageable.
This was a very cute, very whimsical little read! I had no idea what I was about to discover but I had a pleasant time!
This is the kind of cozy with low stakes I can dig 🥹 I think I liked this more than I thought I would because the overall writing was very healing?! There are some very traumatic episodes happening, but they're dealt with a lot of care and attention so it's not as difficult to read. I did not find the inconsistencies and pace issues I usually struggle with, with light fantasy stories that have some heavy topics mixed with slice of life moments.
The characters are all also very lovely, minus one. Peter deserves the biggest hug ever, and I wish I could give him the confidence he is aiming for 🥲 in this house we also LOVE yearning!!! That was very much appreciated lol!
I am very curious about the various fantasy elements, and magical systems, so I wished for more depth in those fields. Like Peter, I also have questions because many were still left unanswered 🥹
The ending was a bit rushed in my opinion but I hear there's a second book already out so 👀
“Just because you don’t think about something anymore, that doesn’t mean it stopped being real.”
Enchanting and emotional, Fella Enchanted follows Peter Walshe after a terrible illness has killed the people that he loved. He is trying to navigate life after the darkness that swept through the village and bring some normality back to it.
And then he meets the new neighbour, who is anything but normal. Breck is unlike any person that Peter has ever seen, He may be just the person that Peter needs.
This book is magical and emotional. I found myself crying, smiling and gripping my kindle so tightly, I did not want to put it down.
Even by the end I just wanted to read more of their story and I'm excited to see what come next from the author! (I heard a possible second book is in the works 👀👀)
This is a beautiful fairy tale esque book that is so worth the read! For lovers of queer romances, fairy tales and horses alike, this is definitely the book to read!!
Fella Enchanted is a queer adult m/m set in a fantasy world inspired by 19th Ireland. Honestly I'd call this more of a cozy and light romantacy!
Before the start of the book there is a plague sickness that sweeps through the land and has killed a lot of people, including someone very important to the main character, Peter. Over the years of Peter's life, the sickness has really affected Peter both physically and emotionally and has shaped his young adulthood. But soon Peter finds a friend in Breck, the local miller, and their friendship blossoms into something more through the backdrop of a magical mystery.
I'm not sure if it will be just a duology or a longer series, but there will be a book 2! Here's what you can expect in Fella Enchanted:
- Horse boy - Fairies - Irish-inspired Fantasy - Friends to Lovers - Rolling green hills and fairy tale aesthetic
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
Well this was lovely. I’ve had this on my shelf since Christmas and finally dove in. I’m really loving soft fantasy romance, and this was no exception. The magic revealed in this book is fascinating, as it can’t be wielded by humans, but can affect their lives and all the beauty around them, and does so without notice most of the time.
I found myself easily immersed into Peter’s view of the world around him, and I experienced the twists he uncovers in his reality as he did, as well as his grief and pain. I really loved watching the slow bloom of his and Breck’s relationship, seeing Breck and all that comes with him through Peter’s eyes. There is so much beauty there as Breck shows Peter it’s okay to love each other as they are.
I’m so glad I have Fella Ever After to dive into now that I’ve finished reading this book! I definitely found myself wanting to see so much more of Peter, Breck, and Finna.
This was such a cute romantasy. My first male/male romance and I am a fan.
The MC is a young polo player with a big heart and a hilarious group of friends. Peter has experienced great loss and his story really touched my heart. I enjoyed watching his friendship with Breck turn into something more beautiful. There was some spice as well 😏🌶
This book has magic and whimsical beings without any heavy world building. I loved the setting: rolling hills, horse pastures, and a river. There was even a little danger and mystery in the story. I’m looking forward to the second book because I have some theories 👀
I found Callahan’s writing to be eloquent and easy to understand. I went through the pages quickly. If you’re looking for a light fantasy/ romance read, check this one out. Also available on Kindle Unlimited!
After reading the first chapter I worried this book was going to be dull and have a slow start. But I was already in tears by the end of chapter two. And after that, the pacing picked up and the story became quite fascinating. I’m glad there’s a second book because I need to learn more about these characters.
I am absolutely obsessed with the fairies and magic in this book. Nature is so powerful and this book really reminded me how much I want to start learning more about herbal remedies.
The love story was also really cute. And even though the main character couldn’t be openly gay, I was glad he had a best friend that encouraged him to be himself and do all the indecent things he was doing in the spicy scenes.
I liked this book but I feel like there was a lot of potential that it didn't quite live up to. I did feel immersed in the environment. The main character and his family and friends were complex enough to like. I also like how this book dealt with his chronic illness. The love interest was just just okay. I didn't get a lot of character from him. The romance was sweet but a little simple. The plot and ending were what brought this book down. The world was interesting but the plot really didn't do anything. And the ending just sort of happened. Overall it was a cute enjoyable book but not too amazing.
I picked up this queer romance because I've enjoyed Sarah Wallace's books and also liked the ones she co-wrote with Callahan. In Fella Enchanted, polo horse trainer Peter is recovering from an illness that killed nearly his entire family when he meets the intriguing new mill owner, Breck. But Breck is more than he seems, and he may hold the key to learning what really caused the plague that devastated the village...
Fella Enchanted is firmly in the realm of the sweet fairy tale romance, which can sometimes be hit or miss for me. I liked how the tragedy of Peter losing most of his family two years ago adds depth and complexity to the otherwise sweet and simple plot, and I think that Peter's lingering disability after his illness was well handled here. However, the prose itself was only middling, and I was lukewarm on the romance, which ran towards the youthfully inexperienced. (Also, I wish I could take the word "mate" away from romance novelists. Definitely a squick for me.)
What took this book from four stars to three stars for me was that despite clocking in at a longer than average romance novel at three hundred fifty pages, very little is resolved by the end of the book. I personally would have preferred a more focused action plot that meshed tightly with the romance, and this book was more inclined towards an aimless plot which covered little ground.
Rather more slice of life than I would prefer and only so-so execution. Not recommended.
Fella Enchanted by S.O. Callahan is a soft, queer historical fantasy set in late 1800's Ireland. Callahan draws upon lots of Irish folklore in Fella - specifically the fae myths - but the story never veers too far into the magic/fantasy elements. It's just enough to keep that mystical feeling and I loved it.
Every time I reflect on this book I smile. It's gentle, it's warm, the characters are so incredibly lovely - I think that's it's strong suit. Callahan doesn't build up an intricate fantasy plot; she spends her time creating characters with depth, dialogue that makes you chuckle or blush with the characters, and an atmospheric setting that you can feel in each scene. I felt so much affection for Pete, Breck, Finna, Henry, and Pete's family, which is exactly what I want in a story.
I can't wait to dive back in and get more of these characters in Fella Ever After.
3.75 this was very sweet and cute! This is a fairy tale set in Ireland about a boy and a fairy. Peter and Brock are just two sweet boys and watching them fall in love was delightful. I enjoyed the magical setting and the fantastical elements of the story. I loved Peter’s back story and how that set up the story. The side characters are all lovely as well. I’m not a huge fairy tale reader and sometimes the writing felt a little flowery to me, but I think that is kind of the point with this type of story.
I think there is a second book coming and I’m excited to pick that one up as well. All in all a great debut!
