Storm & Laila’s Sweet Valentine’s Romance Is About A Playboy CEO & A Materialistic Supermodel Who Fall In Love Amidst Photo Shoots & Fashion Shows. Their Steamy Story Has Some Laugh Out Loud Moments & Takes Place In The Cutthroat World Of Business & Fashion.
Storm Thornton, CEO of Thornton Enterprises, is trying to bring change to the company he inherited from his father. Although his father died four years ago, Storm still lives in his shadow. Storm’s great-grandfather had started the company, and his grandfather had turned it into a powerhouse. The last decade under his father’s charge had seen the company stagnating, but there remain those that are set in their ways and resistant to change.
Even now he hopes to do something that would make his deceased father proud of him in an effort to calm his own restless heart. But what he cannot do is run Thornton Enterprises in the same stern way his father had. Storm is light-hearted and loves to tease and make jokes. He wants employee satisfaction. And he wants to take the company to new heights.
Storm’s board is concerned about public trust, and they don’t approve of his playboy lifestyle – nor the kind of attention it garners. With members still loyal to his deceased father, Storm struggles to find his footing.
There was a dark side to Storm’s father that the public does not know about. Those that knew his father best might have had a slight notion of his drinking problem, but they would have no reason to suspect how cold and loveless his behavior had been toward his wife and son. Storm desperately wanted his father’s approval throughout the years, but never got it. He was always considered a disappointment.
Storm’s failure to please his father had led to self-loathing and an endless search for validation. In the absence of approval, he sought out ways to get the attention or emotional high that he craved. It got him in a lot of trouble over the years. Parties and brawls when he was younger eventually led to incessant flirting and his unrepentant playboy ways. He lacks impulse control and has little shame.
Storm tried college, but after a few years, he opted to live off of his trust fund instead. He had made a best friend along the way. Luke and his family are working-class but they have hearts of gold. They had become like family to Storm. He lost his own mother eight years ago, and since his father’s death four years ago, Luke and his family are all Storm has left.
Storm is excited about his recent purchase, but his board has reservations. Cupid’s Arrows is a departure from their norm, but it fits into Storm’s vision for the future. In his typical attention-deficit mode, Storm had forgotten all about the fact that his ex-girlfriend – the only relationship he ever had – is a model for the lingerie company he now owns. Between his ex and the other models that work for Cupid’s Arrows, the board worries that Storm’s playboy ways will end up in the tabloids and get the company embroiled in a scandal.
Laila Hunt is at the height of success since signing on to model for Cupid’s Arrows two years ago. The plus-size supermodel is the subject of gossip and the object of many men’s fantasies. Nevertheless, she does not date and lives a relatively quiet life. She is a nurturer, always trying to help those she loves. Since her mother died, Laila’s relationship with her younger sister Casey has been strained. The twenty-one year has a history of getting into trouble, and with time, it only gets worse. Laila tries to help, but Casey seems unwilling to make a change. Laila finds herself exhausted from the effort and feels used by an ungrateful sister.
The life of a model takes discipline, and Laila does not take her career for granted. She began modeling at age twelve, but her big break came about two years ago when she signed to model with Cupid’s Arrows, an iconic lingerie company. To relax, she spends with her best friend and bodyguard, Lexi. She also finds herself living up to the spoiled and entitled stereotype she is cast in because she indulges much too often in lavish shopping sprees. Her closets are filled with more than she could ever need. Although the shopping gives her a high, it is a short-term feeling. In the end, she feels guilty for the waste.
When the board proposes that Storm participates in the rebranding campaign for the newly acquired Cupid’s Arrows, he feels he has little choice but to cooperate. He is confident about the direction he is taking the company but knows that he must prove himself. That puts him in the center of things as the Valentine’s Day Fashion Show approaches. It brings him face to face with Jennika, who had broken up with him after eight months together. He also meets the breathtaking Laila Hunt, who teaches him the meaning of the word ‘rejection.’
Storm and Laila find themselves attracted to one another, yet Laila knows better than to fall for the meaningless lines of a devoted playboy. But as the Valentine’s campaign rolls on and work brings them together, eventually the walls begin to come down. Once Laila gets a glimpse of the man behind the mask, she realizes that Storm is worth the risk. And as Laila begins to open up to him, Storm finds himself strangely protective.
Storm and Laila have both struggled to help others in their lives, an effort that is emotionally trying. And they both turn to vice in the absence of healthy relationships in their lives. For Storm, it is women. For Laila, it is shopping. They both live under the public eye, and both come across as spoiled and shallow. Storm has much to prove to Laila, the public, the board, and himself. Laila has some lessons to learn as well. Together, this seemingly materialistic couple finds something deep and unexpected. They eventually find a happy for now ending.
Storm and Laila’s Valentine romance is a sweet story about a playboy CEO and a materialistic supermodel. They might not garner much sympathy initially, but as the story progresses, it becomes obvious that there is much more to their seemingly shallow lives. They both have huge hearts. Once they find some commonalities, their attraction to one another takes on a deeper meaning. With the support of one another, they both experience tremendous growth. Their story has a few laughs as well – and one scene, in particular, had me in stitches.
There are a few issues that merit mention. Note that I read the ARC version, so updated versions may read differently. The story occasionally feels inauthentic. The timeline is occasionally confusing, but it does not pose a major problem as the story takes place over a short period of time. There is a scene that hints at several things going wrong, but in the end, there is really just a single incident. This caused some confusion as I kept waiting for the next shoe to drop. Finally, the story begins to drag by the end. Even so, the characters remain likable.
On a technical note, I found that my purchased copy would not open in the Kindle Cloud Reader.
Storm and Laila fall in love amidst photo shoots and fashion shows in the cutthroat world of business and fashion in this steamy Valentine romance. The couple has great chemistry. First impressions are deceiving here as their materialistic facades give way to warmth and compassion. The plot is fairly simple. The characters are nicely developed. The story is told in first person. The POV alternates between Storm and Laila. I rate this book four stars.
