The laughter is nonstop as everyone's favorite greedy and selfish pug is sent to obedience school in this picture book from #1 New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Aaron Blabey. Pig was a pug and I'm sorry to say, after years of his antics it was now time to pay. Pig's bad behavior has finally caught up with him -- it's time for OBEDIENCE SCHOOL! Can this terrible pug ever be tamed? Not if he can help it... Rich with author-illustrator Aaron Blabey's signature rhyming text and unforgettable illustrations, Pig the Rebel is a laugh-out-loud story that follows the nine previous books in the series ( Pig the Pug , Pig the Winner , Pig the Elf , Pig the Star , Pig the Fibber , Pig the Stinker , Pig the Tourist , Pig the Slob , and Pig the Monster ).
Aaron is an Australian author of children's books and artist who until the mid-2000s was also an actor. His award winning picture books include Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon and the best-selling Pig the Pug.
In the field of acting, he is probably best known for his lead roles in two television dramedies, 1994's The Damnation of Harvey McHugh, for which he won an Australian Film Institute Award, and 2003's CrashBurn, before retiring from performance in 2005.
This book wasn't as funny as most previous installments, and Pig did not ride a motorcycle at any point in this book. I was really hoping for a motorcycle-riding bad boy vibe, but he just breaks out of obedience school.
It appears that this is the last book in the series. I've seen many authors attempt to end series and then come back with several more volumes, like poor Jeff Kinney, who will be writing Wimpy Kid books until he dies. I'll believe that this is the end when I see it.
Pig’s days of misbehaving are numbered it would seem! He is sent to obedience school to turn a new leaf, but not if he has anything to say about it! Blabey keeps the hilarity going with this ultimately very sweet adventure! Told in rhyme and with perfect opportunities for sound effects galore (no spoilers but there is a pretty big BOOM!), this is guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face. Take the opportunity to be silly with our mischievous Pig, and see if his spunky self can be tamed,
I'm afraid this series has come to an end (based on clues at the end)...
I think my favorite part of this installment (which was something my son picked up on) was where the obedience school teacher is listing Pig's flaws...and they all pertain to/reference previous books! Nice touch, Mr. Blabey!
Yes, this is a children’s picture book! It’s super well done. Clever rhyme, great illustrations. Sometimes I just need to read something like this to make me smile.
This came in my book fair and I knew it would be a top seller - one because it was a paperback and two because the kids love Pig. I read it to many of my classes as a promotion for our fair. I am not a fan of rhyming books, but the kids are the real judges and it was a hit with them.
Yet another rhyming fun book in the Pig the Pug series. In this one Pig has to go to obedience school, where he quickly snaps and convinces his cohort of misfits to break out. Much havoc ensues. Ages 4-8.
Another Pig the Pug story. Obedience school doesn't exactly work out for Pig. Will Pig ever learn to be nice? Will he go back to his old ways or turn a new leaf? Even though Pig the Pug may never become a classic, this latest installment will find lots of fans from those who already enjoy Pig's antics.
I fear this may be the last Pig book and I’m heartbroken😭 This book was probably the best instalment yet, as it was sleet of a culmination of all of Pig’s antics, which is also why I think it may be the final book in the Pig series.
As an adult who works in the kids section of a book store, I fell in love with the Pig series! I recommend it all the time, and I’m genuinely sad that the series may be complete :(
This book is about a Pug named Pig. This is one of many books about this character. In this adventure he is sent to obedience school because of his behavior. While he is at obedience class, he plans an escape with the other dogs. His escape causes quite a bit of trouble and Pig ends up losing all his hair. I won’t tell how that happens. In the end Pig is a changed dog.
There are a few different ways I would use this book in the classroom. One way would be to model word choice in writing. This book has amazing vocabulary and would be a great example for students to see how word choice can really affect a story. This book could also be used to learn some new words. As the book is read, students could identify words they do not know and those words could be discussed. The last way I would utilize this book would be to talk about rhyming words. There are a lot of rhyming words in this book so students could practice identifying them and thinking of other rhyming words.
I first heard about this naughty pug on a family vacation when I learned that my sister likes to read these books with her eight-year-old daughter. We enjoyed a few hearty laughs over this book and several others. Watch what happens when Pig gets committed to dog obedience school. Fun rhyming verses combined with vivid comic images will keep readers of all ages entertained! I can’t wait to see a TV show of this series!
In this story, I discovered a character that resembles a famous Australian comedian that my dad told me about, Dame Edna. If you don’t know her, you might want to look up her works after you finish this book. She will give you a good laugh.
Book: Pig the Rebel Author: Aaron blabey Genre: Picture books, Children’s Books Recommend: Yes Amount of Pages 32 My feelings:
I really enjoy children's books. And read them to my kids every night. But one thing I don't do is review them. Why I don't know, but I decided it was time to start.
We own every single book by this author. My son is obsessed with Pig the pug. And so am I, he is funny and always up to mischief! I love him. Highly recommend.

I've read a few of the other installments in this series, and they're cute and funny at times but not my favorite. This one especially. Something about the writing, just didn't seem super accessible to the readers that it's targeted to. Even as I was reading this to a group of kindergarteners, I found myself reading some specific word choices that felt a bit out of place for the story.
It has some of those fun moments where kids will love to scream the words with you, and the art is adorable and funny regardless. Loved the obedient school jailbreak, and the cover is great too.
It feels like this one might be the last in the Pig the Pug series as it has a "thank you" from Trevor and Pig in the back. Totally love this series and as a school librarian, I can honestly say that 12/13 year olds love these books as much as 5 year olds. There are very few picture books which have such universal appeal but these ones hold that rare honour. If this is the last, they will be very much missed.
Another great Pig the Pug book! Is this the last? I’m not sure because it seems like Pig has changed his ways. After all the havoc Pig has wreaked, he is sent off to Obedience School. He of course gets into some mischief and tries to escape but ends up practically blowing himself up. So now he looks like an actual pig 🐷 This experience was very eye opening to him and he has changed his ways.
I received an electronic ARC from Scholastic, Inc! Pig is finally sent to Obedience School as he has misbehaved so often. As readers will expect, this is not a smooth process. He rebels and leads an escape from class. Sadly, this causes a huge uproar and Pig bears consequences that finally make him think. Readers see a new Pig by the end of the book and hope it will last.
This appears to be the end of the series! Pig is a good boy at the end? No no no, that will never be, I have a pug, I know. If this is the last one, I am heartbroken, these are so wonderful. (I should mention that I am adult who has no children anywhere around, I've gotten them strictly for myself. And my pug.)
Another kid series book with an even more nonsensical storyline (and not in a good way!) and cringe-worthy attempts at rhyming patterns. I didn't find it funny & neither did the kindergartners I read it to!!! The attraction is the strange looking Pug that stars in this book & others in the series. I guess all books can't be a Mo Willems book 😄
Do pug dogs really change their spots (so to speak)? I won't spoil the ending, but a notorious pug named Pig is sent to obedience school for dogs after one too many catastrophes at home. Another winning book in the 'Pig the Pug' series, whatever happens, I sure hope this is not the last installment.
This is the end of the Pig series and I went into it without that knowledge. I would have guarded my heart, but I was struck unawares. When it ended there may have been a few tears.. So sweet and emotional. Really a perfect children’s book series. Also, I do read these to my toddler. I’m not just rocking out to Pig the Pug on my own.. usually. 😂😭
Time for obedience school, and of course, Pig is rebelling.
These Pig the Pug books are always fun and hilarious, and this one was no different.
Pig and his friends are supposed to be in school but make a run for it—naturally causing chaos and accidentally terrorizing the neighborhood along the way. Fun, fun, fun!
Another 5-star read picked by my amazing daughter!
Pig has really reached the limit this time. He gets sent off to obedience school and makes a break with his new pals. Some unexpected things happen and result in a surprise ending! Highly recommended for Pig fans in Grades K-2.
Pig the Pug's bad behavior has finally caught up with him, and he is sent to obedience school. But Pig isn't having any of that nonsense and he leads a rebellion against his overbearing instructor, and breaks out. Pig's rebellion doesn't get him very far and once again he gets his comeuppance.
When I saw the cover of this book, I knew that it was a must-read this summer! We love Pig the Pug in my house and this one was no different. It was adorable in every way possible. Pig is a rebel indeed!
