"After four, I quit counting. What's the point if you know it isn't going to stop?"
Sadie is jealous. Why wouldn't she be? Her life is falling apart. Meanwhile, her new neighbor is everything she is not.
Ann is perfect—the kind of woman everyone loves to hate—and a best friend to die for. She hosts over-the-top dinner parties, takes parenting to an entirely different level, and makes ambition look sexy as hell.
Sadie learns quick: the best way to cure jealousy is to befriend it. She also learns there's more to her new friend than meets the eye. She's patient, she's kind, and possibly a serial killer.
It isn't until Ann's proclivities hit a little too close to home that Sadie has to ask herself how much she's willing to overlook in the name of getting what she wants.
Exquisitely paced, Her is an unnerving and electrifying psychological thriller about jealousy, passion, and the dangerous places desire can take you. Full of enough tension and twists to make even the most seasoned suspense reader break out in a cold sweat, it keeps you guessing until the very last page.
Grab a drink. Settle in. I’ve got a quick story for you.
It starts, as most good stories do, with someone chasing a feeling.
Picture a Texas writer surrounded by five kids, two literary dogs, one unreasonable cat, and a partridge in a pear tree—all orbiting a household powered by caffeine, chaos, and sheer willpower.
Instead of getting into trouble in real life, she decided to invent it on the page. (Healthier for everyone. Mostly.)
She didn’t set out to write the perfect thriller, but she has been chasing a certain feeling for years—chasing the perfect story.
The kind that makes you miss your exit, burn your dinner, or stay up later than you meant to. The kind that makes a reader say “just one more chapter” and lie to themselves beautifully.
Some writers chase awards. Britney chases that feeling.
You might call it persistence. She calls it passion—the only real secret ingredient behind thirty-plus books and counting. Always reaching for whatever that elusive green-light moment is.
She hasn’t caught it yet. But that’s half the fun.
This is mostly told from Sadies side who is the main character in this tale.
The last three books I have read from Britney King has been powerfully written and showed me what a powerful talented writer she is. This one is also powerful and compulsive reading but I didn’t like it as much as her others but that’s because of my personal preference in reading and not in the story itself. I enjoyed this suspense immensely.
The title of this book is so very apt! Sadie was a very powerful character. There are people in here that are very unlikeable.
Such compulsive reading. I stayed up until the early hours to finish this. Very worth me being tired today.
Compulsive, addicting, and dark! Just the way I love my thrillers.
Let me tell you friends... this is NOT your typical thriller. This was crazy, dark... I mean DARK, sexy, and disturbingly good.
I have read one other book by Britney King and loved it. But, this was something you definitely want to get your hands on. You will want to DEVOUR this train wreck in a matter of hours.
There are a few triggers in this book and I don't recommend reading this if you can't handle disturbing and dark.
So, you ask what is this about? Sadie our main character is jealous of her neighbor Ann who seems to have the perfect life while Sadie's is falling apart. Sadie decides to befriend Ann. Although, Ann isn't all that she appears.... and seems to be some what of a killer?
The story alternates between Sadie and "her".... which you don't quite understand who "her" is until the end. My god... creative on King's part for sure!
I think that Her is my favorite author by Britney so far! She has become a must read for me!
Can't wait to see what she comes out with next.
4 stars!!
Thank you so much to Britney King for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
What it's about: Sadie is jealous of her neighbor Ann who seems to have it all while Sadie's life is falling apart around her. She decides that the best way to treat her jealousy is by befriending Ann. But there is more to Ann than meets the eye, plus she seems like she might be a... serial killer? As their relationship deepens, Sadie begins to wonder just how far she will go to get the things she wants, and what the cost will be.
I will not lie to you, HER is very DARK, and very DISTURBING, plus there is an addition of a couple lesbian scenes that may not be for everyone. Luckily for the readers, Britney King has a wonderful way of writing where things aren't too descriptive but you still know what is going on. Key words being: too descriptive. This isn't a romance novel after all, it is a thriller, and psychological thriller it sure is!
The viewpoints switch mostly between Sadie and "her" although you don't know for sure who exactly 'her' is until later on. I had a couple guesses and while I was right about something, I was wrong on another. I love what King did with the 'her' part of the novel and it kinda throws you for a loop.
Once again, HER is one of those addictive, can't put down, watch the train wreck, devour in a day type of books. It's pretty short at just under 300 pages and I was able to read it in a little over 3.5 hours. The pages go quick, and I honestly have come to expect nothing less from the lovely Britney King. This is also a standalone novel! While it does mention New Hope and Instalook a bit, the story is all it's own and not specifically related to the New Hope novels.
Final Thought: If you are unable to handle triggers or dark thrillers, I wouldn't recommend reading HER. But if you love dark, disturbing novels that will shake you to the core you should DEFINITELY read this. The plot and characters are well developed, and HER is my favorite book by this author yet!
Thank you so much to the author, Britney King, for providing me with an advance review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I love being a part of your review team and I know I will love everything you write! All opinions are my own.
I wish someone had told me: worry is a waste of time. The real troubles of your life will be things that never even bothered to cross your mind.
Ann says a lot of things. She believes in survival of the fittest, and she wants everyone else to believe in it too. But there are too many stupid people in this world for me to embrace that notion wholeheartedly.
I only wish someone had told me that making friends as an adult isn’t any easier than it is as a kid. It’s worse. You have all of those hardened beliefs and insecurities to contend with. And those at the top? They like to stay there.
Her emotions have hairpin turns.
My Review:
A plethora of adjectives and adverbs came to mind as I raced through Britney King’s HER, but I have yet to find adequate words to encapsulate my thoughts. I am stunned and may be in shock as I’ve never read anything like this. HER was deviously clever, brilliantly crafted, disturbing, surreal, unsettling, and simply riveting to say the least. It was frighteningly brilliant and kept me on edge, off balance, and highly intrigued throughout. I could never get my footing with these intense and alluring sociopaths; I was smirking at their cleverly snarky observations and inner musings one minute and reeling from their heinously twisted plotting and rationalizations in the next. The ingeniously penned storylines were completely unpredictable and enthrallingly contrived, obviously dark magic had to have been invoked. At 85% in, my stomach and jaw both dropped and I couldn’t seem to get enough oxygen into my lungs. Britney King is a wickedly talented wordsmith and a cunning mastermind, and while I greatly admire her mad skills, I would definitely think twice about living in her neighborhood.
Every time I see that Britney King has a new book coming out I get SO excited because I know I am in for a cracking good read. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one, and it did not disappoint. Miz King's storytelling ability has a way of luring a reader in and holding them captive page after page. It was well written and well paced. The plot was engaging. Seductive. Twisted. Gritty. The characters were intriguing. Unlikable. Corrupt. Complex, and the ending was shocking and unexpected. I loved every minute.
Sadie meets "her". the woman who lives down the street and is in awe. Ann is an author of some self help books, has social media accounts. But more than that she is the kind of woman that everyone loves ..and hates.
Sadie decides that she wants Ann's life ... her perfect children, her perfect husband, the one who gives perfect dinner parties, the one everyone wants for a best friend.
It seems like it's Sadie's good fortune ... Ann has indicated that she and Sadie would be good friends.
But what Ann doesn't tell Sadie is that there is a consequence for being her friend. Sadie will have to decide how much she can live with in order to remain friends.
Told almost entirely by Sadie, there are many twists and turns that keep the reader glued to each and every page. I wouldn't call it highly suspenseful, but there's enough tension in wanting to know what is going to happen next.
The characters, especially Ann, were not what I expected and the ending was quite a surprise.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Britney King is one of my favorite authors and I'm so glad that Chandra from @wherethereadergrows introduced me to her writing. After wrapping up three novels in her New Hope series, King is back with vengeance with HER. Sadie Hightower's life is in shambles—her husband has left her and she's at a crossroads with her life. Her drinking has increased, and her drive to continue with her life has been decimated. Sadie needs to reassess what she's doing with her life, but does she even care? When Sadie is introduced to her new neighbor, who's a famous inspirational author, she is apprehensive. Ann is living her best life—she's in a successful marriage, with a lucrative career to boot. After the two meet at the supermarket, a friendship is forged. As their friendship develops, Sadie starts learning the secrets of Ann's life, and she quickly discovers that even the most "normal" people can be hiding the darkest secrets.
I loved King's last three books (The Social Affair, The Replacement Wife, and Speak of the Devil), so I went into reading HER with very high expectations. At first, I felt that the narrative was too similar to the last three books, but once character introductions were made, we were finally breaking the mold of her previous works. The build up with HER is very different than what I expected, because it takes awhile before you actually realized that you're stuck in the narrative's trap—you're hooked, but you don't know it! The last 35% percent of HER is definitely some of the best wrap-ups I've ever come across in a psychological thriller, and I was glued to what was happening before my eyes. It's a shorter novel, so you can definitely read HER in one sitting if you choose to do so. I'm very much excited to see what's next up Britney King's sleeve.
I don't understand the point of this story. I don't understand any of the characters or their motivations. Everything Anne, Sadie and Paul did was total nonsense. King had kind of a crazy idea, but she didn't execute it. I think this is my first and last read from her.
Thank you so much to the lovely @britneyking_ for my review copy of HER -
I devoured this exhilarating, deeply dark and disturbing tale. It's everything you want in a psychological thriller: compulsive, gripping, intelligently written, and a perfectly paced crazy-pants kind of a ride!
Everyone wants to be Ann. She's a successful psychotherapist and author of self-help books. She's happily married to a doctor and of course, she's gorgeous and perfect in every way. At least it appears that way from the outside looking in. On the other hand, Sadie is a bit of a recluse since her husband left her. She's unemployed, has let herself go, rarely leaves the house, and spies on her neighbors, including Ann. From the outside looking in Sadie appears to be a sad, pathetic mess. Both of these woman are polar opposites, but are they?
What I love about King's books is her ability to write the most intriguing, complex, and sociopathic characters I have ever read. Her characters are always well developed and brilliantly written and these characters are no different. The narrative switches between Sadie and an unnamed narrator, “Her", but we aren't exactly sure who she is until the intentional reveal. Sadie is such a fantastically fun character to read - some of her dialogue made me snicker aloud. The complementary sections from "Her" perspective are so clever and brilliant.
HER is an addictive page-turner, filled with desire, tension, jealousy, twists and turns galore. I can't recommend all of King's books enough, but because of the ending, this one is my favorite.
I'm still torn on the rating for this one - it was a four most of the way through, but unravelled quite a bit through the end.
It's quite an unusual experience, reading Her. A lot of these books start off normally before the unreliable narrator and the mind games kick in. But this is a much shorter book, and it's those normal portions of the story that didn't make it in. Instead, Sadie drops us right into the mind games from the start, as we learn just what it is that makes Her so irresistible.
It's twisty mind games the whole way through, and short enough that that doesn't get too over the top. But the ending does push just that bit too far for me, and the suspension of disbelief was getting awfully heavy by the time we wrapped up. Still, worth reading if you have some spare time for a little something twisted.
Release Date: February 28, 2019 Genre: Psychological Thriller Actual Rating: 4 stars
Woah! This book is darker than I expected, but I really enjoyed it! Britney King is a great writer. Hands down. Whatever she writes I will read it. I fell in love with her novels when I read The Social Affair about a year and a half ago and I haven't been able to STOP devouring them since. She has a knack for bringing out the worst in her characters and showing her readers all their dirty, ugly, faults. Not many authors can successfully do this while maintaining readers attention but she can. Not only that, she can write dark thrillers better than many. I don't think I have read anything quite like hers with any other story. She's got an original batch of books and she gives her readers a good mindfuck while they are reading. I honestly love this. If you are looking for a twisted read with an even twistier climax, I recommend HER. If you are easily uncomfortable with murder and things like that (I mean I think most people are, but this is fiction) then I wouldn't recommend it to you. I wasn't expecting the ending- it made my stomach churn a little bit- but I like how the author ended it with a huge BANG. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!
I won't say anything about the plot because it would ruin the story for readers but it will mess with your mind - especially when you get closer to the end. But I will say that this is a dark psychological thriller with narrators who you won't love, but will appreciate for their originality and flaws. If you have read the New Hope series (The Social Affair, The Replacement Wife, and Speak of the Devil) you will find this is similar in story line. I'm pretty such it's also mentioned quite a few times in this one.
I think this is my fifth Britney King book and I have devoured and enjoyed EVERY.SINGLE.ONE! King has a way of just making that crazy show right up and you're afraid to look away because maybe... just maybe... you'll catch that insanity bug, become one of the characters and then... she just might have to kill you.
I'll be honest and say this isn't my absolute favorite of hers - I felt some parts were a bit disjointed and I couldn't figure out if HER and Sadie were the same person, at times they had the same voice. And who the hell is THEY?! They said.. They think.. They say.... They seem to know A LOT. And Ann says... at first I was like OK OK, I get it and then I realize I actually have known people who almost live and die by some influencer or self help guru and this is REAL TALK. Also, when I got towards the last parts of the book, I understood where these voices came from. You think you know but you don't know. *wink*
As usual with her books, I could NOT put this one down. Easily a binge read. Easily two completely sociopathic women with their own agendas (oh and love the Instalook and New Hope cameos).. there's always that balance - the easily manipulated with the manipulator and they ALWAYS seem to be drawn to each other.
Let's discuss a couple of the twists. Actually, let's not so we don't spoil anything for other readers, but I did NOT see it heading in a couple different directions and the last half of this book had me doing that little smarmy smile I get when I'm pleasantly surprised.
This book moves fast and because of that I feel like I either missed some things as scenes flashed quickly from one to the other or I wish some things had been a bit more fleshed out. Either way, I was absolutely entertained, read this in a day and will continue to highly recommend all of Britney's work.
I dunno...I started this with great expectations after reading some of the reviews here...but...sigh...maybe I’m having an off day (or 5!...it took me that long to read a relatively short book as it just didn’t engage me as I was hoping it would.)
We have our typical unreliable protagonist (Sadie)...so already you are weary about everything we see or hear...and it doesn’t hide the fact that “her” (Ann) was not as she seemed as well...so it wasn’t really shocking per se about what both mcs got up to and I thought right in the end telling us how messed up Sadie’s marriage really was
I was lucky enough to chat briefly with Britney King regarding the release of Her: A Psychological Thriller and she shared the she was nervous about this one. Well Britney, I am here to tell you that there is NO reason to be nervous! HER is dark, twisted, and addictive. It exceeded my expectations and in good ole King fashion, it pushes the limits. I did not want to put it down!
As King tells readers, if you are not a fan of gritty and disturbing then this book may not be for you. There are triggers so this is something to consider.
The story is told between two POV’s – Sadie and “Her.” I tried guessing who “her” was but ended up being wrong and quite frankly, I am happy that I was because I ended up being shocked which was fun. Sadie seems a bit on the crazy side and we also have Ann who is extremely manipulative. Quite the duo!
I do not want to say too much because that will give things away but if you think you can handle a psychological thriller that is dark and twisted then go read this book ASAP! You will not be disappointed!
Thank you to Britney King for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review!
BRITNEY’S BAAAACK!! If you’ve been following me for awhile you probably know I’m a big fan of Britney’s. Her books are juicy, scandalous, and easily devoured in one sitting. She continues to push boundaries and I really think she is doing an awesome job of honing her craft. In fact, I think HER is her best one yet!
Friends, HER is not for your Grandma’s. Britney mentions to her readers, please do not pick this up if you aren’t a fan of gritty and disturbing. There are triggers and I don’t mention this lightly as books like this are not intended for everyone. So, I did ya’ll a solid and read this just for you. You’re welcome!
Once again, we have female lead characters that are just freaking perfect. Sadie is coo coo for cocoa puffs and Ann is a master manipulator and sociopath. What a delicious combo! I love the sarcastic tone of the novel. You really aren’t ever sure if Ann is joking or not. Reminds me of what my family thinks of me (lol).
I think fans will be utterly captivated with this story. Congrats on another addicting, devious and thrilling book.
This was not my favorite King book, as it seemed to be a confusing story instead of fitting together nicely at the end. I felt it was too trying at being disturbing, instead of just allowing it to progress there. A decent read, but not the best work of Ms. King’s!
Deep, dark & foreboding in the most twisted sense that sends your brain synapses tingling! This crazy mind-spinning book by King is the epitome of what crazy, jealous desires can do to people and what lengths they will go in their friendships. Even though you got most of the view point from Sadie, you also got some snippets from "Her" which amped up the anti with this! Sadie's life is officially falling apart. Her husbands gone, she's out of work & she's barely making it by - she's let herself irreparably go on top of it all. Along comes Ann, who has just moved to the neighbourhood a few months prior, & runs into Sadie in the supermarket. Being invited to Ann's home for a dinner get together, this will set in motion some irrevocable chaos between the two women. Sadie's jealous, Ann is perfect - wealthy, an influencer, an author - she has it all. She befriends Ann, but she may end up having bought into more than she bargained and hoped for. Ann isn't all what appearance she portrays herself to be. The darkness & at times disturbing kept me interested & highly stuck to the book. Another satiable read by B. King! She knows what she's doing & hasn't failed me yet. Devoured this like dark chocolate cheesecake after a lousy date!
Thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for this DARC. Release Date: May 23, 2022
I just felt like something was missing. I was excited to read it and maybe set my hopes to high and it didn’t live up to it. Although I did read it in about a day it didn’t have me curious and wanting to devour the whole book. Kinda lacking in the excitement category. Sad to say.
I was definitely disappointed in this book as the synopsis was so intriguing but, I felt the storyline was a little chaotic. I honestly would not read another book by this author as I didn’t care for the writing style. The only reason I finished this book was because I was reading it as part a book club with friends, otherwise I would have gave up on it.
What to say about this book... definitely wild af... but I feel like there's a fine line between a fun wild ride and a slip into ridiculousness, and this book just went waaaaaay over that line, unfortunately.
Like I said before, fine line between horror and comedy and this just went so far off into ridiculous territory that it really ruined it for me. A lot of plot holes and things that just didn't make sense. Are they all mentally unwell? What are their motivations? What is the motivation of literally any of the main characters in this book? No clue. Also a lot of random sex scenes and weird diet culture stuff but mostly, the last 30% of the book was just laughably ludicrous. Over the top and not in a fun way. I'd read from this author again maybe, because I liked the guru talk and the commentary on social media and how different it is from real life and how people aren't really living in reality anymore and stuff, but the plot was just... a no from me.
This is my fourth or fifth book by Britney King, so I know what to expect from her books. Psychological, extremely twisted characters with intricate, borderline sociopathic characters are what one is to expect from Britney King. In Her, there are two complex individuals, Her, who is Ann, famous. married to a doctor, therapist and seems to have it all and Sadie, who is down and out, her husband has left her and she has let herself go. This book is told mostly from Sadie's point of view. And in the beginning you think they are very different women but as the book gets closer to the end, you realize that they are very similar. This book definitely had major twists and turns at the end that I never saw coming and I can't tell you what that is because I would be giving away spoilers. This book for me was definitely a page turner, filled with suspense and an ending I never saw coming but it was for me a bit to much. It was well written and quite different than anything I have ever read in this genre so if you are a fan of Britney King, I would suggest reading it but I did enjoy it because of the twists and turns but also found it a little over the top. I gave this book five stars because the end was so different that I could never imagine that ending. For me that is fantastic and if you truly love this type of book and author I highly recommend it. I received this book as an ARC from the author for an honest review and Britney really outdid herself with this one, especially the ending. OMG!!!
Britney King loves to deliver a twisted, psychological thriller that makes it almost impossible to put down. Her is another fantastic addition to my reading list and I can hardly wait for more.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off. Joe Klaus
With an opening like that, I grit my teeth and clench my hands tightly around my ereader, anticipating another fabulous psychological thriller from Britney King…and I was not disappointed.
When I read the Prologue, I thought, “I wonder what she is setting me up for.”
Britney King is very creative when it comes to her villains. Many times she has me rooting for them, making me love them and wanting things to work out for them.
Be careful thinking the grass is greener on the other side. It may be infested with evil.
Sadie…she is finding out that once you are in, you are never out. Now, how can I turn my back on her. I am bopping along, at a steady pace, watching her be manipulated, twisted, and perverted into keeping some nefarious secrets.
Secrets, betrayal…how can she live like that?
Britney King has a way of taking a normal neighborhood and with her casual air creates a location of danger and death. Somehow her imagination comes up with way of surprising me, jerking me out of an I know this attitude.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Her by Britney King.
I finished the book, & I’m still not sure that I know what happened. From the beginning, I thought that i knew where the book was going, but i was WAY OFF. Oops. Towards the end, all the “plot twists” that were happening & jumping between characters, without any real sense of who was who, just left my head spinning.
