Ghost Rememberer

Rate this book
In the summer of 1895, when Brenton Grey rolls into the industrious little town of Carmallow Crown, he knows not the sordid secrets that live there—nor what murderous mysteries fidget restlessly beneath its soil.

Haunted by a comical apparition, shocked by a vicious murder, and confounded by puzzles wrapped up in riddles, the unlikely detective finds himself on a hunt for not one, but three different killers. As he questions his own sanity, and wrestles ageless moral dilemmas, he is taken on an emotional journey that will change him forever.

In a time of horse carriages, pouffy dresses and class separations—at the dawn of electricity, the bowler hat, and the questioning of gender identity—a tale unfolds of forbidden lusts, dark deeds, and buried bones.

Brenton Grey must become a master manipulator, to bring justice, closure and peace, to an entire town—and to a flirty ghost, with a wicked sense of humour.

This was a really fun read! There was a cast of interesting characters, all with their own motives and secrets! Plus a great setting, a house in the little haunted town of Carmallow Crown – perfect for a murder mystery!

I enjoyed following the detective Brenton Grey through the strange circumstances of him being hired, to him unravelling the mysteries of the house and it’s inhabitants (especially the more ghostly ones). I found Mr Grey’s narration engaging, especially his quizzical thoughts on the world around him. Sometimes I did find him to be quite judgemental, but the more he learned, his judgements softened throughout the course of the novel. This sometimes made him quite unlikeable as a character, but I think it worked with who he was as a character. A product of the time his story is set.

I found all the characters to be well fleshed out with intriguing motivations. Though with quite a few, both within and beyond the main house, I found them all a little difficult to keep track of at first. The further I got into the novel, however, the more I got my head around it. As found it easier to follow the mystery.

I found the writing of this novel kept me interested, and curious to know the ending. Plus Buckley can really paint a vivid picture with his words. I could easily conjure what was happening from the descriptions, both of the characters and the story.

Overall this was an enjoyable, and entertaining read. This had some fun characters flung into an intriguing, somewhat spooky mystery that had me guessing until the end!

Thank you, Tyrus Buckley, for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for a fair review!

Ghost Rememberer follows Brenton Grey as he solves a series of tangled mysteries in a small town. While a humorous ghost follows him around, he must catch three killers.

This story has a large cast of characters and secrets. The characters get introduced at a slow pace, which helps readers keep up with them. They are also quite memorable and can stand on their own. The dialogue for all of them was great as well.

Going through this story reminded me a lot of Sherlock and John and also Professor Layton and Luke. Brenton has a lot of Layton’s principles. He also has both Layton’s and Sherlock’s mystery solving skills. The ghost who haunts him—Charlie—is more like John than Luke but can stand on his own.

I enjoyed Brenton questioning his morals throughout the book. From gender identity to how he should righteously catch a murderer. The more he learns about the mysteries, the more he changes too.

My main critique is that a few character names start with the letter C. I’d get them mixed up from time to time, which would pull me out of the story. I also kept forgetting how a couple of them were related to each other. The large family tree is quite messy, so I kind of wanted a non-spoiler family tree to help.

I do want to give a quick content warning that if you can't stomach gore, gruesome deaths, and more, this book may not be for you. It mixes humor with many dreadful elements.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book a lot. I don't read many mysteries, but I'd recommend this one.

This was a such an interesting novel. It includes murder, mystery, secrets, and a plucky main character who refuses to give up.

I greatly enjoyed following Brenton through his investigation of the Carmallow family and town. My main problem with him was his naivety of the “real world” of people, secrets, and gender abnormalities. Despite Brenton’s life goal of becoming a detective, he seemed to be holding himself back throughout much of his investigation, at least until the end.

I did have a small problem with the gender identification portion of the narration. I have no problem with it personally, a person has the right to be who they are; but mainly because I felt like it was thrown in my face a bit more than was necessary. It was well written for the most part, but I felt embarrassed for poor Brenton at times due the somewhat blatant writing and descriptions of the different gender identities some characters were known as.

The characters overall were very well written and seemed to develop realistically as the tale progressed. The novel included many twists and turns that I didn’t except (and a few I saw coming), which made me that much more interested in reading.

I greatly enjoyed this debut murder mystery novel and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I received this novel for free and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
