Marcus Varro is a new centurion in command of the Tenth Hastati. After a harrowing escape from a rioting city, Varro reveals a gathering threat to the Roman army. While he would join the battle against Rome's enemies, his commander assigns another task of great importance.
Despite his years, Varro is given command of a vital escort mission. A massive war indemnity paid in silver must be claimed and delivered across country. Along with Falco and Curio, he sets off on the mission with few soldiers to spare. But Varro finds not all the men under his command appreciate his youth.
Nor is Varro or anyone else aware of the catastrophic dangers awaiting their small marching column. Dangers that will change their lives and threaten to smash Rome's nascent peace to ruin.
Three friends working as special agents for a Roman Consul, amid treachery and political subterfuge within the Legions. These friends can only rely on each other as they navigate themselves through a minefield of geopolitical tensions affecting both Rome and Macedonia. Finely constructed characters and devilish plots make this series unmissable. The description of bloody battles and the cruel punishments handed down to unfortunate legionaries shows just what a desperate life these ordinary soldiers led. However, they still managed to become the finest warriors of their time and were instrumental in ensuring the glory of the Roman empire. A first class read!
Incredibles situations, unexpected calamities, and not much in the way of normality. You have to expect what you expect when you read books like this.
The rules sometimes are the most transitory parts sacrificed to the storylines. And they can get you to where you never expected.
And heroes can unexpectedly become the softest & weakest people there,. Then, in a most frightening situation or one that enraged, they snap and change. They become almost something outside themselves.
Yes you can be disgusted or wish they were something else, less weepy, more sentimental…but you know characters are really a part of the author. The author writes what they know if they’re smart. So sometimes look at the characters to see how the author is like.
As long as it’s done well with storylines that please, and with much vigor, enjoy the ride…
Well worth reading but a pity about some of the grammar and spelling.
I have read the first five books in quick succession, which tells you how much I enjoyed them. My only gripe is the use of incorrect tenses and spelling of words (US as opposed to English English). Give them a go, they're worth it. Well done Jerry. Now to book 6..........
Great fast adventure with a good mystery tale even if obvious at times. While the least historical, it does reflect the society of the times. Enjoy the quick read!
