Rhev must face it all in a race against time across the length of the Peninsula. His to deliver a package before his soul is taken from him. The road was always going to be bumpy, but Rhev might come away with what he's always the chance to be a hero.
Stout is a whimsical and somewhat satirical take on the fantasy adventure genre. Heartwarming, hilarious, and hair-raising!
A wonderful self contained fantasy story with a good helping of humour and action and characters who feel like people, not just 2D cutouts. I particularly enjoyed one of the sideplots which leads into the ending.
Excellently written, thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend!
A thoroughly enjoyable book! I became really invested in the characters and enjoyed all the different threads in the book.
One of my favorite moments was during the end, where there was a bit of a deus ex machina that normally would have annoyed me a bit, but because of the gods storyline I was really rooting for it to happen. I liked how tongue-in-cheek it was too!
I am eagerly looking forward to the next book coming out!

I had a great start to this month, with a re-read followed by three books that I enjoyed a lot. Then, I had to DNF two books in a row! I struggled a bit reading Stout as well, but overall I had plenty of fun reading it.
When I started reading, I immediately noticed there were no chapters. At first I thought it was due to some technical difficulty faced by a self-published author. As I kept reading, I realized it was perhaps a delibrate choice, given all the Discworld vibes I was noticing. After finishing the novel, I was more confident that the entire novel was some sort of a love letter to Terry Pratchett.
I'd say humor, puns, worldbuilding and characters were all well written. Not just the main characters, but every side character too. Hat tip to the author for this quote by a minor sidekick character:
'Do they make them going forwards and backwards, instead of up and down? I spend lots more time going forwards and backwards,' mused Grunthry.
Especially because I had been thinking how such characters are mostly just cannon fodder to elicit laughs in action scenes before this came up. I don't usually note down quotes to be posted in reviews, but this made me take the effort to stop reading and type the words.
There were plenty of sub-plots in this book that came together at the end. Some of these resulted in character growth, powerful emotional scenes, etc. With so much packed into this novel, I feel that a re-read would be very rewarding too.
I was seriously impressed by this fantastic book – I’d never have guessed it was the author’s debut novel! Perfect for fans of tabletop roleplaying games, it is chock full of original ideas, especially in the world-building department (literally!), from theological bureaucracy to sentient potatoes created by a wizard with a particular full bladder. Alongside the main adventure, there are a few other storylines that are neatly woven in as the novel progresses, leading to a very satisfying conclusion. The author has deftly and skillfully balanced the abundant comedy against well-earned poignant moments, leading to a story that is a great deal of fun without ever being superficial. A great read, I can’t wait to see what the author writes next!
A wonderful journey full of everything that could possibly go wrong and yet turn out right. Great characters and a whimsical world. This partially satire story pokes fun at a few great tropes but doesn't let it get in the way of a good old adventure.
The writing style is light and fun, with the greatest focus being the journey.
This has all the marks of a great author in the making and I am excited to see what Taylor writes next.
A humorous fantasy tale of one dwarfs magical journey of courage and heroism
An incredibly enjoyable book that draws you into an amazing fantasy world of mythical characters, Dwarves Wizards, Elves, Halflings and Demons and so much more! Interweaved with humour magic and intrigue. A must read ! Hard to put down !
Overall, I loved this book. The story is just fun and very funny to boot. A small issue, here and there, along the way, but nothing that stopped me reading it in one day. The characters are all so lovable. The story was compelling. And the world appears much bigger than what we see, so I'm hoping for more out of this universe!
What a journey! Loved this lighthearted adventure fit for dwarves, elves, plungdugglers alike :) and a debut novel at that! Anyone looking for a fun read is in for a treat, in my opinion 👍
Well-written and original. The story and characters are captivating and the style is reminiscent of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I’m very much looking forward to reading more from this author.
A really fun and enjoyable read - I loved the creative world building, the complex and interesting characters, and the action packed storytelling - will there be a sequel?
