Andrew Bourelle is the author of the novels SHOT CLOCK, 48 HOURS TO KILL, and HEAVY METAL. He is coauthor with James Patterson of TEXAS RANGER, TEXAS OUTLAW, and THE TEXAS MURDERS. His short stories have been published widely in literary magazines and fiction anthologies.
If Ethan Lockhart was given the chance to do his life over, he would. In a heartbeat. As a young man trying to prove himself to the world, he took a job at a strip club owned by a shady individual known as “Shark”. Getting involved with Shark and his goons lands Ethan in jail for a short time and to reward Ethan for his silence/loyalty-Shark tells him he’ll look after his sister while he’s behind bars. But she goes missing. And then she’s declared dead. Ethan has a 48-hour furlough to attend his sister’s funeral that he plans to use to find out what happened to his sister. A race against time. One wrong move and Ethan could find himself adding to his prison sentence or killed. Author Andrew Bourelle nailed it. The pace, the intricate plotting, the character development, all of it. I was glued to the pages of this book until its exciting conclusion. This story played out like a movie starring Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg as Ethan Lockhart. A likable guy who has become hardened by prison life. Upon his return home, things go as expected: He has an awkward visit with his mother, a tense run-in with former co-workers at the club, and his initial face-off with Shark doesn’t go well. Bourelle takes his time with these scenes. Nothing about the narrative feels ‘phoned-in’. The dialog is authentic. Each character is fully formed and fleshed out. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Ethan and get helplessly invested in his cause. I am impressed with the intricate details of the plot, as well. It was fun trying to keep track of all the moving parts and formulate running theories as to what happened to Ethan’s sister. As the hours wind down to mere minutes, the pages fly by. I really need this to be a movie! This book is available for pre-order at Crooked Lane Books and the expected release is December 7th, 2021 5 out of 5 stars-you can’t ask for a better crime thriller-murder mystery. Bourelle delivers.
Holy buckets! 48 Hours to Kill by Andrew Bourelle is going to be an adrenaline junkie's absolute dream, and I would love to see this turned into a movie or limited series. The story is told mainly from Ethan's viewpoint although it does cut away to different characters at times which really helps heighten the suspense factor. I loved the formatting of the book being broken up into parts and the way the chapters document how much time is left on Ethan's release. I've described books like this before and I'm doing it again here - this is a very "manly" type of read that I think a lot of guys would love. But if you're a female reader like me who likes action and all the rough and tumble that comes with an action movie, you should like 48 Hours to Kill.
I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by David Bendena and he was the perfect fit for both Ethan and the story. The viewpoints are mostly men, so having a male narrator worked really well and it got especially exciting to listen to him during the heart-pounding scenes of which there are a lot of. This is definitely on the violent side and some of the descriptions are a little graphic, so this won't be a book for the faint of heart. 48 Hours to Kill has a pretty awesome revenge plot aspect since Ethan is trying to figure out what happened to Abby, and he is out to get whoever did something to her. I loved that, but I also loved that Bourelle spoke to the relationship between a brother and sister, and how far one would go to find and protect (beginning of the book) the other. I finished this in one day because I couldn't put it down and highly recommend to action fans!
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Ethan Lockhart, a prisoner who gets a 48 hour furlough to attend to his sisters funeral and also try to find out who killed her. Can he do it in 48 hours?
What a story, impossible to put down! It's fast, action packed and filled with twists and turns. Each chapter counts down the time Ethan has left before he goes back into prison and the story is so smart and well written that each clue slowly unravels page by page. I highly recommend this book and it's definitely going to be one of the best crime thrillers of the year. I can't wait to read more of Andrew Bourelle.

1. Fără alcool;
2. Fără droguri;
3. Fără arme;
4. Niciun delict, de niciun fel, nici măcar o traversare neregulamentară;
5. Nu ai voie să conduci mașina;
Bourelle is one of those author's that should have a plethora of books under his belt! I'm a huge fan since reading "The Texas murders", which he co authored with Patterson.
When an inmate gets 48 hours to attend his sister's funeral, he uses it to get to the bottom of how she died. With the help of his sister's childhood friend, they navigate a world of sex, murders and betrayal; with a race against time to find her killer!
This was by far the easiest five star rating I have ever given. Just, WOW!
48 Hours to Kill, was on my list of most anticipated reads for this year. I was incredibly surprised and delighted to be given the opportunity to read and review this novel prior to its December 7, 2021 release date. Now, I know that seems so far away but I promise you, this book is worth every bit of the wait! Andrew Bourelle, takes us on a wild ride of twists and turns and an ending that will have you clawing at your seat.
Ethan is a prison inmate granted a 48 hour furlough to attend his sisters funeral. The terms surrounding her sudden death just seem to be a bit off, for one, there is no body. There is just enough blood for Abby, to be declared dead.
Ethan is determined to use his 48 hours to dig deep and find out what actually happened to his sister. In order for Ethan to do this, he must face his past. Ethan also comes to terms with that fact that he might have to really become the criminal he swore he did not want to be.
48 hours has elements of surprise, thrill, and even a little romance. I could not say one bad word about this novel and I am excited to add Andrew Bourelle, to my list of auto but authors! You will not want to miss this one!
Did I have issues with this both as a celebration of vigilante justice and as a tapestry filled with holes? Yup. Were there scenes where a person with no working hands was victorious in more than one gunfight (and able to button clothing without a thumb)? Yes, again. Was I unable to stop reading even when I had things I really needed to do? Also yes. Don't look for reality, but boy oh boy was this ever a gripping crime thriller! I would not classify this as literary in any way, but the character development was excellent. Some days it is hard to say what qualifies as a happy ending, but I will take this one. Extra love for the choice not to tie up every single loose end while still bringing the story full circle..
You can be sure I will revisit this author.
(Note to the author: Stop using "man" and "girl" as equivalent. It is insulting, even, perhaps especially, when most of the "girls" are sex workers.)
“If I have to stay in here until I die of old age,” Ethan said, “it was worth it.”
We love a great brother and sister bond in this house.
Ethan Lockhart has been in prison for five years. He was arrested for armed robbery and could get out in two years for good behaviour. Ethan intends to serve his sentence and live a normal and quiet life once he is outside. But things do go as he expected when he is informed that his younger sister Abby has died. He is given forty eight hours outside of prison to go to her funeral; there, he finds out that his sister's body was never discovered, and that she actually was declared dead by their mother. He teams with Abby's best friend Whitney to find out exactly what happened.
I think that the type of loyalty that Ethan has towards his sister is absolutely unique. He is absolutely devoted to her and wants her to do well. Through flashback we learn more about Abby, her reaction to Ethan's arrest and the days leading to her death.
This book is action pack, it doesn't shy away from violence. We see other people's POV and that helps not only to see the story from a better perspective, but also see how Ethan is like a person. He doesn't seem like a bad guy, just some guy that made some terrible choices and once he wanted something different for his life, it was too late.
There were aspects of the book that were a bit predictable
I really enjoyed this fast paced mystery/thriller. On furlough from prison to attend his sister’s funeral, Ethan Lockhart has only 48 hours to find whatever answers he can.
I loved the anti-hero protagonist, which meant a lot of not legal ways of tracking down who is responsible for Abby’s death. There are very few truly “good guys” in this story which gave it depth and kept me truly on my toes trying to guess what would happen next.
While I normally don’t enjoy flashbacks - Bourelle made “past” chapters from Abby’s perspective and the “current” ones from Ethan, Whitney, Shark, etc. I loved the way that this was executed and it kept the pacing steady and the mystery intriguing.
I didn’t guess the “whodunnit” until the moment the main characters did and even this opened up a new exciting apprehension sequence. I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed the pacing.
Narration: David Bendena was new to me and he was absolutely the perfect fit for Bourelle’s writing and characters. It was a truly enjoyable performance. I never wanted to push pause.
It was interesting in the first few parts, then became unbearable. The main character is a Gary Stu, the other characters are one dimensional. The sister with the whole constant "big brother", makes me wish she would just turn into an anime character and say "oni-chaaaaaa~aaan".
Actually, this should've just turned into one of those anime, with how the main character and unbelievable the rest is.
This was an amazing, fast paced, intense, action packed thriller! I am surprised I hadn't heard of it before a friend recommended it! Right up there with Razorblade Tears for me. So good!
Fast paced and violent. Maybe a little unbelievable at times (or quite a few times, LOL), but still a perfect story to pull me out of my reading rut (hopefully)! Four stars.

Wow! What a freaking page turner! You have no idea how much action, suspense, grit, and mystery can fit into a mere forty weight hours until you release a reformed criminal on furlough for his sister's funeral. He makes acquaintances with old friends and foes alike still working in the gritty, brutal world of drugs, thugs, and strippers. He falls hard for a childhood friend of his sister's and their chemistry practically explodes off the pages. And when it becomes clear that his sister's body was never found--opening up the possibility that she may still be alive--things ramp up to two hundred.
I'm not usually a fun of action thrillers, but this was quite a masterpiece if an action thriller can be labeled as such. I enjoyed the clever mystery, hidden clues awaiting readers smart and observant enough to see them. And the ending? Brilliant!
I would bet money this novel makes it to the big screen shortly after its release.
While this book was fast paced, I thought it could’ve used a more thorough edit. Also, a lot of the events seemed highly improbable. In spite of these issues, I found it to be an entertaining read.
48 Hours to Kill is about what a brother would do for his sister, convicted felon or not. When Abby was supposedly murdered, a giant pool of blood left behind in her apartment damning evidence of that, Ethan sets out during his 48-hour furlough to discover just what happened to her, even if it means crossing paths with the people he went to prison to protect.
Never did I think that I would be as sucked into this book as I was. 48 Hours to Kill left me entirely on edge throughout the whole book. There are moments of reprieve, but they're few and far in between, with tensions mounting as the plot progresses. Almost every single scene in the book contributed to the mysteries surrounding Abby's alleged death, and if even possible, set the stakes higher than the last, and each scene painting a bleaker picture for Ethan than the one before it. And yet, with each step forward, there's despair, but there's also hope. Needless to say, it's a wild ride.
It's easy to see the lengths that Ethan would go through for Abby, and how he deals with his inner demons during these 48 hours. I felt like some of the plot points were a little too touch-and-go, in the sense that the author has delved into them a little too much to be insignificant, but at the same time, he pulled back before he could get into the details (e.g. ). But it didn't affect the story too much, though it feels like there are a couple of loose ends hanging.
I'm glad I came on this amazing journey with Ethan, Abby, and Whitney, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes exciting thrillers and great action.
There's nothing Ethan Lockhart wouldn't do for his younger sister, Abby, so when he's given a 48-hour furlough from his 10-year prison sentence to attend her funeral, he's determined to use the most of his time to find out who murdered her. If he has to break a few bones and smash a few heads in while he's at it, well, that's just the price those who were involved have to pay. A fast-paced ride, this novel is filled to the brim with graphic violence. If that's not your scene, this is a novel I would stay away from. Aside from that, I did enjoy the novel, though I eye-rolled through a few scenes of Ethan and Whitney, Abby's best friend. She served as the love interest and in my opinion, didn't add anything to the plot.
An action packed book. Ethan Lockhart has 48h to find out who killed his beloved sister. Every chapter has a countdown clock (26h remaining), something that reminds me of tv series 24.
4.5 stars. 48 Hours to Kill by Andrew Bourelle is a high-octane crime thriller.
Convict Ethan Lockhart is surprised he has been granted 48 hours of unsupervised furlough to attend his younger sister Abby’s funeral. He has a list of conditions that he blithely assures his caseworker Daryl Maxwell that he won’t break. But once Ethan decides to try to find out who murdered Abby, he will do whatever it takes to find her and her killer.
Ethan is serving time for crime he committed while working for Stanley “Shark” D’Antonio. He refused to turn on Shark and in return, his former boss agreed to take care of Abby financially. To his dismay, Abby and her best friend, Whitney Potter, give up college to work in Shark’s strip club. Ethan is convinced Shark is responsible for his sister’s death, but Shark denies any involvement. Ethan gets in touch with Calvin Taylor, the detective who worked Abby’s murder before her case was turned over to the FBI. But Special Agent Brian Hughes is nowhere close to making an arrest.
Ethan crosses paths with Whitney who helps him as he tries to figure out who murdered Abby. He uncovers troubling information at his sister’s apartment but he is uncertain if what he learns has anything to do with her murder. But, overcome with guilt for putting his sister into harm’s way, Ethan continues to believe Shark knows more than he is saying. Neither his former boss nor his muscle is no match for Ethan as he tries to find Abby's killer.
48 Hours to Kill is a crime thriller that moves at a blistering pace. Ethan has plenty of regrets but he accepts responsibility for his choices. His determination to find out what happened to Abby is a little foolhardy yet admirable. The storyline is well-executed and the short chapters keep the tension at a fever pitch as Ethan’s 48 hours steadily counts down. With a truly shocking plot twist, Andrew Bourelle brings this pulse-pounding crime thriller to an violent, unpredictable conclusion.
A definite 5 star rating. This book is so full of action and scenes that can be somewhat graphic but you will not want to put the book down. Once I got past page 100 I kept reading—until I was done. Not may books do that to me
Ethan may have been a criminal and put in jail for his crimes. But he was very close to his sister. So when he found out she was murdered and was given 48 hours in the world to go to the funeral, Ethan also had other plans
Torn between wanting to change from who he was but also wanting answers on what happen to his sister Ethan goes on a journey that may destroy in searching for answers. As each chapter countdowns his “get out of jail free” time Ethan will seek out answers.
What a ride that was. I love stories with short time frames. I love stories that develop characters so well. I love stories that have more twist, turns, and hills than a rollercoaster. And while the ending didn’t tie up every last detail is was as satisfying as the rollercoaster ride.
Definitely a book to add to my “Do not miss this book” shelf. I missed it for years. Now I will find more by this author. You should too….
It was Friday and I needed something to listen to while I worked. This was available on hoopla and MAN am I glad I downloaded it. What a fast ride as we follow Ethan Lockhart's 48 hour furlow from prison.
24 was one of my favorite shows at one point. This book SO reminded me of that. As the book went on, the countdown at the beginning of every chapter had me on the edge of my seat....like OH GOODNESS there is NOT enough time left.
Do you need to suspend belief in some instances? Sure...but it's a good, nitty gritty suspense novel. There are some passages that get very graphic and I'm as squeamish as they come, but I wasn't bothered.
It was my first read from this author. I will DEFINITELY read his work again.
