She can’t escape the past …

Mellie Rivers’s job as a nurse allows her to help those the dystopian government has deemed unworthy of medical care. The threats she’s been receiving are a small price to pay. Besides, she has the help of her new neighbor—German missionary and powerlifter Friedrich Wolf.

Friedrich didn’t expect to be drawn into protecting Mellie, but now he’s getting all too close to her—and to the danger threatening her life.

Wow! What can I even say? I never thought I was much of a dystopian reader, but there is so much in this genre that makes a great story. And this one ... well, this took a different twist on a dystopian story. And added to amazing, memorable characters? Just epic.

Characters: So let me just start this out by saying Mellie is such a great MC. Her narration is hilarious. I'd be willing to read day in the life of Mellie just because her personality is that engaging. Needless to say, she offered a good dose of humor that really lightened up even the tense moments of the book (in a good way.) I loved her care and commitment for her patients (oh, and I didn't even mention that she's a naturopathic nurse - too cool!), and her protectiveness over her family was so sweet. And then Friedrich ... the poor man. He went through so much in this book (mentally and physically), but I just loved watching him seek to serve the Lord and try to do what was right. That moment at the end that I won't detail for spoilers was so powerful when he was faithful even in the face of his enemies. I can't wait to see watch Mellie and Friedrich's tentative relationship grow. And then the side characters. I loved Jess. She was so much fun, and she seemed so realistic. The perfect sister for Mellie! And then there was Karl. The guy doesn't even deserve for me to mention him. What a jerk. I refuse to say anything more about him, other than Mellie's comments about him cracked me up.

Setting/Writing Style/Plot: Though this book was dystopian, it didn't have the super hardcore dystopian feel that some books do. (As in the entire world wasn't imploding on the characters - just somewhat.) But I did appreciate the possible parallels the author allowed the readers to draw to our own world. And I loved the Eastern Kentucky setting. As for the writing style, it worked great. Simple, to the point, easy to read. And that plot - yikes! Needless to say, there was plenty of suspense in here that made you keep reading, and the twists and turns definitely could give some surprises to the reader!

Moral/Theme: This was so beautiful. The story of Paul and Silas praising the Lord while they were imprisoned (Acts 16) is such a powerful story, and that's what this book touched on. Christians should praise the Lord, even in the midnight, because of His faithfulness. And that scene with "The Solid Rock" at the end ... beautiful! Other wonderful themes were also presented throughout the book, such as trusting the Lord and the importance of missions.

Overall, this was such a great first book in the Kentucky Midnight series. Those of you looking for powerful, clean Christian suspense should check this series out. You won't regret it!

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Awesome story along with great characters. A Dystopian story that is a bit different than the usual. Just drew me in to wanting more. Received an ARC and reviewing because I absolutely love this story.

3.5 stars & 4/10 hearts. I’m not into dystopians, but I am into Kristina Hall’s writing, so I decided to give this a shot!

The setting was in about ten years, so it felt very modern. But the whole back-in-the-woods aspect helped keep it from being jarring, since very little of the “real”/outside world was shown. The book’s aesthetic was dark—forest, leather, iron—but the writing style kept things from being very gloomy. The sass was on point and I highly enjoyed it.

Speaking of sass, the main characters were enjoyable. I hated Karl—he’s one of the cheapest, most hateful villains ever because he’s so perfect and everything works out for him but he’s so EVIL. Blake was despicable but Robert even more so. But Jess was super fun—the silly, flirty younger sister without being cliché. And I liked Melly—she was a much stronger and more unique female MC than usual. On the other hand, Friedrich bugged me a little because of how weak he was, but that is a personal issue—I’m a weak person myself and I need strong people. ;P

The plot definitely kept me guessing. I can’t say much, but I was surprised at the sudden twist. I enjoyed the suspense without worrying if the characters would be okay (thanks to book 2, hehehe). It took me a while to understand everything about the cards and cancer and all that but eventually it all made sense and I appreciated how well done it was. I still wasn’t a fan of all the “corrupt government and big pharma and police” trope, but it wasn’t overdone. The sibling rivalry was unexpected but super interesting. And the romance was slowburn but cute and awkward and unusual with the widower aspect thrown in, which I liked. Also, I loved the subtle pro-life aspect of the story—right down to “God so loved the world” (IYKYK)!

What bugged me most was that although the characters were saved, and Friedrich was an actual missionary, they never actually ministered to anyone except Blake and Karl—and that in rather forced ways? I expected a little more Christian attitude, a little more peace, a little more Gospel-spreading. However, I understand the characters were in the midst of severe trials. I appreciated the message of finding peace even in the darkness, which will surely come, yet which cannot do anything to us. And I look forwards to seeing the characters’ developments in Darkness Draws Near.

Content: violence.

A Favourite Quote: “Believe what you want. But know I control your fate.”
“God’s sovereign. Not you.”
“You want to bring God into this?”
“God’s omnipresent. You don’t bring Him into anything. He’s already here.”

A Favourite Humorous Quote: “I hope you’re not this sullen with all your patients.”
I shifted on the chair pulled way too close to Blake’s bedside, and bruises on top of bruises screamed. “Kidnapping and a plane wreck will do that to you.”
...“The crash was an unfortunate turn of events.” Oh, now Blake was studying me, eyes slightly narrowed. “But you’re looking marginally better.”
What was I supposed to do? Thank him for the compliment?

First, I want to say suspense is not the genre I typically read. Second, I want to say...well, I don't really know. Because wow doesn't really suffice. It's not a strong enough word to describe this book.

As aforementioned, suspense isn't the genre I usually prefer. That being said, I've been intrigued by Midnight Will Come since I first heard of it, and when the opportunity to ARC read it presented itself, I snatched it up. I am glad I did. this is an amazing book. So much faith, action, familial ties, protectiveness, a dash of wry humor, and more. Yet it is chilling, as it illustrates the culture America could quickly head in if we aren't vigilant.

The cast of characters was great. Mellie (I love her name) and Friedrich were lovable main characters. Jess was a fun secondary character. As an older sister, I get how annoying little sisters can be and I completely understand how protective we are of our younger siblings.

And the antagonists. Don't get me started on the antagonists. Such odious scoundrels. Vile scumbags. Nasty villains. Admittedly, I don't have as much training as Friedrich, but I do have some, and I'd like to use that some to give the antagonists a taste, or more, or their own medicine.

The plot was captivating and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The setting was well-described. Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson are great friends, and I heartily approve of Mellie being so adept at arming and protecting herself.

What I loved most about this book was the faith. It was so good. I always applaud authors who are unashamed and unafraid of including the Gospel in their books, and Hall does so masterfully. The main characters endure so many trials, trials through which their humanity shows, but through it all they have faith. They may struggle, they may stumble, but they desperately cling to the One who holds them in His hand. So beautifully done. On a related side-note, the way the title was incorporated was brilliant and a little tear-jerking.

You need to read this book. It is applicable to current times and illustrates how we are never alone despite the hardships we face. It impressed me, and I'm not keen on most suspense books. If you like Christian suspense with a dash of dystopian and action, you will love Midnight Will Come.

I received an eARC of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Much deeper than I was expecting. This book is true Christian fiction. It is not a sappy, feel-good thriller. It has thrills, yes, but they are presented along with themes that aren't cliché or boring. Would definitely recommend!

That was amazing! Wow! Kristina knows how to keep me reading...lol...the suspense is always so perfectly done! Wow! That was great and I can't wait for book 2! Let's never miss the fact that I literally just finished book 1...lol...

Mellie was a great first person character. I liked how relatable she was, even with calling herself weird...haha...I'm definitely weird too, Mellie. Her want to trust and shaky faith as circumstances grew ever dark was so well done! And I loved that she was a naturopathic nurse! Eeek! That was awesome to me! My mom would be naturopathic nurse if it didn't take so long to go to school...so instead she's a certified natural health professional...so I'm always into that sort of things in books!

And Friedrich, um, let's just say he sounds awesome! Has a cool German accent, works out, pretty eyes, is a missionary....yep, I love him! He was such a emotional raw character I honestly can't wait to find out more about him! His character was done in third person which mixed up the narrative and made the story unique.

All the side characters were done well and it was a very interesting book to read...I always enjoy reading a different take on the future events of the world.

Content guide:

Violence: Mellie is a nurse some mentions of blood...I'd say good for 13 and up just to be safe.

Romance: No kissing...just some general attraction between two characters. And a little flirting.

Language: None.

Review to come, but for now, a few thoughts...
THESE POOR CHARACTERS!!
Mellie's sarcasm is great.
Everyone needs a Friedrich.
Nobody needs a Karl.
I didn't see that ending coming. (FULL REVIEW DOWN BELOW.)

Dystopian, romance, and suspense aren’t my usual go-to genres, for varying reasons, but Kristina pulls all three off in a way that I can enjoy them. I’ve commented in previous reviews that Kristina’s books will keep you flipping those pages, and this book was no different.
I fell in love with Mellie right from the first page of chapter 1. No, I’m not exaggerating. Specifically, it was this quote that let me know I’d like her and made me laugh out loud:
“And Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson would be glad to scare off this guy who’d driven me to the mental depths of talking to a message. Their nerves were a lot steadier than mine.”
(Page 9).
And guys, it doesn’t stop there. The snark and sarcasm that make up Mellie is perfect. But beneath that, she’s a woman who’s past she is trying to forget. She’s scarred, (and later, when her past catches up, utterly terrified) and her snark is a way of dealing with that. In that way, she reminds me of Hawkeye from the television series MASH. She is definitely my favorite character.
But that doesn’t mean the second main character, Friedrich, isn’t amazing too. Once again, when he was introduced, I liked him. He is certainly interesting, with his German background and all. Plus, he is so sweet with his concern for Mellie. And he too has a complicated past, which happens to involve his .

Now, as for plot? Yeah it’s intense alright. And honestly, I never guessed where it was going. There’s just enough detail given to make you want even more. Very suspenseful, but not over the top or unrealistic. Like, I legitimately think this *could* happen in a dystopian world like this.
The faith elements are as strongly there as in Kristina’s other works that I’ve read, and the title ties into it, which is always fun to see 😉
Alright, I’ll wrap up this spiel of words by saying that I enjoyed this work of Kristina’s and I think it’s my favorite one of hers yet. I recommend it for ages 15+.
I was given a copy of this book for review, all opinions are my own and are not influenced by this.

I really like Kristina Hall's writing style. It's down to earth, every day talk. Nothing pretentious. And she isn't afraid to have her characters be a bit...complaining or whiny. That's just life sometimes. Don't we all get that way? Goodness knows I do!

This series is going to have a little romance in it. I REALLY like that nothing is being forced or happening too quickly. Again, it's realistic. I also love the relationship that Mellie and Jess have. It's real. They have witty banter, annoyed banter, and true conversations.

I didn't want to put this book down. There was so much happening, and I wanted to know what was next. Kristina's books are among the most realistic dystopians I've read. These are things that could actually happen (at this point, it wouldn't surprise me a bit).

Also, vitamin C treatment? Well done! I'm all about those alternative remedies!

Was not disappointed! The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because I liked one of her other books a bit better. ;) But this was another hard to put down book, packed with suspense, action, and unexpected twists. Kristina's work just keeps getting better. Her faith shines through and really make the book worth reading. True Christian fiction. Convicting, realistic, and beautifully done!

WOW.

*takes just a minute to soak in the whole story...and recover from the plot twists*

Midnight Will Come is such a suspenseful, gripping book, unsettlingly realistic and because of that, much-needed in our fare of Christian fiction these days. Despite the gloom and angst and danger, Kristina Hall delivered a message of hope and endurance that will ring true now more than ever.

Oh, and did I mention the suspense? Yeah. Kristina Hall is the QUEEN of suspense.

Onto the characters! What struck me overall was how relatable they were. Friedrich is an amazing book boyfriend *smirks* but that doesn't mean he's some super-strong hero who always saves the day and knows the right thing to do and say in every situation. Uh-uh. He's so wonderfully realistic. He has regrets, and carries around pain from his past that, well, makes his present pretty rough to live in. But that's where the relatability comes in. I love it. (And he has a slight German accent!! What's not to love?)

And Mellie is even more relatable than Friedrich. *sobs* I just want to give that girl a year-long vacation. The trauma she went through...let's just say, she's got a backbone (as Blake so unhelpfully pointed out). She has determination, tenacity, grit. And her snide remarks are the absolute best. XD But she also gets overwhelmed by stress, and breaks down, and doubts and worries. SHE NEEDS HUGS.

Also, the touch of romance between Mellie and Friedrich has me needing moreeeee!!!!! It's so sweet and subtle and must be continued. 😊

I love how protective Mellie is of her sister Jess. Who is an awesome little sister. She added so much humor and lightheartedness to the story - it really needed her. I loved the entertaining interactions she and Mellie had. Plenty of barbs get thrown at each other, but Jess really cares for Mellie and is a sweet girl. (And I can't wait to see more of her in the following book!)

The villains...were horrible. You just love to hate them. And yet...there were flashes of humanity. (Like you-know-what at the end. That was sooo unexpected and honestly made me tear up!)

Karl is AWFUL. I like how he's not some obviously ugly villain, but his good looks just make him even more horrid and slimy. *glares at him* (And Kristina Hall did amazing at making me feel like I was inhaling his overpowering cologne along with Mellie. *gags* I could practically feel my nose burning!) Though I must say, secretly, I'm so entertained by his and Mellie's dialogue. They have great enemy chemistry, weird as that is to say. (Am I the only one who thinks like that? Enemy chemistry?) Like I said, Mellie's snide comments are epic. :D

But he's just so awful. The complete opposite of dear Friedrich. *is still in shock that they are actually...related*

The writing fit the story well - short sentences kept the pace fast and tension thick, and we were kept immersed in deep POV, which is my favorite way for a story to be told. The danger and harrowing action were interspersed with some much-needed humor usually in the form of character thoughts, humorous plays on words in the midst of serious situations. The subtle levity does wonders. ("Seemed this rest stop lacked rest.") Sometimes the writing got repetitive and choppy, but I must admit I'd prefer that to overly drawn-out passages I'm forced to skim over, so it didn't me from forging ahead in the story.

The fight scenes were AMAZING. There's never any unnecessary stalling in how it's written - they're straight and to-the-point and cut right to the action. 🔥 And speaking of that, the plot twists threw me for a loop! I really didn't predict much that happened!

At the end, the assurance and peace in Christ came washing over the pages. It gave me chills and made me tear up. I'd been getting weary along with the characters by the stress, the danger they were in, and the endless cycle of being trapped, but that one simple hymn "The Solid Rock"...it captured the theme of the story so powerfully. God won't forsaken us, no matter what, and there is always hope in Him. Beautifully done, Kristina Hall.

I can't wait for Darkness Draws Near, the second book in the series! (And considerably worried for what's going to happen to the poor characters... 👀)

“What’re you doing up here?”

He shrugged. “Thought I’d get some blood moving.”

“Pretty sure your blood didn’t stop moving.”

-

I found a grin somewhere in the deep, dark depths of my soul.

-

“It’s okay.” Because it was. Because I had a Savior Who was more precious than anything this world could offer. A Savior Who would never leave me.

Even when midnight came.

-

"It's okay. We're okay."

Oh, somebody needed to redefine that word.

-

If I were in a movie or book, I'd be asking him his motives right now. But that wasn't real life. His motives didn't matter. All that mattered was that he was aiming that gun at me and I couldn't escape.

But God was with us, would never leave us.

Not even at midnight.

****Actual Rating 3.5****

This was really good! Another day-in-the-life-of type of dystopian rather than the overthrow the evil government type, but don’t let that fool you because this author is an absolute MASTER at suspense and keeping you flipping those pages to see what’s going to happen next! And that twist…!!!! 😱😱 I DID NOT see that coming! Quite a shock to how the end half of this book went! And the government’s initials being UFO got a big snicker out of me…what a way to put down your fictional government. 😂

The characters are pretty good though a tiny bit flat, in my opinion (or I’m just super picky about my characters, haha), but hopefully they’ll develop more as the series goes on. I liked Mellie and Jess’s sister relationship, and Friedrich I feel as if I don’t really have a good grasp on him yet, but hopefully he’ll open up more in the next book. And Karl I’ll just shove off a cliff, thank you very much. Ugh, that guy. 😡 The romance has a good start here with potential to develop further, and I’m intrigued by the past event Mellie doesn’t want to remember or talk about. I have theories, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if I’m right…

The only main issue I had was towards the end (and the reason a star was docked), is there was a bit of repetitive phrases, conversations, and how characters would react to said conversations, and I found that kind of annoying as the rest of the book didn’t have this issue. But, as it was only in the last few chapters, I could just skim over it, but it did bug me. Also the conversion of a character felt really out of left field and left me like, “okay, that happened, I guess…???” and just..I don’t know, it felt rather there, if that makes any sense. It didn’t throw me out of the story, but it did feel a bit sudden.

I’m looking forward to the next book, and many thanks to Kristina for allowing me to read her book! If you like Christian suspense books without a ton of content and a dash of dystopian, I would recommend checking this one out!

Mellie knows that her job providing medical care to those who can't get government care, while not illegal, is potentially dangerous - but she isn't willing to turn people away. When threats begin to appear, she fights through the fear to continue, glad for the help of her new neighbour, Friedrich, and the church community. But there's more behind the threats than any of them realised, and as the darkness deepens, both Mellie and Friedrich will be forced to face their pasts and trust God for the future - whatever it might hold.

I always find this author's books hard to put down and thought-provoking, and this was no exception. While we don't tend to face situations where following God could cost us our livelihood or even our lives, that could change - and even small decisions now still need to honour God. At the same time, the threats in this book were less a result of the characters' decision to follow God and more about their history, so it perhaps didn't feel quite as relevant - though their response to choose to rely on God was inspiring. I guess my one negative feeling about this book was that it felt like in the last half Mellie and Friedrich spent most of their time complaining about what was happening to them and wondering what would go wrong next - understandable, but it got a little annoying. Nevertheless, it's a good read and I look forward to seeing what happens next!

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Mellie Rivers is a nurse in a non-government-sanctioned clinic in this dystopian novel of persecution and faith.

The government has required all who wish to receive health care in "official" society to register and carry cards. This is part of the government's crackdown on domestic terrorists, who are identified at the beginning of the book through official releases as violent right-wing Christians. Registering for government issued cards is one primary means by which citizens are tracked and monitored for anti-social activities. However, the government has not required all citizens to register. Rather, they have made life difficult for those that don't (denying access to hospitals, etc.).

Mellie, along with her sister and the doctor for whom she works, offers medical care to those who do not have "cards".

Into this mix, a missionary arrives (Friederick Wolf) and rents a place to live from Mellie. At the same time, Mellie falls prey to a blackmailer who demands a huge sum of money in return for not exposing her to the government for her activities (though they are legal).

Things get worse and worse for both Mellie and Friederick, culminating in a truly life-threatening situation in which all hope appears to be lost. She and Friederick must dig deep into the richness of their faith to find the hope that has been inside them all along.

I loved the character of Mellie. Her part of the novel is told in first-person, from her perspective, and I found her personality enchanting. She projects the best possible combination of country charm, work ethic, self-deprecation (exhibited by almost ubiquitous examples of her nit-picking the words she uses, her appearance, her ability to make good decisions, etc.) and her faith. Her faith is very strong--ultimately unshakeable--but she forgets to use it when times get tough until forced to admit she has no other remedy for her troubles.

I truly enjoyed the interplay between Mellie and her sister Jess, as well. The playful (and sometimes less playful) verbal jousts rang true.

I liked Friederick, but not as much as either Mellie or Jess, not because of his character (he always came through in admirable fashion) but possibly because his story was told through the third-person perspective, which, for me, didn't work as well, given that he, too, gave himself almost
constant critiques about his words and deeds.

There is a nascent romance (we think!) between Friederick and Mellie, but it remains unspoken and undeveloped...so far.

The presentation of faith was very well done. The book, at its core, is about enduring faith when all hope seems lost--when midnight comes--and the book drove this home well, with a combination of conversations, prayers, hymns and scripture. I especially liked the climax of the book, which I won't give away here, but I will say that it underscored the idea that God is in control, and all things are possible with Him, and if we have Him, we already have all we need.

This is the first in a series (four books according to the author). I look forward to reading the second installment!

This was a fast-paced, suspenseful story with plenty of twists that kept me interested from beginning to end. As with all of Kristina's novels, the Gospel message was front and center and played a key part in the overall theme. Though there is some violence as one would suspect in a suspense novel, I would still rate this a clean novel with no swearing and no glorification of the violence.

As an avid romance reader, I want to address the romance separately since this series is labeled a romantic suspense. According to the author's note, this is the first in four planned novels for this series. I will say that, being the first one, the romance aspect is very light. Time is spent in Mellie's and Friedrich's thoughts regarding the developing feelings they have toward one another, but those feelings aren't acted on in this installment of the series at all other than that the bad guys know they have them and use that to their advantage.

If you've read Kristina's "Refuge" series, it looks like this series will come out in a similar format, where we will follow the same characters throughout rather than get new characters within the same universe. Since this is only book one and the rest of the books aren't out yet, I can't comment on how the relationship will continue to develop, but romance readers who are looking for a hfn will not get that here. Because of the way the series is written, you almost have to look at the romance as a whole rather than as individual novels. The rest of the story did, in fact, come to a satisfying hfn ending. We just have to wait a little longer for things to progress with the romantic aspect since they are not together at the end of this first novel, which is atypical for a romance.

Having said all that, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story (even though the romantic in me would have had the two of them together by chapter 4 😂). I do look forward to seeing how they both work through their trauma to eventually end up together (again, making a big assumption here that they end up together, but the author IS calling it *romantic* suspense.)

Overall, I recommend this to those who enjoy Christian dystopian suspense novels with a thread of romance.

This is a religious and political book.

Thoughts:
⛪️ This book makes me think that this is what super conservative republicans think the world would be like if democrats were in charge. That church would no longer be bible based and would be regulated by the government, that they would be denied health care, and that they would be treated like terrorist for not conforming.
⛪️ politics aside: a very good thriller book, unpredictable, fast moving, never dull.

I wanted to enjoy this book so much but I just couldn't bring myself to do so. It was kinda draggy and repetitive. I found myself keep pushing to go through until the last two chapters. However, I liked the idea of UFO (read to find out what it stands for) as the government in this dystopian world Mellie lived in. The suspense and thrilled feelings were still there so I'm going to give 3 stars for this one. Thanks to the author for providing me eARC. This honest review was based on my experience reading this book, which in no way biased me.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat and had me up past midnight to see how it ended. Excited to read the rest of the series!

I give this book a five star! Dystopian-suspense is out of my usual genre range but I loved every bit of it.
I was into the suspense of this novel off the bat. From creep calls to twisted government to haunted pasts coming up to hurt the protagonists to kidnappings. This book is an awesome ride!
The action packed plot aside I found the characters had such good developments and arcs throughout the book. Characters with a good sense of humor with flawed, but beautiful characters- along with a few ugly ones. I found myself truly wanting to give the antagonists a piece of my mind (despite for the fact I wouldn’t stand a chance against one of them) and wrap the protagonists in a big comfy blanket of sympathy and comfort.
The theme: learning to lean on and praise God even though you are in a midnight time in your life. Trusting that even though it seems your life is in its darkest hour God is still there. Always was. Always will be.

4.5 stars cuz this stuff was pretty good. I always somehow find myself just slightly skeptical of dystopian but with enough suspense in there you'll usually win me over. Really enjoyed this one, and the nurse MC didn't hurt. The characters were very believable, felt real and won you over. Kinda scary. Like not in that way just...dystopian worlds are kinda yikes in a yeaaaah I don't want to live in an alternate future kind of way. But I really appreciated the realistic perspective on God being present with them in it. Also...the premise of fighting for those deemed unworthy of care and preserving the dignity and sacredness of life kinda gets me fired up so there's that. Suspense was also spot on. The one thing that keeeept getting me was the acronym of the fictional organization the Unified Federal Organization (UFO). I don't know if it was on puuuuurpose(?) but it continued to confuse me greatly every time the "UFO" was mentioned, maybe I just hear the phrase a lot in casual conversation and am really used to it meaning alien stuff? XD I mean, I knew what it meant in the context, it just kept throwing me off. I mean, I'm pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be sci-fi anyway. XD But all around good book, definitely recommend even if you tend to go more for suspense than dystopian.

It's a point in the not-so-near future, where the government has taken un-Constuntional liberties. Where those without the required card are unable to get medical treatment. When addicts roam, laws aren't enforced, and Mellies run free.
Scratch the last one; Mellie the car snob doesn't run free. She's a hiking nurse at a non-government clinic... which just so happens to be at her house.
Frederick's the stubborn German missionary, the one with another stubborn German (one who most assuredly isn't a missionary) who despises him. Gotta love the brotherly ambiance here.

Shootings, kidnappings, and faith build another suspenseful read from Hall.

Midnight Will Come by Kristina Hall, is book 1 in her Kentucky Midnight series. Again, she has written a tale of adventure, with much suspense and action. But there is a twist. A romance is budding and I quite enjoyed the sweet nuances throughout the story. I can tell this is going to be another good series and I’m looking forward to book 2. 3.5⭐️

This story ended up not *quite* being my cup of tea, though no fault of the author. I hit a massive reading slump just after starting this book, and as a mood reader, I guess I wasn’t totally in the suspense/dystopian mindset. So take all that I say as mere personal preference because I know this is something suspense/dystopian lovers would probably enjoy!

Starting with the suspense/dystopian aspect, this story definitely had the “Big Brother is watching and all government is corrupt” vibes. There are police raids, kidnappings, and several characters get beaten up. And the feelings of fear are definitely real. (It isn’t overly graphic, but if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing, it may be a bit much for you.) There were a few points were I was on the edge of my seat about what would happen next, however, I did feel the climax and ending were a tad rushed.

Character wise, I struggled to relate to the MCs (Mellie and Friedrich), due to both being super stubborn and emotional. However, Mellie’s inner dialogue was fantastic and provided great comic relief!
The villains were creepy and definitely villainous. And I actually really liked Mellie’s sister, Jess!

The faith elements were well done and natural, including the importance of prayer & trusting God; having a church community; and the struggle of loving your enemies.

Like I mentioned, this is mere personal preference, and I look forward to reading more from Kristina in the future!

I liked the idea of the storyline.. but it got too whiny for me. Even the male protagonist was a bit too weak, where the villain seemed super strong. The ending has a great twist.. I’ll definitely read the next book.. so far it’s not available through my local reading apps.. will keep looking for them..

2.5 stars. This was fine. The suspense was gripping but not so much so that I couldn't put it down. The romance felt a little dry to me but maybe that's simply because I'm not a fan of romances where one of the interests has been previously married. Even beside that, though, there just didn't seem to be much of a spark in the romance and it came off as underdeveloped. More than anything else, I enjoyed the faith aspect of the book and how we as readers had a peek into the two main characters' strong faith and constant prayer lives. The book leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger but I still don't think I'll finish the series.

God bless,
Kaya :)
