When she’s forced to face her biggest enemy, SS-Hauptsturmführer Joachim Von Henkell, in a one-to-one battle, her heart is ripped open all over again.
With her tough exterior and survival instinct, Sable ultimately fights her way to the top of Churchill's secret agents’ ladder. Even Vera can be proud of her. But when the war is over, Sable has but one wish. To find the girl she was forced to leave behind.
The Highland Raven is a young woman’s spellbinding story of heartbreak and revenge, in which her fight against the Nazis proves to be both a blessing and a curse.
Hannah Byron is an acclaimed author of historical fiction centered on WWII resistance women. Born in Paris in the mid-1950s to a British mother and a Dutch father, she grew up with strong ties to France, the UK, and Holland, which continue to inspire her work. Most of her novels are set in Western Europe, where history and culture run deep.
After decades of balancing life as a mother, university professor, and translator, Hannah is now a full-time author. She writes passionate novels about resistance and romance set in the 20th century—topics close to her heart. Readers often describe Byron’s work as gripping, deeply emotional, and impossible to put down.
Sable's parents were always a bit distant, especially her mother. Then after the divorce her father moved and she was left with her mother. She hated her mother's Nazi friends. The only person she could count on was her childhood friend Freddie.
Then an incident with her mother's Nazi boyfriend Joachim Von Henkell a member of the Nazi SS changed Sable's life forever. It was a secret that would stay with her for years and she could tell no one until her best friend Freddie coaxed it out of her but he was never to tell another soul.
Her father sends her away to a boarding school in Switzerland when she tries to run away and marry her best friend Freddie. While at the school she is a bully with a group of girls until a ski accident and WWII sends her back to London.
In London she meets an SOE agent Vera Adams and it sets her on another journey far from the party girl Sable was to the agent she became. Sable became a top agent. She met and fell in love with Bill Mitchell another agent but when her secret got in the way of the relationship it ended. She fought a brave battle even saving Freddie's life.
She was captured once trying to free her fellow agents and was forced to face her most feared Nazi Joachim Von Henkell. This did not end so well, but Sable only had one thought in mind escape and to find the object of her secret.
I loved the character of a courageous and powerful woman set in the resistance. I love that she was able to redeem herself and become something special. The characters were all perfect for the story, and the settings were vividly described. The book was exciting, suspenseful, romantic and just an all around good story. The ending of the book was perfect. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Thanks to Hannah Byron for writing another great story and giving me the chance to read and review it.

This is the fifth book in the series, and it is only getting better. This is Sable's story and I was so excited to sit down with this book. The author has a great grasp of the historic era and the characters fit right into the era. We get to see how the girls who met at a finishing school and become such forces in the resistance in World War 2. I love this book series so very much, the author really gave me a love for historical romance stories. So, if you want a great series for the fall check out the Resistance Girls series .
This book was truly a great read, I have enjoyed it immensely. It's a bit different from other books in the series because of the main heroine of the book being bit different, maybe less positive but I like the book more because of that, it adds diversity, drama. This book, just like the others in the series, provides an accurate historical background (WWII, UK & France) but is also an emotional and engaging story which has everything - human drama, patriotism, action and the thrill! Also I appreciate the story having a clear defined ending as well, each book by Hannah Byron can be read on its' own in my opinion as author provides sufficient background to be able to enjoy the story that is being told. But it's also equally great to have read the others before as it helps understand some of the characters and the events in the story better. Also one can appreciate all the research made whilst creating this novel. I recommend this book to any history buff as well as to any mature reader!
From the wilds of Scotland to the mountains of Switzerland to the outbreak of war and loss of all hope. Sable with the help of her only friend enters the world of the S.O.E. In her short life she struggled with despair, a lack of love and no trust in the future, but now with the determination of so many she's ready to fight, to rid the world of Nazi aggression. She became one of the most loved and honoured of the Resistance. She returns home, broken and alone until the dark clouds lift and the sun bring to her the two great loves she never hoped to have. My favourite author has done it again. She made me appreciate life and all its flaws.
The Highland Raven: A Gripping Scottish Family Saga from World War 2 (A Resistance Girl Novel Book 5) by Hannah Byron When I first saw the cover I love the raven on the front cover, treasure! the hat she's wearing shows a beak if you look hard enough and mountain in the background are raven's wing span. Book starts out when Sable was at home with her mother who was going to have a dinner party and she just wanted her father who was raveling for business. She camps out in the library and her friend Freddie shows up the next morning with a breakfast tray and he has some ideas to share with her. Story also goes back in time to when she was with her father in the city, shows up back home later with a man and her father then sends her off to school as she's like her mother, giving her body away to anybody. In a previous book we do meet Sable so we know a bit about her and her life. Love the time she spends at the school with other girls. The bonds and friends she make with common interests. entertaining how the author weaves a story between her life and that of the war. Fun to learn historic events that also take place while she deals with her own tragic upheavals til she gets a call from Freddie and she heads into the action with help from others. Love that she is so hands on. She learns of other ways to help and jumps right in and also meets the captain, which we know there is a connection but not exactly what yet... Love how she handles her properties and lends them to aid the war for her country. Author writes as if you are there with Sable, enlightening, scary and magic at times. She has a duty to her country and leaves to help. Love the travel and events that led up to her training. So much sorrow and pain from her past comes to light, finally as we learn the details of her heartache. Sad times as she's single again and concentrates on war efforts. Full circle and then some magic happens on many counts as the story ends. Love the author's notes and recap of how everyone went on with their lives, when they died, etc. So many surprises in this book! Sneak peek at next book in the series is included at the end along with a note from the author. Can be read as a stand alone book.

THE HIGHLAND RAVEN, only few knew. To herself had, something to prove.
Times were hard, even before war. Then one day, made a decision.
Life of secrets, nothing the same. Full of action, but not shame.
Many would die, that's how dangerous. Choosing to participate, that others survive.
Betrayed by some, who could trust? Hard to perceive, and quickly adjust.
This story travels, that we see. Hope is needed, that we be.
Let not another, dictate who are. Stand up against, cruelty because 'different'.
See sacrifices made, willingness to accept. That be example, how to protect.

The Highland Raven This is book 5 of the Resistance Girl Series and Hannah Byron has outdone herself yet again! This is a must read if you love historical fiction during war time. Lady Sable Montgomery finds herself struggling both mentally and physically at the hands of her mother and the need to survive on alcohol and cigarette’s , when she makes the decision to runaway and marry her childhood best friends and move far away from Alnor Castle . When this option doesn’t work she finds herself at a Swiss finishing school. Restless and unsettled ,not knowing where here future will lead she finds herself , during WW2 at 21 , making the decision to join the Resistance to support the Secret Service under Winston Churchill. Sable finds her calling here, with love ,friendship , heartache, but when her past catch’s up with her she needs to face and find what she has lost!
"She took a moment to recuperate. All love, all tenderness, made her weak, and she hated it. Being hard, almost insensitive, was much easier these days. And much more useful."
While still an incredibly well-researched and well-written book full of beautiful and lifelike imagery like I am used to from Hannah Byron, this was by far my least favorite instalment in the Resistance Girls series so far. Somehow I didn't quite like Sable and found both her personality and her story to be somewhat less believable than others.
I have read most of this series - I will get round to the one I have missed. However it is possible to read these as standalone novels and still follow the storyline. I like the way that the characters from the the previous books and their time at a Finishing School all interlink but not in a forced way. We have met Sable in previous books but this one explains the life she led and the way her mother exploited her for her own ends. The mother comes over as a particularly nasty person. Sable had a secret that she tried desperately to forget but was never going to be able to - this and her elite upbringing led her to some terrible choices and decisions. However the way her life took her into espionage and her training was well described and Sable was allowed to redeem herself, fall in love and ultimately turn her secret round. I enjoyed this book, it was well researched and well written.
OMG this book was so fast paced and yet I was desperate to get to the end of it! Never a time to breathe in this book, I tell you. And I went along with the rollercoaster that the author was driving. And enjoyed it all along.
Sable's life is filled with things one after the other! I like how the author takes us through her entire life, with information revealed when it's relevant. And also, even with it, I cared. I cared about every single turn and event. Wonderful book. I loved reading it.
The narrative was a roller-coaster of a ride from pre-WWII Scotland, where Lady Sable Montgomery is kept restricted in her family manor home, along with her Nazi-loving mother, to a finishing school in Switzerland, to a career with the SOE, behind enemy lines in France. Much adventure, peril, backdrop of Dunkirk all the way to D-day and how she was involved. I confess I did not like her condescending, upper-class character for the first several chapters, but as the book goes on, she evolves into a much more likeable and honorable character. Her lifetime friendship with Freddie is sweet and supports her development. Lovely book set before, during and slightly after WWII.

Highland Raven: A gripping Scottish Family tale of World War II: The Resistance Girls Book 5 is by Hannah Byron. This historical novel is part of the set of the Resistance Girl series about the SOE during World War II. Lady Sable Montgomery was the last person anyone would ever consider being involved with the war effort, much less as a member of SOE. Sable had been rebelling since her father left; but he should want her happy too. However, here she was in Scotland and he was in Europe. She locked herself in his library so she could get to him first. He had to be the first to know the reason she was here. Sable’s mother had tried to get her to marry an older German man; but she refused. He raped her and got her pregnant. Her mother forced her into giving the baby up for adoption. Sable had to get away and when her best friend Freddie suggested they elope and solve both their problems, she agreed and they fled for London. However, he was called out of town again leaving Sable on her own. Again, she got in trouble, but this time, he sent her to a finishing school in Switzerland. Here, through no effort at all, she quickly found herself in trouble again. This time, her father was unable to help as he himself was in the hospital. Once he dies, she is left alone once more. This time, she joins the SOE as a secretary; but quickly becomes to learn that we are never alone and finds friends as she finds herself.
I really wanted to enjoy this book because I’ve enjoyed the others in the series. The young ladies are given a backstory sometimes it’s a very posh lifestyle and sometimes it’s been rough. But they always meet at the finishing school in Switzerland and then they dive into their involvement in the war. But with Sable’s story I was really thrown off by her way of speaking and the awkward conversations she has with people. Maybe I just wasn’t getting the point of the discussion but I found I struggled through those sections. There were events I was rather interested in finding out more about but they were glossed over. And there were other events which were swimming in details and unnecessary imagery. I was given an early copy and wrote this review honestly.
This fifth book in the Resistance Girls series is the story of Lady Sable Montgomery, a young aristocrat who has been treated deplorably by her mother. Existing on a diet of alcohol and cigarettes her life is spiralling out of control.
As with the main characters from the previous books in the series she finds herself packed off to Le Manoir, a Swiss finishing school where she remains until the outbreak of WWII. Returning to England, Sable is determined to do her bit for her country and is recruited as a Special Ops agent.
Although a good read, Sable’s story is my least favourite book of the series so far.
Schotland, 1940.

I'm going to have to go back and re-read some of the previous ones again. It seems to me that this storyline had a different outcome from a previous book. Or one very similar, ie, a girl gets raped by a NAZI, has a baby, and the baby was taken away and adopted. Then while fighting for the resistance she runs across the NAZI who raped her at her Scottish home, he ends up with remorse. And she runs across her/frenemies from the boarding school while at said home. Not two years as The Raven in France etc.
I was so excited about seeing, “ but wait, there’s more…” each time I finished one of there wonderful stories! I didn’t take time to leave a review. And now, I’m equally excited to read the next in the Resistance Girl series! Thank you for these beautifully written, magical stories with such insight into the WWI, and WWII historical time periods. My Father fought in WWII on the battleship USS Nevada. It’s been such a pleasure reading your stories, thank you so much!
I just can't get enough of the resistance girl! Of all of them, Sable's story is the one that touched my heart the most. I do recommend reading the books in order, only because I am a fan of order. However, I started with book six and had no difficulty reading it out of order... Except, I totally had to buy all the books. I completely recommend this book!
These "Resistance Girl" novels are a must for anyone who loves WW2 historical fiction with lots of resistance thrown in, the killing of Nazis an a bit of personal stuff to just make it interesting. You will learn how Sable basically turns from a spoiled, entitled young woman to a fast and furious fighter. Somewhere along the way she finds love but best of all she finds herself.
This was the latest in this Resistance Girls series and I enjoyed it. It is Sable’s story and she ends up working as a spy for the SOE in France. What she endures as she learns about a pivotal secret in her past only makes her stronger.
A tad disappointed in this novel. Sable had issues! I found her arrogant and selfish. As the story progressed and she matures as a different woman but still does not follow the rules, I do not think the SS would be as careless in their behaviour to her.
A very dark dysfunctional heroine who would never have made the cut in the real SOE. This is definitely a work of fiction taking place during the second world war. At times the actions just were just too much for me.
One of the most heart wrenching books I have read. This entire series are some of the best I have read. I am looking forward to book 6. Hannah Bryon is a great author
Sable is a wealthy young woman with an attitude, a chip on her shoulder, and a wide streak of self-entitlement. She is nasty to many and loves only two people - her childhood friend and her father. She despises her mother. When she gets shipped off to a finishing school in Switzerland just before the start of WWII, she behaves poorly and alienates many, but she finds that she does admire qualities in some of the other young ladies.
As she arrives home from the boarding school, she experiences additional trauma in her life, and we begin to know more about her previous difficulties in life.
Sable decides to become part of the British resistance in Europe during the war. Her intelligence and tenacity serve her well. The reader will recognize characters from previous books in this series as they pop into the story from time to time.
Ms Byron sets the scene beautifully with her writing. As with previous books, the descriptions make me see the surroundings clearly in my mind. The book has suspense, grief, and luckily, a happy ending for Sable.
