Two pairs of best friends—one alien, one human Two sets of lovers—one genuine, one pretend...until the moment they touch
Reesi has been in love with her best friend ever since she was a young girl running the streets of Fassalthi. With his dark, broad wings and vivid green scales, Taeth is the perfect example of Lisseethi masculinity. He’s all she’s ever wanted—until he decides to search for love among the humans.
Soon Taeth is making plans to travel to Earth to be with his human lover, but bold, vivacious Angie Rodriguez has a best friend, too. David Alcantara has been holding a torch for his childhood friend for as long as he can remember. When Taeth and Angie push him to pursue Reesi, they both agree to a correspondence to appease their friends. Neither one of them is looking for love, but they’ll pretend. If faking an attraction they don’t feel shows Angie and Taeth what they’re missing, the charade will be worth the effort.
The trouble is that pretending isn’t so easy when friendship starts to feel a lot more like love. The instant they meet in person, attraction flares between them like wildfire, but the chemistry they share swiftly becomes something far deeper. When Reesi’s health and safety are threatened, David will need to decide if keeping a love he never expected is worth the sacrifice of his friends, the life he's built for himself, and the only home he’s ever known.
More like 3.5 stars for me but it was a well written book. The couple actually discusses their problems like adults so there are no miscommunications, that was nice. The reason why I didn’t love this is the surprise pregnancy trope, l would’ve liked some warning since I don’t usually go for books that have it. And they did have unprotected sex the first time without discussing birth control; they make up an excuse that it’s weird for couples of different species to get pregnant, but still I feel they should’ve discussed it before having sex. Steam: 3.4

Have you ever read one of those books that just sort of ruined you for the next several books on your TBR? Like, a book that was so good you just know the next three books you read are going to pale in comparison? Yes, this is that book. It is AMAZING. There’s no crazy drama, no “but I can’t love you, I’m supposed to be in love with someone else” silliness. No, this is cover-to-cover romance, complete with sweet human male, sweet alien female, surprising friendships, and communication! Omg, the main characters communicate in a responsible, trusting fashion! If I could give this book ten stars, I would.
Now, I’m going to go find a new alien romance and wish I could read this one again for the first time…
This romance was lovely! I adored the fact that the hero and heroine met by writing letters back and forth. I loved reading their letters to each other. The world building was vivid, and the plot was quiet but moved along at a good clip. The heroine was a lovely person and deeply sympathetic, and the hero was a deeply honorable, caretaker alpha type. I highly recommend this romance.
This is an astonishingly good book. The couple has a lot of chemistry together, they discuss their problems like adults, and the communication difficulties they have are realistic.
The worldbuilding is fascinating, David and Reesi are likeable and believable, and the story is enjoyable. I laughed out loud several times. There is a definite lack of death, doom, and destruction, which is refreshing, although bad things do happen. Having a human male and Xithilene female was an interesting twist to this story. There is graphic sex and some violence.
I stayed up all night reading it to finish it in one go. The unique story or love from two different world will hold you captive with it's sweetness and just rightful- ness.
I liked it, but I think this book would benefit a lot from sitting in the author's drawer for a year or two. Weird alien aside (feathers, breasts and forked tongue...? She kept reminding me of Mushu (yes, from Mulan) every time she took a sniff at something) what bothered me the most was the writing. It wasn't bad, but it was confusing when the dialogue from character A wasn't followed by their speech tag (which is fine), but by a action from character B (not fine). So you have something like this:
"Do you love me?" "Yes." He hugged her. "Then stay."
Where I need to take a moment to figure out who said what. This isn't an excerpt from the book, btw. Anyway, for me that's almost as bad as having two speakers in the same paragraph.
As for the plot, a couple of things bothered me. The friends didn't feel particularly necessary because there wasn't really any angst between (any of) them. It's like the author couldn't bear to keep them apart, so from the moment they met, that was it. No awkwardness, no doubt (aside from the first day, I guess), no drama, there wasn't even any conflict of cultures. There were some differences, but they were just that. Differences. There wasn't anything to overcome between them. Oh, there was racism. In passing. Come to think of it, the end was rushed.
All in all I still think it's worth a read for the communication alone. That is a rare sight among these bands.
This book was so cute to read. The only reason I opulent give it five stars bc I do not see how they kept the friends they had. It started getting annoying. But again it was part of the story!
Great book, with world building and alien creating. The drama, the angst and the smexy times. Really like the premise and how it played out for the characters.
I think they forgot their lifelong loves too quickly and became a couple. I would have liked it better if they were confused about their own feelings and their love had developed slowly. But, overall, it was a sweet story.
