Shannon Baker writes mysteries about strong women in dangerous situations. Her books are set in the iconic landscapes of the American West, from the Colorado Rockies to the Nebraska prairies, to the deserts of southern Arizona. Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, and too few years living on Colorado’s front range. Her dark suspense, The Desert Behind Me, is a 2019 Winner of the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award. Seconds before quitting writing forever and taking up competitive drinking, Shannon was voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer’s 2014 Writer of the Year and, buoyed with that confidence, continued to write, earning another RMFW Writer of the Year nod in 2017-18. Shannon makes her home in Tucson where she enjoys cocktails by the pool, breathtaking sunsets, a crazy Weimaraner, and killing people (in the pages of her books).
A lover of the outdoors, she can be found backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, river running, hiking, cycling, and scuba diving whenever she gets the chance. Arizona sunsets notwithstanding, Baker is, and always will be, a Nebraska Husker, heartbreaking as the last two decades have been. Go Big Red.

One sentence review: WTF?????????????????????
SYNOPSIS
Sheriff Kate Fox is shocked when her mother shoots a man to death – allegedly in self-defence. When she realizes the math does not math, she starts to dig into her mother's secretive past to find out why someone would want to harm her.
MY OPINION
.............?????????? Ok so I've been in my ✨live laff luv✨ bag but bish I'm back. This was a short one and I was already at 40% when I realized this sh!t stanks, so I just leaned all the way into the hate read.
So why was this book so stanky? Let me count the ways:
Kate is insufferable and daft. The only way she's Sheriff is because it's a Make A Wish type situation or the only other candidate was an iguana. Because no way in hell was this chick competent enough to solve the case of "where'd I leave my slippers?" It's rare I wish a book was a citizens gone rogue vibe, but this was one of them. Kate being an actual officer of the law was simply too unbelievable.
When her father comes and is like "yo, can you plz find out who tried to attack your mom" her response is (literally): "and why is this my problem? He's her husband. He should be the one figuring this out." ?? SORRY WHAT??? I would've accepted "I can't, I'm too close to the case but I'll have the local iguana try to suss it out" but simply saying your DAD who works "on the railway" (whatever tf that means) should be tasked with solving the case is unacceptable lmao.
Okay and now let's move onto the writing. HOLY. SH!T. It was equal parts repetitive and closed caption-y. Just in case you didn't know, it is cold, Kate is glad she brought her jacket because it is cold (she literally mentions this MULTIPLE times), oh and Chicago is sOOoooOOOO different than buttfucknowhereville where Kate resides. Literally there were paragraphs describing the difference between "city" and "country" trees.
Baker was also trying way too hard to be profound and literary. Here's some quotes that made no sense:
"I tromped into the Marriott parking lot feeling like a cold bowl of chili..." Sorry feeling like a WHAT??? What !?!?!?? I can't even begin to think what this means?? You have bubbly guts?? Idk
"Diane followed the well-modulated directions from the GPS genie..." and "The humorless GPS..." Whereas Carolyn Arnold's Last Seen Alive was completely devoid of adjectives, Baker couldn't seem to cram enough into 298 pgs.
"Unlike the others who seemed to be sucked into the doors or spit out, depending on their destination, Baxter exited the building as if the doors rotated at his will." L M A O. Yo I honestly think if Baxter said hey kate eat some dog food out of my booty hole, she would. Also if he's exiting via revolving door... it is rotating at his will???
This book was just SLOW AF. Sooo absolutely nothing happens other than Kate pining over Baxter (the king of revolving doors), trying to make amends with her sister Diane, and thinking about how glad she is that she remembered her jacket. Finally we get to the end and bloop she's called out on a rando domestic and talks a man down from unaliving himself on tractor? This had nothing to do with the case at hand? Literally why was this thrown in with 10% of the book left?
Lastly... everyone here can go eat dirt. Idk if we were supposed to empathize with her mom but sorry you're literally 70 and ruining your entire life and destroying your family over some deflated dick from 50 yrs ago?? Also why was the author romanticizing age gap relationships (she was 12 dating a JUNIOR in high school? excuse me?)??? Diane was a POS as well who treated her sister like garbagio and then was like "ok nvm are we good?" and Kate the doormat just accepted it. What a fked up bunch of nonsense this book was. Literally I was cheering for the dad to choke everyone out at the end and call it a day. Bye.
Exit wounds is the 6th book in the Kate Fox series. Kate and her sister are making and canning salsa while their mom is in her studio. When they hear a shout followed by a shot, Kate rushes downstairs to find an unknown man dead on the floor with her mom holding the pistol that shot him.
In this segment, we learn a lot about Kate's mom's past. For the past 40+ years her mom has been hiding from the past she left behind. And now she hiding and running again to keep her past hidden.
There are developed characters and a solid plotline.
The only thing that would have made this story better is if Kate would have stopped pining for her lastest love interest who dropped her after she believed him to be involved in a murder. I was glad that the author didn't bring them back together as Kate had dumped the person she was currently with to be with her new amour.
This would be a good place to end this series as the good name of Fox will not be looked upon nearly as nicely as it was before the man broke into the family studio trying to kill Kate's mom.
This was so twisty. It took me a little while to really get into it but I'm glad I pushed on because this was really good. A pager turner.
Kate is determined to find answers. What she uncovers are buried secrets about the woman who raised her and threaten their whole family. Intense, full of suspense. A great domestic thriller.
This book is full of intriguing characters and must be part of a series because there is a lot of subtext and backstory which I think I missed, having only read this one. Despite that, I really enjoyed this book and thought the story was clever and certainly fast paced. The author has a wonderful, descriptive style which allows you to engage with the relationships she creates extremely well.
A mother when assaulted, the secrets she withheld came to light. Her daughter wants to solve figuring it was a personal attack A plot with twists, is the unknown worse than not knowing Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
I really wanted to love this book but it just didn't do it for me. It started off really fast paced then it just dragged. Without giving any spoilers I will say that some of the details added could have been left out. Especially Kate crying over Baxter constantly who wasn't really even part of the story. There were a few redeeming moments which is why I'm giving this book 2 stars. Thank you Netgalley and Severn River Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I like this series but this one got on my nerves. Way too much family drama. I like strong women characters but not rude, mean and angry. I’ll try the next one but I’m not sure I’ll make it through.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
This sixth installment in the Kate Fox series, while like the first five books, also took a different course with the focus of the story. The story is built around Kate’s mother shooting an intruder in her studio. For those of us who have read all the books in this series Kate’s mother has been an enigma – she has always been there, even when she wasn’t, or she wasn’t there even when she was. This story goes a long way in answering several questions I have had in the previous books as well as revealing information that may set the stage for stories to come. I’ve enjoyed each of the stories in this series, but this story is on a level all to itself, it’s excellent and brings Kate into a whole new light. This one is a must read for fans of this series. If you’re new to the series and reading this review, you owe it to yourself to read the first five books before this one so that you can fully appreciate this story. I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and chose to provide my review.

There has always been a component in this series that has focused on the Fox family dynamics, but this installment focuses solely on Kate’s mother, Marguerite. She’s shot an intruder in her studio. During the initial investigation, Kate finds a hidden cell phone with only one number in its call log, which causes Kate to wonder what her mother is hiding, why they know so little about her past and how those revelations from her mother’s past will effect their family. This book does pretty well as a standalone, but there are references to past events that may be confusing to new readers and to really get a feel for the character dynamics, it would be best to start at the beginning of the series. Sometimes this series is a bit heavy on the family drama and relationship angst, but it’s still been a consistently enjoyable series. This installment is fast paced, has plenty of twists, unexpected revelations and certainly holds your interest.
The book starts with a bang with Sheriff Kate Fox's mother Marguerite confronting a stranger in her artist studio and shooting him dead. It soon becomes clear Kate's mother is hiding something. She's terrified but still isn't talking.
Kate finds a burner phone hidden in the studio with one number listed. She reluctantly uses her estranged sister Diane's help to find answers in their mother's past life growing up in a Chicago suburb. Why did Marguerite abruptly leave her family in 1968? A few years later, Marguerite marries a troubled soldier named Hank Fox and settles down in rural Nebraska. For the next 40 years, they raise 9 kids and she has a successful career as a sculptor. So why is Marguerite wanting to give up her family and run?
Lots of literal and emotional bombshells are revealed as Kate and Diane race to stop their mother & father before it's late.
Thanks to Severn River Publishing for providing an advance readers copy. My opinions are my own.
I received an ARC from Severn Publishing and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with the Fox cildren making Salsa in the kitchen when Kate hears a shot. Kate goes down to the basement where her mother has a workshop and discovers a dead body that her mother shot. Kate then gets her mother upstairs while her sister calls 911. After the police leave, they still have no idea who the dead person is a why he wanted to attack Kate's mother.
Kate begins her own investigation where she discovers her mother's secret phone that had only one number. Asking for help from her sister Diane, she learned who the number as well as the address that was the one caller. The more things that Kate learned had Kate wondering who her mother was.
Read along as each piece of a puzzle falls into place and what importance the number played, why the attack happened and other interesting facts that impacted her family.
Exit Wounds (Kate Fox Book 6) When a stranger breaks into Sheriff Kate Fox’s mother’s studio and is killed in self-defense, Kate takes on the investigation to unmask the mysterious attacker. The attack appears personal, especially when her mother is clearly hiding something. During her investigation Kate discovers a secret cell phone hidden in her mother’s studio containing only one number in the call log. Recruiting her sister’s help to track the number, Kate starts on a journey through her mother’s secret past, where she can no longer trust anything, she knows about the woman who raised her. Shannon Baker’s story plots are always tightly woven, her characters well defined, and the mysteries are involved and intriguing! The chapters are smooth and fast moving. This becomes an emotional page turner that you are afraid to put down. WOW! This has to be the “Best of the Best” of the Kate Fox Series to date!!!
In book #6 of the Kate Fox series, Exit Wounds, Kate’s 70 year old mother shoots and kills a man who entered her art studio and threatened her. When her mom runs away and Kate finds her secret cell phone, the story really takes off.
Kate wants answers, and tries to track her mother down. It looks like her mom has been hiding from the past she left behind almost fifty years ago. This book has a dual timeline, one taking place in the turbulence of the Vietnam era, and one set in current time.
I enjoy the setting and characters but for some reason Kate got on my nerves most of the time. While this wasn't my favorite book of the series, I still plan to continue.
Exit Wounds is book 6 of the Kate Fox series! I read this book in less than half a day! I couldn’t put it down, it was great and kept me wanting to know more of the story! I have read all of the books in this series and this one did not disappoint!
An intruder broke into the Fox home and was shot by Kate’s mother. Her mother was terrified and wanted to run out of fear for her life. This opened a lot of unanswered questions. No one knew Kate’s mother’s past, but of course Kate will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of any mystery. She did some digging and found out a lot of history about her mom and learned some very shocking information in the process. I can’t wait to read book #7!
Sheriff Kate Fox is making Salsa with her sister Louise, all the other siblings have “other” things on the go and can’t make the yearly event, when a shot is heard coming from the basement, their mom’s studio. What follows is an interesting look into the past – and really not something I expected. Their mom, always mysterious, always aloof, … secrets that once out is hard to deal with, but no matter what the “Fox” clan will stand together. If you read the previous books in the series or just jump in here (but be warned you will want to read the others too) - you will enjoy this read.
Another brilliant installment in the Kate Fox series. Kate uncovers secrets about her mother's past that has her questioning what she knows about the woman who raised her. This book is focused more on the family dynamics and is a nailbiter. The characters are relatable, and the storyline has twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend this series. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better if read in order. I received an advance copy of this book from Severn River Books, and this is my honest review.
Shannon is a talented writer I can't get enough of this series.
When a writer can draw you in and keep you there to the very last page, but keeps you wanting more has done their job telling the story. This book does so much more. It took me through a woman in the late 60's and early 70's to today. She was not who she appeared to be. As I read the history of Miriam I felt sorry for her until I hated who she truly was and what she did to her family and husband. The betrayal alone was very bad. I hope she gets what's coming to her for all of the lives she hurt.
This, IMO, has been the best of the series. But I will admit the ending caught me totally by surprise. Not at all what I expected. Kate's mother is attacked in her basement studio and she shoots the intruder. after the attack she becomes terrified for her safety. Her father hides her mother, and then asks Katie to find out who the man was and why he was after her mother. The ensuing investigation reveals many secrets about her mother's past, along with some unexpected relatives—great read and again, a very "shocking" ending. I can't wait to see what the next book brings.
In her time as Sheriff, Kate Fox has solved many cases, but when her mother shoots an intruder in her basement art studio, crime hits too close to home. As Kate digs into the case, she wonders if she ever really knew her mother. A complex plot, fascinating characters and expert storytelling make this book impossible to put down! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
This book was rather shocking to read. Katie and her sister Diane travel to Chicago to visit their mother, who killed a violent criminal. This book covers the life and times of Katie's mother, from 1965 through 1972. The mother was married to a bomber before they divorced and she moved to Nebraska to remarry and bear eight children. Toward the end of this book, Katie and Diane attack the bomber and then reconcile their sisterly relationship.
I was going to give this only 3 stars but kicked in an extra for the last couple of chapters. Way too much of mom's history. The reader needed some but not all of it. What a piece of work their mother is. OMG. The rest of it is a good story.
This bunch is like a soap opera and I can't look away. I'm going to be mad when I have to get to the end and have to wait for the next couple.
Also the family in fighting reminds me of my relatives and again makes me thankful to be an only child. :)
This is absolutely the best book in the series so far! It got my heart sounded, my breath sped up, and it was like I didn't breathe for minutes and I didn't calm down til the storyline calmed down.
When I read, I become one with the characters, no what book or author I'm reading. But this book right here, I felt I could smell the fear as well as feel and hear the heat coming off the bodies in anger from each character!
WOW didn’t expect this all I can keep thinking is OMG how does some tell a story this deep.
Kate’s life is her Fox family and being a Sheriff. She and her family are full of love and hate. Hate is all forgiven every time. But then their Mother who had always been strange killed an intruder. Mom wanted to run but they thought they had her hid. Until the impossible happened and their world fell apart. Sorry I am crying for her husband and nine children. Very great story.
A break in and Sheriff Kate Fox comes downstairs to find her mother holding a gun and the intruder lying on the floor. A cell phone is found with only one number programmed in. What secrets are Kate's mother hiding? Kate takes on the investigation to find out why someone is after her mother. A suspenseful drama to keep your interest.
Kate Fox loves her family and she is puzzled when her placid mother shoots an intruder. Who is he and what is his connection to her mother's past? There are some shocking revelations which Kate finds unbelievable. I could actually feel Kate's heartbreak. A pulse pounding thriller with a lot of twists. An enigmatic and absorbing page turner.
Such a turn of events. This series has connections to the one before and you learn about each character and what they are like. So let me tell you this, this character came out from the shadows with a bang. Her character proves that the past will always catch up to you. There is no hiding from it.
