Unicorn Wings

Rate this book
"I wish I had wings..."

Children and adults alike are in the throes of UNICORN FEVER! The unicorn in this story can heal wounds with his horn. He can make rainbows. But what he really wants is to fly! So he sets off on a quest—past birds and butterflies—to find wings of his own.

A charming story for the unicorn lover—and emergent reader—in your life. Step 2 Readers use basic vocabulary and short sentences to tell simple stories, for children who recognize familiar words and can sound out new words with help. Rhyme or rhythmic text paired with picture clues help children decode the story.

Sometimes you come across a book that has a bad message, but is well-written. Sometimes you find a book that is poorly written, but has a good message. And then sometimes you find a book with neither, and this is one of them.

If this book reminds me of anything, it's the Disney Little Mermaid. Both are about whiny, spoiled ingrates who get what they want in the end.

A well blessed unicorn dismisses all he has and mopes for what he doesn't. He goes around being jealous of animals with wings, and their arguments to him are specious at best. Finally, he is magically given his wish. Now happy, he flies off into the sunset.

If this book has one redeeming value, it's the illustrations. I believe the proper description for the illustrations is "lush." They are the only reason I hesitated to put this book into the trash.

Dad: How many stars, Poppy?

Poppy: How much can it go?

Dad: 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5?

Poppy: 5! POPPY! *reading me typing the review* Why does it say Poppy, daddy? Why does it say Poppy? (Gets distracted, reads book title, starts sing a song about "just like reading a boo-ooo-ooo---ooooook transitioning to "I'm gonna miss you when you're gone...")

Dad: So, Poppy, you still like unicorns then?

Poppy: Yes, I still LOVE unicorn wings. I love unicorn wings, unicorns plain... unicorns EV-reything... ...Except for mean unicorns... but unicorns are never mean...

Dad: What did you like about the book Unicorn Wings?

Poppy: Let's see. Let me look. *Picks up book* WAIT! *throws book down* At the end, because it was happy, because it got wings again! (*looking at the computer*) Dad - there's the book. There's the picture of the book. (Starts singing "Engine, Engine Number 9)

Dad: What else do you like about the book?

Poppy: The illustrators makes the pictures look real, and I like that part. OOhhhh... I know why you typed "Poppy," because I was the one what was talking.

Dad: You read most of the book. What was the hardest word you read in there?

Poppy: Let me see. The words are all pretty hard, except for the ones what I learned. *looking* the hardest word was... ....*looking* ... ... ... this word. Dragonfly. I forgot for a second. That's why I looked.

Dad: Do you think you would read this book again?

Poppy: MAY-be. ...I don't know.... (Reading, "Poppy... maybe... I don't know...)

Dad: Do you think other unicorn-loving children would like this book?

Poppy: Yeah.

Dad: And you think they should read it?

Poppy: Yeah.

This is one of the cutest little kid books I’ve ever read. It's about a unicorn that wants wings. I liked it a lot but I like unicorns, and that is probably why. I recommend this book to anyone that likes little, girly kid books or just likes unicorns like me.

My Review: Again my little unicorn loving heart had to give into this one. I like how it doesn't take on too much of a girly feel and boys can enjoy it too. It did seem a little easy for a level 2 reader but it does have a bit longer sentences. We weren't a huge fan of the story itself but the art was beautiful in this one.

For children who love unicorns they would love this book; the storyline not so good. But the wording is repetitive so makes it easy for a beginning reader to learn to read. It does have beautiful illustrations.

Creo que un libro lindo sin mucho contenido, apto para el nivel de lectura que está pensado con ilustraciones muy lindas que imagino que un niñe que está comenzando a leer puede mirar con atención y maravillarse. Recomiendo.

This book is about a unicorn with a magical horn who still wishes they had wings. The text is easy for newer readers. I didn't love the message of not being happy until you get what you want (in this case, unicorn wings). It has absolutely stunning illustrations. They are absolutely gorgeous!

The booked showed how a unicorn could help all the Forrest animals but he wanted to be able to fly. One day he helped a white horse heal and he wished for wings and they appeared. Dreams do come true for those who are patient and kind. I could use this book to show children that if they are good and kind to others that good things will happen to them.

More of a girl book, I thought. Really pretty pictures. About a unicorn who really wants wings. Goes through different animals that have wings. Level 1-2.
