No-nonsense witchcraft for the everyday modern witch.
Carefully crafted and curated, this book by Lyra Black shares her years of experience and witchy wisdom in a modern and empowering way. Recreational Witchcraft is a comprehensive collection of spells and rituals for everyday use. This handy tome is perfect for the beginner witch and seasoned sorcerer alike looking for inspiration and encouragement through the art of witchcraft. It includes practical spells, bath magic, self-love rituals, and tarot ideas. Lyra's friendly and sometimes humorous writing style keeps ancient rituals approachable and fun. Recreational Witchcraft has all your witchy needs covered to face the everyday with magical vigor!
This book is beautiful and well-organized, but I just can’t cope with the immature writing style and repeated references to her experimentation with weed. I gave it about an hour of time before skipping ahead to see if it got better or more useful - it didn’t.

I've been a practicing Pagan for around 20 years now, and this is easily the best book I've read on witchcraft and magical practice. I was instantly drawn in by Lyra Black's down-to-earth style and dry humour, which guides the reader through an autobiographical account of her own path toward ritual, with each section framed through the author's own life experiences – whether it's cleansing, charming, or cursing, we're given insightful context into how these practices relate to real life.
I can't emphasise enough how much I enjoyed the tone of Recreational Witchcraft. Books on witchcraft tend to drift toward being airy, convoluted, or patronising, yet Black writes in a way which is relatable whether you're starting out or an experienced practitioner – there's a lot to learn, and I'd never even thought of experimenting with bath rituals before! Everything is straightforward and accessible, which is helpful when you have a life to lead and don't have time to spend three weeks preparing a ritual or unlimited money for ingredients. Here, witchcraft is open to everyone.
With its relatable tone, useful insights, and honestly gorgeous printing, this is the only book you'll ever need on the craft.
Recreational Witchcraft is an absolute must read that sets out to prove that ANYONE can be a witch. Filled with stories of the author's time entering witchcraft and her journey with it, Lyra Black has included so much with intent to prove how easy it can be to enter the practice and that there is not a single barrier to entry so long as you can use your best tool, yourself and your own intention.
The book includes a variety of spells one may use, as well as details on how one may deviate from this, learning substitutions and how to make one's own spells! This was an absolute joy to read that I would currently call my absolute favorite book in witchcraft.
For an informative book, it didn’t feel at all like reading a textbook, which I personally found very satisfying and enjoying to read especially for someone who had a hard time focusing in school. I am a new witchling just recently diving into the world of witchcraft and enjoyed reading Lyra’s personal experiences with the craft (even if I didn’t agree with a lot of the life choices personally). There are even quite a bit of different kinds of spells listed, some interesting me enough to actually leave page markers on so I can go back and try them out myself sometime.
