Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

3.5 stars for being a delightfully cute, easy read!

Only complaint: As a history lover, I was intrigued that it was from the Scottish POV while they were dealing with the English Roundheads. I've never run across a book that shows the Scottish or Irish side against that Prig Oliver Cromwell I would love to come across more from this era.

I like this Callie Hutton

There were a couple of books that were so disappointing I have not read Callie for a while. But I loved this book. The hero, while stubborn, was faithful and true and never let me down. He adored his wife, well most of the time and Ainslee was a great heroine. She had backbone and strength and never surrendered. I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next. She switched places with her sister, after he asked for her sisters hand, at the altar and made the laird very happy. I loved at the end, when he said he was glad he chose her! Lol.

Series: The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle #1
Publication Date: 2/28/22
Period: Jacobean/Stuart Era (1653) – Scottish Highlands
Number of Pages: 187

Laird Haydon Sutherland is a man who is large and in charge! He brooks no argument; his decisions are final; he needs no advice; he knows a woman’s role is to provide bairns and keep the castle. Aren’t you already looking forward to him meeting the woman who will take him down a notch or two? If not, you certainly should be because Lady Ainslee Johnstone doesn’t take well to direction. Oil and water you say? Well, perhaps, but a lesser woman would soon become lost in the background.

With the hint of war in the air and a castle keep that needs a good mistress, Haydon decides it is time for him to wed. He doesn’t want love and affection. No, he wants a meek, mild, totally biddable wife who will do as she is ordered when she is ordered. He travels to Laird Johnstone’s to meet and arrange a betrothal with one of his twin daughters. Upon meeting them, he quickly determines that while they may look alike, that is where the similarities end. So, his choice is made almost as soon as they are introduced – it is Lady Isobel for him. She is quiet and biddable – just what he is looking for.

Lady Isobel and Lady Ainslee are very close – even for twins. They have never spent any time apart and even still share the same room though they are adults. When their father tells them of Laird Sutherland’s imminent arrival and a betrothal for one of them, they do not take it well. Typically, they each deal with the announcement in different ways. Isobel with quiet, shy, reluctant dread and Ainslee with loud, vocal, argumentative objections. When the Laird quickly chooses Isobel, Ainslee knows she has to do something to save her sister. Isobel could never withstand marriage to and life with such an arrogant oaf. The solution is simple – they are twins – they’ll just change places and Ainslee will marry Haydon. He'll never know the difference - right?

Can they get away with it? Can Ainslee tame the savage beast? Well, you’ll just have to read the story to find out. I really liked Ainslee from the first, but I think it was Haydon who really kept me interested and reading because I couldn’t wait to see him get his comeuppance. I hope you’ll read the story and enjoy it as much as I did.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A wonderful highlander romance!!!
This was a beautiful story that was written truly well. The characters felt real and alive. It might have helped that it was set in the time frame when the rebellion was just starting.

I always enjoy Callie Hutton’s books! Especially about gorgeous Lairds, with an alpha who knows what he wants and expects. Except that Lady Ainslee is a sassy handful and a challenge.

This is Book 1 in a witty and steamy highlander romance series. I really enjoyed Ainslee, she is daring and beautiful, she can stand up to her husband. But, she soon discovers he is a good husband and trusts her to.
Suspenseful due to wars with other clans.
Wonderfully written with attention to details, great narrative and I loved this couple so much! Looking forward to reading the other books in this fun and exciting series.

Witty

Haydon is a great warrior but he can't seem to love his wife.
Ainslee wants a compromise. She hates the fact that her husband is dictatorial.

Romantic, witty, and entertaining, I enjoyed the romance between the Laird and his bride, who switched places with her twin sister to protect her from Haydon's autocratic nature. Realizing he's been duped, Haydon goes ahead with the wedding anyway, probably having already worked out that marriage with Ainslee will be far more interesting than with Elsbeth. When Haydon lays down the rules of the keep for Ainslee, the battle lines are drawn and as expected, Ainslee argues, defies, and fights him at every turn. However, there is one place where they are completely compatible, and that is in the marriage bed. It is only when disaster strikes that matters come to a head and Haydon is forced to choose between a partnership with his wife and possible estrangement. Fortunately, Haydon's brother has a far better understanding of what is at play, but whether or not Haydon will take his sage advice is another matter altogether. This novel, fortunately, comes to a happy conclusion as the warring couple finally recognizes their need for one another. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I thought I had reviewed this already, but it’s a great twin swap story. He married the wrong twin, wanted the meek twin but got the fiery one. Once he found out, the war was on. Naturally, there is a fine line between love and hate. Moving between the two emotions, the couple became a prime example of what you want is not always what you need. 😍 Fun read, loved it!

Ainslee and Haydon are like oil,and vinegar from the start, but that’s what makes their relationship exciting and passionate. A good romance with lots of fireworks. My only comment is that the timelines are a little confusing and urgency of the events interwoven in the story seem to be superfluous.

Like Ainslee, I was hoping for a partnership--for her to put Haydon in his place, but she kept backing down and it took a revelation from his brother for Haydon to change his ways. This was almost at the end of the book. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't what I expected/wanted either.

Will his need of controlling everything damage any happiness …

A fun first in a new series.
From the moment they meet, Ainslee the outspoken twin has provoked Haydon, the man who is looking for a bride, demure and docile if possible. Well it is a reply in kind as he enjoyed teasing her, even if it was to choose her quiet impressionable sister.
So when they switch place at the altar, he could have stopped the event and denounced the deceit, yet he went along.
Innerly, he knows Ainslee is the woman for him, she challenges him, does not fear him nor steps back. She faces him her head held high, asking for more than being a tool to produce offsprings and feed him. But the man is stubborn and quite satisfied with how things stand. Yet his wife wants a true union, in its whole sense, one of sharing and partnership, not just being a pretty arm candy.
Can he alter his view of marriage to meet her halfway if it may satisfy his bride and bring peace to his couple.

A steamy story. Firstly let me say my preference is regency romance, so I only read occasional
Scottish ones, and so far I have not found them as enjoyable. So bear that in mind that it may colour my review. The story is interesting with a twin taking her sister’s place in marriage. The interaction between Haydon and Ainslee was interesting, but other bits of the story did not ring true. Haydon is a very proud and controlling laird, yet the kitchen and food is apparently in total disarray, and his men have complained for a while about the food. He fixes this almost immediately when his wife points it out, but if he is half as controlling as he is made out I think he would have had the kitchen issue resolved ages ago. Would they also have been as accepting of the stinking rushes on the floor as well? I know Haydon’s sister was acting as chatelaine but I think Haydon would still have taken action. Then there is the spy They are looking for him, yet at the end when he has appeared and stolen the false papers, abducted Ainslee, it’s almost an anticlimax. Yes, Hayden is relieved to get his wife back, but having gone to all the trouble of setting the trap it’s dismissed as we cannot track him down so that’s that. Wasn’t the solar with papers supposed to being watched? That was the reason for placing them there, but Ainslee just accidentally finds someone in there? Then her father wants Elsbeth to marry soon as well but seems content to just leave her at Dornoch with Ainslee. I think he would pushing far more yet nothing is said. So a readable story but bits just did not gel for me.

Lady Ainslee, twin and daughter to the Laird of Clan Johnstone of Lochwood, is fiesty, stubborn, strong, opinionated, and fiercely loyal to her twin sister Elsbeth. The two have been underrated since birth.

Earl of Sutherland, Laird Haydon Sutherland of Clan Sutherland, has decided it is time to take a wife. After meeting the two Johnstone females, he decides on Elsbeth, the quiet demure one. Not wanting to have any issues in his marriage and only wanting someone who could take care of hearth and home, give him bairns, and obey him.

Men and what they think it right and going to happen!!!! Wanting to protect her shy, sweet sister, the two agree to Ainslee's plan and switch places at the last minute. Hard on realizes at once it is the first Ainslee's he is about to wed, however, he says it does nothing to stop the charade..

With tensions mounting about war coming, twins needing to be close to each other, and a spy amount them this story gives you a well rounded appeal on several angles. Can the two learn to compromise or will the marriage be doomed. Will Elsbeth ever look Haydon in the eyes? Does war distort them?

These are just a few of the plots within this details orientated story that will draw you in and capture you imagination. Keeping you intrigued throughout with twists and turns that Calli is so good at. The smallest detail given draws the interest and create a vision that you are there experiencing it right along with the beloved characters.

I have always enjoyed Callie Hutton’s books and this latest one includes!

As I turned the first page and read how the outspoken Ainslee talks back when Ainslee and Elsbeth’s father informs that there will be a marriage alliance between Johnston and Sutherland and the preference will depend on the Sutherland Laird, I knew I would be enjoying it until the last page. Ainslee and Elsbeth, albeit identical twins, has complete opposite personalities. Elsbeth is a quite, sweet and demure lass meanwhile Ainslee is a feisty, outspoken and courageous one. The huge and resolved Haydon notices that he cannot opt for Ainslee as his wife, he reasonably requires an obedient wife who will bow to whatever he says however when he announces that he is going to marry Elsbeth, she dramatically passes out. Wow, incredible! On the wedding day, Haydon has been aware of his switched bride yet as he has compelling attraction towards Ainslee, he lets the wedding rite continue and their whirlwind marriage begins.

It’s a quick most enjoyable read when an inconvenient marriage becomes convenient one. What I love the most from Callie Hutton’s engrossing writing is its slow-burn sexual attraction, how possessive yet teasing Haydon is, the decent tempting foods, and the war between British and Highlanders just adds its attractiveness. Thank you, Callie Hutton for this ARC which I voluntary reviewed.

First of all, I haven’t read a book with twins as the main characters in a while since the last time Callie wrote about them and even then I loved it! The book is an easy read and progresses quite well.

Elsbeth and Ainslee may look alike on the outside but inside they couldn’t be more different, despite this, their sibling connection is beautiful to see unfold as the book progresses.
*Minor Spoilers* In addition to that, the relationship building between Haydon and Ainslee progresses quite well after they marry despite Ainslee’s deception at the beginning. Haydon acknowledges many times throughout the book that he is happy with the switch even though he wanted a less feisty woman to be his wife. Their love life is great but Haydon does not want a partner to help with the running of the estate. This can be at times tedious but I understand why he doesn’t see the point as his parents were not equal partners and Ainslee fights this and eventually wins which gives you the happy ever after that you are looking for in the book.

My favourite quote from the book was “Too many times she imagined the world would be a better place—aye, a more peaceful place to be sure—if women were in charge instead of men always blustering with self-importance”. I’m definitely going to be using that quote often! 😁🙌🏾

Having never read a twin switch book, I found this one pretty amusing. Haydon went to one of his men to marry one of his twins. The fiery Ainslee or the timid Elsbeth. As a fiery Laird, he seriously thinks he wants Elsbeth. Someone to do his bidding and never question him. Not surprisingly he also wanted an eager bed partner and somehow thought he was going to get that from Elsbeth. Or maybe he decided that was the thing he could give up. Who knows.

But Ainslee can not let her timid sister be married to a man she fears so they switch places. Haydon knows of course when Ainslee says her own name in the ceremony but he lets it go. Somewhere in that incredibly dense head he knows what is besy for him.

And not only does she match him in bed, she takes in his estate and turns it around in no time. Even as Haydon fights her tooth and nail to keep absolute control on his reigns. Stubborn fool.

After a bunch of arguments, where Haydon was in the wrong of everyone, Ainslee starts sleeping in her own chamber.

It takes a brother scolding and a near tragedy to wake him up.

I do wish this story was about 40 pages longer, there are a few plots I would like to have seen played out more. Namely the scoundrel Patrick. Unless he gets him comeuppance in a diffferent book? But from the epilogue I'm guessing no.

Entertaining series starter from my fave historical romance writer!

To Deceive a Highlander by Callie Hutton is a great start to a new series about the Sutherlands of Dornach Castle. Ms. Hutton once again combines humor and romance within a historical setting, this time the highlands of Scotland before the Jacobian uprising.
Callie Hutton has created two perfect main characters for this story. Both Laird Haydon Sutherland and Lady Ainslee Johnstone are stubborn, strong-willed, and outspoken individuals. Putting them together in a relationship ignites fireworks that burn up the pages and had me in stitches one minute and melting in a gooey mess the next. The dialogue between the characters is witty and full of snarky banter, which creates some delightful romantic tension between the two lovers.
Callie Hutton masterfully weaves her story around descriptions of the Highlands, the castles, and the clan politics of the time. Reading To Decieve a Highlander was like magically jumping into a sidewalk chalk picture, as in Mary Poppins! I became a time traveler, experiencing highland life through the eyes of Ms. Hutton's well-developed and believable characters. I never wanted the story to end!

I can't wait to read the rest of the series. With any luck, I will never have to return to my own world until after the New Year is well underway!

It’s time for Haydon, the laird of the Sutherland clan, to find a bride. To forge an alliance with another clan, he’ll choose one of the Johnstone twins. And of course he’ll choose the quietest and most biddable of the two, because wives have to obey, bear children and manage the household, and never, ever contradict their husbands! But spirited and brave Ainslee can’t allow her sweet sister to marry the arrogant, albeit handsome laird and takes her place at the altar. Will the deception bring misery to the new couple?
A thoroughly enjoyable book, with two interesting characters, witty banter and fun moments. And of course it’s a marriage of convenience, my favorite trope EVER! With the added bonus of a big, caveman-like Highlander felled by love! I loved feisty, irritating, but brave and lively Ainslee and I even liked arrogant Haydon with his chauvinist ideas. The author did a wonderful job at pitting them against each other and letting love settle their differences. I look forward to reading the next book of the series, where I hope the other sister will prove her true character.

Overall, I don't think the plot was bad. However, the characters left a lot to be desired.

As a Historical Romance, I know that there will be some sexism based on the nature of the times. Yet the male lead (ML) continually astounded me with the way he'd make sexist remarks after sexist remarks. Mostly along the lines of 'A woman's place is....' and 'Men are leaders, women stay quiet....', etc etc (not verbatim but pretty close).

There is next to no character development over the course of the book for the ML, where his views only seem to improve in the last 10-20 pages. Female lead (FL) was presented to be headstrong and tried gaining a say, however, never took a stand against ML until the very end. She still would allow him to belittle her and her capabilities and intelligence just to get with him on the next page of the book.

Maybe I'm a bit too grown for this amount of toxicity - but I would not recommend. If anything, this was more of a hate-read to see if the ML gained any decency or if he would remain that way the entire book. Also, I think I hoped that FL would stop allowing him to continue with the comments sooner rather than later.

I managed to get this book for free from an Apple Books offer - which I'm rather glad for, in the end.

Where is the editor?!

The story wasn't bad, but holy cow, was it full of errors! Totally ruined the experience to have wrong words and weird punctuation jump out and slap you in the face. It wasn't just wrong homonyms that I assume are from using speech wreck to dictate, rather than typing a story out properly, but totally wrong words. At one point, a healer tells Hayden to "fasten" a cane to support his wife after an injury. Obviously, the word intended was FASHION.

Why do people skimp after working hard on a story? A proper proofreader/editor makes it look like you know what you're doing and that you respect the people willing to shell out money for your book. *sigh*

It was also odd that a major story line was the unknown spy they were trying to lure into stealing fake papers with false information to fool the English and bolster a rebellion against them. Suddenly at the end, he appears and their plan succeeds, but that's the end of it. All the angst over whether they'd have to join the rebellion or not simply vanished and apparently, Hayden didn't have to make that decision. All the long absences as he met with other clan leaders and wrote/ read letters just vanished. Seemed very odd to let a major plot line just fizzle that way.

3.5 STARS - ROUNDED UP

This was easily a 5 star review, until the epilogue. So many things not explained, and I dislike when that happens. I was only going to rate it 3 stars, but I did enjoy the two MC and how they interacted with each other. I will give spoilers at the end.

The banter was exceptional between the MC's, and even between the two brothers. I liked that the secret wasn't really a secret before the vows. The H could tell right away he was marrying the feisty sister and not the one he chosen, and I liked that twists.

Romance and love build slowly. Lovemaking within marriage - heat level barely 3 out of 5. Some suspense, violence, great main and secondary character's.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, and tad bit of spice.

***************************************************************************
SPOILER QUESTIONS.

We are left hanging how did the H get to keep Donal. What happened to Patrick and his wife?
Who was the spy? What happened to the h's twin? What happened to the clans going to War? Noone was concerned when the was thrown from the horse, she's pregnant and no mention if anyone was concerned. (ljb)

This is the first in Callie Hutton’s fantastic new series set in the wilds of medieval Scotland, when Clan life was still alive and thriving. As was common of the time clan Lairds would marry their children off to not only strengthen their own clan but also make powerful alliances with neighboring clans. This is how we meet our heroine, Ainslee and hero, Haydon. To save her shy, nervous twin, Elsbeth from marriage to the loud, brutish Laird Haydon Sutherland, Ainslee switches places with her on their wedding day. This all makes it an interesting start to their marriage, not only within their home but politically as well, leading to drama, humor and of course love along the way. This is a great start to the new series, I enjoyed the mix of drama and humor, it made for a delightful read and can’t wait to see what’s next. As always Callie gives us great characters and story that you can’t help fall in love with.

What a outstanding story! Riveting and Suspenseful! I thoroughly enjoy when a book grips you right from the start and takes you on a heart-stopping, sigh worthy journey as in To Deceive a Highlander. Callie Hutton has written a story filled with remarkable emotions, unforgettable characters that are well thought out and each and everyone comes across clearly as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale, passion, a strong plot brims with tension building twist, with setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly and will keep you in the edge of your seat from the moment you begin the journey with Lady Ainslee and Laird Haydon until the very end.

Laird Haydon Sutherland plans to take one of Laird Johnstone’s twin daughters as his bride. He chooses Elsbeth thinking she will be a meek biddable obedient wife. Ainslee is far too opinionated and brash to be the kind of wife he wants. When they arrive at the altar, he finds the twins have switch places. For reasons unknown, he lets the wedding proceed with the wrong sister, believing she will concede to his demands. Not going to happen. Haydon and Ainslee are not exactly opposites that attract. They are more in opposition to ideas on the same topics. They are really just alike in many ways, and they is great chemistry between them, but only in the bedchamber. These two are really fun to watch. Haydon tell Ainslee what she should or will do, and she lets him know she adamantly disagrees. He wants to be the decision maker, for her to realize and keep her place (according to him). Ainslee wants a partnership. Haydon doesn’t know how to deal with her, but when their disagreement threatens a separation, he knows he needs to try. He gets some good advice from his brother. Will it take it? This is an entertaining, fun story. Haydon and Ainslee are interesting characters, and once they work through their opposing viewpoints, they will make a great couple. A perfect beginning for what promises to be another great series from Callie Hutton, this one is a winner.

Easy to read and thoroughly likable characters make this an nice introduction to the new series.
Laird Hayden Sutherland need a bride and decides to choose one of the twin daughters of Laird Johnson. He chooses the quiet unassuming sister Elizabeth, but he twin decided to sacrifice herself so her shy sister does not have to be subjected to Hayden. They switch at the altar.
Ainsley is the complete opposite of her sister and not what Hayden wanted. Yet the clash of wills and every growing love and understanding between them make their “happily ever after” the satisfying conclusion to an enjoyable read.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
