Cronus a shadow organization operating in the grey between humanity and the secret supernatural world. To some, Cronus is a monster. To others, it’s the only defense against a paranormal apocalypse.
All my life, I just wanted to be normal.
Not sick. Not broken.
Normal.
And I tried my best. No matter how crappy I feel, I’ve always been an expert at grin real wide and bear it. I landed my first job at Cronus thanks to a stellar GPA, not Dad’s rank within the organization. I did the grunt work, paid my dues, and never, ever complained.
Three years later, I earned my spot in the intake department, processing all things supernatural when they arrive at headquarters. These days, I love my job. I’m good. Respected. Unflappable, even.
Then three shades fall in my lap.
Arawn, Draco, and Balor…
They gleefully terrorize other intake officers from their containment cells, but when I go in alone, they purr like kittens. One word and these monsters become men so hauntingly beautiful, so dark and deadly, and so, so irresistible it hurts.
They claim to know me.
They claim to love me.
But demons lie. I don’t buy it for a second—
Until they kidnap me and drag me into the shadows, hellbent on proving that the worst lie of all… is the one I’ve been living.
Bride of Shadows is a standalone reverse harem romance set in the Cronus Society universe. It is a comfort read, aka low anxiety with no whiplash plot twists, and an intimate, character-driven, gothic romance told exclusively from the heroine’s POV. It features insta-love (from the harem) and no cliffhangers. Books in this series can be read in any order.
Rhea Watson is a Canadian paranormal romance author who writes lone wolves and found family, fated mates and forever love. She dreams about living in a cottage in the woods that would make any fairytale witch jealous, and wishes every day was Halloween.
In her spare time, Rhea babies her herb garden, watches hilariously bad horror movies with her own hero, bows to her cat's every whim, and flies through Netflix shows like it's her day job.
Selene works for Cronus an organisation that houses and retains supernatural entities when she’s unexpectedly assigned to Sub-level Z as the intake officer to process three strange beings that seem to have an affinity with the shadows everything’s about to change these creatures fascinate Selene and they also seem to have some answers regarding her origins.
Told all her life that she suffers from an unknown immune disease Selene exists on a cocktail of medication she is also controlled by her father a cold severe man who is high up in Cronus. When Selene finds herself whisked away by these men of shadows her eyes are opened and her full potential is finally unlocked.
Nothing actually wrong with the writing with this one and I’ve read and enjoyed this author before so I’m definitely not ruling them out for reading in the future but this one was not really my cup of tea. Frankly, I was bored and it seemed to drag on massively without ever getting to the point. The idea was certainly imaginative but nothing much seemed to happen and I did start to heavily skim just to finish. For me, there was just not enough going on outside the harem to retain my interest.
I also didn’t think that I really got to know that much about Arawn Balor and Draco other than the superficial I felt their deeper background beyond the mythology was a big empty blur this was so hyper-focused on Selene it seemed to relegate them to background noise which was a shame as I wanted to know so much about them and unfortunately Selene alone just wasn’t interesting enough as a character to then carry this alone. This was instalove and sole POV (Selene’s). It’s a paranormal reverse harem and quite a quick read. As I’ve mentioned the writing was fine but this one just wasn’t for me it happens.
This was a cute and fun RH read with an interesting paranormal twist. While I did enjoy the book, much of my viewpoint is tainted by how dense the heroine was. It’ll be interesting to see how the series takes off from here. Any organization such as Cronus may even start with good intentions but as it expands and more people become involved, the shadier and more dangerous it becomes so it’ll be curious to see how the future MCs will be connected to it.
It was good. I feel like it could've been exceptional if some more was put in. It's such an interesting story but something was missing. It went from horrible detox to everything is good, a few demons, who were immediately destroyed, to let's just live a great life. Then after a visit to the bad guys it's HEA right at the end of was over. I realize the shadows are apex predators but I would have liked there to be more of a challenge.
Always one I forget to review straight away and then I forget what happened. This one was a soft smooth ride but pretty predictable. The eternal love thing was sweet and I liked that they were just a small part of it. Three guys that kinda just blended. The pregnancy was strange and unique, I did feel sorry for her though. I liked the puppy sneaking in at the end.

I like Rhea Watson, I've read her other standalones and loved those, but this one didn't hit the mark for me.
While I like the mythology in this story, it just didn't wow me. The mythology around the FMC could have been better in my opinion, maybe it was how long it took for her changes to happen or her inner turmoil about her life, but it just seemed so flat to me. And we don't get any back story on the harem, just that they are ageless and have been around for forever, and that for two centuries they've been vacationing in Hell. We don't know their history or what they've done with their long lives. There's nothing but what happens once they meet the FMC and a short conversation of how they've handled past lovers. Honestly, the men are cardboard cutouts with baseline personality traits to show *some* differences between them.
And nothing really happened in this book. It centered around the four main characters and other than a few, and over very quickly, 'rescue' attempts, it was just the four of them. Traveling while the FMC learned about her new body and the changes to her life, some sexy times here and there, and then the ending. It made for a pretty boring read. I kept waiting for the Oh Sh*t moment, something to really hit the mark and have me on the edge of my seat, but either I missed it or it wasn't there. The ending was anticlimactic and the mystery of her birth was not what I was expecting.
Isn't this cover beautiful? The moment I saw this book in one of my Facebook groups it was love at first sight. Everything about it works for me. The heroine is not your typical reverse harem looking. The atmosphere is amazing. The darkness looks awesome and I was immediately curious. When I read that the book was slightly inspired by Greek Mythology I was sold and added the book to my wishlist. I was lucky enough to grab an ARC and I also got myself the paperback to look pretty.
And the moment I started reading I also fell in love with the writing style. Watson has a beautiful way of bringing the atmosphere and the emotions of her characters to life. And that's mostly because she dares to focus on the atmosphere and emotions, this is what she describes, this is what she's trying to bring across, this is what she's clearly trying to tell us. It was therefore quite hard to put the book down. I wanted to keep on reading and reading and reading.
I also quite enjoyed the mythology in this book. I have to admit that I personally would have loved to see a little more of the Greek mythology parts of this story. What we saw of one of the famous goddesses was amazing and I can already see the possibilities for future books and future stories set in this world. However, especially the scientific part of the story was amazingly well done. I can really imagine something like this being created when the world proves that supernatural monsters exist.
I also really liked the heroine and her journey, although at times her development went a little fast. However, since Watson took her time to introduce her heroine it was quite easy to care about her and to root for her. The ending was therefore quite satisfying to read. But, I would have loved to learn a little more about the guys. It feels a little like they have no life outside of loving our heroine and that's a pity, because it's clear Watson knows how to write interesting characters.
I will for sure keep an eye on future books in this series, though! I can't wait to see what Rhea comes up with!
Looks like Rhea's new series, the Cornus Society, is off to a great start with Bride of Shadows. This standalone has some dangerously devoted monsters, a crazy conspiracy, and a mfc who is learning to live her life on her terms. Not to mention secret societies, dangerous supernaturals, plenty of steam, and a touch of mythology. Of course, I was gonna love this book.
It was great seeing Selene discover the world and herself. She didn't put limits on herself and while she did have a few breakdowns due to the trauma of her past she was still willing to see things for what they are. The guys were there for her, they were patient and devoted but still had that fire and a deep connection. Arawn is the charmer, Balor is the wild one, and Draco is the stoic one. Each helped her find something she was missing and while they had their issues it was way worth it in the end.
One of the most interesting things was the guys, their power, and their creation. The descriptions Selene had of them and the description she gave of their relationship that was evolving and becoming something different as the story went on. The way Rhea describe those connections was touching, I had all the feelings.
I love the plot, the touches of mythology were great. The interesting story of the guys' creation and how their world works really brings out the weirdness that all mythologies have. I have to say the guys have the coolest abilities. You know that question that people ask "If you could have any power what would it be", well their powers would be my answer, I mean they are seriously cool and all the possibilities are excellent. Not to mention the mysterious Cronus Society, whenever there is a secret project at a military base you know things are sketchy. However, looks like the Society will keep on moving on because Rhea has a few more books planned for the series (presumably all standalones) and I'm ready for them. I hope to see a few familiar faces in the other books
That ending was freaking epic, it was so satisfying and I got my HEA. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series.
Watson introduces us to a new world with this stand-alone, this series will be an interconnected world of stand-alones all revolving around the Cronus society.
From this tale (as Watson advises the view of Cronus will change per story and who it involves) we meet Selene , who is supposedly terminally ill of some unknown disease, working in intake to welcome and get information from the “monsters” that enter Cronus. However, during her normal tasks she meets our 3 hero’s..or maybe anti-hero’s..depends on your perspective.
Draco, Balor, and Arwen allow themselves to be captured by Cronus in the attempt to bring themselves close to Selene..and their plan works. Our shadow men are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to them trying to free Selene from her abuse, protect her, and introduce her into who and what she really is.
From the moment our four characters meet there is Insta-love, lust, obsession and genuine feelings. Watson spins a wonderful tale focused around mythology to create a fated love tale that was beautiful to read.
This was a fantastic read that gave us mystery, spice, and retribution. Watson gave us a lot of character depth and each character was not only distinguished, but enjoyable to read. I would have loved to see some multiple POV, but even without it I got a feel for each character.
If you like alpha males only sweet for their girl, mystery, spice, and a play on mythology (Nyx and Erebos) I highly recommend this read.
It's a different take on the beings of monsters. Once the story gets going, it's definitely a passionate and all-consuming love that existing as part of this relationship. They would burn the world down to protect their little raven. These characters may be consider monsters, but the they see right and wrong through a different set of eyes.
Ancient and older than time, these three beings won't let anything get in their way or keep them from Selene. The strange draw she feels toward them . . . those dreams. All of it may be proof that greater is at work, but when they take her she doesn't know if she should fight to get away or to stay? Mysteries, secrets, lies - soon they all get pulled from the darkness into the light and Selene must decide if she can live with truth and trust again or harden her heart.
It's got a monsterly ever after by the end and I would say it's a medium-burn.
Selene has lived her life within a restrictive bubble governed by her scientist father – experimental medications along with a strict diet to combat an unknown chronic disease, not to mention constant medical monitoring. After twenty-five years though she yearns for more; to be more.
I really enjoyed this imaginative, reverse harem, gothic romance based in Greek mythology. In particular, the origin story for the supernatural men and the significance of Selene’s role was quite fascinating. I loved Selene’s journey of self-discovery as she realized her true nature through the love, unyielding support and sheer determination of Arawn, Draco, and Balor. Confident, intelligent and oh-so capable, Selene became quite a force unto herself.
This well written, descriptive tale is told through Selene’s POV. There’s plenty of drama, some mystery, magic, danger, brutality, and violence along with several steamy, explicit sexual encounters, including ménage, but no MM scenes. I’m looking forward to reading more stories set in this secretive world.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author, and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Utterly Unique 🖤 Wow it is a whole new take on shadow monsters that Rhea has created here! Cronus is the institution between humans and the supernaturals where our FMC Selene has been raised under her fathers care….however, as the story develops you soon learn her fathers care is not what it appears 😬 Upon interaction with newly captured ‘shades’, Selene finds a whole new lease of life! She has an instant fate-destined connection with Arawn, Balor and Draco who want to give her the world she deserves and will do anything to achieve that! As the tagline suggest suggests these are monsters on the sheets and doms in the sheets 😍 This standalone brings a whole different insight into the mythical story of Nyx, Erebus and devoted monsters.
Selene lives a crappy life working for a secret organization named Cronus. Her life changes the day she meets Arawn, Draco and Balor. These villainous shades/demons become her saviors. Selene is a woman who has been trapped and controlled all of her life and they give her the key so she can set herself free. I love how they would burn the world for her but never smother or control her. They empower her and I found that beautiful. Each of the men have a unique personality and bring their own strengths to the relationship and I enjoyed the dynamic. I loved seeing Selene evolve and come into her own. This was a great story and my twisted little heart enjoyed seeing the villains become the heroes and win the girl. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
This book gripped me right from the hilariously quirky first page. I've hit a reading slump recently, and this one really yanked me right back out!
Selene's character growth (no spoilers!) was gorgeous to read. The three shadows - each offering her something distinct, be it calm, energy, or sweetness - were so delicious that I find myself now looking at dark corners, wishing for my own. Arawn, Balor and Draco were just perfect. Shadowy and protective with that "burn the world down for her" attitude, but nuanced and oh SO much fun to read.
I really loved that this book had darkness without being depressing. Also, once you reach the end, you look back and realise how damn perfect that cover is. Honestly, highly recommend this!
I didn't realize I had signed up for poetry! Totally sincere here, the story was great but the writing blew me away. Just look at this!!
"...With a grin like heaven and a sigh like sin, Arawn stroked my cheek, his knuckle’s kiss featherlight and torturous. “Balance. Your mother birthed dawn and light, not only night.""
It was almost too easy to lose myself in this writing. I was absolutely in the middle of the action. Highly recommend anyone with a love of Burton or Poe.
This book sucked me in from the first page! Based on the Greek mythology, I loved the story of Selene, Balor, Draco and Arawn. Theirs was a beautiful love story crafted from the night and stars themselves. I can honestly say I’ve never read another reverse harem like this. The conflict with Cronus was well done and the whole plot was so well written. Rhea has such a beautiful way with words and it makes you feel that you are truly immersed in the book. Rhea has done it again with a super unique reverse harem series.
DNF. Started out okay but then I just got really bored. Maybe it was because I started reading other books, but I tried to pick it up between them, but could not get into it at all.
If I had to sum up this book with one word: Stunning. It was just such a visual experience, reading this story. I felt like I could see it all happening and was so drawn in by everything, immersed in such descriptive words and clever world building. Bride of Shadows is so utterly unique and intriguing, I genuinely feel like I’ve never read anything quite like it. It calls to my romantic little goth heart and, goddamn, consider me absolutely smitten 🖤💜
I need more of this world and these characters! Such a phenomenal book, I've never read a paranormal based around Nyx before, it's such a great storyline with brilliant characters. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and hope there's more to come.
As always, the author creates a world that is well thought out and extremely gripping. I love “monster” romance and I really love reverse harem “monster”/paranormal romance.
This is a standalone story in a world that will have more books added. I really enjoy stories that tie together within the same world but that can be read on their own. It continues to build within that world but you never feel like you’re missing anything if you miss a book. This one has a secret society and a bit of Greek mythology.
Selene is our FMC and her guys are Arawn, Balor, and Draco. Selene has wonderful growth throughout the story and her guys are so very interesting. They have a really interesting story of their creation and each have cool abilities.
I was hooked from the start! I think I would have liked a little more of the guys. While they each brought something to the relationship it felt like we could have had a little more information on each of them as far as their character growth. Regardless, I adored them and loved them for Selene.
Definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a wonderful world, a little mystery, some hot reverse harem paranormal fun!
Rhea just has a way!! Her words like poetry, her plots like fine wine!! Her ideas and creations are genius. You had me at three cloak tatters and a feather!! I mean come on!! Just absolutely beautiful story of finding your purpose and finding love at the same time. I love Selene and her men were just swoon worthy from the start. I wish this was a series because I wanted to keep reading. I really enjoyed this book. Anything Rhea writing is just brilliant 🤩
An intriguing plot, I can't say I've read anything like it in a while. However the writing style after the heroin meets her shadows is not to my taste. It felt disconnected, I would have gone with it if this was how she perceived the world whilst her body was detoxifying. As much as I would have liked to know where her story went, I got annoyed at how much she went on and on about them only wanting offspring from her. If they are as old as time it's not like she had a 2 week deadline to pop babies out.I
At about 58% after a whole chapter about clubbing and me falling asleep reading it I called it quits.
Bride of Shadows has an intriguing plot, but it's difficult to parse through and needs to be trimmed down. The intense adoration displayed for the MC kept me going for a while, but it wasn't enough. The writing on a technical level is good, miles above what you typically find in an RH, but it's incredibly verbose and repetitive. Watson will spend entire paragraphs describing the tiniest of details and actions that add nothing to the story. Just take a look at the first chapter. About five paragraphs are spent solely describing plucking out a breast hair. If it's a struggle to read through, and has you thinking: "Wow, she sure is spending a lot of time on this ultimately insignificant thing.", then I recommend you pass on this book. Physical and emotional descriptions are brought up at least every other chapter. I don't need to keep reading about Arwan's black suit, the MC's pale skin and blue eyes, or how Draco seems emotionless but definitely feels something for the MC. There are pacing and transition issues, and it's hard to tell how long the MC is actually with men and how quickly their relationship is developing. One minute, the MC is kidnapped from her workplace and traveling through the forest, and in the next, a week has passed and they're in the city somehow.
The worldbuilding is good, and the writing is good, so I'll just hope the next book in the series doesn't suffer from the same issues.
Rhea has written a tantalising dark, gothic romance with elements of geek mythology and seamlessly blended into a secret organisation at the forefront of the modern world.
Selene is the daughter on of the top scientists that work for Cronus, she had a rare condition that means she's heavily medicated. She has an inner strength, the ability to handle untold amounts of pain and an affinity to process the most demanding and dangerous monsters that come through the Cronus system.
Arwan, Draco and Balor are three of the most dangerous monsters ever caught by Cronus. They are dark, delectable men who calls to Selene unlike anyone she's ever known before. Their connection is otherworldly, it goes beyond a normal physical reaction. I love the guys instant connection with Selene, how they fight to free her from her unknown prison and release the chains that hold her down.
Once the lies start to be peeled away and Selene learns some disturbing and heartbreaking truths the connection between her and the guys grows. Their love is instant, deep and villainous, they will burn the world down for her.
I love how distinctly different Arwan, Draco and Balor are from their looks, personalities and how their relationships develop with Selene. Their journey is intense, hard won but utterly deserved, the world building was mesmerising and kept me addicted to every word.
I never know what to expect when I read one of Rhea Watson’s books, but as usual this book did not disappoint! I absolutely loved this story!!
Selene has grown up in the Cronus Society all her life, where demons and monsters and the supernatural in general are all just a part of everyday life.
When three “shadow men” are brought into the facility for experiments and questioning, Selene’s world is quickly turned upside down. The men take an immediate interest in Selene and it isn’t long before they steal her away from the only home she’s ever known. Selene soon learns that everything she thought she knew is a lie, and with the help of her three “captors”, she discovers so much more about herself then she ever could have imagined.
This book piqued my interest from the very beginning and had me completely immersed in the story the whole way through! I felt like this story was set at the perfect pace, and I actually really enjoyed that it was told solely from the heroine’s POV (whereas I usually find the rh books I read are told from multiple POVs - which I usually prefer). I really loved each of the characters in this book, and while I’m kind of sad it’s a standalone and likely won’t be seeing any more of them in the future, I am completely content and satisfied with how the story ended! :)
Really looking forward to what’s next in the Cronus Society universe!
Bride of Shadows by Rhea Watson is a book in the Cronus Society series, and oh my GIDDY AUNT, it was SO flipping GOOD! I am head over heels in love with these characters and will now officially fight to the death for them. All of them. Each of them. SWOON!
Selene is so dynamic, and understated and darling and relatable and a boss! Stifled even as she thrives, she's living her life the best way she knows how, until her whole world changes. Then, she is along for the ride of, and for, her life!
Arawn, Draco, and Balor. Honestly, what can I say?! They get me hot under the collar, and I am thoroughly smitten with them. Their possessiveness, their barely leashed control, their devotion; it is beautiful to witness.
This story has it all. Love, affection, drama, tension, mystery, mythology, and simmering chemistry that combusts like a lightning storm. And the FEELS. It hits you in the FEELS, wanting that care, that give, that acceptance for those that have been yearning for it forever, and who deserve it forevermore.
Whether you knew or not that you need paranormal reverse harem novels in your life, I'm here to tell you that the short and sweet answer is YES, you absolutely do! So, come join me! I cannot wait for the next Cronus Society novel!
swoon worthy romance in a dark and twisted wrapper
Standalone medium burn RH set in shared Cronus Society Universe. Includes shapeshifters, demons, virgin FMC, instalove, possessive males, mates & bonds.
Cronus is a secret society investigating and if required, controlling, supernaturals. Some come to Cronus as volunteers, others not so willingly.
Selene is the daughter of one of the Doctors, and although her life is controlled by an autoimmune disease she managed to work her way through the ranks of Cronus to become one of the most successful intake officers. Draco, Balor and Arawn are brought to Cronus after being caught in a demon trap with Selene being responsible for their intake. Instantly drawn to these three shadow men Selenes world comes crashing down as she realises her entire life has been a lie.
This is a swoon worthy romance in a dark and twisted wrapper, when it’s revealed what the three males are and their connection to Selene I got literal goosebumps.
Knowing some books will portray Cronus as the good guys while some with portray them as the bad I’m really intrigued to see what comes next from this series.
This is my first time reading a book by this author so am super curious.
Am loving the fark vibes of the cover, from the angry looking woman to the full moon and some type of birds am digging the good feeling vibes i get from looking at it.
Also a good thing the book comes with a soft warning for trigger and tropes, it does have insta-love from the harem, am not the biggest of that.
The insta-love is what i exspected of it tho and i was surprised by how much i liked it in the end!
For a first time reading a book by this author i can say that am hooked for sure will i be reading more books in the future.
The story is writting so nicely it kept me captive and this huge need to keep reading
The characters are amazing i specialy loved Selene's journey the things she had to do and overcome, they way it is writting made me feel a little connected and i loved that. Was not a simple love story it was filled with heartache and beautiful sweet moments
This book is the perfect standalone for when you between books in a series!
Its a masterpiece in perfect balance And worthy of the 5 stars i am giving it!
I’m not sure of what, but I felt like there was something missing in this book.
The book tells the story of Selene, who works in a secret human company that controls/study supernatural creatures and how she was taken by three creatures and discovered she wasn’t who/what she thought she was and how she fell in love with them.
The mythology of the book is nice and interesting, but somehow the story sounds flat, Selene seems quite indifferent to everything most of time, even when she tells she cares. Her illness and recovery appears to be much more a curiosity than a struggle, the attack and attempted kidnapping are presented as facts, her relationship with the guys sounded as something she got conformed with and not a soul deep feeling or a growing realization.
It’s as if she is describing things that happens to her instead of things that she is living and feeling.
Besides of that, the story takes too long to really start, maybe almost half of the book.
Honestly the book is well written and has a interesting plot, but fails to deliver what it promises to and couldn’t hold my attention or curiosity. I felt dragged through a bunch of scenes and empty descriptions.
A new, exciting world from Rhea Watson, and this may just be her best yet. Don't get me wrong, I've thoroughly enjoyed everything Rhea has done, so the bar was pretty darn high, to begin with. I love that no matter the species - vampires, demons, fae, wolves - they feel real. Not necessarily the supernatural part, but their feelings, their wants and needs, are relatable. In this case, we get shadow monsters straight out of mythology, and these guys are intense. The story is told from Selene's point of view, and her transformation was absolutely riveting. This is a gothic romance, and it certainly feels like one with its pacing and the darkness about it. At the same time, it's still a pretty low angst read, which always amazes me about this author. How she can go from dark and intense to witty snark and back again is one of the things I like most about her writing. I'm really liking what I see of the Cronus Society universe, and I can't wait for whatever comes next.
