Holly Ash is good actor. Just one downside: Most of the people she’s acting with have no idea they’re a part of her fiction. One that has been carefully constructed by the secretive company that Holly works for, known as D.O.P.L. Every assignment is a new role, a new name, a completely new self. Her newest role is “Margot” and her newest target: a boy her age named Will Aldrich.
Will Aldrich has it all. Money. Good looks. A powerful family name. He’s even met a beautiful girl named Margot. But his seemingly perfect life crumbles when he realizes that Margot isn’t who she says she is. She’s working for an organization that’s out to kidnap him. Black vans. Men with guns. But that’s just the beginning. Soon Will discovers something impossible: He has been replaced. Someone has taken over his life. Someone who looks and acts exactly like him.
The mysterious organization behind this plot is doing everything possible to wipe Will out of existence. And the only person who can help him is the same person who led him into this situation: Holly Ash.
Told in chapters that alternate between narrators - Holly and Will - Replaced explores the subjects of technology and identity through a fast-paced futuristic thriller.
I grew up in College Station, TX and first began writing in elementary school. I would write stories and poems with the intention of making my classmates laugh. Twenty years later, I used this same technique to write my first kid’s book.
Over the years, I’ve worked a lot of different jobs—farm laborer, art gallery assistant, bartender, assistant literary agent—before settling on the two jobs that I currently hold: Writer and freelance translator. I now live in Brooklyn with my wife and two cats.
After some pretty disappointing cozy mysteries lately, this audible original was a treat! Fast paced, great characters, original storyline, with an ending that left you wanting more.
I didn’t realize this book was aimed at young adults—the writing is very dumbed down. It’s full of repetitive exposition that not only holds your hand throughout the whole story, but is constantly shoving the plot in your face and saying “do you get it? She’s running because she’s scared the bad guys will do something bad! And by bad we’re talking about murder! As in they’ll murder her! They’re chasing her to murder her and so she’s running away from them! Do you understand?! Do we need to break it down more?! Don’t worry, we’ll repeat this 3 more times until you get it…” The whole thing felt incredibly insulting to my intelligence, and I would hope that young adults don’t need this kind of hand holding either…
Cool premise: lazy spouse? Troublemaker of a kid? What if you could tweak those specific parts of their DNA and replace them with a better version? A company called DOPL decided to come up with a solution that does just that.
Great voice actors and an entertaining enough plot but honestly nothing to write home about. I would consider this and average read/listen
It was fine. I chose to listen because the narrators for the audiobook (included with Audible Plus) is narrated by Micheal Crouch and Sarah Beth Pfeiffer. Their narration was quite good, as expected, but the story was just ok.
Holly works for a company called D.O.P.L. Clients hire DOPL to rehabilitate friends, family, employees, etc. that have behavior problems. Holly (and others) work to apprehend the target who is then taken to DOPL headquarters for their rehabilitation. Holly only has knowledge of what goes on during her task...she doesn't know what the rehabilitation involves.
Her target for this mission is Will. She befriends Will with the goal of luring him to DOPL. But things go sideways and Holly learns that DOPL is not entirely what she thought, and that people are not being rehabilitated...they are being replaced.
This book is targeted towards teen/young adult, but I absolutely enjoyed it. It is action packed from start to finish without a lot of drama, angst, expletive language or any inappropriate activities for teens. It was just a good read. This is the second book I've read by Lee Bacon. When my grand-daughter gets a few years older, I will whole-heartedly recommend both books to her. I plan on reading more of his works and will likely recommend those as well.
Start was so promising but then it wheeled off into the fantastical, totally unrealistic explanations of the main phenomenon. Science fiction is enjoyable as long as it feels plausible, and backed by some real science, even if it’s the science we expect to see in a far off future. Could have been a really good book had the author done some scientific research and reined in the flights of fancy.
This was a really good premise and could have been a much more developed story, a longer book or even a series. It was too short to fully explore the ideas introduced.
This was an intriguing story about Holly Ash, she works for DOPL who are a secret organisation who deal with reprogramming people who are not acting in the way that is desired by their wealthy clients.
Holly's role is to make contact with the target, the next team then comes in and collects the target and takes them to the DOPL building.
Holly knows little about what the organisation does, and only has regular contact with one other employee of the organisation. But this changes when she meets Will Aldrich, and she starts to learn about the purpose of DOPL.
This is an interesting audiobook and I enjoyed the different voice actors. I was very drawn into the world which was build and I'll definitely be looking for more Lee Bacon books in the future.
This book was so good that I want a follow up...NOW. (just kidding...not really - lol) This was Sci-fi at its best. A well-written narrative with great characters and just enough cloak and dagger to have me on the edge of my seat. I'm a Lee Bacon fan.
This book was right up my alley! It was futuristic but not unbelievable... definitely plausible in the next century. I like the way the story was told, specifically the perspectives and the twist! So good! I want to say 4 stars but 9/10!

i really hope they continue the story, in a similar way le casa de papelle did. I'd have appreciated a longer ending but it was very satisfying regardless. loved it
Very well-done YA sci-fi/speculative fiction. Characters and plots are as well-developed as any adult novel; what makes it YA is perhaps a little more explanation, main characters are teens, and no sex/profanity. I didn’t miss any of those aspects. Excellent story but I can’t tell too much about the plot because I do not want to spoil it. Suffice it to say, it’s an edge of your seat book. I couldn’t stop listening once I got going!
“Replaced” is wonderfully narrated by alternating male and female narrators, and is available as an included selection of the Audible Plus catalog. If you like science fiction and are looking for a fresh voice, you need to check it out now.
