This book was worth its purchase price to me for the vegie burger recipe alone. I was invited to go on my son’s fifth grade camp as a female adult to support the girls in the class. My immediate reaction was: “so long as I’m not responsible for cooking.” Needless to say, I was allocated chief-cook-and-bottle-wash. But how to bring my poor cooking skills, and personal preference for vegetarian meals, into this highly visible and stressful situation?
Enter Charmaine Solomon’s Lentil, Sesame and Sunflower Burgers and I became the most popular cook these kids had ever had on a camp. I didn’t have to go anywhere near the sausages when they were cooking. The kids wrapped and buried their campfire potatoes for themselves. But the huge batch of burgers I prepared at home, while men kept mumbling vagaries about what cooking utensils may be available, and who had to be negotiated with to procure permission for them, were my life saver before and during the event.
Many other wonderful recipes used for the family over the years, as well as insights to Indian cookery I hadn’t enjoyed elsewhere. The layout of western influence, eastern influences and then east meets west is also very helpful for introducing others to a range of new tastes. As is the occasional photo spread and menu selections with page references to the seasonal recipes for a summer alfresco luncheon or hearty autumn fare.
My most inspirational cookbook for cooking with others, not just for them.
There is absolutely nothing missing from this cookbook, except a few more photos. I like to have photos of each finished dish, but there are so many recipes in here if each one had a photo the book would be impossible to lift! There are wonderful dishes in here from every cuisine on Earth, and if you can't find at least fifty favourite things in here that you will cook again and again then you just really aren't trying! Flicking open to pages at random, I fancy: Greek Egg and Lemon Soup, Eggplant Lasagne, Russian Salad, Vegetarian Dumplings, Soft Pretzels and Indian Milk Sherbet.
