Eyeth: A Young Deaf Man's Perspective of the World
This book, Eyeth, is a book written by a young deaf man, Mavrick Martin. He ran away from home to travel the world with a budget of a homeless person by the age of 18, in spite of journey to discover happiness and meaning in life. This book is basically a diary, with so many actual journal writings, written conversations, and drawings in it that shows the journey of the discovery of ultimate happiness in life.
Mavrick also continues his journal when he was infamously incarcerated in state prison for 19 months. Mavrick journeys in the dark side of America, meeting with countless inmates... conversing with them. All of the written conversations are within this book, with his purpose to show the world what people in prison are really like.
The entire book is a diary, with so many handwritten writings. Mavrick's intention to publish his own diary is to provide a unique perspective of life, coming from a person who only communicates through sign language, not verbally spoken languages.

He claims he writes English fluently. Here I am scratching my eyes out. Four fucking commas in one short sentence. Then missing Oxford comma in the next. Uses word “barely” twice in same sentence. Overused “infamous”. Weird capitalizations. Using two adverbs next to each other. “Severely violently arrested”. Misspellings.
Considering Deafhood as a race is DUMB. As a white man, stop making yourself look like you’re BIPOC. You’re fucking Deaf. You’re fucking white. Don’t put racism in audism. Using the word “normal” to define hearing people is audistic!
Quoting shit without proper citation makes my academic brain cry. Claiming that “theoretically the brain splits its function onto 5 separate senses by 20% each” and deaf people 25% into 4 senses. Again, citation and I don’t think this is even scientifically proven because we only use 10% of our brain.
Writing something in Spanish and asking us to guess what he said is narcissistic as heck! Showing off that you’re so Intelligent enough to know Spanish and makes you better than us.
Claiming that you prefer to not work and live on a free money from SSI is harmful. Government might take away that access now. How stupid.
Claiming that America is the only country that thrives on capitalism and that’s what made Americans unhappy is idiotic as heck. I don’t know if he even realizes that there are 200 other countries in the world. THAT CLEARLY THRIVES ON CAPITALISM. It’s a global thing not just US.
Claiming that America is the wealthiest country in the world is appalling. Gently nudging him to take a quick Google check.
His journal entries of his travel accounts are coherent and clear. But, the main writing in the book is all over place. A clear imagery of what his mental health looks like then and now.
It’s interesting how he considers prison as “underworld”.
Why did he originally spend 6 months in solitary confinement? Later found out it was because he’s deaf. Wanted to keep him “safe”
Gained 20 pounds in “muscular mass” from drinking 6 cartons of milk everyday seems far fetched.

He claims that every inmate he talks to is very spiritual or whatever. But I can’t help but to wonder if they look at Mav like he’s nuts but went along with it because they have nothing but time.
Not sure what “guts and visions” referred to but if he’s having visions then I think it’s telltale of having delusions.
Calling himself “I am officially a full-grown true magician now.” when he got a verdict that he’ll only serve few months. Claiming that universe really is a safe place once you listen to your within. This is a privileged thing to say as a white man.
Saying that jail/prison is like a vacation. WTF?
One said he would prefer to be arrested in Latin countries than USA. Then later in his conversation with an image said “don’t get arrested in Mexico, trust me!”.

Becoming friends with a juror that voted not guilty after everything. I don’t think this is even real.
An inmate straight up asked Mav how did he feel when he took someone else’s life. But he seems to leave off his answer to that inmate. He white/black out some of his answers.
Mav wants to become under-the-table surgeon. He basically said he wants to be a black market doctor. Said he want to become a vet to develop knowledge then do it on people. Somewhere in Mexico or “less-governed countries”. What is this fuckery?
I found it interesting that Mav didn’t mention a lot about his kid.
Describing a white kid who has been arrested 6 times before he turned 21 as the greatest idol as “victim of the system” is the most ignorant thing you can say.

In this book, Mavrick paints a clearer picture as to why he is the way he is today. His personal diary entry while he struggles with depression and decides to travel is probably the most interesting part of this book- as it feels a bit autobiographical and correlates nicely with the timeline up to his murder.
But this book is riddled with terrible formatting, typos, and whatnot— which Mavrick himself stated as insignificant and that he would not “write in fancy grammar where everyone won’t understand.” So at times the book feels like one endless Facebook status update.
There are also varying repetitions of what he has discovered “within” and how we should become magicians based on that knowledge. Feels like the book could have been shorter and made more of an impact by removing these repetitions.
The prison conversations were interesting but quickly became useless after a few photocopies as Mavrick already summed up his interactions. It was nevertheless an intimate look of what life was like inside prison— as a white deaf male.
I was surprised by his ability to draw and will not deny that I am intrigued by his almost never ending motivation and energy to do something different- he is not another sheep amongst the world.

This book really reveals how his mental health have declined throughout the years.
The beginning of the book which was obviously written before his chaotic experience has started. It mainly focused on his traveling, his thinking and how he viewed things and life did make sense. As soon I reach to middle of the book and chapters that focused on recent events of Mav, it displayed obvious signs of mental health decline. His repetitions, views, choice of words and his approach really raise concerns of stability existence of his brain functions.
I am not licensed psychologist however based on the book, I can see the evolution from beginning to the end. I am confident that mav’s mental health unfortunately has worsen and is needing medical attention but because of lack of medical attention, he has become the person he is.
