A puzzling murder. A crumbling diarchy. A Blood Vier summoned to quell the ashes of corruption.
Taryn wants nothing to do with the father who abandoned her. She bolts at her first glimpse of freedom, only for a mysterious man to track her down, claiming her father was murdered and she is the key to finding the killer. She strikes a bargain, traveling to the kingdom’s capital where she becomes an unwilling player in a political game against the opposing sovereignties and her father’s suspected killer.
As a Blood Vier, a blood heir come to vie for her father’s position, Taryn is now the prime target of assassination for her interference. She seeks evidence to bring down her deadly opponent, enlisting the help of the cocky prince and a despised healer. But as her father’s secrets begin to slowly unravel, Taryn is caught between duty and freedom, questioning where her allegiances lie and how much she is willing to sacrifice.
Treason haunts the kingdom halls, death stalks close behind, and betrayal is only the opening act. Taryn has spent her life shrouded in secrets and deception, and she’s done playing the pawn.
Christy R. Harrill is the book loving and anything medieval fantasy obsessing author of the Blood Vier series. She lives in Oklahoma where she enjoys hiking with her dog Hank and devouring every book she possibly has time for. Christy loves winter, and still hopes to attain the dream of getting snowed in with four feet of snow one day. She thinks that the only good thing about summer is wearing sandals, and has a weakness for buying pretty notebooks—even though she already owns far too many blank ones at home.
The Blood Vier marks my very first ARC that I received from NetGalley and oooh how I am glad to have waited until now to review it.
Okay. So. This book is pretty self explanatory. Read the synopsis and a reader pretty much knows what they are in for. It is within the first 4-7 chapters that a reader will either find themselves loving this or wanting to completely DNF this. Unfortunately for me, I wanted to DNF this as soon as I finished Chapter 4. But, because I was waiting for a certain book on Libby, I decided to stick this one out.
Do I regret forcing myself to read this??? Not entirely. Will I be continuing the series??? Nope. Am I upset that my first ARC turned out to be kind of off putting??? Absolutely!!!
See, The Blood Vier is equal parts entertaining as it is meh. The first 50% will probably annoy you. There are a million and one characters that you have to keep up with and majority of these characters are angry over a thousand different things. Themes of betrayal, treason, mistrust, and murder hit you as soon as you read Chapter 1 and continue throughout the entire book. You might even find yourself rolling your eyes over the mistreatment of the FMC, Taryn Gallows (I know I did). The reader is hit with just so much information and misdirection that DNFing this early on is very understandable.
However…
What saved this book for me, aside from waiting on my Libby hold, was the audiobook. The Blood Vier is rated a solid 3 stars because it is told in two points of view: Taryn and Vladimir. The two narrators selected for read this book via audio did an amazing job with bringing both of these characters to life as well as their relationship with one another and with all the million and one side characters. It because of my lack of enjoyment with the storyline that I found myself reading this at 2.75x speed, which helped me finish this in 24 hours. And while I won’t forgot anything from this book anytime soon, I do believe that this book, let alone this series, should be read with caution. It is not a book for newly discovered Fantasy readers. The Blood Vier is more for YA Fantasy Lovers who just might find themselves wanting to grab ahold of this series and never let go. As for me, new to the fantasy world altogether, this book was decent enough to finish but, not motivating enough to continue the series.
Best of luck to Christy .R. Harrill on all of her future endeavors, including her writing career.
Thank you NetGalley and Rose Hollow Press for granting my request of an Advanced Reader’s Copy in exchange for my honest and personal opinion!!!
I have mix feelings with this one but the one strong thing I will say about it is, I do encourage anyone who enjoys a good YA book surrounding kingdoms, political games and the idea of loyalty to the crown to give this a read. If you like the genre presented in the Shadow and Bones trilogy, King of Scars or the Cursebreaker series, I think you will find this to be a good read.
To start with the things that I like with this book, I really enjoyed the world building. I love the concept of how the crown isn't the final say in everything but how it has a counterpart to help make the decision more fair. I love the characters introduced to us and their personalities. I also found the idea unique where it's almost like a murder mystery mixed in with protecting the kingdom.
There is also some lovely themes in this book and I liked how our main character grew to understand that what she wants may not be the best for the country. Loved how she is willing to sacrifice her freedom to protect something bigger than her. There was strong character development from Taryn too as she realizes learning to forgive will help with the bitterness. I loved it.
What wasn't really working for me was the pacing and character actions. While I like a story that doesn't drag out, I found The Blood Vier to have a rapid storyline. I would have preferred a slower down pace where events were more detailed and a little more thought out. The writing was very easy to read and follow along (always a bonus) but there were many common and cliché sentences used. While that is not necessary bad, I found myself noticing it more and more through out the book.
For character action, the repetitiveness of getting caught, almost dying and getting saved wasn't my favorite part. I do not mind that happening once, but when it happens more than that, I do become wary of it. This however is my personal opinion, I just wanted something else to happen. The actions would again go with the pacing of book, where I think it can be slowed down and more thought out.
Overall, I think The Blood Vier has a unique storyline with loveable characters and themes. I do think the writing and pacing can be improved but for a debut novel it was a great start. I am excited to see where this story will go and can't wait to continue on with this adventure.
This book destroyed me. I can't wait to be able to share it so I can ruin other people's lives. (Insert evil laugh) Honestly though, it was so good! Christy is so talented and I can't wait to see more of her work!
tl;dr Fast-paced plot with a lot of action pieces, but doesn't give the entire cast enough space to shine.
Thoughts Dang this one moves FAST. As in, it feels like the plot of the first two books in a trilogy have been smooshed into a single book. Our titular blood vier shows up to vie for a position as her role suggests, leaving me to expect a book's worth of training, tests, sinister plot hooks, and a slowly developing relationship with the other leads. Instead, we race past the actual vying portion and jump straight into what comes after. On the one hand, I appreciate that the author didn't lock all the big action pieces away for the next book. On the other hand, I feel like I didn't get to know the cast nearly well enough before they went on their big adventure, leaving me to play catchup as the plot unfurls. The second POV character gets so much less attention than the first that part of me wondered if it was fully necessary to have him at all when we could use that time for other things. The healer character mentioned in the book description also gets very little air time. She's got a lot of history and a lot of personality, and we get only the barest glimmers of it before breaking off to do other things. And there are plenty of other things to do. Chase down leads, escape from kidnappings, prevent war, break out prisoners, and even fight the elements. Overall, I'd say there's a lot of stuff packed in here with some interesting world-building (especially that cliffhanger stinger!), but I yearn to get to know the supporting cast better.
Thanks to NetGalley and Rose Hollow Press for a review copy. All thoughts in this review are my own!
I can give this one of the highest compliments (for me): When I started, I planned to listen to a few chapters initially. Before I knew it, I looked up and was at 50%. I struggled to put this one down.
Taryn, finds herself unwittingly entangled in a web of secrets and deception following the death of her father. Having had a complex relationship with the mysterious man who visited only occasionally, Taryn decides to abandon her home following his death since nothing is holding her there. When thieves attack her on her way out of town, a stranger saves her life; a stranger who was her father's protege. A stranger who informs her that her father's death was murder and he means to bring those responsible to justice.
From the outset, Harrill sets the stage for a gripping tale as Taryn is thrust into a dangerous game of politics after the mysterious murder of her father. This story weaves together elements of murder mystery, fantasy, and political intrigue, creating a gripping and immersive reading experience. The twists and turns of the plot kept me eager to uncover the truth behind the kingdom's secrets and Taryn's father's murder.
As she navigates the treacherous waters of the kingdom's political landscape, Taryn grapples with her own complex emotions due to her somewhat estranged relationship with her father. Which is, of course, complicated by his having been murdered. Especially when she is thrust into a world in which everyone knew him better than she did. Despite feeling abandoned by her father, she evolves throughout the story, coming to terms with his actions and finding the strength to confront her own demons. Her journey from a reluctant pawn to a determined player in the deadly game of power showcases Harrill's skill in crafting multifaceted and relatable characters.
My biggest criticism is that Taryn never really learns much throughout this first book despite the repeated lessons, so I hope that she evolves a little more quickly in the next few. I was also a little disappointed that she had to be rescued repeatedly instead of doing it herself. Especially since we learned that she'd had training.
The dynamic relationships between Taryn and the supporting cast also bring something special to this story. From the smarmy prince to the despised healer to her rival to her father's protege, each character brings their own motivations and complexities to the story, keeping me engaged and guessing until the very end. William's complicated relationship was a favorite of mine.
Since I listened to the audiobook - Taryn's narrator was amazing and I really enjoyed her voice work. Vladimir’s was also wonderful, but a little less lively - which suits the character but makes the action a little less exciting. I also believe they're the same age, but his VO sounds older and I am left feeling like Vlad is something like a father figure. I'm not sure if that was the intention.
So grateful to BOMM and the author for the ALC. This is an honest review and all opinions are my own.
I received this book from the author as a mid-series arc and it sat waiting patiently to be read! The third book is coming out soon so I was prompted to give this a go.
I really loved this book, it gripped me from the get go and kept me guessing along the way. There is plenty of political intrigue and lots going on, Taryn is a great character who I really began to love and am excited to find out how her story continues.
It’s not often I immediately want to read the next in the series but I think at about 70% through I was already thinking about the next book and seeing when the third is out!
Taryn has been left to fend for herself after her mother and father have died, the story starts with someone finding her and unravelling her plans for her future. She is thrust into a political plot of treason and is pivotal in the Kingdom’s story, she uncovers some truths about her heritage and looks to understand her place in the world now she is on her own.
The twists and turns elevate until we reach the end of the story where there is so much more at stake than just Taryn and her future and we have some great foreshadowing for the story to come!
I found this well written and a good pace, it’s a fantasy world but the characters are all human and there is little in the ways of magic so far and no real romance, a tiny whiff at one point but I’ve gotta say I was quite thankful that wasn’t the main plot, it was refreshing to have just the character development, plot twists and storyline as the focus.
There was great relationship and character building, with dual pov giving us insight into not only Taryn’s thoughts but also Vladimir’s.
The world building was great, there is a rich tapestry of different peoples and groups, with the culture coming through really well. I could envisage this all so well and I feel like this was the tip of the iceberg of what we are going to see going forward.
I feel like I kind of know what might happen next but I’m so excited to find out if I’m right or not!
I highly recommend this book, if you like shadow and bone, the darkening and year of the reaper I think this will be right up your alley as well!
I did receive this as an arc and this is my honest review.
TEEN & YA Fantasy Book 1 in a series Political intrigue Murder mystery
Taryn’s world is overturned when she is tricked into vying for her estranged, dead father’s place in the Kavari. She wants nothing to do with her father who has abandoned her and her mother and when she sets off to start a new life for herself in another city after the death of her mother, she is stopped by Vladimir who informs her that her father was murdered and that he needed her help to avenge his death. He tricks her into replacing her father in the Kavari which just leads to trouble from start to finish. There is so much castle drama going on in this book so you can expect backstabbing, treachery and a lot of “get rid of the newcomer” energy. This is a fast paced Teen YA book. It did leave me with a lot of questions and I am sure that book 2 will have all the answers to my questions.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own. A huge thank you to Netgalley and Rose Hollow Press for this e-arc.
What a fantastic read! I loved the storyline and character development. There was a beautiful message of forgiveness, how bitterness can affect your life and that vengeance always comes at a cost. Definitely recommend this to all fantasy readers!
I think that this book has great potential. The cover is brilliant and drew me in. The description on the back of the book also led me to believe that it would be similar to many of the books that have been so popular lately with different twists involved that would keep me interested. However, I’m sad to say that I finished the book just to say I finished it. The book was a poor man’s copy of the Throne of Glass series. I will say that I was buying into the concept that I would have to think and guess on who the traitor was. Well. The list of possibilities was very short, and I wasn’t at all shocked when the guy who said he would kill Taryn ended up being the one who was trying to kill Taryn and betray the crown. Then the rest of the book is everyone on a horse chasing after someone or being chased. Also does Taryn know how to do anything except for the least logical thing? Let me just say this. The fact that Beva had to die was infuriating because it was indeed for no reason. Taryn didn’t have a plan and took a child’s mother for a piss poor plan. If I were Helva I would track Taryn down and murder her myself. Nothing about the book was subtle. I was not surprised by anything that happened. Oh and don’t even get me started on how Vladimir didn’t suspect creepy Zedekiah. And let’s just think. If you were trying to figure out if another country is involved in the treason, then how in the world could you miss the most obvious clue that was at the murder scene. 7 bodies burned. And Brenden burns their dead???? HUH?? You just forgot that until the last chapter then Vladdy daddy??? I will not be continuing the series. But I will be looking up the ending. I’m going to guess here (and I may be wrong) but let’s just say that Taryn’s mom is from Brenden, perhaps a royal family member, and that this will come into play. Or maybe magic starts showing up? I don’t know but the strategies throughout the book are superficial at best. DNF the series.

Revenge can not solve or erase the sorrow and pain no matter how much you want it to. This is something I discovered through this magical book, The Blood Vier. I found myself addicted since page one as I followed this story of a girl who begins to discover her identity. This book is about a young woman named Taryn who finds out her father that she barely knows is not who he appears to be. His death comes about her realization that she has a connection to the royal government called The Kavari. Her father was the leader of said government. Taryn gets pulled into political struggle as her fathers murderer is unknown and is forced to help the next Kavari leader find out who the culprit is. She begins to learn more about her identity and goes through internal torment, as she mourns for a father who was never there for her. The path of revenge begins to eat at her....
I found this as the perfect Kingdom fantasy story falling in love with the characters every turn of the page. The protagonist, Taryn, is such a genuine and raw person. Authors always try to make their protagonists so fake and unreal to the point that no one can relate to them. I loved that Christy made Taryn someone I can actually relate to! Taryn is a strong female character, but not because it says she's strong or because she is given overly masculine traits. She is strong because of her character and how she reacts to certain events. It makes sense that she can fight and use a bow expertly. Her father taught her to protect her. Taryn is strong in the fact that she chooses to enter danger even when she has the ability to walk away from it. She wants to do what is right, even if it isn't the safest option. But, she isn't perfect either. In fact, she has many many flaws she is working through. I think she is seen as strong because of her flaws. Her strength is seen as she combats these struggles and flaws. Growing as a character.
I also love how she doesn't fall in love with any of the male characters simply because they are in the story. The Kavari leader, Vladimir, and the Queens son William are both great characters who could later on become romantic interests. But, they weren't originally written in FOR the romance. They each had a purpose in the story, not because Taryn was supposed to fall in love. I love how William and Taryns relationship starts of rocky and real. To the point that they actually detest each other. They both have different perspectives on life. But, as they go on this long journey, from being enslaved to imprisoned. They begin to learn respect for each other. If a romantic relationship sprouts between William and Taryn, it would actually make sense. Their relationship has grown and become complex through trials. They won't love each other simply because there has to be romantic tension. It will be because they fall in love. Real love, not some fake toxic and abusive enemies to lovers crap.
I also want to touch on Vlademirs character, just for a second. We still don't know a lot about him. But, we do know that he deals with intense internal conflict (and by the way, I think this is key to good, solid characters). Even with only knowing that he studied under Taryns' father and is now the leader of the Kavari, we care about him because of his hopes, desires, and even internal torment. We can tell it is very difficult for him to have just lost his master and now being the sole person to hold the entire government system together. He is trying his best, but I think he is coming to realize he is holding on to more than he can handle. I hope to get to know Vladimir a little more in the second book. Maybe in hopes that he realizes he can't do everything ALONE.
I give The Blood Vier 4.5 stars and enjoyed it immensely. I can't wait for the second book and then the third, and if there were more, I would keep on reading! 😀 Christy R. Harril did such a good job creating political intrigue, complex, and genuine characters, plus important themes creating a meaningful story. I also want to thank her for letting me be an ARC for this book and will definitely be buying the second one!
“I thought Death would taste bitter, but it was surprisingly sweet”
“My father had been the most powerful man in Gharridan”
“Whether you like it or not, Taryn, your father was the leader of the Kavari, which makes you a Blood Vier. You have a claim to the Kavari, and you always will”
First of all, A MASSIVE THANK YOU to the author for sharing an ARC of this AMAZING fantasy book with me !!!!
Wow just a million times wow !!!!! This book was otherworldly amazing and I’m not kidding it was something a 1000 times more than what I was expecting When I first started it, from the very first pages, I felt caught in the story, in the plot, the amazing world, the magical references … it’s just gorgeous!!! A young girl, losing your mother, being completely cast aside by her own father, and then finding out that her father is dead and there is a stranger, a knight, a soldier coming to her saying that he needs her help to find out what happened to her own father … because it was murdered!!! I was so interested in it and genuinely focused on trying to figure out the truth behind what had happened and trying to understand how the author would’ve wanted to develop the story. And then there was the characters’ dynamic … it was SOOO GOOD !!!! Honestly I felt in love with half of them and Vladimir … oh my goodness that Vladimir completely unraveled me!!!! The book in and of itself, apart from the story, was so easy to get into; short chapters and a way to end each chapter is a cliffhanger !!!!! And don’t let me even start on THAT ENDING!!!!! Miss author please I need book two know !!!! The ending scene was amazing but the epilogue ??? You guys have to get to the bottom of it all to understand what I mean but … it’s so worth the time !!! I cannot wait for it to be out and the series to continue. This Blood Vier was a surprise and I truly hope that it’s gonna continue to surprise me on the long ride !!!
“The central problem accosting me now, among the many others, was keeping Taryn’s identity a secret from here on out. Her life might depend on it”
“You can criticise yourself and the chooses you’ve made until you’re blue in the face. Don’t. Learn from them, then move on”
This was such a strong fantasy novel! I usually need at least a dash of romance, but this had none (maybe a tiny drop) and I enjoyed it. The world building was excellent and the characters were compelling and complex. The audiobook narrators did an excellent job and kept me engaged throughout the book. I will definitely be continuing on with the series as I am curious how things will play out for several characters.
𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱? Yes, for high fantasy lovers 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹? Yes, adding next to TBR
Thank you to the author and Book of Matches media for providing me with a copy of this audiobook. This review is voluntary, and all opinions expressed are my own.
Politics and all the kingdoms! The different characters and personalities was a fresh perspective. I also enjoyed how the ruler was not the sole decision maker. Excited for the next book!
I found this book randomly and I was glad I did! I really enjoyed the characters and their connections to each other. Harrill does a great job during the action scenes--keeping it fast-paced and still detailed. I enjoyed the political intrigue and am looking forward to book 2.
Wow. What a ride this book gave me. I really appreciated the messages of forgiveness it sent throughout Taryn's journey. Also, look at the beautiful cover?! It's one of my favorites ever.
First, the reader is in for many twists and turns. I wanted to be a full blown detective and solve Michael Gallow's murder. My first hypothesis was quickly found to be wrong and after that my second was wrong. At times, I thought I knew exactly where this book was going but I was wrong. You will be kept guessing. I went through thinking every single character was going to betray the kingdom. That itself was fun to experience as a reader.
The characters were likeable. I do wish there was more physical description/ imagery of them. There is a fairly interesting, small redemption arc with Prince William's character that I liked. He is my favorite character. However, I am always biased toward a cocky prince. Taryn's character is very headstrong. I wanted to fight her myself at times and found myself saying out loud "this is all your fault!" However, I feel like the author knew where she was going and wanted to go with Taryn despite me wanting her to be saved by someone else a little less.
In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good YA fantasy book. I seen where this book has comparisons to the Cursebreaker series and I agree with that. I cannot wait for the next book to dive back into this world.
I am very honored and offer many thanks to Christy Harrill for sending me an ARC!
Harrill weaves a captivating tale of fantasy--blending elements of political intrigue, mysteries, and the more emotional topic of dealing with grief and healing. I found myself flying through the book and completed it within one sitting. It was so easy to get immersed into the story and captivated by the mystery. Who had killed Taryn's father? Why had they done it? Every question made me want to finish the book all the more. The ending was beautifully poignant and I felt that it wrapped up the relationship Taryn had with her father perfectly. That epilogue though... it left me hungry for more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
When she finally can leave her life behind Taryn starts to travel away from her hometown until a man tracks her down revealing that the father who abandoned her was murdered. She strikes a deal with the man to go to the kingdoms capital where she thrusted into a political game that she has no choice but to play.
I loved this book. It was interesting and I did not get bored while reading at all. There is more political intrigue than anything else and so much action. I cannot wait for book 2. 5 out of 5 stars.
The Blood Vier by Christy R. Harrill 5/5 stars! This is an amazing read, it explores loyalty to the crown, politics, betrayal and more with a hint of romance! I would definitely recommend this to family and friends, it written beautifully and made me grab the next books straightaway! If you want a quick exciting read then I definitely recommend this. Thank you to Christy, the publisher and NetGalley for such a wonderful arc! I cannot wait to read more books by Christy!
Thank you Netgalley and Rose Hollow Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
"The Blood Vier" is a thrilling YA fantasy novel that mixes political intrigue, mystery, and themes of loyalty and sacrifice, making it a compelling read for fans of similar series like the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Cursebreaker series. While I am not a big fan of YA fantasy recently, I really enjoyed the world that Harrill created; I thought the world-building was really well done, especially since this can be a challenge in YA books.
The story follows Taryn who is thrust into a world of political turmoil after the murder of her father, a member of the secret royal government known as the Kavari. As Taryn unravels the mystery surrounding her father's death, she discovers truths about her own identity and her place in the kingdom's intricate political landscape.
As stated earlier, one of the book's strengths lies in its world-building, which is rich and immersive. The concept of the Kavari adds depth to the story, as does the exploration of Taryn's internal struggle as she grapples with her desire for revenge and her growing understanding of the greater good. Harrill's character development is exceptional, particularly with Taryn, who undergoes significant growth throughout the story. Her journey from recklessness to understanding the importance of sacrifice is both compelling and relatable. At the beginning, you sometimes think that Taryn is making stupid decisions, but that is totally expected of someone her age who is suddenly thrust into this position/situation. She really does demonstrate significant growth in the book. At the beginning, I thought Taryn was a bit selfish and naïve, but at the end, I found myself attached to her character. Additionally, the dynamic between Taryn and other key characters, such as Vladimir, the leader of the Kavari, adds depth to the story as Harrill expertly crafted complex relationships, which made me like Taryn even more.
The pacing was sometimes a bit too fast where I barely had time to absorb events in a specific scene before suddenly rushing off to another. I think some scenes needed more time to fully develop the emotional impact. Some scenes were also a bit repetitive. I also wasn’t expecting the lack of romance; this was unexpected but welcomed. I thought the lack of romance allows the focus to remain on the character development and plot, which are executed with skill and precision.
Overall, "The Blood Vier" is a promising debut novel that sets the stage for an epic fantasy series. With its engaging characters and immersive world-building, it is a book that left me eagerly waiting for more. Harrill has crafted a compelling story that will appeal to fans of YA fantasy and political intrigue alike.
The Blood Vier had me staying up way too late and on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time reading it.
This is packed full of political intrigue, WELL THOUGHT OUT political intrigue! And I loved every second of it. I love the mystery behind Michael and I love the mystery behind Taryn’s mom’s heritage as well. I’m so curious as to how Taryn’s mom fits into all of this.
You get both Taryn and Vladimir’s POV, and I enjoyed both characters. Taryn struggles with some anger over things that happened to her and her father, but has some real satisfying personal growth and she was easy to sympathize with. I also liked the side characters William and Katherine.
There’s no romance in this book, but I skimmed the end of book 4 because I needed to know which guy to ship, so I know there will be some romance in this series, and I know who to get attached to 🤣
Worldbuilding is spectacular.
The writing is really good too. There’s no info dumps, and the author does a good job of giving just enough description without bogging the reader down. I also didn’t notice any typos. I’ve already bought the next book, but I’m going to make myself wait til a more decent time to dive into that one.
The only things I didn’t enjoy about this book, and kept it from being a 5 star for me was how Taryn talked about death. I really hated how she referred to it being sweet at times, THOUGH towards the end she does backtrack and realizes death isn’t sweet, but bitter. I also didn’t care how death is almost referred to as being a person. (Which is ironic because I love the book Keturah and Lord Death, and death is a person in that book 🤣🤣). This is really a very very minor part in the book and not mentioned much, but some of it is on the very last page, so it’s extra fresh in my mind, lol. ***spoiler** Secondly, and I know this is prolly going to play a part in the next books. But Taryn not trying harder to go back for Helvah 😭 she was all gun-ho for going into the prison even though it was reckless and near impossible, but with Helvah she didn’t even try. Didn’t even try after what happened to Beva, and Beva’s last words! Ugh! **end of spoiler
Overall an excellent book! Definitely recommend
Content: no swearing, no spice, violence but not overly descriptive
💌 ”i thought death would taste bitter, but it was surprisingly sweet”
this book had me hooked right from the beginning! 😋 taryn's world gets shaken when she learns her father, who pretty much abandoned her all her life, was part of this secret royal government, the kavari. but, her father gets murdered, and taryn is dragged into a political mess, trying to figure out who committed the murder. revenge vibes, identity crisis, you name it 🤫
the political intrigue kept me on my toes, and taryn is such a cool character 🥴💘. i mean, she's complicated, impulsive, and kind of reckless, but that's what makes her interesting, you know? i tried to be a detective, guessing who killed her father, but plot twist after plot twist, i was wrong every time! 😭😂
the characters are well-written, and there's this bigger plot hinted at for future books that's got me curious 👀. taryn's growth is something to watch; she's fiery and faces the consequences head-on. i usually can't stand reckless characters, but she had me hooked 😵💫
vladimir too! 💁🏾♀️ he's a mystery so far, but you can tell he's dealing with some heavy and intriguing stuff. can't wait to know more about him in the next book 🫢
the world-building is good, not too much magic, and no romance – a shocker for me (an avid romance addict 😳), but it worked 🤷🏾♀️😂. however, there's this “damsel in distress” vibe i wasn't crazy about 🙃, and the pacing also got a bit wonky at times 😅. some scenes were epic (especially the fight scenes), but then the dialogue got too rushed. also, there’s lots of running, getting caught, and saving – got a bit repetitive towards the end 🥱
still, a fantastic start to the series, especially for a debut. harrill's got me hooked for more! 💘
”thank you netgalley, victory editing netgalley co-op, and the author for sending me a copy of this e-arc. opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.”

pre-read: i keep requesting arcs instead of tackling my tbr pile. 😭 but hey, guess who just got approved for a new arc! 😋🤷🏾♀️
The Blood Vier is truly a captivating and enchanting story that pulls you into a world full of secrets, danger, and fierce resilience. ✨💖 From the very first page, I was hooked by the mysterious atmosphere and the complex political intrigue that feels both dark and beautiful at the same time. 🏰🔮 Taryn’s character is so relatable—she’s been hurt, betrayed, and forced to question everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Her desire for freedom and her fierce independence really shine through, making her such an inspiring heroine to root for. 🌟💃
The story weaves a delicate balance between the haunting shadows of treachery and the delicate glow of hope and love. 💔🩸 The world-building is lush and immersive, with a crumbling diarchy that whispers secrets in every corner, and the stakes are sky-high—treason, death, and betrayal lurk behind every turn of the page. 📖🔥 I loved how the characters—especially the cocky prince and the despised healer—add layers of complexity and charm, making the story feel so rich and alive. Their interactions are full of tension, wit, and warmth, which keeps you guessing and eager for what’s next. 💫✨
What really touched me was how Taryn’s journey isn’t just about solving a murder; it’s about discovering her own strength and figuring out where her true loyalties lie. The way secrets unravel and truths come to light kept me on the edge of my seat, and I found myself rooting harder and harder for her to find her voice in a world that’s trying to silence her. 🌹🔪
This book is a beautiful blend of poetic prose, gripping mystery, and heart-pounding action. If you love stories where loyalty is tested, where love and betrayal collide, and where a heroine fights to carve her own destiny, The Blood Vier is an absolute must-read. It’s a shimmering, dark fairy-tale that leaves you breathless and longing for more. Highly recommend! 💕

You sold me on a mysterious man showing up. I smell enemies to lovers!
The Blood Vier by Christy R. Harrill is a YA fantasy novel about Taryn who wants nothing to do with the father who abandoned her.
I really liked the politics Harrill presents in this book. It was a lot more intense than you would find in most YA books, which was quite refreshing. But at the same time, the pacing and some of the characters were a little lack luster. I felt like the pace needed to slow down just a hair so I could fully understand what was happening. But at the same time, I felt like I didn't get to know any of the characters all that well due to it. Overall this was a great read and I can't wait to see what else Harrill has up their sleeve.
