The world of Gritt is dead—its inhabitants just haven't caught up yet.

For years, Ryan has saved money to leave. Sand sailors willing to cross the desert are expensive. A month more of work and she and her younger sister will kiss Gritt goodbye.

But their time is cut short. Ryan is an Imperial, and The Seeker has orders to stop her from leaving—and breathing.

If there’s one thing the people of Gritt are known for, it’s their ability to survive. Now Ryan needs this skill more than ever before. She must rely on her wits, tenacity, and a bit of luck to carry out the plan.

There’s no more time to wait. Ryan must get herself and those she cares about safely away from this hellish landscape.

thoroughly enjoyable

The story of young Ryan and her sister is one that blends all the best aspects of YA fantasy. Ryan is a determined protector, using her gifts without alerting those who wish her harm. The author builds a great world for the book without overloading the reader with a ton of background in the beginning. The story is told such that it shows Ryan’s passion for her found family and the pain over the family she has lost. Lots of little twists to keep you guessing. Can’t wait to read more from this author!

A great book from a budding author. I was fascinated with the world of Gritt and grew close to the characters. Some of the side characters especially popped off the page and I can't wait to see more of them as further books come out.

This was a strong entry to a series and had an interesting and unique setting. The characters were compelling and complex, although the primary antagonist's motivation left something to be desired and one attempted twist was all too clear to me. Nevertheless, there was still enough revealed throughout the story and kept hidden to me guessing and leave enough of a mystery that I wanted to keep going. The questions that were left unanswered at the end make me quite curious about, especially about the greater structure of the world. It was fascinating, and I hope to see more details about the history and the ins and outs of the story going forward. Most of the characters are very lifelike and complicated, with one or two questionable executions. Although there are a few trendy character traits and ones that I personally find overdone, generally, the characters were engaging, understandable, and felt sincere. The first third of the book was truly amazing, but I felt the remainder, while still quite enjoyable, was not quite as strong. Nevertheless, I am eager for the release of the next book. It has a curious and engaging plot that is a fresh take on this kind of story and the world building was well done.

Was such a fun read and an interesting story line. Good for adults that want a good clean story or young adults/teens. I am really looking forward to reading the next book! I enjoy Ryan’s character and the relationships she has through the book. The seeker is one of the most interesting and kinda creepy character and I feel like his story arch was created with a lot of thought. Again, excited to read the next book and get more of the Kings perspective of the creation of his dystopian kingdom he has created.
