Just like the previous volumes, this one is a wild ride once again. Diabetes, shingles, a fistula... Things really only seem to get worse for this body.
With that, I should put a trigger warning for suicide for this volume.
I enjoyed seeing the two cells we've been following from the start bonding with the cells they met in this new, 'darker'/unhealthier body. Tensions were high at times, but considering the situation I don't blame them. Everyone got along better at the end, which was great.
While I didn't enjoy this one as the last volume, I still think this series is solid and really makes me want to take care of my own body more.
RATING: 4.5/5 If you like Glycation, Fistula, and Acyclovir you may like Cells at Work! Code Black Vol 4
Trigger Warning: This work contains scenes of suicide
QUICK REVIEW Cells At Work! Code Black is another depressing, and scary volume and I can't get enough of it. Forget monsters and other horror themes, Diabetes, Anal Fistulas, and Shingles are 10x scarier and the artwork heightens that fear. This is another great volume and its fantastic to see the White Blood Cell and Red Blood Cell becoming more of a leader and further developing their character arcs. I just wish that we spent some time on other cells as they are exceptionally written and interesting. Still this is a great read and I recommend this.
REVIEW I took a break from Cells at Work! Code Black for a bit to catch up on the original Cells at Work! and man did I come back to a rough time. I forgot how depressing and sad Code Black is compared to the happy go lucky original. This time around we are focusing on Anal Fistulas, Diabetes, and Shingles. Honestly this volume in particular is scary, mostly because the story matches the science behind it and its much easier to grasp. We get a bit more character development here as well with the White Blood Cell becoming a leader and even the Red Blood Cell having a small fanbase. I do wish we focus more on the other cells to be more invested but the characters are likable enough that you do feel bad when they are hurt or sad.. I wouldn't say that this is my favourite volume but it is interesting and really want to read the rest of the series (hoping theres a happy ending).
Bad is bad, and this body is in a really bad state. And while the depiction of the individual conditions and symptoms is pretty fascinating at times. But at the same time, so much gloom and doom can get a little overwhelming, or at least it starts to feel like white noise (no pun intended). I know the story is going to go...somewhere. But it's taking a while to get there.
I don’t know if it was the best idea to read this during a pandemic (which may inspire another Cells at Work spin-off, let’s be honest), but the dystopian levels in this manga continue to accelerate. Underlying all of that is just the focus that you should try to maintain a healthy lifestyle: you don’t know how your body can be suffering internally.
This one was an important one to read, all about diabetes. My Dad has diabetes and I understood some of this, but the see how bad it could be for him was eye opening. You hear a lot about different stages and levels, so obviously his isn't to this degree, but it still interesting to learn about it; the cause and effect.
Gotta say, this volume is a pretty effective deterrent for not taking care of your diabetes (or developing it in the first place). Damn, this series hasn’t pulled any punches...
I don’t have the next volume downloaded and not enough internet bc of the storm to get it rn, sadly...
I am still impressed with how exciting this series makes the work of blood cells! While reading I learned quite a few things about various health conditions and bodily functions and definitely felt a bit shamed to be healthier.
I can't tell if this series is absolutely crazy or absolutely brilliant. This volume deals heavily with diabetes and all is affiliated illnesses and issues. Through in significant violence and this is one crazy science lesson.
The body is eating too much sugar and diabetes is setting in...including all of its problems. The toll on the pancreas, the impact on the blood cells, etc. Also, we see how some cells work and work even if their efforts aren't needed. Like hair or the prostate.
Also, problems in the rectum. And shingles! (I'm gonna get that, damn chicken pox). And more diabetes! Bad times for red blood cells, blocked vessels, and something really bad in the big toe.
And I need the next volume! But Kodansha isn't printing until September because of Covid-19! It's only digital and suffering!
