In English Bjuda translates roughly as whiteness, and this is the central theme of a multimedia exhibition which involved photos , installations, music and poetry readings (one of which I was lucky to attend). The book is only part of this extravaganza and yet, I felt it was an integral part.

For production and design fetishists, the Bjuda book is the ultimate dream: consisting of 37 poems in Maltese with an English translation on quality pamphlets, some transparencies, postcards, a poster and QR codes which link to a 27 minute album of post rock/ambient instrumentals all encased in a plastic box, this is a true labor of love which displays the talents of the three main people behind the project, Giola Cassar took the photos which adorn the postcards, pamphlets and poster , Leanne Ellul wrote most the poems (with some contributions from other local poets) and Kenneth Sacco provided the music.

The colour white may seem bland and dull but as Han Kang proved, there is depth, Bjuda further exemplifies this: All the poems themes are about life (Fine Foetal Skin) , death (To Fathom Death) and inner turmoil (The Atrophy of Wounds) and all feature white. Other objects that are white which get a mention are ice, milk, cream, spit, hair and paint.

Rarely has a book been so immersive. The poems, music and photos all compliment each other. A lot of the poems are intense so the other forms of media balance everything out. Obviously hearing the poems being read by the poets and seeing the photos blown up and displayed with music coming out of the speakers gives the project another dimension but the booklet stands on it's own as well.

Bażikament, dan il-ktieb huwa kaxxa. Biss, ta’ ġo fiha, jagħmel minn kollox biex joħroġ mill-konfini tagħha. U jirnexxielu. U kif.
