Like many young men, Ken Barlow dreamed of wearing the iconic Jerry West silhouette that emblazons NBA jerseys. Equipped with the skill set, size, athleticism and discipline, Ken was on a trajectory to accomplish his dream. From McDonald’s All American and University of Notre Dame graduate to an NBA first round draft pick, Ken Barlow was offered a guaranteed NBA contract. Yet, Ken vetoed his offer and took the path least chosen. He subsequently ventured on an amazing international career that led to numerous championships and leadership positions on and off the court.
Ultimately, First Round Pick is about more than basketball; it is about life choices and being positioned to make decisions that will propel one to success, even if doing so means going against the tide or what others desire. By outlining his journey in a transparent manner, Ken Barlow encourages his readers to be prepared, courageous and authentic in their personal pathways and career choices.
This book made me wish that I could have a "do-over" in raising my own children. The author was born into a family of pragmatic and faith filled individuals, each of whom instilled the necessary faith and values to navigate this world. Mr. Barlow describes the events that led to his chosen path, with amazing gratitude, even if most would call them set backs. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It was eye opening to say the least in regards to a gifted athlete/scholar being courted by college coaches to prospective agents and finally the stranglehold of the NBA. These pages show Ken Barlow to be a man of honor, faith and a solid familial foundation, not to mention, one heck of a basketball player. Such a good read!
I loved this book. Barlow's book is an honest, inspirational look at his successful long career as a basketball star who chooses the best path to honor himself and his family who insisted he always believe in his inherent self worth. Barlow is exceptional at living that life where he worked hard to have many options to success - whether it was those dictated by NBA scouts or corporate recruiters. A great guide for anyone struggling with society's narrow overblown expectations vs what will enrich you for the rest of your life.
