Love is a beautiful thing. Full of romance, joy, happiness…murder? What happens when love goes horribly, gruesomely wrong? A red wedding, a sacrifice to Saint Valentine, blind dates gone amiss…there are so many ways romance can be twisted. This anthology, with over 40 international authors, is not for the faint of heart.
Brandi Hicks was born and raised in West Virginia, where she still lives as a single mom with her two incredible children. She loves everything from dark and twisted to romance and supernatural.
Every year Valentine’s Day comes round and every year, I roll my eyes at it; simply put, I feel it has become far too commercialised. Having said this, I can still appreciate its true origin and history of how it all began. As for myself, Valentines is not something I have ever really been into, but it never goes unnoticed when walking past shop windows. This year something different stood out and caught my attention “Heartless”, with its great big bloody beating heart on the cover, that oozes and trickles down in the palm of two hands. Having a bit of a wicked sense of humour, the blurb had me at murder!
“Don’t you EVER break someone’s heart, because they only have one. Break their bones, they have 206 of those.” Jayy Von Monroe
This is my second time reading 100-word drabbles and I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying how extremely sharp and quick-witted they are and how they made me say, ooh that is good outload! This collection appealed to me far more than having to go on an actual date; no need to make conversation, or spending ages deciding what to wear, all l needed to focus on was my appetite for Heartless!
For my starter meal I discovered the way to a Man’s Heart by Dawn Debraal, this conjured up images of Mrs Lovett's pies. Further delights included jamming a kitchen knife between ribs and appreciating a succulent meat that is far more Tender by Scott McGregor. Also, how the heart of a stranger could be so much more flavourful than someone new, in fact Bloody Rare by Radar DeBoard. I was even tempted by the wafting aroma of Italian food, such Labors of Love by Birgit K. Gaiser. After all that delicious food it put me in the mood to go out for a stroll, but I made sure to watch out for any glowing Cats Eyes by C.M. Saunders; remembering to keep my wits about me, for the Ripper could be loose On the Cobblestones by Scarlett Lake. I still had room for dessert when l got back, I had a red velvet heart-shaped cake with the freshest of ingredients and it had the deepest colour of red, you could just tell it was Made With Love, Maybe by Renta Pavrey.
Love is about sacrifices but what lengths are we willing to go too? Is it far better to have experienced love and loss, or to have never loved at all? In the end all we want is Somebody to Love, or are we just doomed to fall In Love With a Monster? We give a person our heart and soul, yet it never seems to be enough, so why not just get Slaughtered by Nat Whiston. Or you might decide to keep your guard up when it comes to cupid and join Single’s Awareness Day by Dorian J. Sinnott instead.
