Rate this book
Richard Bell is an old, bitter man. He once had everything--money, a family, prestige, a place in the community--until he frittered it all away. Now, he knows it is too late to change things. At this point, it's pretty amazing how Shawn Inmon has written so many books with the same basic premise but with a number of really different perspectives. I found this one to be possibly the most introspective story so far. It was a really solid 5 star read up until 70% through. The last 30% wasn't paced as well (and I felt too much energy and too many pages were devoted to the treasure hunt), particularly at the very end when we are told (rather than shown) what happens in his last life (this issue has happened in a number of the books, but if he showed everything instead of summarizing, the books would be incredibly long). I liked the way the author chose to reveal what the MC's regrets were, especially the main regret with his brothers.

Having read all of the series, I can see the author's writing style evolving, and getting more sophisticated over time. I look forward to reading more.

Shawn does what only Shawn can do - surprise me at his lack of repetitiveness despite this being book 16. Richard Bell is a d*ck. Without spoiling anything, we meet Richard as a sad, old man. As the story develops, we learn that Richard has made all of his life's decisions based on what was in his best interest, and no one else's. Despite the omnipotence of getting a "do-over,” things still don't seem to work out very well for Richard. As the story progresses, we learn that Richard Bell has an unlucky horseshoe hanging over his head, much like a gray thunderstorm cloud that he can never escape. Shawn doesn't give us the 'big reveal' until we are maybe 80% through the book and we learn that Richard has not only made some terrible decisions in his life, but everyone of which was due to selfish reasons. Richard's do-over is much more penance than vindication, and it is a very insightful ride for the reader.

It's been a long time that I've read a Middle Falls novel. This is yet another beautiful novel. The storytelling is a little bit different here. Like few previous stories, it starts towards the end of the first life of Richard. But instead of it starting in early years of his life, it starts half way through. The story wades through each of the major regrets in Richards life as he tries fix them. We do not learn about the biggest regrets till his last couple of lives, although we do get inkling of them.
Now this happened. I read all the previous 15 Middle Falls novels some time ago and there was a big gap. I read few quite exiting stories and adventures. I thought about reading the next MF novel, and thought it might not be as exciting. Because we usually are going through the character's routine lives. The only difference being the non routine reincarnation. So I thought, that although it will be good to read this novel, it might not be as interesting. But boy, how wrong I was. And I started to realise within first hour of the reading. These stories are so well written that we do not loose interest. And this book is almost 9 hr long. I liked this new way of restarting the lives. Although I feel that sometime I miss the old ways in which he characters restart at the same time.
One thing that I feel that did not go as intended in this story is the twist with Brandy's character. Shawn Inmon said that he felt that she drew the short stick in Richard's all previous lives and needed something good to happen with her in the last life. But that sentiment never come out like. Brandy always comes out as a typical opportunist gold digger. We do not feel sympathetic towards her.
Anyways, I liked this story and may read it again sometime, although I won't call it one of the best MF stories, or one of the most interesting ones either. Those places are taken by Michael Holister, Dominick Davidner, Joe Hart, and Scott McKenzie. But yet, the series still continues maintain the charm even after 16 novels. That's something!
Brandy again.
Overall okay.
Reconsider rating here.
---------------Second Reading Review----------------------
Different restart points works better in this story. One regret at a time.
Screwed up dates/age, Artie's establishment year (Shawn says he starts writing with only concept in mind, other things and people 'arrive', he also says how he love accidents happen this way. Free my mind and start living the character's life, calls himself a Discovery writer. The series has a few advantages that I plan to continue to exploit. One of those advantages is that I can evolve the rules of the universe as we move forward. )
Real treasure hunt. Why not band of MF TT treasure hunters. :)

The little series that could enters Book 16.

While any book in the series could on paper be read independently, I’ve read right along (and am planning my first re-read of the series next year!) and would like to touch on something not specific to this book but to Middle Falls as a whole. What Mr. Inmon does so seamlessly with his writing is take, in this case, 331 pages, and make it stretch into multiple lifetimes, but make me feel like I’m living it in real time. He’ll slow time to crawl. In this case, there’s a home remodel project. We’re literally helping load the lumber into the truck, calling vendors, and helping make snacks for the workers. He knows how to do the “years passed quickly…” thing when he needs to, but in a short book about multiple lifetimes, the author takes just enough time to make each memorable and accessible.

This is the story of Richard Bell, and told deep enough into the Middle Falls series each lifetime is unique, begun at different intersection points, with surprises unveiled only as the onion is peeled back. Richard is not the most lovable narrator starting out, nor in fairness the least, but his journey is meaningful, and without spoilers, messy as it is human.

Bring on #17.

Brathella, what are you doing? I agree with you that this watcher is not gaining any brownie points with me............but, alas, she has method in her madness. I was getting very upset when she kept Richard in almost a year of Groundhog day. This was really an interesting read, as Richard did progress and get just where he was supposed to be. One upstanding, loving, giving individual that got to undo all that went wrong in his first life. Gotta love Middle Falls for it's ability to let you do just that, make right what once went wrong. Misjudged the song played this time, can't get them all right. Looking forward to #17, please Shawn, keep Middle Falls alive and well. I really love getting down and can't stop reading the adventures of all it's residents. Alex Hawk is another treat also, you just have a great knack with time travel that just stands out for me, and I know you have other readers that feel the same way I do. Well done, Brathella, you won me over in the end.

Richard goes to his [best] friend's funeral goes back to the old folks home, which holds nothing for him but more misery, and dies the next morning. Then he wakes up back in 1982 on the day he ran away with his mistress who after marrying him, quickly got tired of him and divorced him. Well he's going to break it off this time. That life doesn't go well, nor having to relive George's funeral in his original timeline a hundred times. Another shot at 1982 before going back to 1972. That's when his mother got so bad off with dementia, it was either he take her in or the rest home, where in his original life she managed to live a miserable year before taking her own life.

Yes, there is a lot that Richard has done to regret. And he has to relive the highlights. He keeps working with what he's been given.

Another fine MFTT story. 4.7 stars.

I've really enjoyed the premise of this Middle Falls series ... love the "what if" possibilities of different choices. The first several books were included in KindleUnlimited with text and audio. The later books just the Kindle copy, audio available but needed to be added on for a fee. I went ahead and bought several of the later installments during some Audible sales.

While I liked this one in the end, I struggled at the start somewhat. The MC just isn't a very likeable character, the choices he makes aren't great, even given multiple attempts. Some really tough situations, with his wife, his mother, his brother ...

It was a bit frustrating for me, to have "an event" in his early life alluded to, but we're not told what happened until much later in the book. Something with his brother(s) ... there were three boy, not just two, one is missing his arms and has served a prison sentence for manslaughter. FINALLY, it's addressed, but not until 3/4 of the way through the book.

In the first several/many Middle Falls, our characters are "reset" to a certain time in their life. Always the same spot. At some point (book 12 or so?) the workers at the Universal Life Center start getting a little more flexible/creative in switching up the "restart" point. In some ways, this is a bit of a cop out ... these characters can't get it "right" until they go back far enough or to a certain point to change a specific event that was the "lifechanging" thing. The MC here is flopped all around, back to his middle age, then back to right before his death, then further back, further back (until that "unexplained event" with his brothers that has been alluded to but never explained).

Here, like some of the other books, the MC has to grapple with marrying a woman just to get his children (will everything be the same, will they be the same kids?). Having been estranged from his family for 20+ years, will he now step up and take care of his aging mother (who killed herself after being put in a home in the "original life"). In a couple scenarios, the MC is able to take advantage of knowledge (Microsoft will do well, buy stock ...) but when reset further back?

Some SPOILERS ... I thought the whole "treasure hunt" thing was a bit off the rails, and the first experience (did he kill those two guys, yes, somewhat self-defense, but was that never investigated, did he get off scott-free? Hadn't he only taken a small portion that first time, was that enough?) Then learning to work with gold as a way to "clean" it in another life ... it was all over the top. Really? Did our character LEARN a lot (yes, some) and improve, or did he just prevent a bad accident that had impacted everyone, and get rich, and in that one FINALLY get things right? When life was going smoothly and he had oodles of money, yeah, life is good.

The whole Brandi (mistress in the original life and first redo) ends up marrying his son in the final life? Really? And ALL THE ARTIE'S references. Was there NO OTHER PLACE TO EAT? I was so sick of Artie's. I'm pretty sure the owners of Artie's were in a previous story, but it was too much.

While I've enjoyed this series, I think maybe I'm at a stopping point ... at least if I have to buy the books. If they (17+) are in KU with audio, maybe I'll try jumping back in.

Peel back the layers to find…

Participating in Richard Bell’s journey is like peeling back layers of an artichoke to get to the sweet meat of it.

In many ways, Richard is a product of his times, mindlessly fulfilling the ‘man’s role’ and feeling wholly unfulfilled by it. It’s that sense of disconnect with our true selves combined with the sense of being unfulfilled that can lead us to make some horribly wrong choices for ourselves. That’s certainly the case with Richard Bell.

His soul travel loops take him from being oblivious about harboring any regrets… to being aware and denying them… to wondering what he can do to rectify his past mistakes… to being ready to fully take charge of his redo in big and meaningful ways.

Add in that his Watcher isn’t consistent in his soul time travel loops’ entry points. This provides its own set of challenges.

Throughout, we learn a little bit more about Richard Bell, what makes him tick, and what caused the downward spiral in the first place. This is a lovely story about what good can happen when we learn the value of serving others as well as ourselves.

Disclosure: I downloaded this book for free, have purchased four previous books by the author, and am posting an honest review of this work.

I loved the earlier novels in this time-travel series, and Richard Bell is among his best. Bell is a sad, dying elderly man, who regrets how his marriage, fatherhood, job, and family life has gone. So he relives his life hundreds of times, learning lessons about relationships, friendship, redemption, and love along the way.

One caveat: Bell is ostracized from his family, but we don't find out until the later chapters of the book. It's a bit frustrating, but Inmon is "hiding the ball" (as he notes in the afterword). I don't really see why this is necessary.

Other than that, the book is terrific! I loved the two treasure hunts and the "Peggy Sue" moment when Bell reconnects with his divorced wife is well done!

The book takes a day or so to read. It moves along swiftly, as do most of Inmon's books. Another winner!

It took me a while to warm up to Richard Bell. We meet him at the end of a rather horrible life, a bitter man full of regret. Then we get to watch him repeat it over and over a few times and it made him difficult to empathize with.

Inmon brought it around, though, as he always does.

Yeah, these books ARE formulaic, but it's the formula that makes such a great framework for the incredible character study stories. Inmon uses this series to explore humanity in all it's glory, warts and all, and it's just so damned relatable.

Good stuff, this. I'm not sure why some studio exec hasn't optioned this series yet. It's perfect for TV. The kind that could have different characters/actors for every episode with some recurring characters to maintain the "small town feel" and the writers could go nuts with this formula. So much potential.

As usual Shawn Inmon delivers a really good story in the Middle Falls time travel series. Its starting to get to the point where middle falls is just jam packed with people who have had multiple lives. I guess they do not necessarily need to have their 2nd and on lives overlap. But he works with Charles Waters and has multiple overlapping people from the earlier book with no hint that the others are in their multiple lives and that they notice something different about his reactions. I understand why of course but I think it would be good if they did not constantly interact with people from earlier books. Unless I need to go back and re-read the earlier books and they interacted with Richard Bell and others, that would be quite the Easter eggs!

A gripping, fast-paced and fascinating book
The 16th book in the Middle Falls time travel series by Shawn Inmon and these books just get better and better! We first meet Richard Bell as an embittered old man in an old people’s home, and his life seems to be over. The author has a deceptively clever way of drawing you in and making you want to turn the pages as fast as you can to find out what happens to Richard Bell as he is transported back in time. Can he make amends for his ways, start over and make a better job of his life? A gripping and thrilling time travel novel - highly recommended.

This is yet another book to add to the wonderful Middle Falls series. In any other series I would have got bored of the repetitiveness by now but this will never happen with Shawn's books as only the frame of the story is repetitive. Every book has a completely different storyline and can be read as standalone, so out of sequence if needed.
Richard is a loveable character and this book really kept me on my toes throughout, unable to see where the character would be taken next, causing me to find it difficult to put down.

Another hit!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Richard was a selfish somewhat dry person and ended up dying alone. It made me sad that he and Debbie just couldn’t make their marriage work until Richard’s last life. I’m so glad he went to the dance where he met her in his first life knowing they divorced repeatedly. I don’t know if I’d have the strength to do that. But I suppose just to make sure you had your kids, it is always worth the risk. I’m sad that he Debbie wasn’t mentioned when he reached “Heaven”. Recommend this and all the Middle Falls books.

I realize that the author was playing around with what he referred to in the author's note as hiding the ball but I think that it could've been done better. It was a bit heavy-handed to just drop a reference to (say) his brother hating him, or his mom kicking him out of the family. The way that it came across had me re-scanning the book to that point to make sure that I hadn't overlooked something.

After all the other books in this series, I actually started to think about what it means to live a good live when I read this book. Characters were solid and the plot moved along nicely. My only regret about about this book is the number of chapters spent on one major activity. But this doesn’t stop me from loving this book. Read it!

Just by glancing at this photo cover gives me a negative reaction. ( We are all not that cute or handsome in our retirement years). Please read everything you can by Shawn Inmon-all are filled with human emotions. Richard Bell woke up in time to give his family hugs and kisses! He cared everywhere!
It is never too late in life to smile when you are out there walking amongst strangers.

Shawn Inmon is such a talented writer that he can take the same setting and basic premise and make it into many, many very diversified stories. By its title, I thought this one would be depressing, but it was anything but that as the story progressed. I really hope this author keeps on writing these Middle Falls stories and never runs out of ideas to keep it fresh!

I greatly enjoyed this one though the pace was slow. I never really liked Richard and felt horrible for his children that were more of an afterthought throughout this entire book. But that's the mark of a good author, he got me feeling like his characters were real.

Looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Richard Bell's story was nicely written. This one is in my top 5 favorite Middle Falls books. Richard's story tackles the subject of regret. What was also interesting is that throughout the story, we find that Richard's recollection and narrative isn't very accurate, which makes us think about our own narrative biases.

A return to form after the slight disappointment of The Encore Lives of Effie Anderson. Shawn Inmon on top form here as we eventually find out what Richard Bell's major regret was, after a trip through some of his other regrets. Does it all work out in the end? Not telling!
