The Cocktail Series #3

Risks and Whiskey

Rate this book
**Friends to lovers only works in romance novels, fairy tales, and Hollywood…right?**

Wesley is a master at hiding his emotions. His upbringing certainly made sure of that. So, burying his unrequited feelings for his best friend and co-star, Olivia, under a cocky, flirty façade is easy. Who needs love, anyway? Not him.

That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Olivia is tired of feeling like an extra in her own life. As if being dumped by her boyfriend (who just happens to be her TV show’s creator) isn’t bad enough, now her entire romantic history has become tabloid fodder. Even her friendship with Wesley is being called into question.

Is this what romance rock-bottom feels like?

When Wesley is there for Olivia like no one else, their banter starts to fuel a deeper desire…and sexy late-night confessions bring them closer than they’ve ever been.

But is the risk of another potential romantic disaster more than Olivia—and her career—can survive?

The story
Olivia is a 25 year old actress in a YA fantasy show that has huge success. When the press outs her relationship with the 40-something director, she isn’t prepared for the fallout. She was hoping it would be good for their relationship, but he drops her and the producers drop him. Her co-star Wes has been in love with Olivia for the last six years since they met at acting school in LA. But he has kept his feelings well hidden behind a playboy persona. Both Liv and Wes have personal demons to deal with. She has lost her mother to cancer and he grew up with wealthy but cold parents. Will either be able to admit their true feelings for each other?

My thoughts
I read a previous book in this series (Sex & Sours) last year, and it stood out then for its honest portrayal of feelings, backed by some healthy spice. The emotional content of this story felt stronger to me, and it was less about the spice (which is definitely still there). I loved how, bit by bit, Liv and Wes were able to open up about their feelings for each other, think over things the other stood up for, and always advocated for each other. It’s a lovely read - I highly recommend! ❤️

This is the writing by Dani McLean that I missed in the second book of the series. I'm glad she stepped it up for this 3rd installment. The chemistry between the characters was back and hot. I really enjoyed the back stories of both Wes and Liv. I also liked the visits from the main characters from the past 2 books of the series. There did appear to be some continuity errors, but maybe I overlooked something because I read the book so quickly. I just couldn't put it down, even though I knew there would be a HEA ending. I had to see how it all played out. The only thing I would have added is more Whiskey and maybe some Whiskey drink recipes to go along with the theme of the book, but since neither of the main characters were involved in drink or bar industry, it wasn't odd that this was missing.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for the ARC!

Disclaimer: I have not read the first two in this series: Love & Rum & Sex & Sours.

What a delight this was. I went into this with no expectations except to enjoy a cute lil romcom.
It did not disappoint! I love books with actors/actresses in a fantasy tv series for some reason (I miss GoT, okay?). This was really sweet, but still spicy, with a hell of a slow burn. I could really feel Liz and Wes' connection. The author dealt with emotional issues (family trauma/family death) in a delicate and appropriate way. I may have shed a tear or two. Neither characters' issues overwhelmed them in a way that it took away from their story. I am a cynic, so naturally I was waiting for the third act miscommunication, but it never happened! I could not be happier about that. (WE HATE A MISCOMMUNCATION IN THE THIRD ACT!!!). They both persevered and dealt with their issues in the end, which I wholeheartedly appreciate. I will definitely be picking up the first two in this series ASAP. I wish I would have read the others in the series before this one, so I could have understood the nuances of the already established characters—but it did not take away from my reading experience overall.

Anyways, highly recommend if you're looking for a sweet and spicy contemporary romance!

A slow burn romance with all the feels.

You've got to love a man whose fav movie is The Princess Bride, who'll binge watch 90's movies with you, and bring you got chocolate with extra marshmallows when your life falls apart. That's Wes. It's a shame Liv can't see that he's madly in love with her. It's a shame Wes doesn't know Liv has had a crush on him forever, but thinks she's firmly in the friend zone. It all makes for a slow burn that has you turning the page in anticipation of the moment they finally figure it out. I railed at the unfairness of life in the spotlight, where careers can be ruined if you fall for the wrong person. Where people use you to their own advantage. I face palmed when Wes let his past hurts interfere with his chance at happiness. I cheered when Liv stood up for what she wanted. And the happy ever after ending made the journey worthwhile.
I also loved the cameos of characters from the first two books in the series and the trip down movie memory lane.

When I say I couldn't put this book down, I mean I read it in one sitting; it's that good. I'm now going to have to backtrack and read the two other books in this series because I am stunned. The dual POV was perfection, the character development was lovely, and our leading man was everything. Liv had me frustrated from time to time, but I loved her tenacity and when she finally came into her own as the leading lady in her life. The tension and frustration of so many almost moments had me wanting to toss my kindle across the room, but unable to part with it because I desperately needed to keep reading. My first thought when I saw the male lead's name was of The Princess Bride, a happy coincidence or kismet, maybe, and I'm happy to say this was a perfect "kissing book."

Another great installment from Dani. She is the queen of a slow burn and building that serial tension until it is ready to explode!

I absolutely adore Wes. He may have grown up privileged but he has the same basic needs and wants as everyone else and suffers from the lack of it.

Watching these two FINALLY come together and over come the obstacles thrown at them was sweet. Don't let Wes' soft heart fool you though. He knows how to burn up the sheets!

Risks and Whiskey was a great addition to the series. The little sneak peak of previous MCs was neat, and watching Wes and Liv's story blossom was wonderful! There was really incredible chemistry between the characters, and I was wholly invested in seeing how they evolved from start to finish.

Plot

Wesley is the guy who always fakes his feelings for others to be happy, due to his family and how he was raised. That is why he has no problem hiding his true feelings of love for his best friend and co-actor, Olivia and he gets it away with meaningless flirting.
Olivia is tired of being a side character always, her ex boyfriend whom dumped her after they were found out made it a lot worst and her life became transparent for the world to critique. Due to this, Wes and her friendship starts to sink due to the tension.
Their friendship picks up speed and spice the more Wes spends time with Olivia. They talk for hours throughout the night and they have seductive banter which puts them both onto the same spot. Would this hot and passionate romance impact Olivia and her career?

Thoughts

This is my first book from the author and in the series. This book had the trope of friend/best friends to lovers and I thought the build-up to establish that was quite good because it showed the time needed to full trust one another. Liv and Wes were more honest and open with their feelings over time. I liked how Wes was protective of Olivia and Olivia reciprocated by caring for Wes. The dual POV also made it easier to understand the MC's feelings.
My only dislike for this book was that it was too long so it may make readers skim through instead of reading. The background stories or other characters also felt a little redundant because the focus was taken off from the MCs at times. Overall, an easy and light read.

It seems that Wesley has loved Olivia for the past six years but has had to accept that she might just simply be a friend. When her relationship with her producer, making the tabloid news and not in a good way, she feels that the only one who understands her is Wesley. When her publicist suggests she should keep a low profile, Olivia decides to take Wesley up on his offer to stay with him in LA, whilst he attends his parents’ wedding anniversary. Yet as they spend time together, Wesley finds it more and more difficult to be just the friend, whilst Olivia begins to feel that maybe there is something more between them, especially when she finds there is no-one else she would rather be with.
I was hooked from the first page, with Wes revealing his feelings at the start but soon realising the situation he was facing when he catches Olivia with the producer. The dual POV was another great facet to the book, where the angst and frustration felt by the two characters is almost a mirror image. I loved the fact that both had such strong feelings for the other but were fearful of losing a friendship. I found Wes to be such a romantic and honourable character, always thinking of Liv before his own intense feelings. Seeing Liv grow in confidence as a consequence of their friendship and romance, was rewarding. Having just finished this book, this will be one that I will definitely reread in the near future. Not having read any of the two previous books, I am so excited to now have a new author to follow.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Discovering Love . . .

Olivia is an actress in a successful fantasy show. She has been having a secret relationship with the director, Bryson Green, when photos are taken by the press and made public. Bryson had a fit, knowing his career was ruined, so he dumped her. Her co-star, Wesley, has kept up their friendship with her for 6 years, wanting more but not pursuing it. His own upbringing let him pretend a flirty persona that hid his real feelings. Will this incident let them become more than just friends as he stands beside her and supports her through the worst of the ordeal? Or will Olivia fear exposure of another romance will end her career permanently?

The story is well-written, told from both characters’ points of view which gives us a complete picture of everyone’s reactions. Grab your copy and see if romance is in their future.

Steamy timeless trope – 3.75 stars
After reading the author’s last book I couldn’t wait for this one. I must say I was a little disappointed. I found a few things irritating. Even in the published book, there were several inconsistencies and a timeline that was off or was it just the ages? The story was good but it took so long for the couple to admit their feelings for one another. I think their reluctance to ruin a great friendship was admirable but it took too long for their first real kiss!
Wes and Olivia star in a TV series where he plays the god Ares and she plays a witch named Meres. The plot requires them to have feelings for each other. In reality, they have enjoyed a very close and satisfying friendship for all the years of the show’s airing. Wes has secretly had a crush on Liv this whole time and lately Liv has had more than friendship feelings toward Wes but neither will voice those feelings. A snafu brings everything to a head. Wes has had a homelife that is totally opposite from Liv’s which colors his desire to admit his attraction. Lots of complications before they get their HEA.
This was a humorous, sweet story but it just took too long to get where it needed to go. The writing was good, obviously the editing could have been better, and the ending saved it; beautiful ending. The book cover is a perfect depiction of the descriptions of Wes and Liv. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens.

I really loved Wes and Liv. Both had background baggage that propelled the story along. Hers was her long time agent and his was his brother, Lucas.

It showed a side of the movie Industry but wasn't that big a part.
I liked how everyone grew in their knowledge of themselves after confronting their fears.

I was troubled reading about the "fluid" agent person. I don't think it makes the book anything but dated and off in years to come. That was a good character despite she being a "them"

Risks and Whiskey
by Dani McLean
Pub Date: 24 Mar 2022

Wes and Liv are actors on a hugely popular tv series. He’s been silently crushing on her for six years. Obviously, Wes knows how to be patient. Liv on the other hand can’t wait. Sparks fly between the two on this sizzling friends-to-lovers slow burn romance.

I’ve never read a book by Dani McLean and now I wonder why. Loved Wes. Liz started out sounding immature, or was it just young? I really liked seeing her grow and take ownership of her future. This was such an enjoyable read! I look forward to catching up on Dani McLean’s previously released books.

This is my third Dani McClean book and the third in her Cocktail Series. Actors Wes and Olivia really come into their own, here. McClean builds a tangible sexual tension between them, the longing and lust that has been an underlying factor in their relationship for six years finally bubbling to the surface. Both need to overcome their hang-ups over their past to come together and stay together. A well-written character-driven story.

OMG. Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. This book is a slow burn, friends to lovers that simmers until it boils over. It's about Wes and Olivia, two co-stars who happen to be into each other but too afraid to admit it. When the tension breaks its sheer perfection and I can't praise this enough. It's sweet and cute. It's on the lighter side of romance.

Like whiskey, this series is smooth with a nice burn. Third in the series we get to know Wes and Liv in this installment. Stars of a fantasy TV series, Wes and Liv have always been in love with each other but neither has acted upon their feelings. When Liv's career looks like it is about to implode thanks to photos of her with her boss that she made sure were leaked, she looks to Wes to help her sort things out.

Enough sizzle to keep me reading and great character development.

The book centers on the relationship of Olivia and Wesley, two actors of a fantasy tv series. Right from the beginning you get a sense that these two characters are best-friends but Wesley is hip-dip in the friend-zone... After the revelation of Olivia's secret relationship to the show's producer, her world comes crumbling down but, as always, Wes comes to the rescue, a knight in shinning armor bearing hot chocolate with extra marshmallows! I absolutely devoured this book; it is really well written and the build up to their involvement is absolute perfection! In many books, you have the story told from one point of view, the main character's; I love the constant back and forth between Wes and Liv's points of view... I found it very refreshing. If there was one book I would like to forget just so I could read it again, this would be a top contender!

Trigger Warnings include:
references to parental death (cancer), and parental neglect.

A friends to lovers with great communication?! How did I get so lucky!? I felt Liv and Wes’s magnetic pull from the start. I was so excited to see how long it would take them before they didn't have a choice but to give in to it. Some forced proximity sure did the trick! Liv and Wes have been friends and working side by side for years. And in that time, they create such a beautiful bond that is unbreakable. We see it tested! But it never falters. I love how playful and carefree they are with each other. Their characters are in love, they're in love, and everything’s a secret. I couldn’t handle how wonderful it was! Wes’s witty humor brought me to tears; I loved it so much! And his gentle heart and unimaginable love for Liv…oh be still my heart! (I missed Tiff and I all but screamed when she squeezed her way in) The way Wes talked and thought about Liv, I got a crush on her! All those years kissing each other on camera, Wes has never slipped. All those nights with Liv’s cute ‘sit-wiggle-sigh’, he still never slipped. Just a couple days locked up together in his LA home…he’s hit his limit! Communication, communication, communication! About what they want out of life, their careers, their futures, their friendship, how they truly feel about each other. But no matter what, Liv achieving her dreams was what was most important to Wes, no matter what that cost him. As someone who was a teenager through the One Tree Hill years and the terrible things that have come out since about our favorite WB teen dramas, and getting to watch Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams fall in love on screen…I love this story SO much!

My Favorite Quotes:

• “I’m with the sexiest woman on earth. What could I possibly complain about?”
• “I’ve always liked you.”
• “You changed my life.”
• “It’s only for you.”
• “The way I want to kiss you isn’t rated for general audiences.”
• “You’re not some itch I need to scratch.”
• “If you keep looking at me like that, I can’t be held responsible for me actions.”
• “I think you need something wet.”

'Risks and Whiskey' - the third in Dani McLean's cocktail series - is a slow burn friends-to-lovers story set in the background of showbusiness.

Wes has been in love with his best friend and co-star Liv after meeting her at university. Liv, meanwhile has had a two year secret romance with their showrunner, which, after paparazzi out them, ends with Liv dumped.

Unfortunately it is too slow-burn, I felt the starting chapters were way too slow with unncessary things that could've moved the story along faster, while still retaining that slow burn.

Also the author could've done more research about Hollywood works.

While I liked that the showrunner was fired for his relationship with Liv, I found it completely unrealistic. (But I'm happy for this plot development!)

Also if anything, a romance between two much loved co-stars would not have made them unpopular with the producers of the show, if anything there are far more fake relationships between co-stars for publicity. I would've preferred if this was more the machinations of Jen, Liv's controlling manager Jen.

And speaking of Jen. In Hollywood, a manager cannot negotiate deals, only an agent can. So her manager wouldn't have been able to sign those brand deals on her behalf.

Also, why was Wes unrepresented to sign his contract without his agent present or his agent and legal team looking over it first? Liv had her manager there! Also its unclear if the new manager Wes recommended to Liv was also his manager. I realise this is fiction and sometimes you need to cut out details, but it should've been more authentic.

The other error I found is Wes met Liv at 'film school' but its implied they were doing acting classes together (and yeah you can take electives but which is it? Film school is filmmaking. Yes these little details matter if you're going to put them in!)

Refreshingly though this book was miscommunication free. The third act seperation was done in a much more authentic way. I also enjoyed the empotional growth both Liv and Wes had to deal with, and how they both are a soruce of strength for each other to deal with it - Liv grieving her mum, and Wes dealing with neglectful, rich parents and his brother who cut him off. I think this was the best bits out of the book.

Overall this book could've been better at its pacing and Hollywood authenticity. However I intend to read the earlier books in this series, particularly the one with Wes and Liv's co-star Jackson.

Risks and Whiskey by Dani McLean
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

Olivia (Liv) and Wesley (Wes) are costars and love interests on a popular family-friendly action show. Though the two aren’t romantically involved outside of the show, Wes has nursed a huge crush on Liv since their first encounter years ago. Afraid to admit how he feels due to a rough upbringing, Wes continues to bury his feelings until Liv takes a risk and brings their romantic relationship off-screen. Will the relationship last? Or will Wes’s inability to open up, and Liv’s codependency on her manager cause their IRL love connection to fizzle out?

I thought this book was a fun, quick read! I liked the character building, and I loved how our leads were able to accept and improve on their shortcomings by the end of the book. It was a little bit of a slow burn, but really picked up towards the end. Unfortunately, the beginning of the book was a bit confusing to me so it took me a little bit to get into it, and there were some timeline issues that confused me a bit. I did read this pretty quickly though, so it could’ve just been because I was reading quickly and missed something.

What I liked:
❣️cute romance
❣️fun concept (love the actors to lovers pipeline)
❣️love that the series is cocktail themed

Could’ve been better:
❤️‍🩹bit confusing in the beginning
❤️‍🩹would’ve loved to see more of Wes and Lucas rebuilding their relationship!

Risk and Whiskey is the third book in the serie and focuses on the relationship between Wesley and Liv two minor characters in the previous books.
.
Both are actors in a television series playing Ares and a sorceress, and for six years they were just friends and for six years Wes hid what he felt and dedicated himself to being by her side as a friend. But when Liv faces press scrutiny for a relationship with a co-worker and their relationship abruptly ends, putting the future of her career on the line, Wes is the one who stands by her side and helps her regain her confidence.
.
Wes becomes essential to her and following him everywhere she realizes that her feelings are more than just of a great friendship.
.
Another book by Dani McLean is another memorable slow burn romance
.
Her characters are so full of color and depth that some of them always stays in my head a bit longer. They both have painful pasts, childhood neglect and the loss of a parent are difficult topics but my heart was completely won over by Wes, the heartbreak and loneliness he felt became more palpable to me. I have a kind of love hate with unrequited love and my heart always goes with the character waiting to be loved
.
A must read if you like slow burn romances, friends to lovers, same work place romance, actors and stage background and all time movie references with a twist of whiskey
.
.
.
Thanks to Dani Mclean and Victory editing for give me this beautiful book in exchange for my honest opinion I really enjoyed reading it

This book had some nice slow-burn vibes, and I really liked it! I started this series at book 2, and was underwhelmed, but this book is so much better. It helped for me that Wes and Liv are in deep so early in the story, as opposed to Book 2 where the leads were practically romantically ambivalent to one another for most of the book.

Liv and Wes are co-stars on a popular WB type fantasy show (I think the author was describing more of a Game of Thrones type show, but all I could imagine was Supernatural and Wes was giving me full Sam & Dean vibes, which I’m very into), and while Liv is dating the show’s director, Wes has spent 6 years in unrequited love/best friend land. When Liv’s relationship blows up in the media and the director calls things off, Liv turns to her best friend for support. But wait…Liv has always secretly had a crush on Wes too? Cue the angst and all the feels. I always enjoy Hollywood romances, and the media scrutiny and Executive machinations kept the story interesting.

This book.. be still my beating heart. 😍😍

The book follows Wesley who always fakes his feelings and always makes sure that others are happy. He has no problems hiding his feelings towards his best friend and co-actor Olivia. Olivia was recently dumped by her boyfriend and her show’s creator. Suddenly, her entire romantic life is being critiqued by the tabloids. As a result, her friendship with Wes starts to suffer due to the tension.

However, when Wes is there for Liv in a way that no one else is, they both start to feel the deeper desire that Wes has always felt. But if Liv has another romantic disaster, her friendship with Wes and her career may not be able to survive. 🔥🔥

Everything about this book was great! From the POVs to the storylines progression to the character's development (both Liv and Wes), and especially Wes. Oh, Wes, you are a beautiful man. While Liv had me wanting to throw my Kindle at times, I understood why she was the way she was, and I enjoyed how tenacious she was.

If you enjoy a slow burn, best friends romance, I recommend Risks and Whiskey by Dani McLean! ❤❤

In ‘Risks & Whiskey’ we meet Wesley and Olivia, both actors in a tv-series. Wesley has had feeling for Olivia for a long time, but he has always known that Olivia didn’t think of him that way. And the last few years, Wesley had to watch Olivia with her ‘secret’ boyfriend. So when things end badly, he does his best to be there for her.

I must admit this book wasn’t for me. I loved the sound of this story, and the whole idea still sounds pretty great. But unfortunately the characters just didn’t work for me. I couldn’t really feel the chemistry between Wesley and Olivia, and although I liked their friendship I just couldn’t really feel their romance. And Olivia’s character just frustrated me a lot to be honest.

I also thought this book could have moved a bit faster. At times it just went a bit slow, and there was just a lot of ‘side’ info I could have done without.

But to conclude, the writing by Dani McLean was good, and I can definitely see myself reading another one of her books. Overall a fun and easy read, but just not one for me.

I was not as thrilled with this book as I was with Sex and Sours, the second book in this spin-off series. Perhaps it's because I enjoy the enemies to lovers trope far more than I do the friends to lovers. The pacing doesn't feel that draggy because of the mounting tension. And even though this book presented it's own host of tension and anticipation, it fell a little flat for me. It was a tad too boring and felt a little aimless in terms of plot.

I did like Wes and Liv's dynamic, their friendship was sweet and I loved how eventually Liz grew a backbone. The writing wasn't too bad and compared to most stories, this wasn't terrible. It just didn't amaze me. Quite frankly, all it made me want to do is read Sex and Sours again. It was a decent enough friends to lovers story and if you're into that kind of thing, you'd probably enjoy it.

A big thanks to booksirens for this gifted arc in exchange for a honest review.

This was a first time read for me by Ms McLean and it certainly won't be my last. It is the third book of the series and after reading this, I am interested in going back and reading the first two. Wes and Liv were great characters and I enjoyed getting to know them, especially Wes, who I felt really bad for having to hide his true feelings for Liv behind a mask of cockiness. Both have had some personal issues from their past that doesn't necessarily make them open to love, but when Wes is there for Liv when she really needs him, their friendship begins to deepen and they grow closer. Their chemistry was amazing and it was heartwarming to see them start to open up more to each other and trust each other more. This was a lovely story that really gave me all the feels and you can be certain I will be looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Note - I received a digital arc of this book for free ; a courtesy of Book Sirens on the basis of which this review has been posted voluntarily. This is an honest opinion of mine.

Rating - 5 stars

Disclaimer - This book contains strong language, explicit sex scenes, references to parental death (Cancer) and parental neglect.

Before I elaborate further, I would really like to thank Book Sirens for a chance to review this book and author Dani Mclean for penning down such an amazing story.

So first stop - if you haven't read the first two books in The cocktail series - Love and Rum & Sex and Sours, I would suggest all potential readers to do that. Yes this book can be read as a standalone, but it might give a better orientation of character growth and context, if the previous two books are read.

Moving on, if you have read my reviews about Love and rum or Sex and Sours, you would all know that I was already hooked to the series since the first title !! So it isn't a big surprise that I actually decided to read the third book in the series. For those who haven't read, Love and Rum features protagonists senior regional sales manager Audrey Adams and rising TV star Jackson Wards who get set up in a one - night stand arranged by Audrey's closest friend Tiffany which ends up becoming something more and real for the duo while Sex and Sours stared Tiffany in the centric role as she pilots her way through a turbulent atmosphere called life ; being conflicted between her goals for life and relationships - both personal and professional.

And Risks and Whiskey was all about Wesley and Olivia - costars of Jackson who turn from friends to lovers in this story.

One word to describe the book - AMAZING !!!!

Between the first two books, Audrey and Jackson was my favourite couple but now Olivia and Wesley has joined the position too !! I absolutely loved the character growth and how the emotional sentiments of the characters were expressed across the story. The story takes off a couple of months post Love and Rum and Sex and Sours where in we see the dynamics of Wesley and Olivia. Wesley has always been in love with Olivia since the time they first met at acting school but never expressed it to her for fear of loosing her friendship . And Olivia has always appreciated Wes for always being there for her whenever she needed it the most. To add drama to this sweet lovestory , we have dramatic family confrontation and sensational Hollywood gossips complicating the scene for them. So how they navigate this mess and confess is what the story is all about.

I must have mentioned this in my previous reviews also but this is one series that I would love see it turn into a Netflix romedy film. The characters are absolutely real flawed and relatable.

The entire book was written clear and I did notice a small error here and there but they are totally negligible. Mild profanity is there and the sexual content isn't too descriptive or OTT. This is simply a fabulous multi time read for all those die hard romance fans aged 18+. The only drawback I felt was that this being the last book in the series at the moment, I really thought the author would have talked a bit more about the other couples specially Audrey and Jackson. Otherwise this is simply a bingeworthy series indeed !!! I am really looking forward to reading more by Dani Mclean.
