At peace in the stable, Hest cares for the visitors to Stad while spinning tales of adventure for the innkeeper’s son. But when a foreign warrior purchases him as a slave, he must decide if he’s willing to live the adventures he’s told.

With his new country under attack from an old enemy, Hest must learn to fight or lose his life in battle. While recuperating from injuries, he overhears a plot of treason. Choosing where his loyalties lie will seal his fate and that of a kingdom.

Hest’s already lost one family. He’ll do anything to keep his new one—even ride out to battle and most-certain death.

I enjoyed reading this series opener. The fantasy world is well developed and the writing style creates a pleasant read.

The hero, Hest, starts out satisfied with a small life, but when he's drawn into a larger sphere against his will, he sees that he could be so much more--provided he survives. He meets challenges not only with bravery but sometimes by befriending the unlikely. This particular twist is less common in epic fantasy and it's a nice change. If you like playing with language, this story also delivers on that fantasy trope, and the glimpse of a dragon promises more for future books.

An amazing story of Hest, who lives a quiet life. After he’s sold, he realizes how much more to life there is. Is he willing to take a chance. Loved the characters, especially Hest.

I'm going to step into trouble, and immediately admit that the cover is not my thing, which made me hesitant to pick this one up (Yep, I'm superficial like that). Gosh, I'm glad I took a peek anyway because this is really an amazing read.

Hest is a stable hand in a country, which gets its light from two stars. Not much grows, but that's the only way he knows things. He's heard stories about the other side of the planet, where the sun only shines and burns everything. Then, there's area in between, and that's where their food and wood comes from. When a warrior from this lusher country visits the inn and demands Hest take special care of his horse, little does he realize that his life is about to change. The warrior pays Hest's foster mother money for him, and Hest finds himself as the squire to a man, who knows kings and is about to go to war.

This is one of the better written, fantasy tales I've read in awhile. It holds mages, dragons, warriors, a foreign planet, horses, kings, and so much more. The world is rich, well developed, and doesn't drag, in the least. Every page is grabbing, and every moment holds something of interest...and still, it isn't rushed and flows at a wonderfully, steady pace. There's intrigue, secrets, growth, friendship, crushes, battles, and....well, it's simply rich in every way and form. Even the characters shine with their own personalities, goals and backgrounds.

Hest is a young man, who is very easy to relate to. He does have a sense for adventure. He things. Or maybe not? And that's what makes him so much fun to connect with. He's just a guy, who finds himself in one of life's flips and has so much growing to do and so much to learn. He's not cocky, he makes mistakes, he's by no means a hero, but he's determined to do his best...whatever that might mean. He's caring, humble, and clever. In other words, he's the perfect character to start out a journey to a series, and one that has so much room to grow that it makes it fun.

While this is a solid fantasy read, it still flows easily and quickly. The dialogue comes across very naturally as do the characters' actions and decisions. Even the kings and such each bring just the right dusting of quirks and attitudes to make them human with all of their pomp and circumstance. And it's written for the age group. I'd even recommend this one for upper middle graders, since Hest is that easy to connect with and the read isn't inappropriate.

I'm so glad I found this one and can't wait to see where the series goes from here. I received an ARC and enjoyed the adventure and world.

As always Kandi Wyatt has created a series you have to read. Once I started the book I could not put it down. As I have said before, her world building is so realistic you find yourself along for the ride with the characters. She has created a world where some lands are in almost total darkness, while some lands have too much light. This creates a unique problem that kids who have taken science will understand. Without light you can’t grow products to help you life. On the other hand if you have too much light you have the same issue. She has created these worlds and the people who inhabit them with such skill.
Hest, the main character lives in a land where very little grows. He has never seen a tree. Any wood they have must be imported so it is limited. His parents are dead so he works for a woman who runs the tavern. He has feelings for her daughter and her son is like a little brother to him. He is in charge of the stables and beyond good with horses. One day a man shows up with a magnificent horse. Hest doesn’t get off to a very good start with him. The next day as the man prepares to leave he finds Hest working his horse. It is through this activity a life changing decision is made for Hest. He sees the man hand a bag of money to the woman who has been like a mother to him since his own died. He believes he has been sold. He goes with the man. It is along this trip he learns he is not a slave but something more.
Hest grew as a character and a man throughout this story. However, knowing this is a new series I know there is so much more to learn about this character. He proves his loyalty not only to the people of the new land he now belongs to but also to a dragon. Yes! I knew the master storyteller of dragons would have to place one somewhere. At least I hoped she would. I can not wait to read the next book and learn more about this new world she has built. I do hope I left enough teasers here to make you order your copy today. You won’t regret it.

This was a great opener for a new series that's sure to capture the imagination of both young and older adult readers. Hest has lived an extraordinary life, and it all comes to a head during a war. He's faced with an almost impossible choice, and while I won't give spoilers here, by the time he reaches that decision you've already fallen in love with him as a character. The world is well-developed and rich, and even the supporting characters have quite a bit of depth. I'm definitely looking forward to book two!

Uprooted is such an amazing and fun adventure! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.

Hest is a young guy, a teenager that lives in a simple part of the realm. He has never seen trees and there is no much light. After his parents passed away the inn keeper took him in. He is a stable boy who loves to take care of the horses. One day when a mysterious man comes by the inn and seen talking to and then paying the inn keeper. The next thing Hest knows he is being told to get his stuff and that he is going to be leaving with the man. He thinks that he has been sold as a slave but he will soon find out that his new position is so much more. With no idea what will happen next Hest leaves behind his life to begin a new one in a part of the realm that he has only heard stories about.

Once Hest leaves with the man is when the story gets really adventurous. Hest is thrown into situations and battles that he has no idea how to deal with. I loved when they made it to his new home at the castle. He meets so many new people, gets a horse of his own, starts a whole new life and will even meet a dragon. Things are not all good though. There are people that want the king dead and that want to take over the kingdom. Hest will have to decide who he can really trust and wonder what will happen next?

This story and the plot was so well written. The author did an amazing job on the story building. I just loved reading this and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. If you love fantasy than I recommend you read this book. You will not be disappointed, it is so good! This e-book was provided to me for an honest review.

An orphan was purchased not as a slave but as an apprentice. And so, begins Hests life escapade.

A campaign of horses, kings, queens and perhaps princess love and at least one Dragon. All to fight the war. It's a really engrossing well written adventure tale!! I did not want to put it down and definitely hope to read the entire series. Congratulations to the authoress, Kandi J Wyatt!

Uprooted by Kandi J. Wyatt is exactly what it sounds like, the story of a boy taken from the only home he knows and transplanted into a strange new life.

It's a very compelling premise with a relatable character (I moved a lot as a kid). Hest has to adjust to a new life, practically a new world. He has to deal with miscommunication and people who don't keep him in the loop.

One of the main plot points is Hest dealing with a literal language barrier, so it does have more made up words in it than I like in my fantasy. But none of them are too hard to pronounce. Unless I'm pronouncing them wrong. But we won't know for sure unless an audiobook comes out.

I do feel like the story starts a little slow but I do blame it mostly on Hest learning a new language. Once the action picks up, it picks up quickly.

I really enjoyed the later part of the novel as it had lots of court intrigue, fighting and Hest learning about mysterious powers he didn't know he had.

If you like Fantasy that really lays out the groundwork for their worldbuilding, with detailed descriptions about people groups and places then you will love uprooted.

If you like the fantasy worlds you read to be centered around a realistic and relatable character then you will love Uprooted.

If you are a language nerd, you will really love Uprooted.

*Thank you to the author for giving me a free copy of Uprooted. My review above is an honest representation of my thoughts on the work provided and is provided willing.*

Eighteen-year-old Hest was happy working in a stable and telling stories. When a warrior purchases him as a slave, he is faced with the prospect of living out the stories he told. Hest now must learn to fight, and it's while recuperating from injuries that he overhears a treasonous plot. Where do his loyalties actually lie?

I'm glad that the slavery purchase was a misunderstanding, and that Hest isn't actually a slave. Hest was miserable until that was clarified, thinking he could never return to the only home he'd known for twelve years. He's meant to be a squire, learning to be a warrior and horse trainer. There's the inevitable posturing in the army, demonstrations that Hest isn't a warrior yet, and teaching Hest about the rest of the world. His eagerness to learn puts him in the position to hear conversations, and because of his ignorance, others think they're taking him under their wing, allowing him to be a spy for the king.

The details about the world are fascinating, and I enjoyed that the best out of this book. Because Hest is such an innocent about the wider world and other kingdoms, teaching him the language and history also teaches us. I found the final quarter of the book to be the most exciting, and I enjoyed that part the best. This is the start of a series, so there's a lot more in store for Hest in future novels.

Goodreads needs updated because this is actually 375 pages long from first page to last on my Kindle 🤣

This was a really well wrote fantasy book, but it was overly long.
When it came to battle scenes found myself skimming a lot as I felt those and other areas could have been shortened a bit and the length of them made my attention wander.

I found it hard to develop a relationship with Hest, and kept seeing him as a 14 or 15 year old boy, but enjoyed the multiple characters and the general plot of the book.

Overall a decent read

If you had the chance to live the adventurous stories you’ve been telling from the comfort of your home, would you take it? Poor Hest doesn’t seem to have a choice. Sold as a slave to an ambassador of a faraway kingdom, he leaves the stables in a kingdom of never-ending night and enters a world of daylight—and intrigue. The world Wyatt has built for this epic fantasy series is vast, with many different kingdoms, multiple languages, and lands of both eternal night and eternal day. I am very interested to see where Hest and Sydur go from here!

Wonderful world building sets the stage for an adventure to remember!

Hest, a common man with a simple life and simple dreams has his thirst for adventure awakened when a stranger pulls him from everything he knows. How will he handle it?

This story is filled with remarkable characters, exciting new lands, and complex world building. However, it truly shines because of the heart of its characters! If you love intrigue, battles, dragons, and heroes with hearts of gold make sure you pick up this gorgeous tale!

Unique and clever

I enjoyed the new language--it added realism to the story. The pacing was just right. There was plenty of foreboding and action. There is a hint of the conflict still to be resolved. It makes me want to read the next book in the series. I loved the honor of the main characters.
