This is one of the strongest volume ones to come out of Jump in recent memory. I don't typically get into the more slice of life style series, with the exception of Witch Watch, but this hooked me before chapter 1 even ended. The expressions and personality in each character is palpable, and it draws you into the story. You can feel Akane's passion for her work with every performance. I also want to recognize that this is the ONLY WSJ series currently in the magazine to have an exclusive female protagonist. She doesn't get snubbed by any of the supporting cast. Just Akane and her story. It's series like these that are gonna push Jump's envelope. And I'm so glad I get to be here to watch.

Wonderfully unique!
I'm very surprised to find a story like this on the Shonen Jump app. Not only does it star a female protagonist that's well written with her own hopes and dreams, there was no unnecessary sexualization of female characters, either. (At least, not in the first 7 issues). Akane is a wonderfully driven and interesting character. You can really feel her thirst to be the best rakugoka and her willingness to do whatever it takes. Her unwavering faith in her father just adds to the heart of the character and I found myself excited to see where the story takes her.
The artwork is lovely and very expressive! The storytelling is the most important aspect of the manga and if the facial expressions weren't so well drawn, it would ruin the magic.
This is the most excited I've been about a debut volume of a manga in a long time and I'm excited to read more of it!

To honor her father, a teenage girl wants to break into a traditional form of Japanese storytelling performance called rakugo that seems to be dominated by male performers. She'll need all her spunk and determination to make it past stage fright and into the apprenticeship system where she'll need to train.
It's a pretty typical manga about a talented novice trying to become the best in their field, but the field of endeavor is pretty close to unique, though I did read another manga about rakugo back 2018. Akane-banashi is a much livelier take though, and I doubt I'll set it aside after a couple volume like I did with Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Vol. 1.

A series about the traditional japanese art of storytelling. Just so interesting and really something different in manga. I liked it a lot!
Also I'm wondering why no german publisher has picked this up yet. It is quite the popular series in Japan as far as I know and it would be a shame if it wouldn't be translated widely.

Fun and interesting start to a story about a young woman determined to enter the world of traditional Japanese storytelling Rakugo.
This after her father was unceremoniously expelled from Rakugo school.

As a child, Akane watched her father fail out of a program dedicated to training rakugo, traditional Japanese storytellers. Now in high school, she is pursuing the same career under the same teacher. This book has a lot of familiar series-set up elements- a rival older student, a series of fellow trainees, a reluctant mentor- but unfortunate didn't deeply capture me. I probably won't read more.

I enjoyed reading this lively manga about the art of rakugo!
A recommendation from Kevin and Aurore, the librarian friends who accompanied me in the Kansai region in May 2025, this manga centers around Akane, the daughter of a rakugo performer, as excited as her father Shinta about this traditional art. Shinta works tirelessly to pass the exam to become a member of the Shin'uchi, the highest rank in the rakugo scene, to be able to fully support his family. Because of jury member Issho Arakawa, not only Shin'uchi flunks the exam but he is also excluded from the Arakawa school of rakugo, without knowing why. Akane vows to become a professional rakugoka and discover why her father was given such a rough treatment.

Reading it, I learned about the minimalist and elusive art of rakugo, the world of yose cafés. The manga also succeeds in showing the part played by seniority in this art and its difference with other art forms involving storytelling, like Manzai, said to be more closely related to standup.
I loved the "饅頭こわい" rakugo story ("I am afraid of little cakes") and how magaka Takamasa Moue rendered Akane's highly expressive facial expressions! The relevance of "kibataraki" in rakugo was also made clear from the assignment/internship Akane is given in a restaurant to better understand the use of this precious skill in her art. It was truly reminiscent of my current professional branch, where we inform and answer demands from passengers on a daily basis, without being too quick to interpret or judge in order to properly understand and answer accordingly.

Akane loves the Japanese art of rakugo, but she really loves it when her dad is doing it. But when he suffers an unexpected and devastating setback, she’s determined to show the world how good he is, even if she has to do it in his place.
The fact that this is in Shonen Jump, is popular, AND I like it too has to be some kind of sign of the apocalypse. At first, I wasn’t sure if I had room in my heart for two manga about rakugo, since we already have the very enjoyable My Master Has No Tail covering this particular form of storytelling and doing it rather satisfactorily.
But this is very much, pardon the expression, its own animal and being set in the modern era would be enough to differentiate itself, but this also dispenses with the magical realism aspect entirely and focuses on how regular old humans do rakugo.
And it’s fascinating. We can’t go any further without giving big props to the manga’s art, which is really elegant at depicting the shifts in character and various actions used to perform rakugo. It’s a delightful way of doing things that easily gets across why this works and how much skill is involved. It benefits from being grounded in reality.
Akane is also a fantastic hero and super easy to like early on, as her introduction has her using the skills she’s observed from her father to take down an obnoxious bully, to a point anyway. She’s very plucky and hardheaded, but also very loyal to her dad.
Her style is neatly differentiated from her father’s, even though she has been learning the same things from the same places, just because he doesn’t know how to get past his nerves and the burden of being a provider for the family.
Which sets up a big turn of events that, yes, does look like it’s setting this up to be a rakugo battle manga with some real boo-hiss villains and special techniques and areas that people have expertise in and can Akane overcome these odds to win?
And I am absolutely here for it. I love subverting the competition style away from its more traditional leanings and into something unique and Akane has a compelling reason to keep going and with her dyed hair and youth she stands out amongst the others.
Even better? She’s not perfect. Even in this volume where she racks up some very impressive showings, it’s clear that she hasn’t completely mastered the craft and is more of a diamond in the rough than a brilliant artist who needs no polish.
It’s funny, it’s smart, it really makes a heck of a splash. It takes a thing that could be absolutely inscrutable to an audience and makes it easy to follow and even enjoy and that’s something that I never got from My Master Has No Tail, as good as that series is. Pile on some rivals and some other competitors and you have something I am really excited to see more of.
5 stars - eh, what can I say, I am in a generous mood, but a solid story and solid art can add up to something more and this hits the ground with an easy to grasp premise that makes a complicated performing art very digestible and palatable. It’s strong work.

I am so completely DOWN for this. We have a female protagonist going into a mostly male field of entertainment that is unique to Japan, to bring back her father's honor, as he was disgraced by the Big Bad. There are rivals, but it is respectful and there doesn't seem to be a love interest in sight, which is refreshing. She has goals and isn't going to toss them aside for a pretty face. I LOVE that. She also isn't a Mary Sue. She has to WORK for what she wants and she's not afraid to do it.
I was going to say this was four stars, but after realizing how unique this is (at least to me) and how we have a strong female lead with a strong will to achieve her goal that doesn't involve getting a man, I'm bumping it up to five.
This is most definitely one I will be recommending to all of our manga readers at the store, and just recommending in general.

There’s something so wholesome about this series that I love. Akane is such a great character whose sheer determination and dedication to her craft is inspiring, and the world of rakugo is so fun to learn about! It’s also funny as hell!

Pour sauver l'honneur de son père et le venger de son exclusion, une jeune fille moderne et dynamique pénètre le monde très masculin et très codifié du rakugo, théâtre traditionnel humoristique au Japon. J'en ai appris ses codes que je ne connaissais pas de façon plaisante... Attendons la suite...

Après avoir fini la série Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Vol. 1, je dois avouer ne pas avoir retrouvé une production de BD similaire à ce que je ressentais à la lecture de la décalogie. Akane-banashi n'est pas Descending Stories, ce n'est pas son objectif, mais réussi, dans ce premier volume, a représenté les artistes de rakugo avec une élégance, un dessin et un talent indéniable.
Dès les images qui accompagnent le chapitre 1 où on voit Toru en train de mimer sur scène un humain en train de manger dans un bol, je savais que j'avais bien choisi ce manga. Les expressions sont bien choisies pour les personnages qui en imitent d'autres et nous plonge vraiment dans l'atmosphère du monologue. Si le manga choisi aussi parfois d'illustrer d'autres personnages complètement pendant la présentation pour montrer la puissance du jeu d'acteur qui fini par s'incarner autrement, ce n'est pas au détriment de la représentation de son jeu qui est aussi bien montré. Finalement, on ne passe pas très longtemps sur les contes rakugo, bien que les amateurs les reconnaîtront sûrement (juste de mon visionnage et ma lecture d'une ou deux séries, j'ai vite reconnu Shibahama).
Sinon, l'histoire de la série est intéressante, on passe le premier chapitre à mettre les bases qui vont justifier la poursuite de la protagoniste dans le restant de la série, c'est bien exécuté, c'est crédible, et c'est le bienvenu plutôt que d'avoir à le subir en flashback tout au long de la série, ce n'est pas un des détails qui auraient mérité d'être dissimulé (contrairement à l'intrigue de l'expulsion des jeunes acteurs). C'est aussi un bon manga de "formation" qui se concentre, dans le dernier chapitre, à explorer la progression psychologique d'Akane qui prend conscience de ses défauts, des manières de les surmonter tout en en apprenant davantage sur le rakugo, les attentes du public, etc. au-delà du jeu d'acteur et de la mémorisation des textes ce qui sont des détails intéressants sur la pratique théâtrale et la création en elle-même.
Un très bon début, j'ai hâte de le recommander et au prochain volume.

Akane can probably never remember a day when she wasn't a fan of rakugo, the Japanese version of stand-up storytelling only it's performed in traditional attire and while sitting down, and it's all because of her dad. However, after her father experiences a setback as a rakugoka, Akane vows to take it upon herself to show the world just how good of a rakugoka she can be especially in a male dominated field and thus, begins her story.
Akane-banashi, which aptly translates into Akane's little stories, centers Akane as the main character effortlessly. Even though this is just the first volume, the reader is already aware of her personality, her unwavering passion for rakugo and what drives her. I love manga characters that have a little bit of a Luffy inside of them and Akane is definitely a contender.
Healthy parental relationships, a rival of sorts, a solid mentor, and an eclectic cast of characters, the first volume sets the stage nicely for the story to move forward. Needless to say, I can't wait to read more about Akane's adventures in the world of rakugo.
With rakugo being the central theme of the manga, it goes without saying that the art has to pull more than its usual weight and boy, does Moue do a great job of it. Detailed, unapologetic and expressive, Akane-banashi does a wonderful job of storytelling via facial expressions. I have no notes.
P.S. For some reason (probably the cover, LBR), I thought this would be a historical manga but was pleasantly surprised to find out it's very much a modern slice-of-life and that the art of rakugo is alive and well in Japan.

Un premier tome qui est franchement hyper coolos !
La proposition est plutôt originale : Akane, la protagoniste est passionnée par le rakugo et décide de consacrer sa vie à cet art du spectacle humoristique japonais pour rendre fier son père et prouver que la patte artistique de son père (style qu'elle s'approprie) mérite d'être récompensé. Elle va donc évoluer dans un milieu très masculin et surtout très codifié et strict. Rien que pour ça je trouve que c'est déjà un beau prologue.
Je trouve ça intéressant que le mangaka ait décidé de proposer une œuvre autour de cet art si spécifique et qui peut être considéré à tord comme rasoir et dépassé. J'apprécie aussi les quelques panels qui traitent des problématiques que peuvent rencontrer les artistes et notamment ceux de l'art du spectacle, c'est réaliste, touchant et ça rajoute du corps à l'histoire !
Au même titre que dans les mangas/animes de sport, on sent que la progression du perso va suivre un schéma classique : un(e) newbie dans sa discipline mais qui a un petit plus qu'il va falloir savoir exploiter afin de se perfectionner et battre les plus grandes références de la dite discipline. (Du coup pas de nouveauté de ce côté-là je pense).

Pretty good but not sure if the subject matter is my thing. Basically it's about people who act out stories on stage by themselves. This starts with a father trying his best and failing and then years later his daughter gives it a go. It's sweet but also not something I'd probably read too often but I might check out volume 2.

Je ne savais pas du tout à quoi m'attendre et franchement ce premier tome m'a passionné ! Je ne connaissais pas du tout le Rakugo... enfin, j'en avais déjà vu, mais je n’en connaissais pas le nom. Ce premier volume est une introduction à un art que je trouve beau et j'ai aimé suivre la manière dont m'héroïne entre dans ce milieu.
De plus, je trouve les dessins très expressifs. Ils vont très bien avec ce genre et je suis déjà curieuse de voir jusqu'où Akane va nous mener. Une belle surprise à mon goût.

super sympa de découvrir par ce biais un art que je ne connaissais pas du tout, le médium du manga est intelligemment utilisé pour le représenter et l'auteur a déjà réussi à bien établir les personnages et le but

Yang ini juga bisa dibaca di Manga Plus! (ﾉ´ヮ`)ﾉ*: ･ﾟ Sukaaa~!!❤ Sudah dimuat sampai chapter 12!(☆ω☆)
Kisah Akane, putri dari seorang rakugoka, yaitu orang yang menampilkan rakugo ~ profesi yang menarik (≧◡≦) seperti mendongeng sekaligus melawak. Rasanya deg-degan sekali ya, kalau penontonnya nggak ketawa (*꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ)
Cerita dibuka dengan penampilan sang ayah dan Akane yang masih SD (^ヮ^) lalu bergulir ke... [diputus karena spoiler]. Yah, di dunia mana pun, saat kuasa dan kata-kata "senioritas" itu lebih dipentingin ketimbang manusianya, rasanya kepengin nampol pake sekop, ya (＾＾＃) //jangan. Yang aku suka
Gambarnya pun okee (≧◡≦) Yang paling aku suka dari cerita soal pentas-pentas kayak gini tuh cerita yang didongengkan juga dikisahkan, walau cuma sedikit. Jadi seperti membaca cerita dalam cerita \(^ヮ^)/ seperti 1001 Malam dan juga Topeng Kaca~

Sampai hari ini sudah muncul bab 70, dan begitu baca rasanya
Tapi, tunggu~ Kelewat cepet untuk langsung ngebahas bab terbaru!
Karena di pertengahan, sekitar akhir bab 20-an dan awal 30-an ada kejadian yang ngubah cara berpikirku tentang komik ini. Karena awalnya aku ngira kisahnya bakal berpusat di "Kalahkan Bos Terkuat yang Sudah Menjahati Ayah!"... TERNYATA~~
Dan kisahnya pun berlanjut, bukan seperti dugaanku semula, tapi lebih menitikberatkan pada proses hidup, profesi (rakugoka) yang telah dipilih, serta prinsip-prinsip dalam menjalaninya.
Lompat ke bab terakhir yang barusan dibaca, karena topik utamanya menurutku sama, yaitu

An excellent, promising start to a recent Jump series. It's essentially just a shonen power journey but set in the world of Rakugo (a specific style of Japanese storytelling), with the protagonist looking to reclaim her Father's fallen honor as a failed Rakugo performer.
Maybe it's a lot to get on board with, but I love it. Instead of worrying that the shonen protag might not be able to master their energy blast technique to defeat the bad guy, it's more about, 'oh what if she can't figure out how to make her jokes land, or how best to tell a story based on the demographic of your audience'.
The only negative thing I can think of is that the main character doesn't have a lot of personality on display so far, which is weird bc by the end of the first chapter, most shonen will let you know if the protag's gonna be dumb, badass, a wimp, a delinquent, or some mix of the four. That said, everything else is working well for me, so I'm not too bothered by it.

The artwork is nice though to be honest maybe if I cared more about the art of rakugo I might actually have cared more about this series I just feel like it kind of dragged on a bit much there’s probably an audience out there for it I’m just not in that audience I just really didn’t care much for the story.

This put so many smiles on my face while I read it!
Akane Osaki is a great protagonist. While she is a bit of a smart ass, and her tunnel vision in becoming a top rakugoka (a performer of the storytelling art form rakugo) ruffles the feathers of those around her, it’s a delight watching her develop her skills so she can avenge her father who was wrongly dismissed from the rakugo industry.
Writer Yuki Suenaga’s passion for rakugo and its dedicated practitioners imbues every page of this volume. Suenaga delivers a well-paced story that is anchored by a charming cast of characters.
Artist Takamasa Moue’s artwork is quite impressive. I loved the ink brush style Moue utilized for scenes that depicted stories being told by rakugo performers. There’s regular usage of hatching and cross-hatching which prevents Moue’s art from ever becoming flat. Well-placed screen tones provide further depth to Moue’s artwork. The highlight of Moue’s work though is found in the faces of characters. Faces and eyes are always full of emotion, but when a character is performing rakugo they become hyper-expressive, providing a sense of gravitas to what are, essentially, the action scenes of this manga.
I’ll definitely be continuing with this series and I can’t wait for the next volume. I’d recommend this to manga readers who enjoy MC’s who are strong female characters, people who are interested in Japanese culture, and potentially sports manga fans, because “Akane-banashi” is very much about a character finding a purpose in their life and enduring the trials and tribulations to becoming the very best in their field.
I would have gone higher with my review but I’m playing it conservatively this volume to potentially provide higher scores for subsequent volumes. I also noticed a couple typos in the translated text.

Cualquier lectore de manga conoce el nombre de un shonen o spokon, en los que los protagonistas luchan por perseguir sus sueños (a veces literalmente, otras en competiciones deportivas), pero, ¿qué pasaría si mezclas esta temática con el arte japonés? Basicamente eso es lo que plantea Akane Banashi, manga en el que su protagonista quiere alcanzar la cima del mundo del rakugo.
El rakugo es un tipo de monólogo humorístico japonés con siglos de antigüedad, en el que une rakugoka interpreta normalmente una historia clásica humorística, interpretando a todos los personajes. En Occidente esto es muy desconocido, lo que hace esta obra aún más interesante al acercarnos un poco más al mundo nipón. Además, las explicaciones en torno a este mundo están muy cuidadas y puedes entender todo de manera muy sencilla.
Akane es una protagonista con la que conectas desde el primer momento, es muy carismática y decidida, luchando desde joven por cumplir su sueño. Aunque el trasfondo de su historia no sea el más original en algunos aspectos, sí que logra enlazar perfectamente con el mundo del rakugo al tiempo que te muestra cómo funciona su jerarquía compleja. Tengo muchas ganas de conocer a la protagonista un poco más y ver cómo avanza su historia.
El dibujo es muy limpio y sorprende por su versatilidad, ya que el mangaka juega con su estilo para lograr darle a las historias un toque diferente al resto del manga. Tanto la traducción como la edición del tomo está muy cuidada, pero he de decir que me ha decepcionado su tamaño. No comprendo porqué milky ha optado por un tomo más pequeño a su línea normal de manga, teniendo en cuenta que mantienen su precio estándar.
En definitiva, este primer tomo te sumerge en un mundo interesante del que tengo muchas ganas de conocer más acompañando a Akane en su camino al estrellato.

I had high expectations for Akane-banashi, due to the fact that I'd heard great things about it. Now, after reading only one volume, it's difficult to say whether this series is a masterpiece, but what I can say is it has the potential to be.
The premise is interesting, and while reading, I learned about the performance genre that is rakugo. I had never heard of rakugo before, despite the fact that I read manga. From this, I conclude that rakugo isn't particularly popular in current Japanese culture, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's irrelevant. Perhaps I'll notice it mentioned more often now that I know what it is.
So far, my favorite aspect is the art. I would like to emphasize the expressiveness seen within the characters. The faces convey so much emotion, whether that is disgust, humor, or determination. The art is a large portion of why I think this series will go far.
I will be reading more soon.

It was a good start. Nothing over the top or super-fantastic, but good enough. Characters here are quite unique, as the game is also unique. Going into this book I expected to have an experience like Hikaru no Go, but its not quite there. Here I understand the game slightly better. However, I don't understand why just one person can give the verdict on who can go up in the rank. Yes he can be the top guy, but there are other guys almost same level as him. Also, even if you are not titled top, you can still continue telling story. Here, I also don't get the idea why Akane's father had to quit altogether.
I guess, as a first published story, these leaks can be overlooked. But, I am taking a star off for that. I don't feel any emotional punch there, thank you very much.

The topic of this manga seemed so cool I got it as soon as it was released.
While the main topic did live up to my expectations, the execution wasn't always a favorite of mine.
It think it's very hard to put into drawings such a complex art, since the very beginning, even for a person who has no idea what the whole rakugo world is, the first thing that comes into mind is that facial expressions are a key element to both the real and the manga version of this art.
I found the drawings sometimes "hard to read". While the text was very clear with the context, the facial expressions weren't always following the text. If this was a standard manga, I would say the art was pretty good, but for a manga with a topic like this I have to say it needed some improvement.
The story itself seems interesting and very catchy already.
There are some parts slower than others, and others that are too fast.
I think what's missing is a sort of balance that I really hope to find in the next volumes to come.

A manga set in the world of Rakugo, a traditional Japanese art of storytelling, and one of my current favourites in the manga/graphic novel category. Akane is such a fantastic female protagonist and the story is a joy to read!
Rakugo as a setting may not grab your attention at first, but give it a try. Technically shonen, it does an amazing job of introducing Rakugo to a younger (and also older) audience, even to non-Japanese as myself, and masterfully convey the Rakugo stories and performances. And it does it with a story that is fun and, surprisingly, also very shonen.
Read it weekly on Weekly Shonen Jump or the collected books, like the one tagged in this review.

J’ai bien accroché! Super original, c’est vraiment une bouffée de fraîcheur dans le monde du manga!
Ce n’est ni du sport, ni des combats mais franchement l’histoire reste excitante et entraînante! Le concept est bien exploité pour le moment
Les dessins sont jolis et la perso principal a un look et un caractère unique!
