This novel has absolutely bewitched me. I had zero expectations going in because 1) I usually avoid A/B/O and mpreg tags I’ll add something about this at the end in case it’s a spoiler and 2) I thought it was going to be somewhat unserious I was quite wrong here. I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun yet also experienced such a wide range of emotions- happiness, excitement, amusement, comfort, pain, fear, anger, anxiety, sadness,etc. Something about this novel just hit(for me) in every possible way and I don’t think I can explain why.
CHARACTERS:
Rimbaud: omega, fierce, dominant, feisty, loyal, beautiful and passionate
Bai Chunian: alpha- adoring, indulging, ”whipped”, beyond infatuated, vulnerable, clingy, smart and loved/feared by many, bebe just wants a home and family 🥹
*Both are possessive, jealous, obsessed, completely and totally in love, self-sacrificing, strong, powerful, indulgent, and SO PROUD of each other
*I might come back and list every single one of my favorite characters because there are SO many and they all deserve recognition
TROPES/TAGS/WHAT TO EXPECT
🦁 A/B/O but not a beta in sight. Also very little mpreg if that is something you don’t like (or do!) Omegas are valued and often considered equal (there are multiple strong/powerful omegas)
🦁 Modern supernatural sci-fi (not interstellar)
🦁 Interconnected dark and tragic pasts for the CP
🦁 Experimental subjects, animals characteristics with abilities. This is so interesting but also has some things that will make you very sad
🦁 Multiple CP’s and lots of time with each- most even get their own extra which I loved
🦁 Found family and amazing characters throughout. The side characters are everything in this novel. Your heart will get broken though. There is a dazzling amount of characters but each ability is unique is pretty easy to keep up with. Pay attention to all characters because the author doesn’t do NPC-almost all have an important role. I would say the characters are my favorite thing about this novel but I also adore the romance, humor, world building, and plot!

🧜🏼♂️Rimbaud and Bai Chunian’s relationship is the star of this novel. The way they comfort each other. Their past as it’s revealed will make your heart ache. The way they grow together and learn to navigate their relationship is just so endearing. I have very limited experienced with A/B/O so I don’t know how often this happens but the nature of their relatioshiop is very much omega thinks he’s the alpha. Love the openness between them.

This book is delightful, tragic, action-packed, comedic, and romance-filled with a large cast of intriguing characters with abilities and found family.

🐰Bi Lanxing/Lu Yan and and Han Xingqian/Xiao Xun’s relationships were so freaking adorable. I can’t remember the last time I read a novel with so many CP’s. I was a little sad/confused about a few of BCN’s students that I thought were going to pair up but didn’t

[this review is for the novel, not for the manhua]
Where do I even start with a review of a book that has thousands of pages and took me nearly a year to finish?
The Fallen Merman kept surprising me. The title is a little silly, the tags say this has comedic undertone. The beginning is a little odd, quickly introducing the two main characters, but it takes dozens of chapters for them to truly show who they are and to make reader love them. There are also many side characters - in true Lin Qian fashion, every detail is important, foreshadowing is on point and any named character that appears even for a few pages will return at some point.
As for our main cast - there’s Bai Chunian, a special agent tasked with various dangerous tasks. And his very first task is to rescue an escaped experimental subject, who just so happens to be his former lover, a peculiar merman named Rimbaud (yes, after the poet). Bai Chunian is also an experimental subject and an alpha with white lion traits, while Rimbaud is entirely non human omega with manta ray traits (his tail is ray-like, without the huge fin at the end :( but it’s transparent! You can see his organs and bones and all that isn’t covered by fins :D). And what are the experimental subjects I keep mentioning? Technically lab grown biological weapons, meant to be used in a world that has banned nuclear weapons. Things belonging to someone, not their own independent people. Technically. The truth is much more complicated, but gradually revealing it all is the novel’s job. Anyways, why are they former lovers? Well, because Rimbaud stabbed Bai Chunian and nearly killed him. And now Bai Chunian wants some answers.
The silly little book where a merman is thrown into a washing machine and eats everything slowly turns into a deeply nuanced novel with topics of the ethics of human experimentation, of the rights of experimental subjects who might not be conscious enough to truly control their own powers, themes of consent, miscarriage and dignity, and ultimately whether humanity is doomed to destroy itself in its reckless pursuit of progress and whether a higher power should intervene or just leave humans to clean up their own mess - even if that means the deaths of untold masses of innocents.
Of course, being nitpicky as I am, I had some complaints. For a large part of the novel, there were literally no women. But there were mothers… how? This is omegaverse. Alphas are big, masculine, protective, strong. Omegas are petite, physically weak, nurturing, cute. And mostly male. Any role that would fit a woman was taken by a male omega, to a degree that felt truly fetishistic. And there was no on screen smut, so in case of many characters I kept wondering why they aren’t a straight couple, since nothing about their dynamics (or their looks) would change. In the later parts some women finally arrived, but it still left me feeling quite uncomfortable. Clearly I am not the target audience, I understand omegaverse as a smut trope but in a smut free story it just feels so puzzling. All in all, I think the alpha/omega angle was entirely redundant and unnecessary. All the characters have glands that emit pheromones and - most of all - energy that manifests in super powers centred around specific things or animals. Some of these powers were incredibly original and imaginative. But I still think that all this would have worked without the alpha/omega angle. All the omegas did was replace women - including the struggles women face in our society and the prejudices they live with - like sexism, misogyny, expected gender roles… this time aimed towards male omegas, rather than women. And of course, all the alphas were big protective macho men. So weird. Some female omegas and alphas showed up, but it was so rare that it wasn’t even shown or explained how a female alpha works in this world (female omegas were just stereotypical women). Because NONE of the women were involved in any of the romance in all of the thousands of pages - other than one antagonist female alpha having a past fling with a male omega, which was never really elaborated on. I know women centric romance isn’t what people look for in BL novel but here the omegas could have just switched their pronouns to she/her and it would still work perfectly fine with no other change needing to be made. The only relevant pregnancy happened to a non-human character that could have a different biology (hell, it is explicitly stated that even their alphas carry children).
Anyways, my omegaverse rant aside… What ultimately kept this from a 5 star rating was the sheer length. Which is weird - I like my danmei to be at least 2k pages long, anything below 1k pages feels like a short story. But The Fallen Merman had major issues with pacing. Some arcs just dragged forever. I blame this for how long it took me to read, at some of the dull parts I just set the book aside to read something else. In my final push to read this, I resorted to just skimming some chapters, because it kept dragging on and it also felt repetitive, with some side characters making such torturously slow character progress. I think this is one of the author’s earlier works since the Error novels have no such issues, Error: Metamorphosis kept me hooked so much that I did the 2k+ pages without any major breaks. But here… yeah. I can’t put 5 stars on a book I have seriously considered not finishing at multiple points. But there were also many good parts and great story arcs, hence the still great 4 star rating. My friends or followers will know how stingy I am with stars!
So, my final verdict: It’s a sometimes lighthearted, sometimes deep novel with intricate plot, but it is very easy to read and follow. A nice little thing to keep at hand, maybe to be read with small breaks (shorter breaks that I did though) because of the sheer size of it. Don’t expect any smut, don’t expect a romance focused story. Expect a bunch of secret agent action, training, and meeting various interesting characters with special powers you would never have dreamt of. And a bunch of escape room scenarios.
And don’t be discouraged by the beginning. Sometimes the book focuses more on the plot and action than the characters, resulting in the characters seeming very flat. Especially in the first arc (the exams). The characters reveal their inner workings gradually and they slowly turn from a “one trick pony” into well rounded, real people. Just give it time. Rimbaud starts as just a silly little spoiled fish. Bai Chunian starts out as a wiser, older and experienced man that can’t be shaken by anything. Give it a hundred chapters and you’ll see just how wrong this initial judgement is. And as I said, sometimes it drags. But maybe it won’t drag for you - maybe the parts focusing on specific side characters that bored me to tears will be very enjoyable to you!

Nhân ngư hãm lạc
Đọc vì manhua vẽ quá đẹp, nhưng thú thật thì đoạn sau tác giả có hơi đuối, love line khá xoắn, nhưng chắc vì mình đọc cv nên nhiều chi tiết mình không hiểu cho lắm (Đặc biệt cái vụ trong nhà hình hộp trên núi đó) khiến truyện mất hay đi.
Sau này đợi có bản edit thuần Việt rảnh thì mình sẽ đọc lại vậy.

It’s honestly just too terribly written. CG translations are such extreme hit or misses, with more misses than anything. I keep getting completely taken out of the story because of the awkward translating. Certain things are translated literally and it makes for disjointed reading experience with too many repetitive mistakes.

很可爱的文，人类动物化萌点掌握得不错，也不觉得刻意，但情节弱一些。读到50%突然找不到故事的驱动力了，弃文。

I loved this so much! I have a thing for books on mystical beasts so this was a dream for me lol. it's such a beautiful story, I enjoyed the world building and the character growth. The side characters are so well fleshed out as well, which is a rare thing to come accross in this type of novels.
I kind of dragged out my reading because I didn't want to finish. I cried, laughed and blushed (lol) so much.
My only complain is that I kind of wished they had an extra with Pearl or something.
The translation is ok, I am thankful it was done so we can read the story.

Novel is about an ABO world, slightly futuristic, where aside from the standard ABO and the inequality that stems from it, there is also experimental beings that were created to be weapons or other tools. MC and ML both spent time in the research institution, which was where the MC grew up as an experimental subject. They now meet again after a few yrs of separation, and we follow them on a journey as they reconnect and uncover some of the complex politics and scheming that is occurring.
Novel itself is well-paced and has well-conceived plots, with some easter egg references here and there. Characterization is done well- everyone has a story and motivation and are very real. Not all of them will be likeable, but many are similar to normal people that we see and interact with (but more powerful and better looking ofc XD).

Изначально меня привлекла маньхуа по данному произведению. Загадочный красивый русал, парень с ушками белого льва, их общее прошлое.
Перевод на английском читала до 90 главы (на тот момент больше не было переведено), и история до такой степени захватила, что я сразу же пошла читать с гугловской помощью китайский оригинал. Это было ужасно, в половине случаев ты не понимаешь кто что и про кого говорит, т.к. местоимения часто не те. Жутко ломанный перевод, многое не поняла из-за этого. Но желание узнать что произошло и будет дальше было сильнее, поэтому сцепив зубы приходилось страдать.
История повествует о двух персонажах: короле океанов-омеге и молодом белом льве-альфе. Происходящее будет идти не только от лица наших героев, но и других второстепенных персонажей.
Скажу сразу, что внешность русала очень обманчива на первый взгляд. Он не хрупкий цветочек, а властный и временами жестокий правитель. В то время как лев в душе милый пушистый котёнок. Хоть на вид ему лет 17-18, на деле он родился только 4 года назад в лаборатории, занимающейся исследованиями и созданием зверо-людей со способностями. Он временами наивный, любит людей, хочет верить в лучшее.
Сюжет до конца книги был относительно ровным, у героев были миссии, они спасали подопытных из лабораторий, сражались с врагами + мелькала семейная жизнь русала и льва на суше. Прошлое постепенно открывалось, что приносило немного драмы. А вот последние глав 10-20 пошла жара. Это напомнило корейцев, у которых фильм с комедии может резко перейти в драму и ужасы. В конце истории присутствовали элементы хоррора, сапсенса, ангст, смерть персонажей и только потом уже ХЭ.
Единственное, что смущало во всей истории это какой-то пафос и Марти-сьюшность русала. Огроменные базуки, эпические прыжки, эффектное появление великого нагибатора, спасение своего альфы. Я словно блокбастер смотрела, что дико не люблю как раз из-за этого пафоса.
Перевод на английском читала до 90 главы (на тот момент больше не было переведено), и история до такой степени захватила, что я сразу же пошла читать с гугловской помощью китайский оригинал. Это было ужасно, в половине случаев ты не понимаешь кто что и про кого говорит, т.к. местоимения часто не те. Жутко ломанный перевод, многое не поняла из-за этого. Но желание узнать что произошло и будет дальше было сильнее, поэтому сцепив зубы приходилось страдать.
История повествует о двух персонажах: короле океанов-омеге и молодом белом льве-альфе. Происходящее будет идти не только от лица наших героев, но и других второстепенных персонажей.

OMG!!! I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH! I just can’t with how this story just grips me so much and hooked me from the very beginning to the very end, like they are just so cute, like all of them, but also their past experience are also so tragic and sad, i was so glad to know that the pearl survive tho I really want to see them together again but sadly we didn’t get that, I also love the relationship between xiao bai and Yan Yi family and it’s just so nice to see them as one big family, tho I wish we would have more bonding time with each other but anyway this is just so good, i also love all the side characters and all the cute side couples, like they are just all so cute, and all of them mostly got their own happy endings, but i just wish that there were more brother bonding and family bonding time, and i also want them to meet their child, like that would just be so cute but we didn’t get that 😭 but anyway this story was just so good

First off, I didn't know how long this actually was until about halfway through. Being over 1000 pages, you definitely felt it. It is extremely long and could have cut back a lot at times. The translation was good, but some parts didnt make sense. I'm not sure if it was the author or if it was just how it was translated. It is a good read, but at times, I almost felt forced to continue reading just to be done with it. I do love the ml and mc, and what they go through at times was heartbreaking. I do recommend this book, but it will take a while to finish, and the ending just happens. Everything is wrapped up, but it just kinda ends out of nowhere. Even the extras. I would give 5 stars but feel it lost one for being dragged out, and translation sometimes didn't make sense. But do give it a chance there great mc and ml.

DNF at chapter 165
I feel so bad giving this novel such a low rating because I really like the main couple (and the side couples too). They're both so devoted to each other and I love how possessive Rimbaud is, carving his name on Bai Chunian's stomach and arm.
Buuut I'm so bored. There's so little romance (and not in a slow burn way, because the couple is already together), and the plot is too fast and confusing to me. Too many things happening one after the other, and too many fighting scenes. Someone who likes action books will probably like this, but it's still so long and I'm so tired of fighting scenes

بهترین چیزی بود که میتونستم بخونم، همه شخصیت ها و اتفاقات رو دوست داشتم و مطمئنم دوباره میخونمش. بعد از اینکه دوباره خوندمش یبار دیگه میخونمش. بعد از اینکه یبار دیگه خوندمش چندبار دیگم میخونم چون لیاقتش رو داره. اینکه تعداد خیلی زیادی شخصیت داشت و همه بلااستثناء مهم بودن و هر 3 صفحه یک اتفاق جدید میفتاد خیلی جالب بود، برای همین یبار دیگم غیر از بار های قبلی که ذکر شد میخونم تا ترتیب رو بهتر حفظ بشم. خلاصه که عاشقشم و قربونشون برم و کاش بیشتر بود.

The way this book had me in a chokehold😭🤍 i adored Bai Chunian and Rimbaud’s story, the world building was amazing and there were so many times i couldn’t help but burst out laughing with Rimbaud’s remarks, i truly fell in love with all the characters🥺 please read this book, you won’t regret it
