Dark Alpha's Command

Rate this book
There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I’m coming for you…

I’ve been a part of so many different worlds I’m not sure who I am or where I fit in anymore. Honestly, with everything I’ve been through, being called across realms and encountering the beautiful Druid who instantly captures my attention—and my heart—shouldn’t have surprised me. But it did. Not as much as discovering how it feels to brush against her magic, however. Now, we must navigate these new waters and fight against our latest threat, hoping that our combined power and that of our allies is enough to defeat our foe. Because the Fae Others want to end the Reapers and take over the realm, and their leader is one of the most formidable enemies we’ve ever faced. The battle won’t be easy, but with this strong, resilient mortal by my side and some help from our friends, it’s a fight I’m more than willing to enter—as long as it means she’s by my side. Forever.

I'm so happy to get Balladyn's story. He's had such a major roll in all the connecting series, in so many different capacities. Personally, I think he's been one of the most important side characters through everything, and this book has proved it. It was nothing I was expecting, and yet greater than I could have hoped. I'm hoping we get Aisling and Xaneth's story next. They had some great development in this and I'm anxious to find out what power Xaneth has to be able to do what he's been doing.

This was such a good book!

The reason why I rated this 4 instead of 5 is because I felt like I was missing out on something, like I was lacking information. I know this was labeled as a stand-alone but I felt like I had to read a couple of the previous books to help immerse myself into this world. Also, I don’t know if it was because of my ARC copy, but more than 70% of the book was italicized which did make it quite hard in the eyes after a while.

Now everything else? LOVED. There was so much world building I can’t help but be impressed. I absolutely adored the characters and was so invested in them all.

I for sure will be checking out the previous- and future- books in this series.

ARC received from author

Even though I was expecting Aisling and Xaneth story, I was in no way disappointed that it was Balladyn's story. He has been in all the series and played such an important role with the Kings and Rhi.I loved the action and love. Especially loved seeing all the reapers again.

Here's hoping Aisling and Xaneth don't have to wait too much longer for their HEA.

At long last, Balladyn gets his own story and a chance at love. Dark Alpha’s Command is a fast-paced novel that entails love, conflict, and an epic battle that’s reminiscent of the ones against Bran and against Usaeil. This novel brings together all of Donna Grant’s Dark World inhabitants: Reapers, Druids, the Fae, Dragon Kings, and the Warriors. But will all of them together be enough to defeat the powerful Lena, leader of the Fae Others?

Of note, there is still one Reaper who has yet to find love. We’ll have to wait until March 2023 to read that tale. Looking forward to reading Dark Alpha’s Fury, the novel that concludes the Reaper series.

Donna Grant has once again displayed her unique ability to create characters and situations that keep you eager for more. I enthusiastically and impatiently await each of her novels.

Thank you to NetGalley and DL Grant, LLC for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Meh 🫤

This being Balladyn’s book, it should have been outstanding based on how he is written in the 20+ past books. It was fairly flat for me. Rhona was a lame heroine. Balladyn snark was missing. Their was absolutely nothing remarkable about this book. Balladyn deserved better.

DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND is the fifteenth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult REAPER paranormal, fantasy romance series -a spin off from the author’s Dark Kings series, which is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from the author’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. This is the new head of the Skye Druids Rhona, and Reaper Balladyn’s story line. DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is a continuing premise throughout. Balladyn’s story begins in the Dark Kings series.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death (aka Erith), on their own deathbed, to do her bidding-Death is the judge and jury; the Reapers are the executioners. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. All Reapers must follow two rules: never to fall in love; and never to reveal their existence to anyone but a group known as the Others, have declared themselves the rulers of the Fae, and their next ‘mission’ is to take down the Reapers, having failed to destroy the Dark Kings.

Told from several third person perspectives including Rhona and Balladyn DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND sees former Light turned Dark Fae turned Reaper Balladyn get his own happily ever after. Someone or something is calling Balladyn to the Isle of Skye, and upon his arrival he finds Rhona, a mortally wounded Druid, and with his own magic begins the healing process for the woman with whom he will fall in love. Rhona is the new head of the Skye Druids, and as such is facing a potential back lash from those who do not want to see her succeed but the attack against Rhona may have come from another direction, the Fae Others, a group of six Fae lead by Lena, a Dark Fae hoping to rid the world of the Reapers, The Dragon Kings, and most especially, the humans. With the arrival of the Druids from the MacLeod Castle (Dark Sword), and the help of the Reapers, Rhona and Balladyn begin to ferret out who may be responsible for the attack on Rhona but quickly discover there may be a dark mole hidden amongst one of their own. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Rhona and Balladyn, and the potential fall-out as The Others take aim, beginning with our story line couple.

Meanwhile Reaper Aisling continues to search for the illusive and tortured Xaneth. For years former Queen of the Light/Dark Usaeil imprisoned and tortured her nephew Xaneth, and upon his escape became something else, hunting the evil taking aim at the people he once loved.

The relationship between Rhona and Balladyn is one of immediate attraction, pulled together by an unknown force but an attraction Balladyn struggles to accept. As a Reaper, Balladyn must obey the command of Death aka Erith but the woman with whom he is falling in love cannot leave the Isle of Skye, for it is the home of the Skye Druid and our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters from all of the author’s interconnected series including Dark Warrior, Dark Sword, Dark Kings, and Dragon Kings. As the introductory story line to the author’s new SKYE DRUIDS spin off, DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND sets up the background and conflict facing the Druids of the Isle of Skye.

DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND is a story of betrayal, obsession and vengeance, power and control, magic, partnerships and love. The premise is captivating and intriguing; the romance is seductive; the characters are energetic, powerful and charismatic.

The story we have all been waiting on tenterhooks for has finally arrived and to be honest I was surprised from beginning to end. I have followed this world of Donna Grant’s since the very beginning, back when it was set in medieval Scotland and the plot was so different. I’ve experienced the world of Warriors, Druids, Fae, Dragon Kings and Reapers and through it all I have never been truly disappointed in the love and action that Donna brings to her characters and the magic she brings to my life through her writing. DAC is the story of a former villain finding his way out of the dark and to a love that he doesn’t truly believe he deserves but that we have been rooting for him to find for years now. Balladyn was introduced initially as a Dark Fae villain that was set to bring down the Dragon Kings and ultimately did a lot of damage in his quest, even going so far as becoming the King of the Dark, but ultimately he found his true family and what we thought was his place in the Reapers after being betrayed (again) to his death. Rhona is the leader of the Skye Druids, a position she truly doubts she is equipped for but she is determined to live up to mentor’s expectations now that he is gone from this world. When she is betrayed to her death, Balladyn’s surprising and timely rescue brings them close together and there is no denying the connection or the attraction they have both been fighting. But their foes as numerous and very well hidden, so only with the help of all of their allies (and even some unexpected ones) will they be able to root out all the evil trying to eternally separate them before they ever have a chance to build a future together. I was obsessed with this story and there was no way that I was going to accept anything less that Balladyn finding his ultimate happiness with his mate (thank you Donna!). His past has certainly been dark and twisted, but in my mind the best heroes have gone through these types of traumas and this growth in order to truly know the beauty of living in the light and finding the love of a woman that will give them their whole hearts. I loved seeing the vulnerabilities he shared with Rhona and how he fought beside her even though he wanted to stand in front of her when enemies approached. His strength of character might have been in question to himself as he made difficult and sometimes corrupt choices in the past, but once he accepted that everything led him exactly where he was meant to be, he was the best man and lover he could have possibly been for Rhona. Rhona has some serious issues with self-confidence for sure, but as she works with Balladyn she comes to accept that she is stronger, smarter, and greater than she ever imagined. The love and passion between them lead her to new heights, giving her a true reason to excel in her every endeavor not only to prove herself his equal but to protect those they both love and defeat an evil greater than any that has existed. She was sweet, gentle, and kind to those that she cared for, but when those she loves are being threatened she steps up and becomes the warrior to match Balladyn in every way. The fire these two inspire is irrefutable and from the first time they connect we experience it right along with them, leaving the readers just as on fire as the lovers. I loved seeing Balladyn and Rhona embrace their destiny and find a way to their HEA and into one another’s hearts forever. I cannot wait for more in this series and of course the coming Skye Druids series will be intriguing as well. These multi-connecting series keep things fresh and allow us to see so many points of view and get new sides of stories, as we experience the world from so many different angles. I just love the imagination of Donna Grant’s Dark World that continues to grow and expand and I am dying for what comes next.

So obviously I'm in the overwhelming minority here with my rating. My issue is that when a character annoys me, it really drags the book down for me. And at some point Rhona became that annoyance. Her dependency on Balladyn after knowing him for less than two days was extremely off putting. Only made worse when she would glare at and make demands of the Reapers because she couldn't function without him. I also get bored very easily when the main characters are always telling the other how perfect they are, and how good they are, and how beautiful they are. Of which we get pages and pages and pages and pages here.

Like most everyone else, I had been waiting for Balladyn's book. Now, don't get me wrong. His book was definitely good. It just seemed off to me that he had spent centuries pining for Rhi, but now all of a sudden he meets this druid and he immediately realizes that he loves her and what he felt for Rhi was just him believing they should be together because that's how they grew up? Kind of a stretch for me.

So anyway. Balladyn is abruptly awoken one night with this feeling that must find something. Immediately. He has no idea where it is, or even what it is, but this pull to act is so strong that it's only a command from Erith that even gives him pause. But it's a painful pause. When she lets him go, he follows this feeling and it leads him to a dying Rhona. Fortunately, Balladyn remembers reading an ancient spell that is the only hope to keep her alive until she can be healed by her Druids. Thankfully they make it in time, but it's obvious that someone has betrayed her. And that's what a good chunk of this book is about. Trying to figure out who it was. But we do get more good stuff aside from their obsessions with each other and lots and lots of meetings. We get a visit to the Warriors who offer their assistance in this war, another attempt on Rhona's life, and even some Dragon Kings.

I don't think it's spoiler to say that Lena is obviously behind everything in this book too. Her power is growing to a frightening strength and she is devious enough to use the Druids to get at the Reapers. Eventually it becomes clear why she wanted Rhona dead and what it all had to do with Balladyn. I'm not such a huge fan of prophecies though, so that whole thing was kind of 'meh' to me. I also didn't really like Erith's decision regarding Balladyn at the end, but I also get that that's just how it has to be with this kind of book.

The ending was again frustrating like the last book was. This series is now starting to remind me of this one because the bad guy flees Every.Single.Time.

Of course we get more of Xaneth here. Aisling has kept up her search for him, but is no longer having any luck. But that's because she doesn't realize that Xaneth is now following her. Now she feels like it's time for her to give up. He clearly won't talk to her, and obviously is purposely making it impossible for her to find him, so she decides to go back to the Reapers. The outcome that Xaneth has been telling himself he has wanted this whole time. Too bad he can't stop thinking about her more now that she's gone. He considers going to help the Reapers directly too, they have the same enemy after all, but he's too afraid of what they will think of him and the monster he thinks he has become. So he stays in the shadows killing all of the evil that draws him to it. Until the big battle at the end. Of course he joins, but Lena has figured out his weakness as well and delights in being correct. I'm really looking forward to Xaneth's book because I'm really expecting it to be good considering all that's going on with him. And maybe with a little luck, he might actually be free once the new Others are destroyed.

Okay... I have been waiting for Balladyn's story for quite some time, as his character was not something I saw coming in a book, especially as a good guy, but Erith chose him as a Reaper so let it be. He has a lot of secrets and right now it will be time to spill them - trust me he's on the complex side here! His match - Rhona, is a leader of Skye Druids, relatively new to this position. She aims to embrace this poison, but after being attacked and rescued by Balladyn, nothing will be the same... I like her - how he was so strong, open, and let herself feel when it was most needed.
Both characters are complex and will need some time to discover their feelings. As well as new settings - I love how it was smoothly provided here!
DAC is a well-written installment in a Raper series and an amazing introduction to the new series! Let Ms. Grant take you on an amazing journey with her series!

The redemption of Ulrik and now Balladyn was one of the reasons why I kept reading these sagas. What a great story for Balladyn, I loved the development of his character and that alliance where all the magical beings united was so epic, I loved seeing together all the characters that I've been reading about 8 years and still missing the final battle.

Balladyn's tale is finally here!

It's here, the second last book in Donna Grant's spellbinding and highly addictive Reaper series. More importantly Balladyn, the Light Fae warrior who became the Dark Fae King and now a Reaper, finally gets to have his story told. This is one of the two highly anticipated stories I have been waiting for, and once I started I couldn't put it down. From the outset, the tone and pace of Balladyn's story was superbly set, inviting the reader to curl up and become captivated and thoroughly engrossed.

"Fate had intervened in their lives for a reason."

Balladyn has had to fight for everything in his life, a life that saw him twice betrayed. Becoming a Reaper has brought him a type of contentment, he has found a family, yet something was still missing. The moment he is pulled from Erith's realm and finds himself in Dublin, Balladyn's life is changed when he finds Rhona, leader of the Skye Druids, injured and close to death. Instantly he feels a sense of protectiveness toward her, he's not going to let her out of his sight. Ever since Rhona was announced as the new Druid leader, she doubted herself, believing herself not to be powerful or experienced enough to hold that position. She is drawn to Balladyn, it is not just a physical one though, something is telling her that Balladyn is going to be important to her. Circumstances have brought Balladyn and Rhona together, now they must try to find out who is trying to kill her, what the Fae Others are planning next, and why they are involving the Skye Druids.

" ... there was no denying it ... It was as if someone had tied their destinies together."

Once again Donna Grant has blown my mind. Balladyn has been given the story he truly deserved, he was shown as a strong warrior, an emotional man, a man with both wants and desires, but there was more to him than even he expected, he had a prophecy to fulfill. I loved the way Balladyn and Rhona's relationship evolved, even though it progressed quickly it wasn't unusual considering the situation they found themselves in. Their passion was intense and extremely hot, sparks flew between them. Can they find happiness together when Balladyn is a Reaper and Rhona cannot leave Skye?

Donna's words were beautiful and addictive, her descriptions were brilliantly vivid. Her ability to allow her readers to immerse themselves and experience the lives of her characters. Speaking of characters ... Reapers, Druids, Warriors, even Dragon Kings, all feature in this stunning tale of power, betrayal, vengeance, passion, and love.

Next up is Dark Alpha's Fury, Xaneth and Aisling's story. I can't wait to see how Donna concludes this epic series.

Balladyn has held many important roles within his lifetime. Queen’s Guard, King of the Dark Fae, and lastly Reaper. Balladyn cannot ignore the call that manages to breach the realms to reach him. He arrives just in time to save a certain Druid female. Balladyn believes the Fae Others are behind her attack, but he first needs proof. He feels oddly connected to Rhona and the Scottish Isle of Skye. Can Balladyn protect Rhona from her enemies? Or will they be overwhelmed by their common enemy?
Rhona is the leader of the Skye Druids. A position she feels that she does not deserve. Rhona travels to Ireland only to be ambushed and left for dead. She never expected a Reaper – and not just any Reaper but the former King of the Dark – come to her rescue. Now Rhona, with Balladyn’s help, must figure out who amongst her clansmen betrayed her. Time is against them. Who can Rhona trust? Will her magic be enough to help fight the evil that threatens her home?
At first, I did not care too much about Balladyn. He first appears in the DARK KING series as the villain. However, as the series progressed, my thoughts about him changed. Balladyn started to redeem himself in small increments, proving that he is not completely evil. I am just happy that he finally found the place he belonged, and he found a person who truly loves him. If anyone deserves that happiness, Balladyn does. I love how Balladyn helped Rhona find her footing as a leader. He let her know it is okay to have self-doubts, but sometimes those doubts manifest unnecessary problems.
Rhona is another familiar name. She has appeared here or there in the DARK KING books, especially towards the end. I like how Rhona is still floundering in her leadership role. She continually wonders why her predecessor had chosen her. I also like that Rhona often second guesses her decisions. It proves that she is just like any other human, plagued with their self-doubts and insecurities. What I admire about Rhona is that she did not judge him unfairly because he is a Dark Fae. She knew there was more to him than what the world believed.
DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND is book fifteen in Donna Grant’s paranormal romance series, REAPER. It is also the start of her spin-off series called THE SKYE DRUIDS. These two series are intertwined with her DARK KING, DRAGON KING, DARK SWORD, and DARK WARRIORS world. I love that the Warriors from DARK SWORD and DARK WARRIORS have an important role in the story. Also, familiar characters from the DARK KING and DRAGON KING books appear towards the end.

Just when I think I know where this series is going, I find my assumptions are completely blown away. This is how I found myself as I plunged into the beautiful unknown that is Dark Alpha's Command. I was left staring in awe at the glorious wonder and the stunning beauty that is is magnificent masterpiece. This is one of my favorite series, and it only keeps getting better and better.

Balladyn finds himself forcibly pulled to cross realms out of the blue, and his finally destination is Earth. Never signing up for the journey that lay ahead, he is left completely in the dark as he tries to unravel each mystery in order to make sense of the complicated mystery that has become his life. Rhona finds herself an unwilling target if a viscous enemy who hides in the darkest of shadows and is not afraid to inflict pain and inspire rage to obtain the results they desire. Fate seems to have paired up Balladyn and Rhona out of every other possibility to fight this unknown assailant and rid her homeland of the evil that haunts her ever step. Will they be able to solve this complicated riddle together, or will they find their end all too soon at the hand of ruthless power hungry assassins?

I wasn't expecting Balladyn to be paired with someone like Rhona. Not only are their races enemies, but each of them individually do not appear to be someone the other would have chosen or ever thought of as anything more then a mere aquaintance. It's truly breathtaking how two people can be so perfect for the other, and it's such a beautiful miracle how their hearts come become so intertwined that you can't tell where one ends and the other begins. The comfort and passion that developed between these two is such a joy to behold. My heart can't contain the marvelous awe that I felt watching these two fall for the other from their quiet strength to their generous spirit . They truly make try perfect pair in every way.

I should know by now to never assume I know what will happen for the extraordinary genius that is Donna Grant never fails to leave me wickedly shocked, wonderfully surprised, and wildly elated at every turn. She has made this entire series an unbelievable success, and I can't wait to see what brings to life next!

Series: Reaper #15
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

After so many books, we finally see Balladyn find the one for him. Balladyn finds himself being pulled by an unknown force and finds an injured Rhona, leader of the Skye Druids. He rescues her but quickly finds he doesn’t want to ever leave her again.

Balladyn has been a character that I have really liked since he was introduced in the Dark Kings series. He was a great Dark Fae and became a great Reaper as well. He has gone through a lot of betrayal and heartache but he keeps going. I really enjoyed seeing Balladyn open up to Rhona and embrace his feelings, which hit hard and fast. They have an instant connection that is very strong and can’t be denied. Also, I really liked that he didn't stop her from fighting for her people, even if he really wanted to.

Rhona is the new leader of the Skye Druids and is still struggling to find her place. She doesn’t feel like she should be the leader and struggles to overcome her fear at being in this position. She struggles with the PTSD caused from being attacked and injured by her own kind as well. Rhona was just a wonderful heroine. She was strong, smart, and knew when to lean on others. I really liked her.

The fight against the Others ramps up in this one and results in a big battle on Skye. I enjoyed seeing all the different races work together against the Others to defeat them. My only real complaint about this battle is that I am getting tired of the villains always escaping at the last minute. It seems to be a very common theme for Grant’s books, and while I don’t mind it sometimes, it feels like it happens with every villain in her series.

Overall, this was a great couple and a great story. I loved that we finally get Balladyn’s story. He has been a staple of the Dark World for years now and I am glad he finally found a strong woman to walk beside him.

Trigger Warnings: attempted murder; PTSD; mentions of torture and imprisonment; violence; battle injuries

The excellent descriptions of the battles using magic had me glued to the pages.

Balladyn is content as part of the Reaper family, but he is lonely and still feels as if he doesn’t completely fit in. When he is pulled into the human realm by an unknown force, he follows, without question. He arrives just in time to save Rhona from dying. Rhona, the new leader of the Skye Druids, has been betrayed and her life is still in danger. Balladyn stays with Rhona to protect her and to discover the truth of the bond between them.

I was also super excited for Balladyn’s story and it did not disappoint. The mystery of who betrayed Rhona and the undeniable connection to Balladyn drove all the action right from the start. More questions than answers popped up as they got deeper and deeper into their investigation. I loved how magic was used in this book. It was powerful and nail-biting and everything you would want it to be.

Rhona and Balladyn were a fantastic couple. They brought out the best in each other, they worked well together, and they quickly made use of whatever magic was connecting them. I also enjoyed seeing the Warriors and their Druids again, as well as the small glimpses of Aisling and Xaneth.

Dark Alpha’s Command is book 15 in the Reaper series, that form part of the larger Dark World collection of series. In my opinion, you should start this from the start with Dangerous Highlander, but you can start with the first book of any of the series in this world, really. It is definitely best to at least read the Reaper books in order. I can highly recommend this entire series if you like paranormal romance with suspense, action, interesting villains, plenty of steaminess, magic, dragon shifters, and so much more.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m stoked! We finally get Balladyn‘s story. I wasn’t sure we would get one with all the ups and downs with this outstanding character. He went from shiny hero to evil villain to fierce Reaper and his journey runs through more than one series by this exceptional author. Balladyn was always a compelling character whether good or evil. And always a sexy beast. He’s had so many challenges and there are a few more in this story when something connects him with the new leader of the Skye Druids, Rhona. She’s a beauty with Druid magic but she is not yet comfortable with her new role. Her story starts out with a painful incident that calls on Balladyn to come to her rescue. From there mystery ensues when the culprit(s) are unknown. Is it the evil Others or a villain closer to home? And that is only one mystery in the story. It’s full of intrigue, danger and drama that calls for friends to aid Rhona, along with the Reapers, to uncover the ones behind the attacks. I loved seeing the old favorites from another series with the Warriors and the MacLeod Druids. So many fantastic supernaturals in one place! In addition to the terrific suspense and mystery, there is the swoon worthy romance that blossoms between Balladyn and Rhona. The fierce protective streak that drives Balladyn is panty melting, then add in his sexy heat and passion, and the beautiful Rhona’s is all in with the hunky Reaper. So good! Another two of my favorites, Aisling and Xaneth, also show up for the big fight. This is an excellent continuation of this Reaper series full of fierce supernaturals, male and female, intense danger, violent battles, evil enemies, and a superb good vs evil element. Then romance ain’t bad either. In fact, it is deliciously sexy with a couple that is on fire but are also supportive and protective of each other. Absolute perfection! I can’t wait for the next installment in this terrific series. This one is a must read!

This is the fifteenth book in the Reaper series, a spin off from the Dark King, Dark Warrior, and Dark Sword series, yes it's a lot but that means you get a fantastic world-building, characters that you will fall in love with. This time we finally get Balladyn story and we get Rhona to be his match in every way. The story is very entertaining, I love Donna Grant writing, the world-building is so good, the story will have you hooked from the start and will have you reading it in no time.

At long last! A redemption story for the ages. Good guy turned villain turned victim turned hero.
Balladyn has always been a compelling character. Donna Grant always says that she doesn't plot or storyboard her books, but there was always something that told me that there was more to Balladyn that meets the eye. We’ve waited so long for his story to be told and it did NOT disappoint. Grant’s ability to world build and the depth to her characters is astounding.
Rhona is the leader of the Skye Druids, but feels unworthy and unprepared for the role. When she is saved from death by Balladyn, a former Light Fae Commander turned Dark Fae King turned Reaper after his second betrayal by the most hated character of the previous series, they have instant attraction. They both have serious self-doubt issues and dangerous enemies before they can find their happily ever after. Although they fell together rather quickly despite Balladyn’s centuries-long love for the light Fae Rhi (and the King of Dragon King’s mate), we see more of the fire in Balladyn than we have seen for several stories. When he feels the pull to Earth to deal with the unknown danger he goes, despite the potential consequences.
As always, the spin-off ties in former characters, and it was WONDERFUL to see some of the Warriors characters again. Those of us who have read Donna’s books for years tend to become very attached to her characters. :-)
I loved their story and can’t want to listen to it in audio next. Thank you for the opportunity to read it before the official release and to share my thoughts about my favorite bad boy’s story. My only complaint is that the next (last) Reaper’s story won’t be available immediately. (Impatient much?)

Finally! One of the most complicated characters ever created gets his own book! When we first met Balladyn many books ago in Donna Grant's Dark Kings series, he was the villain torturing a favored character. I disliked him because he did horrible things yet i always felt empathy for what life had dealt him. So he was the perfect anti hero. So fast forward to this book, and we see a Balladyn who has grown and evolved, becoming a man worthy of his own HEA.

He is called by a mysterious force to aid and protect the Skye Druid Rhona who has been targeted by the enemy group called The Others. What follows is a beautiful dance of two people learning how to trust and love in the middle of a war. But what is the most compelling for me is watching Balladyn begin to realize that he is worthy of Rhona's love, and that he can be and is able to be forgiven and to forgive the past and reach for this beautiful future. Rhona is smart and delicate yet with a will of steel... doubting her ability to lead the Druids yet willing to give everything she has and more.

If you have followed this series since the Dark Sword origins, you'll be so pleased to see the Warriors return! They have been missed and are woven seamlessly back into this cast. This book is a stand alone so don't be afraid to dive on in. But if you're new to the series, you'll finish this book and immediately want to find out where and how it all began.. trust me, it's an incredible trip!!!!

My only pang is that this was the first book (that i can remember) without even one scene with my favorite Fae. While i understood the obvious decision to show that deliberate break... i missed her presence terribly.

Only a great writer can do that.... Thanks Donna!

Another solid installment in this world that I’ll start my review with the following note: If this is your first adventure into the Reaper world (or this universe) it may be a little bit overwhelming. There is a lot of back story, characters, drama, and romance that lay in the pages before those of this book. I’m sure you can read this standalone, but you’ll miss all the great nuance that’s thrown in. I’d recommend starting wayyyyyy back at the beginning, but know that can seem daunting.

This story is finally Balladyn’s redemption. He has been the good guy, the bad guy, the sort of good guy again, and now is finding his place among the Reapers. As a bit of an oddball because of his history, made especially awkward by his ex being the mate of the Dragon Kings’ leader, he has been understandably standoffish. Rhona is in an unusual spot herself. She’s the leader of the Skye druids, but feels unqualified for the position, not being a magical powerhouse herself. Upon arriving to a standard meeting, she’s attacked and somehow summons none other than Balladyn himself. How? Well, I think I’m still confused about that, but here we are!

Balladyn does the typical martyr act and throws all his sins on the table to allow Rhona to reject him before anything starts. Lucky for us, she doesn’t, so we get some good sizzle along with the larger storyline. We get some nudging for the Aisling and X story, but what we really attack (haha) is Lena, the head of the big baddies. Combining all their baggage seems to work both magically and romantically for these two, so we are gifted with a huge battle in the final act. While we still have one more book in the series to tie up loose ends, this was a good step forward overall.

This series is 15 books deep, and the world it lives in has countless other books - and somehow, Donna Grant continues to keep me interested and wanting to read more. This book, in particular, is one I have been hoping for. Balladyn is a favorite character within the series - he's been good, bad, and just about everything in between. The other thing Donna Grant does so so well is redeem heroes. Although - I am not sure Balladyn needed much anymore! Rhona is the leader of the Skye Druids - she is relatively new in that role (considering the last leader held the position for a very long time. She's still questioning her role within the group. When she is attacked and Balladyn is drawn to find her in a way that shouldn't be possible - everything shifts.

Balladyn and Rhona are pretty special together. We already known most of their individual backstories from other books, but getting their perspective on what happened to them is fascinating. They are also really perfect for each other. I loved their deep connection and how neither really questioned it at any point. Even though their relationship goes from 0-60 in like seconds - it definitely worked in the context of this world and this story.

I loved this story and it definitely stood out among the recent books in the series. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the characters in the upcoming spinoff that focuses on the Skye Druids. Do you need to read the rest of the series to appreciate this one? Not really - but this probably isn't the place to start - there is just a lot of history to unpack.

I received this as an ARC via NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

Dark Alphas Command: Every time I start reading one of Donna Grants books I can not put them down! Donna Grant’s amazingly wonderful imagination takes us on another hunt to dismantle and destroy the Fae Others! Finally Balladyn has found his place with the Reapers with even more power then meets the eye.

Balladyn is drawn from the safe haven of Death’s Realm to an unknown source but doesn’t know what to expect at the other end. Rhona the new Druid Leader is severely injured by a mysterious enemy she didn’t see coming! Balladyn unbeknownst to him gets to her to help and then they are inseparable from this point on. They must work together to find out exactly what the Fae Others are up to and why they are so connected that they cannot resist each other.

This is book 15 in the Reaper books and will leave you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next! This amazing book takes us on a journey with these two characters and their undeniable attraction with each other. Together will Rhona finally get the answers she seeks and will Balladyn be able to destroy the Fae Others you will have to read and find out.

All I can say is Donna Grant you are an amazing Author you always nail it. I cannot wait to see what happens next! I am giving this book 5 stars Donna Grant’s books are so easy to read and if you haven’t read her books before this one will certainly leave you wanting more. Pre order or buy now you will not be disappointed I am so looking forward to all the future novels in any genre as Donna’s many different stories continue.

Thank you so much Donna Grant for taking our imaginations on this new adventure.

Finally, Balladyn’s long awaited story is here and it was worth the wait!!! Balladyn ‘s character was unique and intriguing throughout the series. When we first met Balladyn, he was a Dark Fae, who eventually, became the King of the Dark Fae. Balladyn was guilty of terrible acts, but there was always something about him that made you want to know is story. Although dark, Balladyn was a good King and had the eye of Erith (death, ruler of the Reapers), so when Balladyn was betrayed and killed, Erith offered to make him a Reaper. Balladyn agreed and pledge his loyalty to Erith and the Reapers, but he felt something was missing. One morning, Balladyn woke in terror and felt a pull so strong; he knew he needed to leave the realm to find what was pulling him. With Erith’s approval, he left and followed the force to a Druid, Rhona, the Leader of the Druids, who was injured and near death. Due to Balladyn’s extensive library, during his life time, he was able to pull from one of the books and use the information to keep Rhona alive, until he was able to get her to the Druids.
Balladyn and Rhona realized they had a connection that reached though time and space, but neither could explain How? or Why? Balladyn had many skeletons in his closet and did not believe he deserved happiness, but leaving Rhona’s side, was not an option. Together, along with the help of the Warriors, their Druids, and the Reapers they were able to uncover the truth, which lead to a battle that also included the Dragon Kings. WOW…What an awesome Read!!! If you are looking for a Great PNR, I highly recommend this book, but I strongly suggest reading the entire series.

We have been on tenterhooks for a fair few books now, waiting for Balldyn to finally get the that he thoroughly deserves. The man was betrayed twice after all and he needs a HEA!

The story starts with a bang, Balladyn is tugged from Death's realm towards Earth but no one should be able to reach him. On arrival, he and the Reapers find Rhona, Cheif Druid from Skye in mortal peril. They manage to save her but this is just the beginning of the complex story weaving the Reapers and the Druids ever closer.

The Six, and Lena in particular, are growing ever stronger and are now trying to turn the Druids from Skye, some of the strongest Druids alive, to their way of thinking. More attempts are made on Rhona and Balladyn but who is the true target of the Six?

Balladyn has ricocheted between betrayed Guard of the light Fae, to tortured POW of the Dark, to working his way up the chain of command and eventually becoming King of the Dark, before again being betrayed! Rhona battles with her feeling of inadequacy. She feels that she is nothing special and that the former leader must have erred when he chose her as his successor.

Another fabulously epic battle ensues with not oly the Reapers and Druids allying but also the MacLeod Druids and Warriors, and the Dragon Kings! With all that firepower surely the outcome cis guaranteed? But there are twists and turns and you'll be left demanding to know more!

Xanaeth and Aisling should be up next and this is another couple who truly deserve a HEA!

If ever there was an anti-hero that everyone loves, it’s Balladyn. Even when he was a not-so-nice character I think we all have been rooting for his redemption and HEA.

Dark Alpha’s Command is his book and it’s a rollercoaster. He’s been a good guy, betrayed and turned into a bad guy, had his heart broken through unrequited love and then stabbed in the back (literally) and “killed”. Thankfully, Death saves him and gives him a choice to serve her as one of her Reapers.

He is forcibly called to Earth by a powerful source. He finds the new leader of the Druids, Rhona at death’s door. He uses magic he never knew he had to slow the bleeding form multiple wounds and transports her back to Skye for healing.

He and Rhona as well as characters from other books in the series join forces to search out the betrayer that caused Rhona’s attack as well as combine their magic to try to defeat the Others who are out to destroy the Dragon Kings and Humankind to rule Earth.
Amid all these events, Balladyn and Rhona discover they are mates, and their journey together is fraught with obstacles and danger. What emerges when the two of them combine is something very powerful and brand new. They will need this power to ultimately defeat the great evil that threatens to destroy them.

Wonderful book! Donna has done it again! There is one more book in this series, but Donna has another spin-off in this same world that will continue her delightful stories with some of these characters, plus all new ones! I can’t wait!

"Balladyn started as a Light Fae warrior, who was tortured and ended up becoming the King of the Dark before being betrayed again. He's now a Reaper who isn't sure of his place or his purpose.

Rhona is the leader of the Skye Druids, chosen by their former leader. While powerful and dedicated she doubts herself and questions her decisions. Imposter system at its finest.

When Rhona is attacked and dying Balladyn feels an overwhelming compulsion to respond to her call across the realms. The caveat is she never called to him. He gets to her just in time to save her life. Once together Balladyn doesn't want to leave her side and is determined to protect her. The connection to be together takes over and they quickly fall in love.

The Six have set their eyes on the Skye druids and defeating the Reapers once and for all. It will take Rhona, Balladyn, the Reapers and others to uncover the traitor(s) and the plot and save Rhona from assassination.

I liked these two together and once their connection was revealed things started to fall together rather quickly. We also get more tidbits about Xaneth. I loved seeing past characters getting involved, and look forward to where this series will go with the integration. I am however getting a little fatigued that the final resolution is put off again, but I still enjoy Grant's writing.

A Light Fae warrior who became the King of the Dark and then is chosen to be a reaper. Balladyn’s destiny as a warrior has empowered him to become something much much more. If anyone deserves an epic promotion and a happily ever after it’s Balladyn. His story began in many of the Dark Kings and throughout them all, we witness his redemption. Rhona says it best when she says, “I see a good man who was dealt several hard blows, yet you found your footing each time and kept going.” If that doesn’t sum up the kind of man Balladyn is then maybe honorable will. And boy was he rewarded by finally finding his true love.

Rhona and Balladyn are so beautiful together. Their souls recognize each other’s the instant they met, and we get to discover right along with them why that is. Why their trust and honesty with each other makes it where they allow themselves to depend on one another without doubt or question.

Together they prepare for an epic battle, where Donna brings back all of our favorites from MacLeod Castle. We are briefly reintroduced with some of the most powerful Druids and their Warriors! If that isn’t too enough the Dragon Kings and their Druids join the fun. This is probably my favorite redemption story/story from the Dark World. If it’s the first one you’re reading you’ll love all the other series! And if you’ve been there since the beginning you’ll smile and stress as is the norm when reading Donna Grant. Well done.

A story worth waiting for…
When Balladyn first appeared in a book in Donna Grant’s Dark World saga, I don’t think anyone expected to root for this character. He was cruel to Rhi and so many of us devoted readers could easily decide to hate him for this reason. But we were all wrong – we found out his tragic story and slowly we fell for him. Each time he showed up in one of Donna Grant’s stories, I wondered if that chapter of his tale would lead to his true destiny. Ms. Grant kept us hoping and guessing for many years across many tales. Now, we finally know his destiny was a Skye Druid.
Rhona is the new leader of the Skye Druids, appointed by Corann himself. She does not believe he chose wisely, but maybe Corann and the Ancients knew what they were doing. Somehow, when she had been gravely injured, Balladyn was drawn to her, compelled into action, not knowing what, where or who was pulling him across the realms, to the point he could ignore Death.
This story was one many of us waited for because we all wanted Balladyn to get his own book. Not only did Donna Grant gives us the story that her readers, and Balladyn himself, deserved, but she did it all while setting up another series that I know will be just as addictive as the rest of the Dark World. Even if this is the first book of hers you read, I am sure you will be sucked in just as much as those of us who have been along for the ride. And what an enjoyable ride it has been.

Balladyn and Rhona meet when Balladyn rescues Rhona. This feeling of need comes over him to go investigate, he knows nothing other than he needs to go. He comes upon Rhona, near death and brings her to her home where her fellow Druids heal her.

Rhona leads the Skye Druids and was assaulted when she goes to Belfast for a meeting, assaulted by someone very powerful! She nor Balladyn can understand why he was called to her. Is it fate or evil?

Balladyn knows deep down that Rhona's assault was not a random attack and refuses to leave her. As they spend more time together, feelings develop How can this be? They live far from one another, nothing permanent could be for them. The Druids and Reapers try to figure out the puzzle...

Why was Rhona attacked? What was the point? Why has Balladyn become involved? Will they survive the evil descending upon them?

Rhona is very insecure, doesn't feel she deserves her role as leader. Balladyn and the Druids see her leadership skills and her power clearly. You clearly see Rhona's growth in this story. You see her self confidence grow as the situation develops.

I have always loved Balldyn and couldn't wait for his story, it was magical. The connection he and Rhona have is wonderful and he supports whatever she decisions she makes. She in turn respects his opinions.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy.

I have been waiting and waiting for this book!!! I was beyond ready for Balladyn to get his story, and boy does he!! This man has been through so many different stories and touched so many lives in these stories (whether good or bad) that it was like waiting for Ulrik's story all over again! Ever hopeful that he would get a HEA all while understanding where his head really was during everything. And in no way does this story disappoint! He is drawn to Rhona, the new leader of the Skye druids. And he does what he must to not only save her but to protect her. All while figuring out what exactly is going on. I loved that not only do we get his story and a more complete back story for him, we also got to see characters from the Warriors brought into this world more fully! This story not only brought about an understanding by him on the things that happened to him and knowing it led him to exactly where he needed to be, but it also brought Rhona to understand why she was chosen to lead the Sky druids. That there is more to her than even she, herself, could ever see. I love that apart, they are not whole and happy-but together they are fierce, loving, and strong! This was the perfect way for him to not only get a HEA, but to also get his redemption! Now the wait begins for the last Reaper book-Aisling and Xaneth!
