At a private hospital facility in the quiet village of Riberon, party preparations are underway for a celebrity patient, former ballet dancer Enzo Roche. With gifts arriving and the guests excited, the day is turning out to be perfect.

However, as the celebration gets underway, an elderly woman collapses and is pronounced dead a short time later. With Coroner Paul Theron on vacation, his relief plans an early start to the weekend and hurriedly cites the cause as an epileptic seizure. When a second death follows, that of healthy hospital orderly Raymond Verdin, vigilant doctor Brijesh Singh connects the cases and calls in the police.

Mallery, Hobbs, and the team soon find themselves running around in circles looking for a murder suspect with a very unusual modus operandi, but can they stop the poisoner before he or she strikes again?

A murder thriller equally as good as any Agatha Christie

I have read all of A.J’s books, and have especially enjoyed the Mallory and Hobbs series. I love it in a series where not only the mystery is engaging but I am tantalised as to the development of the characters and their relationships, and this is not exception – loved it.
Essentially this novel has less action than the previous books in the series, but is more than adequately compensated for with cerebral complexity, red herrings and wonderful false trails, and new characters that are well formed and, intriguing. Not least, Enzo, a dancer who had an accident and finds himself in a psychiatric hospital following a nervous breakdown.
It is in the hospital that the plot mainly takes place, reminding me of classic Christie plots and mysteries. Two people are poised on the occasion of Enzo’s birthday, a dodgy chocolate cake. But, Enzo does not like chocolate… was the poisoner targeting someone else and was all of this a tragic accident?
The murder detectives of Bordeaux, France, led by the suave Parisian, Mallory and the acerbic Yorkshireman sergeant, Hobbs, and their eccentric team investigate – loved it.
No more plot spoilers, except to say, I am ordinarily a slow reader but finished Enzo over 2 days – I wholeheartedly recommend this book and the whole series – 5 stars.

Having loved all previous books, opening Enzo was like saying hello to an old friend. The team are back, trying to solve a double murder at a local sanitorium. Can Mallery and his team uncover the mystery that surrounds the hospital?

Once again, the author has delivered, cleverly knowing how to leave you hanging at the end of a passage of the story, forcing you to keep going.

I particularly loved the relationship between Fran and Maurice, the blossoming attraction under threat from Mallery as he seeks answers.

It's not often that I feel genuinely sad at the end of a book, but I did with Enzo, knowing it's the final part of their story. I will read them all again and the Mallery and Hobbs series would make a perfect TV adaptation. Just brilliant.

Couldn’t believe I hadn’t finished the series!
I love this too.
It’s a great series with Max & Jack.
Set in beautiful France and surrounding a fabulous descriptive village.
This book was based around a famous male ballet dancer and the care in a hospital he has ended up in.
That’s not all though. Oh no!
Lots to get you involved with and I am sad it’s the last book in the series. But so pleased with how it ended.
Excellent read
