This is a valuable book for anyone who diligently reads Holy Scripture. If you have not encountered seemingly contradictory statements in the Bible then you're not reading much.
As the author states on page 167 of the work: "We come to true wisdom by respecting the contraries and living in the tension created by them, not by embracing one at he expense of the other."
We all have heard ministers or priests who clap onto one verse and run with the doctrine they input to that verse without checking the whole of Scripture to determine the fullness that God intends. Our charge as believers is to receive and hold dear (not dissect) all the Truth laid out for us in Scripture.
Dr. Rayburn tackles profound subjects like the Trinity, the Incarnation, Divine Sovereignty and Human Freedom, Biblical Ethics and others. You'll work hard as you read this literate author but your honest effort to unpack this book will be richly rewarded.
This is a landmark book that should receive a wide readership!
Wonderful: "...given the fact that the Bible regularly presents us with polarities, we must rest content with the "contraries" we encounter in Holy Scripture, alert to our temptation to subordinate one to the other or, worse, ignore or redefine one at the expense of the other. This is the biblically appointed means to restore to us the full set of biblical convictions, when we are all far too used to picking and choosing between them."
This is the book I have been hoping to read. For a long time I have been thinking about paradox and seeming inconsistencies in the Bible. I looked for a book to give me some help in understanding why there is so much of this in the Bible and what to do with it. This book is awesome and what I learned will help me read the Bible with more understanding.
