Výkřiky v temnotě

Rate this book

Something is always going on.

Just when you think there is no way this story can possibly go on,it does.
Very clever writing. Some clever twists and turns. Nonstop action.
I find myself thinking,"Well played,Ms.Coates. Well played." It definitely keeps you on your toes.

You know those couples that are like;

" I love you ."
"I love you more ."
" NO I LOVE YOU YOU MORE."

Clare and Doran just say it different 😂;

Dorran : " I'm going to die for you ,so you can walk out of here alive ."

Clare ; " no I'm going to throw myself to the hollows ."

Dorran * throws himself to the hollows *

They just had me dying the entire time . 😂

Book 2! We pick up right where we left off and learn a little bit more about what is causing the apocalypse.

I’d give this a 3.75 but edged up to a 4. I listened to this as an audiobook through Hoopla but I’m not super impressed with the narrator.

As we continue the second book in the series, there seems to be a few things that don’t quite line up. Like, how is she madly in love in just 2-3 weeks. I would have liked a little more relationship building. That would have made the story so much better.

The creatures are gnarly and I appreciate some of the descriptions but the physicality of some of them seem elementary. This isn’t TWD or The Last of Us level of zombie style creatures(which I would have loved) and I don’t expect a copy by any means, but the things like sprouting multiple legs pulls me out of the story. It’s no longer believable for me.

I absolutely loved SECRETS IN THE DARK! Darcy Coates never ceases to amaze me in that every book I read from her, I love a little more than the last. And this series is surely becoming one of my very favorites!

The story of Clare and Dorran continues in unimaginable ways in this second novel in the series. There’s unstoppable suspense and edge-of-your seat terror that will make it almost impossible to put the book down. Again, you come to realize no one writes so vividly about winters like Darcy Coates does! And as always, she brilliantly interjects humor even during the darkest of moments.

Darcy’s writing is so good that subtle movements and gestures from our protagonists speak more than words ever could. You really get to know Clare and Dorran well through these actions, learning so much about them beyond what words can convey. Dorran and Clare are endearing and adorable! You can’t help but fall in love with them and root for them with your whole heart! By the end of this second book in the series, you feel as if you’re a part of their lives, suffering and fighting right along with them. The story is so real and the emotions so visceral, it’s as if you’re immersed in it and in their treacherous journey. You want to just reach into the pages and help them any way you can!

Incredible detail in Darcy’s writing makes it so you can almost see and hear the action as it terrifyingly plays out on the pages. The barn scene — oh my gosh!! I’m not going to give any spoilers, but it reminded me of the fear I felt while watching The Walking Dead. Clare and Dorran are immersed in a world unrecognizable and all but deserted.

As I was finishing SECRETS IN THE DARK, my heart-rate was increasing so much that I thought my heart might burst. The ending is intense, to put it mildly, and promises a fabulous and unputdownable Book 3!! Five (no, ten!!) enthusiastic stars!

My thanks to Poisoned Pen Press, Darcy Coates and Netgalley. To be honest, I had somehow put Ms. Coates into a category with Willow Rose, and all her bullshit writings. I was doing Ms. Coates a major disservice! This book, hell, this story is the bombdigitty! I need more! Now! This thing. "Story, characters and atmosphere." It got me! Truly, this stuff hit me. Please send more! My one and only complaint, is probably nothing that most would snarf about, but since it's me,.I will!😤 I never had a sense of place. I am just one of those who needs a who, what, when, where and why! Sometimes this felt like England, then suddenly the U.S. Then again, maybe Australia. I hate that! I read books in my bedroom. My bedroom is huge! I have maps on the walls, and even the ceilings. It's weird, I know, but it's also who I am. Everything I can't fit on the walls, I've got in maps in my nightstand. Countries! Yes. Also, the cities, and streets in those countries. "I can fold up a map like nobodies business!" So, I did love this story! I now need more! But, the "where"? I realise it's maybe too late in the series, but damn...It's got Kilometres, feet and meters. Its hard keeping up with that. Also gardens. Gardens in America, and gardens in England are different. It's the difference between my cookie, and their biscuit! Still, even without the sense of placement, this is a 4 star book! Give it a real place, then it's 5 star.
I'm not picky about place. I know the difference between English, Australian, North American and such. Just pick one freaking language. A verbiage?

I'm not really sure how to approach this one. So I'll say what I usually do.

Darcy Coates does NOT know how to write male characters. They're all hyper capable (Dorran just happened to know how to fix a car motor when the description we're given of the cars condition says it would be a lot more than the motor being busted... We'll leave out that if the motor is damaged, there's going to be significant damage to other parts of the engine AND we'll leave out the fact that a description in "Voices in The Snow" mentioned fluids under the car) and yet completely enslaved by the female love interest. I mean, I'm sorry... But if we're in some freaky mutant zombie apocalypse and we have a place that's safe... I'm going to try battening down and keeping safe. The hell with leaving that because you're much more likely to be coming home to uncertainty IF you come home. And that is a huge if.

The dialogue is another issue in literally all of her books.

It is WAY too clear that she reads a lot of romance novels. "Darling" could practically replace Clare's actual name according to Dorran (and most of her male characters). The only characters who sound like people, as opposed to cookie cutter stereotypes, are the women.

And that's another problem.

Clare is selfish, childish, and mercurial. She finds her aunt twisted into hollowdom and tells Dorran to kill her... Then holds it against him. That could be a good character development moment... If it lasted longer than four pages.

Theee is no development for the characters. They don't act. They simply react. They don't grow. They don't learn. They're saved by a damn deus ex machina which I can only think will be explained in the next book... And I just don't care.

I like Coates's hauntings because they're interesting. But she had this ridiculous habit of having the good guys all make it out okay and everything is mostly fine.

Again... No growth for them as people. They're like sock puppets on a set that could have been really cool.

So don't get me wrong. I do enjoy most of her stuff but I wish she would let horror be horror and drop the forced romantic interests. This series could have been amazing and it ended up being just... There.

I am really happy that I decided to continue the Black Winter series! The second book was definitely a bit better than the first but I think the first book was more of a staging of the series, the events, and the characters! I am fully into the romance in this as well which I was not totally sure I would like but surprisingly I find myself rooting for Clare and Dorran throughout the chapters!

This series is giving me very Resident Evil vibes and after two books, I still want to continue and learn where Darcy will take these characters next!

I have mixed feelings about this series.

On the one hand, I really enjoy Coates' writing and the emotions she can make me feel, but on the other hand the main character, Clare, annoys me to no end with all the stupid decisions she makes.

I'm glad we got a bit more information on the cause of the end of the world, and we also got to explore how it works.

To be honest.. I think I would have liked this story more as a standalone and I don't know whether I'll be picking up the sequel.

Alright, so as I mentioned in book one's review, I actually bought this one first believing it to be the start of the series (just from the way it was advertised at the store) so I moved on immediately from book one and I was really enjoying everything until SOMETHING happened that threw me completely. I am going to jump into spoiler territory for the next bit, so be wary!

So. Hum. After that, I took a while to get back into the book and actually put it down more often than not. I finally stayed up late last night and finished it, but some of the magic was gone. I was back into it by the end, and I'm looking forward to the third book after all. First time in a long time that something so random could throw me for a loop, is all.

Three stars, but I'm hopeful for redemption.

The first 60% of this book was harder for me to get through. I think I waited to long between books I just didn't care about the characters really. But I loved the last 40% when we really started to get answers about every th ing.

I have been waiting to read Black Winter #2 since finishing the first book months ago! It did not disappoint. We pick right back up with Dorran and Claire trying to keep the house secure from the hollow. They are running low on supplies.

Claire has finally made contact with her sister Beth and learned she is trapped in her underground bunker, running out of air. Beth begs Claire to stay in the relative safety of Winterbourne but Claire could never forgive herself for not attempting to save her sister. So starts Dorran and Claire's journey away from home.

The twists and turns in this installment were making me crazy. Written in true Coates' fashion my heart was thundering in my chest as Dorran and Claire attempt to outsmart and outrun the hollow. Extremely hard to put down.

Secrets in the Dark is a unique take on something that's been done a thousand times. The pacing throughout is excellent. If you are a fan of suspense, mysteries or supernatural this is the book for you. I can't wait for part 3 to be released!

Secrets in the Dark is book 2 of what is to be a 4 part series. I would recommend reading the first, Voices in the Snow, before you read this. It would still be enjoyable to go back and read the first after but you would lose a lot of the suspense of the story which is half the fun!

Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and Net Galley for my ARC to read and review. Also thank you Darcy for continuing to write such amazing books!

This book takes place immediately where Voices in the Snow ends.
Clare and Dorran are relishing in the quietness of Winterbourne Hall.
Riding the slight victory that they had at the end of book 1, but trying to secure the house from the hollow ones.
They’re also running low on supplies, which is worrisome. When, finally, Beth makes contact through the radio. After so long, Clare had gotten in touch with Beth. Just like a normal older sister would, Beth’s main concern is making sure Clare is safe.
Clare lets her know where she is and that she has been with Dorran this whole time. Beth lets her know she’s in her bunker, but her generator is down. The hollows also like the radios noise and it attracts them to her bunker.
Clare immediately wants to bring Beth back to Winterbourne Hall with them, but Beth says no, she wants Clare to worry about herself and stay safe.
Dorran and Clare decide that they’ll try and bring Beth to Winterbourne, but they don’t know how long it’ll take them to prepare for this. However, when a very distressed call comes in from Beth, telling them she’s running out of oxygen, they decide their plans need to change.
They decide to leave the comfort and “safeness” of Winterbourne Hall to go and save Beth. This journey will not be easy, but it’s life or death for Beth.

Wow, wow, wow! This was such a great second book. I loved the first book so much and couldn’t wait to get my grubby little hands on this one.
Well, now I can’t wait for books 3 & 4.
I’ve told you once and I’ll tell you again, I am not a fan of apocalyptic horror, I never find it scary or that interesting. But jeeze, this book keeps me on my toes the whole time.
Every twist and turn I never see coming and it throws me for a loop.
Once again, I love Clare and Dorran. They’re relationship is so pure and sweet. I know some might not love the romance aspect in this story, but it really makes me love the story so much more. There’s something about seeing two people love each other and try to overcome such a horrific experience together.
It does make me nervous at every corner thinking one of them might die, but it keeps me reading to find out because I need to know!
You actually find out more about the hollow ones and the origin of them, which I found fascinating, if not a little more complex (for my little brain) and not what I was expecting. The ending....I need the next book now. 😭 I need to know what happens next, because that cliffhanger was intense.
I also need every Darcy Coates book asap, she’s an awesome writer.

Apocalyptic horror is not normally my jam. But this series is so good! I've grown to adore fierce Clare and silently stubborn Dorran and am cheering them on in their fight against the mindless flesh-eating creatures that seem to never die. This book has some crazy twists to add to the tension. The author has added a sweet romance to temper the horror and make my hopeless romantic heart happy. The ending made me clap for joy and eager to read the next book.

Bit too much romance for my liking. Just bring on the horror! Too predictable - the Hollows find them, they fight, they get hurt, they care for each other, tell each other they love one another, they find a place to rest. The next day they do the same thing over and over again.

Despite my disappointment with what felt like a sudden genre change in previous book I genuinely enjoyed this one. Darcy has successfully managed to create genuinely terrifying creatures and I actually felt a tightness in my chest, and discomfort in my stomach whilst reading, something I’ve never felt with similar books.

My only issue, and I felt it in the first one aswell, is that the relationship between Dorran and Clare feels incredibly forced. It doesn’t flow smoothly, and hearing Dorran talk to Clare often makes me cringe. Unfortunately as a main character Clare too has moments in which her language and way of talking comes across as unnatural. I find my self hoping that new characters are introduced in the next books as hopefully this will become less of an issue.

At the end of the first book I wasn’t too sure I was going to continue with the series if this book didn’t grip me, but this book has engaged my interest and I will absolutely give the next one a shot.

Let me start off by saying this book was good, not great but good. The ending made the whole book worth reading. I am having a hard time caring for these characters. Clare is self serving and kind of dumb. Dorran on the other hand is so selfless and always doing things for Clare. I really don't know how they have made it this far. They never see red flags and do really dumb things like leaving the car to sleep on a boat. I don't know why one person drove while the other slept and then switched. Not staying still seems to be the best way to go but they are always stopping. Someone has to tell Clare point blank before she gets what's being said. At the end when Dorran is like go without me and she is like no, I should have felt something but I just didn't. I can see why Beth was always checking on Clare because the girl is not bright.

This is the second book in the series, and I am completely captivated. I must say, this tale is incredibly well-crafted, and you will not regret diving into it. In addition to the sheer horror and mayhem, there are moments that will pull at your heartstrings, enhancing the overall narrative. I'm moving on to the next one.

Action orientated survival horror which builds upon the 'Stillness' event from the first book in the series. Highly recommend reading VOICES IN THE SNOW first otherwise the story won't feel as impactful. Does lend itself towards a romance/horror kind of vibe with Doren and Clare's relationship a point of emphasis throughout.

3.5 stars. This did have some good twists and interesting new information, but for most of it I didn’t feel quite as invested as I did in the first book.

Bumping this up to 4 stars. I love this series and it develops so well!

This became one of my favorite Darcy Coates books of all time. Not only did this read like a George Romero Dawn of the Dead adventure, but this was truly spectacular and I could not put it down. The action begins quickly and it doesn’t relent until then end of this almost 500 page story!

If you are a fan of Darcy Coates than you are going to love Secrets in the Dark- Black Winter Book 2! Secrets in the Dark takes off in full force where Voices in the Snow left off. (Book 1). It is very fast paced, Coates weaves the story with absolute perfection, and barely gives you time to catch your breath!

The story revolves around our survivors Clare and Dorran. There is quite a bit of propulsion in this second installment of the Black Winter saga! Many questions left at the end of Voices in the Snow will slowly be revealed, but there are many more questions by the end of this entry!

This review may be a shorter one, but I really do not want to divulge much. All I can say is if you have not read Voices in the Snow do so now! Following pick up your copy of Secrets in the Dark! This is a perfect shut-in read during this troubling COVID-19 crisis.

Overall, Darcy’s writing is fun, exciting, descriptive, tantalizing, and very intelligent! I could not put this book down! I am so excited for the forthcoming third and fourth entries of the Black Winter saga! Coates executed the climax of Secrets in the Dark perfectly in my opinion! It definitively leaves you wanting more!

I would like to express my gratitude to #netgalley, #poisonedpenpress, and #darcycoates for the opportunity to read this ARC! I would also like to thank Brandy Hinkey, my girlfriend/administrator of the Facebook group Book Nerds, for introducing me to Darcy’s works! If you would like to join an amazing group that reviews and shares books here is a link to Book Nerds. https://www.facebook.com/groups/73539.... We always love welcoming newcomers to the group! We would love to see you there!

This book was an amazing continuation of the Black Winter series after the ending of Voices in the Snow! I give Secrets in the Dark 4 1/2 🌟’s out of 5 🌟’s! There were a few minor details that I questioned if they would actually be plausible at all, but it did not take away from the story. I look forward to reading more of Darcy Coate’s books!

Ok so first off Clare is sort of dry as dirt, seems to be a complete idiot, and just keeps completely fucking over Dorran. (Makes him kill her aunt then calls him a murderer and is pissed at him? Grow up.) I still think Dorran has something fucking sketchy going on... but you're telling me after 800 pages of them being stuck with each other AT THE END OF THE WORLD and they are now in love and engaged and basically married since there's no priests...... That they STILL shower separately, won't change in front of each other, and won't fuck? Please. I'm still eating this shit up though so I'll keep reading but just..... Darcy please. Most unrealistic thing about this sci fi horror end of the world book is that they aren't fucking yet. Clare should also seriously be dead I'm so sick of seeing her act up and Dorran miraculously have enough energy and random skills and perseverance to keep putting up with her bullshit.
