A royal bastard. A palace maid. They've always been friends, but can they be more?

Delerat BeVelor knows his role in life. As the bastard nephew of the king, he is supposed to be thankful for the opportunities presented to him. He’s destined to spend his days working to repay his uncle’s so-called generosity.

The one thing Del wants for himself is Roena, a childhood friend who becomes a palace maid. He’s loved her for years, but has never dared to admit his feelings. He wants to carve a place for her in his life, but why would she ever choose him, when his magically alluring half-incubus brother is an alternative?

With his livelihood dependent on the king’s whims, all Del can offer her is his heart.

Will it be enough?

Jen Lynning never outgrew her love of fairy tales. (She may have studied German just so she could read the Brothers Grimm in the original.) When she wasn’t reading about life in a magical world, she was imagining it. Eventually she decided to start writing her own stories where magic and romance meet.

Jen lives in Northern Virginia with her two cats, who make their own contributions to her writing by walking across the keyboard, and her bird, who offers commentary on the whole process.

Short, sweet, and a lovely look at Del and Ro's relationship.

Basic Plot: Childhood friends Roena and Delerat become lovers.

There really wasn't much to this short. There was a hint of a fantasy world. A hint of politics. Not much happened, though. The writing was decent, but there just wasn't much here to grab my brain.

This was a good short story, however there was a couple inconsistencies in the writing. It was very fast paced, though I was disappointed with the ending, as it was a little anticlimactic.

For a story this short, every word has to earn its place.
Instead of exploring the parts of the world that were repeatedly hinted at being important, the story spends time elsewhere, leaving the elements I actually wanted to know about unexplored.
The prose itself also felt clunky. Nothing was actively wrong with it, but it never quite flowed, making it harder to become immersed in such a short read.
I can imagine this working better as bonus material for readers already invested in the trilogy. As a standalone prequel, it never delivered on the promise of its blurb. I finished unconvinced this was the right story to introduce readers to the trilogy.

Delerat's Wish is a heartwarming and romantic short story between Delerat and Roena.

Delerat BeVelor is the nephew of King Duirden, and Roena is the daughter of one of the castle maids. Although they are worlds apart, they have been best friend's since they were children. That friendship grew into love.

I thought this was a great introduction in the world. I will definitely be reading the next book. I am so interested in Khiran and what it means to be half incubus.

Meh. Nothing is described, and I only imagined a sort of gaslight fantasy setting because of the cover. There was nothing to make me think otherwise, but nothing confirmed that setting either. I know it's a short story, and a prequel, but some descriptions would be a good thing. There's none.

Cute little very short introduction to the characters, it did its job and now I’m adding the other books in the series to my TBR.
