Facing boredom after his long-postponed knee surgery, Jack volunteers at Fitz Morton Manor to serve as steward, chatting with visitors about the long history of the house. And when the retired volunteer Cyril Roebuck is found dead in the Great Hall, one morning, it seems at first that the dear old man must have suffered a heart attack. But the room was locked from the inside – and it quickly becomes clear that Cyril could not have bolted it. Soon Jack and Sarah are confronting the odd mystery of the locked room...and what must be – in fact – a case of foul play.
Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.
Recovering after knee surgery and having to take things easy, Jack was enjoying doing a stint of volunteering as a steward at Fitz Morton Manor to ease the dreaded boredom. Sarah was acting as chauffeur until Jack was able to drive and as they approached the manor house Jack noticed several things that weren’t quite right. He knew his new friend Cyril, another steward, was responsible for getting things set for visitors arriving, and Cyril had been on night duty so he should have been there already. On closer inspection of the property a body is discovered which, in the first instance, seems to be a natural death, but the circumstances don’t quite stack up…
These easy to listen to and varied short stories are well plotted and, more often than not, quite unpredictable. The main characters, Jack and Sarah, are well defined and extremely likeable, their relationship natural and realistic. Neil Dudgeon does a great job as narrator, with very good characterisations. The accent and personality he gives Jack makes him very engaging. I never get the impression the books are written by two authors.
Cherringham is one of my favorite series. I adore the characters and always look forward to solving a crime with them. Counting the days until the next installment!
Love this series! Each book can be read over two days usually and the keep you on the edge of your seat at times. Every time I read one of these books it’s like reconnecting with old friends. Just wish Jack and Sarah would take the next step forward with their relationship.
Lukijana Neil Dudgeon. Mukavan leppoisa murhatarina. Tarina soljuu miellyttävän lukijan lukemana. Jännitystä saa tästä etsiä, mutta sehän ei taida olla tarkoituskaan. Lopun ratkaisuhetket olivat suorastaan hulvattomat.
I think I have worked out who did what; but then again I'm not bothered really. I just really enjoy these books and can't wait for the next one. Keep in writing guys please.
Jack is recovering from surgery and working as a volunteer. He’s enjoying working at the historic mansion until he finds a friend dead in a locked room.
I love these episodes and the adventures of the characters!! These episodes are wonderful on audio and such good mysteries. If you haven’t listened, you are missing out on a great mystery series!!!
Never a let down for a feel good, exciting book with Jack and Sarah. This one was crazy with an "Abbott and Costello" bit of fun. AS IN : Who has the original?. You just have to read and enjoy the shenanigans.
