The Complete Works of Stephen Charnock #5

The Works of Stephen Charnock, Volume 5

Rate this book
VOLUME FIVE contains a further nineteen discourses. By way of contrast with the earlier volumes – most of which are based on texts from the New Testament – five of the discourses here draw on texts from the Old Testament Scriptures. Many of the topics addressed are of perennial interest to all Christians: the necessity of Christ’s death, and the necessity of his exaltation; Christ’s intercession; God in Christ as the object of faith; afflictions; mortification; the stability of the church; delight in prayer; the sins of the regenerate; man’s enmity to God; and the pardon of sin. The set closes with a useful Index of subjects and persons mentioned, and an Index of Texts.

It is my goal to read the Complete Works of Stephen Charnock in 2020. Volume five was outstanding! Volume 1 and 2 was his opus- The Existence and Attributes of God. Volume three is a his introduction to detailed systematic theology in discourse form. In volume four Charnock continues to share a detailed systematic theology covering many aspects of the life and work of Christ. Volume five continues his discourses on much that is pertinent to the Christian life. I was delighted with the final two discourses that were described as some of his rarest works. The first one, Man's Enmity With God, is a complete treatise on the total depravity of man and should be read by all!
This last year, I have grown to love Charnock's writings. They are pastoral and written in such a way that both the layman and pastor will be edified. He has the unique ability and gifting of a teacher to put very difficult theology into simple and enjoyable terms. You will not be disappointed with the depth, clarity, and profundity of these books.
