Mothman: Return to Point Pleasant

Rate this book
Between November 1966 and December 1967, the small Appalachian town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia was stalked and harassed by a terrifying entity dubbed, The Mothman. The sightings came to an abrupt — and suspicious — end after the bridge that connected Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed, killing forty-six people.

Over a half a century has passed since the tragedy in Point Pleasant, when Billy Slater and his mom move to the small town, blissfully unaware of the horrific things that have cast a dark cloud over the town to this very day.

But then, in one sudden gust of unimaginable horror, the close-knit community of Point Pleasant is thrust back into the same madness, chaos and nerve-shredding fear they suffered fifty-five years earlier. Inhuman screeches erupt in the night, glowing red eyes appear in the darkness, and the town is forced to face their demons once again. But this time things are different. Evolution is inevitable.

The MOTHMAN has returned.

On December 15, 1967 the town of Point Pleasant lost 46 people when the bridge collapsed following sightings of a moth-like humanoid with glowing red eyes. The townsfolk hasn’t seen it since but they remember … when a mother and son relocate to this small town strange things begin happening and sightings of the Mothman begin to occur again … and the townsfolk are helpless as their nightmare begins all over again.

This book should belong on the shelf of all Cryptid horror lovers. It is a quick read (I read it in one night and stayed up FAR too late to finish it!). It is a great story and a lot of fun. It is more plot-driven than character driven and there were a couple of questions I would have liked to have answered but it didn’t rob me of thoroughly enjoying this work!

When I was a teenager, on Saturday mornings—channel 21 where I lived—they showed three different movies, one of which was a creature feature movie. The section that showed the creature feature was called Saturday Bizarre (if I remember correctly). This story, The Mothman: Return to Point Pleasant, brought me back to those Saturday mornings of my youth when I developed a love for sci-fi creature movies and books. Donnelly’s crisp and concise writing and cliffhanger chapters kept this story moving. I loved the history of the backstory and the whole intrigue of the Mothman itself. Some mysterious figures lurk around on the story’s sidelines for extra flavor. These almost silent characters come and go, making you wonder if they are there to help or harm, not just while reading but even afterward. Again, Donnelly proves himself as a great sci-fi writer. It is an awesome story geared for anyone interested in tall-tales surrounding sci-fi creatures, cryptids, and the unexplainable. I enjoyed my time in Point Pleasant; I believe you would too. I look forward to the next Donnelly story. Killer Scarecrow is queued up in my Kindle, ready to go. I’ll get to that one soon.

Having had a family member who was on the Silver Bridge when it collapsed, parts of this book resonated with me & the Mothman legend in that area has always fascinated me! This book may not be for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed it & recommend it!!

Billy Slater and his mom have just moved from Ohio to Point Pleasant, WV, unaware of the town's history. But that quickly changes when Billy encounters the Mothman in person. Fifty-five years after it first appeared, residents are going missing and the Mothman, as well as sightings of "Men in Black" have returned.
I'm a big fan of the Mothman, so a novella about him showing up again in Point Pleasant was definitely in the cards. While it's reasonably written, the longer it went and more certain things happened, I became less and less enthralled with the story. The Mothman was only ever a mysterious presence and harbinger of impending disaster, but in this book he's a vicious creature who attacks and kills people. And If you don't care about the author taking tremendous liberties with the Mothman legend, you might like it more than I did, but it just took me right out of the story.

Mothman Mythos Continues

Billy just moved to Point Pleasant with his mom to start a new life. Little did they know about this new places' history. Many if not all of the locals believe in the legend of a curse that brought about the Mothman. Many of the locals have had family members that died in the collapsed bridge incident of the late 60's. At first, Billy doesn't believe the stories...until he becomes one.

Enjoyed this book and it really is a very fitting sequel to the original story. I loved the extra details the author put into the Mothman. I recommend for fans of the Mothman or anything that's out of the ordinary.

Great for cryptid lovers

As someone who grew up close to Point Pleasant, and am old enough to have known about the Silver Bridge disaster, this book brings back a lot of memories. Based on the truth I hope thus book stays fiction.
Well written and quite engrossing. I highly recommend it.

The Mothmaan Tale In The Flesh...
First fiction tale I've read about the Mothman and by one of my favorite new authors - Scott Donnelly. An absorbing read that puts realistic characters within the Mothman mythos. I blew through the book in one sitting I was so captivated. If you love tales about cryptid creatures - you'll love this book!

I adored this book. As a huge Mothman fan this was exactly the type of follow-up story I needed. Although probably not the type of thing the folks in Point Pleasant would enjoy going through again 😅

If you’re a Cryptid lover this book is definitely worth the read!

I do recall watching a movie that had a similar storyline. The Mothman appears, a bridge collapses. People die.
But in this book, that's only the beginning. Literally the very beginning.
Years later, Mothman returns. Is he a sign of bad things to come? Or he is the bad thing to come?

A moth that doesn't fly into the light
We have a need for more Mothman stories. I was so happy when I found this one, it really brought it. Great characters, creepiness, and with Mothman's history I knew they would be in for a wild time. Some unexpected things going on, it's just a really good read.
