"Here is the crux of the problem. Superheroes are exciting, powerful, and exciting . . . and nearly every one of them is American. I believe YOU returning to us at a historic time like this is a sign." -- British prime minister Harry Williams, pontificating to the title character

That ain't the only problem, Mr. Prime Minister. As much as I really like the reimagined character of Captain Carter - a.k.a. ace British WWII operative Peggy Carter receiving the Super-Solider Serum instead of Steve Rogers, and then following the same arc, right down to being thawed out 70 years after the war - she was ill-served by this debut volume. (A better use of time would be for the reader to just watch her animated What If . . . ? origin episode from 2021, which I believe was the flashpoint for this interpretation.) I lost interest in the tedious storyline - which attempted much to hard to be contemporary, not just in setting but more so in the attitude - after the initial chapter, disliked most of the supporting characters, and was not a fan of artist Cresta's style. (The cover art and included variants at the conclusion were great, but they were all done by different artists. The rest of the time the narrative illustrations were just dull.) Since Marvel has produced high-quality Black Widow, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel graphic novels I think Captain Carter should certainly not get the short shrift.

This was so fun omg!

So we see the origins of Peggy if she was a super soldier and she is awake after 80 years and going to Britain her home and joining STRIKE and working with the PM but when she meets her neighbor Harley who questions her mission and well her suspicions arise regarding the PM Harry and well is declared a criminal and accused of working for HYDRA, she is on the run and along with Agent Braddock and surprisingly Tony Stark, can Peggy clear her name but at what cost? Plus the revelations of who the villains really are and the fate of STRIKE/HYDRA..

I just loved this volume, one of my fav reads of the year!

Its just pure action and I like the expositions and the cool twist with Tony and giving a compelling story to Peggy and some tropes may seem similar but I loved it and also loved the whole stuff with Vampires and the villains motives, its like making something new out of the old which was awesome and giving her a cool mission and everything and challenging her ideals of what her country is and can be! Plus the art was gorgeous and each page was a *marvel* to look at! Just fantastic stuff!

I enjoyed this book. Apart from Peggy Carter getting the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers this does not follow the What If episode. I also love that this is set in modern London.

After 80 years on ice Peggy Carter has returned to London, and things seem better maybe the sacrifice she made was worth it, but when a threat arises Captain Carter needs to return. I also like the different look to a couple of other classic marvel characters.

Like said I love that this set in modern day London. I like the characters, speech and technology are all correct. I also like the home truths about British history and the politics especially the way things are today. I also liked the twist at the end. The book finishes a varent cover gallery, mix of full page and multiple covers to a page format.

Well, this was an absolutely awful let down. I love that the What If? animated show launched a whole new iteration of Peggy Carter, and a quick little mini series to play out the story of Peggy waking up in the modern world the same way Steve did makes sense on paper.

Too bad this is a stinking mess that takes the various plot beats from Steve Rogers' story and does them poorly. It's quite obvious that Kieron Gillen is the actually good writer in the Gillen/McKelvie team. Everything is so on the nose here; the plot hits every single cliche you can imagine would pop up in a story like this, and the villain's motivation made no sense whatsoever other than an attempt to have vaguely watered down commentary on something a thousand other writers have done so much better. (One cliche that really stuck in my craw was where Peggy's young black female neighbor just so happened to also have l33t hacking skillz.

As for the art...whew. That was a mess. Cresta does okay body work, but every single face in this looked weird, like they were all dolls put in a microwave and their faces began to melt off. The action scenes were fine, nothing terrible but nothing great either. The color work was serviceable. Having McKelvie himself do the covers of each issue was just rubbing salt in the wound of the artwork, however. He's SO good and his covers are fantastic.

What an all around awful disappointment of a book. Peggy deserves better.

"Captain Carter: Woman Out of Time" is a fast paced superhero tale with well developed action and suspense elements that portrays "alternate" versions of Peggy Carter, Betsy Braddock, and Tony Stark while providing insights into post-war British history and social developments. This is definitely not to be missed by Marvel fans who enjoy British Superheroes and / or alternate universe stories.

This was fun.
Peggy Carter apparently got the super soldier serum and is frozen till modern times..
The story was a little predictable..but the British setting and some jabs at British society problems were well said.

Didn't expect to like this as much as I did! I don't know if there's another volume coming out, but I would definitely read it.

*Spoiler alert!*

I have come to comics a bit later in life than childhood, primarily due to the Marvel movies and TV series, but better late than never. Besides, I can't resist a what-if scenario, such as the one posited by Captain Carter: Woman Out of Time, where SHIELD agent Margaret Carter takes the super soldier serum, not Steve Rogers (aka Captain America). It is Carter that is pulled out of the ice in this universe and has to adjust to the complexities of modern life in Britain.

As Captain Carter is trying to find her feet, the British Prime Minister (PM) enlists her help in countering what apparently is a resurgence of the infamous HYDRA group from the war. The national atmosphere of fear and paranoia in Captain Carter was reminiscent to me of what happened after 9/11, in particular the passing of Patriot Act-like security legislation to counter the threat of terrorism. That and the politics of civil liberties and security theater. I liked the echoes of our reality here and that this comic didn’t shy away from the political.

Harley was one of my favorite characters in this story, a self-taught computer programmer and hacker, who forces Captain Carter to take a hard look at modern Britain’s power structures and helps her to redefine the role in her own image. After all, Captain Carter is more focused on trying to do what’s right and not on her propaganda value to the PM and the nation at large. Harley helps teach Carter to be skeptical and think more critically about what her role should be in the 21st century.

Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, makes a surprise appearance in the story, albeit with a fun twist. Like the partnership of Captain America and Iron Man shown in the Avengers movies, the dynamic between Captain Carter and Iron Man was fun to watch. I would love to see this dynamic explored further in continuations of this story, because the duo only shows up in the last half of Carter, where suspicions grow that HYDRA is not behind the latest violence.

My nerd heart was made very happy by this fun, fast-paced, and political adventure. I think others who love superhero comics will love this what-if comic, even if they are relatively new to comics themselves.

I hope that there are further installments of this story. I for one welcome our Marvel multiverse overlords!

Happy reading!

Rather than dropping her in action I enjoyed her journey through the 21st century, 50 years after her death. I can see that plot getting old quickly but with an X-Men by her side it should move fast. I'm looking forward to her she facing the same old fears and prejudices as she did before she was iced and hopefully winning. I liked her in the "What If" series and this hasn't changed my opinion.

This was fun, Peggy has been showing up a lot lately and this is just what we got in the What If…? episode but better and more so Peggy in the modern day rather than Peggy in WWII. Definitely worth a read. I initially picked it up thinking it was a continuation of the What If…? episode and despite that disappointment it was good enough that I kept picking it up each month.

Love the story, it was rather short though.. The fact that the main villain comes to light in last parts of the story and it ending there felt somewhat rushed.
Would've loved to see more in this story or a sequel.

Jamie McKelvie drafts the least interesting story for Captain Carter. She's back from the ice cube and, golly, it sure seems like the British government is trying to pin crimes on her! Surprise, they're vampires.

The storytelling is dense and terrifically dull. The art is static. I couldn't name any characters besides Captain Carter, and even she is barely interesting.

Skip this one!

Piggy-backing the popularity of the 'What If?' tv series, we get a limited series about Captain Carter.

No Captain America in this universe. Peggy Carter is the woman behind the shield. She fought HYDRA and the Nazi menace of the 40s. She's the one that was frozen in ice for 80 years. In this universe, she was found by a group of Americans/Russians/and Britons..ultimately going back to the UK. (A UK that's written to look very much like a 'post 9/11 America'. Laws are put in place for the benefit of the population, but the truth behind them might be darker than we'd want to think. Captain Carter has to find her place in this modern world and fight to protect a people that think what they're told.
--------
This is a great little limited series if you're curious about this character. I'm sure they'll find some more uses for her in the main universe. The art is solid and the pacing on the 5 issues is right on the money. Loved it!

Bonus: Tony Stark is a true 'Iron Man'. New take?
Bonus Bonus: Lizzie Braddock has ...purple hair (and that purple butterfly effect around her eyes)

I needed this series. I needed it injected into my veins. I’m so upset it’s a limited one because I’d read this forever. The characters are so vivid, well-drawn in all ways, and have such great relationships with each other. There are enough (VERY) low key Easter eggs and plot points that mirror other Captain America stories but they have their own purpose here.

And Peggy… what can I say about Peggy that I haven’t already? Her personality sings in this series. Everything she says is true to her voice, and all of her actions are true to her heart. This short run made me fall in love with her even further, which I never would’ve thought possible (especially considering that the Captain Carter iteration of her has never been my favorite).

I loved this, and hope to see more of it sooner rather than later.

What if Peggy got the serum, went down in 1945 and froze, and was unfrozen in current day? I really enjoyed this, both as a parallel to Cap and as her own story. I like the team she gathered along the way, and while the prime minister plot was lifted directly from Doctor Who, I enjoyed that, too. Peg misses Steve and Bucky and her Commandoes, but also has a much better sense of self than Steve ever had, and I love this ending for her. Or, well, hopefully not ENDING, I want more in this line, but I love where it left her.

Read in single issues. It was a funny reading with some nice plot twist in the 4# issue! Wished the art style was a little bit more consistent, but overall it was a nice little story.

Clearly this comic only exists because of Captain Carter's recent screen appearances, but just to confuse matters, it's one parallel over from the What If? version of the character at least; here Peggy spent her lost decades stuck in the ice like the 616 Cap, not through a portal full of tentacles. And having a protagonist who's been out of circulation for decades does allow a little more exposition than you'd normally get away with, which is handy for introducing the reader to an alternate world. Handy, too, for introducing a majority American audience to Britain's own current reckoning with the less glorious aspects of its past, and the pushback against same – which have a definite family resemblance to the US versions but, despite how much their discourse gets slathered everywhere, are not identical. Representing the reactionary/culture war side of the equation, McKelvie gives us a Boris Johnson stand-in who's recognisable, but considerably less blatant than his old mucker Gillen's over in Once & Future, and whose eventual unveiling as something worse than just an entitled dickhead barely even counts as a spoiler. Still, because this is fiction set in a fantastical world, we do at least get to see him satisfactorily punished for that, rather than holiday his way towards a lucrative retirement while his cronies have a slapfight over who gets the next turn oppressing the voter-cattle.

A pleasant surprise.

What if agent Carter was Captain Britain instead of Steve Rogers being Captain America? Waking up in the future has been rough on Carter but she is willing to try. Too bad the government is filled with a bunch of blood suckers who want to hold her back. I knew this series was going to be different, but I was not expecting the twist this story had. It was fun and easy to get into. The art was great and I liked the characters they decided to include. I know so people have a problem with Carter, so if you would like something that includes her but is separate from her old questionable position in the Marvel universe, this is a good series to pick up!

Loved the characters (especially the newly introduced ones) and references to Captain America. I like that it was addressing some current problems/misconceptions too. Story was a bit farfetched as Captain America's comics often are so I would have liked something more believable but I am still looking forward to reading more comics of our beloved Peggy as Captain Carter!

This Elseworlds story is based on the MCU What If...? animated series episode from 2021 - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_..., but doesn't follow exactly. This Captain Carter followed a more traditional "frozen in the Arctic" time gap than What If...?'s portal hopping.

It is nice to see this character getting more focus, both in this volume and in What If...? Season 2 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_If.... Her treatment in Multiverse of Madness made me so angry that that MCU film ranks at my lowest and I will leave the room for the Illuminati fight scene on any re-watch.

Anyway, what about this book?

It's a pretty basic Cap story about being used for propaganda by the government and standing up for the people of a country over the government. The parasitic British authorities have plans that are all but ripped from the headlines of our world - https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/what... - and the book goes out of it's way to note that the supervillains only needed to nudge a paranoid British public a bit to be on the brink of an Orwellian nightmare.

Oh, I also feel like robo-Tony Stark is a weird choice and a disconcerting visual image.

Let's all hope Haley Atwell gets a chance to sling her shield again in the MCU, maybe in Secret Wars?

Captain Carter: Woman Out of Time (issue 1-5) by Jamie McKelvie (Script), Marika Cresta (Art), Marvel 2022.

A reality where S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Peggy Carter took the Super-Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers is turned upside down — when the World War II hero is pulled from the ice where she was lost in action decades before! Now, Peggy struggles to find her footing in a modern world that’s gotten a lot more complicated — cities are louder, technology is smarter and enemies wear friendly faces. Can Peggy trust what she’s being told, or is someone trying to use her as a high-profile pawn in a game she doesn’t yet understand? This new Sentinel of Liberty is a shield-slinging sensation!

A limited Captain Carter series as an episode of What If? I love Peggy Carter! Re-watching the Marvel tv series as we speak. This 5 part series was just long enough to keep me entertained.
