Don't Fck Up Your Baby: The Ultimate Guide to Raising Your Newborn Brand

Rate this book
After years of industry experience and academic positions lecturing to students about creativity and branding, Joris van Dooren and Coen Luijten both began to notice some strange behaviour. Both their student and the starting entrepreneurs they were working for in their Building Better Brands course, had started to act irrationally when it came to their brands, putting in all their financial resources, discussing them non-stop, and staying up late into the night to work on them.

It almost looked a little like parenthood.

Newborn brands are just like babies to us. With the right guidance, we can raise them into something spectacular. That said, when things go wrong, we can just as easily f*ck them up.

Within these pages, we trace the development of your brand from its baby stages right up to adulthood. Just like how it takes 18 years to raise a child, we've broken down the process into 18 steps. With interactive examples and tasks to help bring your brand to life, you'll be able to watch your brand grow as you move from step to step.

It takes a village to raise a child and you'll need to juggle different tasks when starting up. But, when it comes to branding and creativity, we'll be your support system. After helping launch over 75 startups, we've refined the process to perfection. Let's start creating your brand, it will be big fun!

By the end of these 18 steps, your brand will have a personality, a style, a story - it'll be a fully formed brand. But, before we arrive there, we have to take care of our baby brand.

Are you ready for parenthood? It's one hell of a ride. Let's try not to f*ck it up.

Don't F*ck Up Your Baby is an excellent self-help book on how to strategically market your start-up at the brand level. Here, the analogy of a start-up as the baby, which is central to the book, is a playful and appealing comparison that clearly makes sense. Nonetheless, it speaks a little out of line with, for me at least, the main idea in the book: those who pay serious attention to their brand as a complement to their service or product have an edge in a competitive market. Whether you are a fresh start-up or have been around for a while, the principle remains the same. However, both will be able to grab the advantage using this book.

The 18-part roadmap, written by two experts in brand strategy, makes for a concise and manageable exercise that can be used by students as well as business owners or start-ups to make a measurable impact on business through brand strategy. Besides a plan for execution, it also makes very clear how important a strong brand strategy is in modern day economics. The roadmap is delivered in the accessible, light-hearted and humorous style of Coen Luijten and Joris van Dooren that is recognisable from their previous book, Creativity Works! Which makes it not only a very useful exercise, but also highly enjoyable and potentially binding when done with employees or colleagues.

Each step in the book is underpinned by the necessary, sometimes a bit oversimplified or concise, literature along with strong real-life examples. This gives it more the vibe of a self-help book for start-ups than a handy tool for experienced brand marketers. But, this is also where the book really seems to be aimed. If you want to make an impact with your start-up or want to bring a strategic breath of fresh air to your business, Don't F*ck Up Your Baby is an excellent tool to take big steps towards this.

Kui oled ise pusija, siis äriidee ja brändi mõtestamiseks ning pitchimiseks peaks esialgu piisama küll.

Accessible informative and at times amusing. The font used, though, undermines the legitimacy of their advice.

Very interesting book. The branding process is clearly explained. The humor makes the book easy to read. Highly recommended if you are working on a start-up!

It looks like the found the golden formula. Coen and Joris really know how to combine knowledge and humor. Don't Fck Up Your Baby is a must read for everyone who wants to begin. I can also recommend this boo for those who have already started. I put it next to my own start up and found some points of improvement.
