Hands down, this is easily becoming one of my favorite manga of all time. It's literally the most charming and perfect manga that I've read in a while. This is your sign to start this series now!
A couple of insomniacs get to spend quality time these past volumes, and of course, their relationship grows quite naturally. In an extended summer vacation, the two are implementing their ambitious star photography project yet.
The character and relationship growth between Isaki and Ganta has been a joy to behold. They both have different causes for their insomnia, with Isaki's physiological reasons, and Ganta's more emotional underpinning. Ganta has began to open up, talking about his mother to Isaki for the first time, which could finally release him from his own insomnia affliction. This only leaves Isaki, who although is quite open about her own insomnia troubles, she has a scene here which seems to foreshadow her own mortality. It's a beautifully composed chapter, the way the earlier ones have been so far.
This volume ends the previous arc on a note that could change the circumstances between our two main leads. For the first time, there seems to be hints of higher stakes drama, a different turn to what has been a relaxing manga until now.
“Take a picture. I want there to be a picture of my face...during the happiest moment of my life”.
Vale.
"I’m not sure why, but it feels like if I dont hold her hand…Magari will melt away in this White summer…and our summer will come to an end".
For Isaki and Ganta, their club trip has gone from chaperoned to a big adventure alone inside a little house. Oh, and they just kissed, so they should probably deal with that at some point. Like now.
This manga is probably going to break my heart in two and I’m probably going to let it. The signs are all there and it’s still just so good.
This is the best summer vacation I have ever enjoyed in manga. This art style is gorgeous and it continues to nail the subtle little details of two teenagers who both really, really like one another and are pretty embarrassed by it even if the feeling is mutual.
Oh, but it also has some fantastic landscape work as well. The photography that Isaki and Ganta get up to while they are actually doing the thing they’re supposed to be doing (and not being all gooey), may not make anybody take up stargazing, but it absolutely conveys why a person would do it.
Everything about Isaki and Ganta’s relationship is wonderful. I would read another five volumes of their stolen glances and accidental brushing against one another. It’s not like they’re trying to deny it either; they just won’t admit it. Well…
The entire summer trip is just endlessly enjoyable and I loved the inclusion of Isaki’s friends and how Ganta is still awkward as hell, but he’s getting there. It’s like he’s growing up or something and learning to finally open up to the girl he’s in love with. They just get so much in here without hitting the major beats you’d expect.
And Isaki drops a heck of a statement that quietly implies her condition is not as handled as she makes it out to be, some obvious (but no less effective) potential foreshadowing, and that just happens to lead to the massive explosion at the end when her parents get involved.
It’s classic chafing against the overprotective parents who are acting in your best interest, but I’m dying to see how it plays out because nothing about this series has ever let me down and I’ve got faith it isn’t going to start. It goes far bigger in these last moments, but that makes sense given that what these two just got up to would make almost any parent go ballistic.
This whole manga is a perfect example of how to make a quiet moment into something so loud. Some of the panels without dialogue are practically shouting from the rooftops. They practically ask you to luxuriate in the storytelling.
I love a manga that lets you read just so much from its art and this is one of the best in that regard. You’d be surprised how many series feel the need to explain what they’re showing, which is why this one trusting its audience so much is so immensely satisfying.
It is an outstanding portrait of a traditional young (and awkward) love, with two very unique (and awkward) protagonists. The way it has conveyed all this has taken my breath away at times. It is elegant, but not at the cost of its narrative or characters.
5 stars - this might be the best manga romance I’ve ever read? It captures the mood and vibe of that idealized version of teenage life and it conveys the feelings it’s going for so very well. Fantastic.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I like this series. It's just nice to get to know these characters. What a way to end this volume. I'm almost nervous for them and I need to read volume 7 asap!
The fact this series continues to hit all the right marks for me. Excellent lead, good side cast, remarkable shots including one where they admit to each other their feelings, it's just so perfect the way this one gives me a smile the whole time. Great stuff.
This series continues to be the break I need in both reading and life. Gentle, quiet, calm, caring, thoughtful, BEAUTIFULLY illustrated... In this volume some confessions are made, they take their big photos for the competition and parents get involved. It is a very satisfying installment and I couldn't love this book more.
I have blasted through all the available books in this series in two days so this is a generic, overall (spoiler free) review of the series.
I have never really enjoyed manga preferring books, light novels and anime but the first 2 episodes of this show caught my eye so I decided to try it and I am very glad I did.
I have found the manga to be easy to follow and enjoyable so far (up to book 9).
I was worried this was going to be another story that goes no where and stagnates but I feel fairly confident now in saying this series has a set plot path and destination and there was more story development in the first 4 books than most Japanese media I have read/ seen have in their entire series. The two MCs are interesting with you learning about them as they learn about each other - what feels mostly natural and a good pace. The story has been really good - exactly what I was hoping for more. The side characters feel like they're actually there and real people and also have their own small plots going on (I find some stories have side characters because they have to but with minimal effort put into them where this is not the case here). The art work is really nice and I've never had an interest in photography before but all of a sudden I find myself wishing my camera phone was a lot more camera: The story draws you in and makes you interested.
There's no fan service, no repetition or bad jokes, the story doesn't feel forced or slowed down (to please the readers or the publishers), the scenes, settings relationships and plot feels realistic and it's all well told and well drawn. If this series keeps going as well as it is then it could take over as my favourite story in the light novel, anime, manga area for me. All in all I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in slice of life/ romance.
Proprio come me e te.

I love that the series doesn’t have a ton of dialogue and the absolutely gorgeous drawings and the manga panels are able to speak for themselves. I love beautifully crafted slice of life Mangas that are so prettily drawn that you’re tuning into two shy ass high school kids traverse Japan in order to take photographs of the night sky!
But it’s the moment when it’s just Ganta and Isaki where they’re really able to talk freely and say what’s on their mind and reveal a little bit about their families and their past lives so that they can get closer.
And they’re finally getting past that threshold of what are we… LIL BABIES !!! The kiss in volume 5 really pushed them into trying to hold hands and sharing foods and GantA’S CONFESSION UNDER THR STARRY NIGHT SKY AT THE MAWAKI RUINS OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG I love them and I just hope Isaki’s parents are understanding of their need to go out and explore and see the world around them ^^;
This volume was really great but it ended on kind of a downer, but it was definitely understandable. I can’t wait to see how the ending affects the series going forward. I love how this faux club that started just as an excuse for Gan and Isaki to nap in the observatory has now blossomed into their romance and a great cast of secondary characters that aren’t necessarily part of the astronomy club, but who have helped out and really got our main characters out of a pinch in this volume. I LOVED how comfortable Isaki and Gan have become expressing their feelings towards one another. I can’t wait to read Volume 7 in September!!
Ganta and Isaki kissed! They kissed and they're embarrassed and it's adorable and AAAH! But that doesn't mean they've lost sight of why they're here. They still have plans to get some good astrophotography at the Mawaki ruins (6000+ year old, whoa), even if a couple days of rain don't allow them to scout the location early, a surprise visit from friends for supplies turn into a day of goofing off, and a phone call from Isaki's parents letting them know that they've been busted (you know, since their chaperone ditched them).
But most of this is just images and scenery and I could totally see this being the coziest anime.
Ganta Nakami and Isaki Magari are off on their astronomy club's summer trip accompanied by Isaki's older sister. They have everything planned out, but did not count on rain lengthening the trip. Not to mention the budding emotions that have come to the surface. But despite the obstacles they face, Ganta and Isaki manage to finally make it to Mawaki ruins for their final shoot. Great artwork, gorgeous star pictures and natural emotions fill this book. It will be interesting to see what will come in the next volume!
