Esme is a Scottish romance author who writes books about demanding and possessive alpha-heros. Or anti-heros, when the mood takes her. They're usually gruff and hard, but that is until they meet the women who bring them to their knees.
In her spare time Esme writes sci-fi romance and sometimes remembers to eat. She's a mum of two very fiesty heroines and a wolf-hybrid, and she lives with her very own highlander-husband who she is trying to convince to do her audiobooks ;-)
I believe I read the *Beta* version of this story, though I'm still not sure if there's even an ending for Baron and Sapphire's story. Torment followed 4 months after Twisted/The Carnival's Daughter and I'm still not any wiser to Baron's true feelings. By then, it's clear that Sapphire loves him but the damn man still prefers her to "fear" him than to "love" him. Baron's psyche just boggles me.
Anyway, I honestly can say I preferred Twisted to this second book because Torment introduces Cut (Baron's half-brother) and also King (Baron's father). We finally to see what lies on the other side of Baron's island, and frankly the plot while grisly and entertaining wrought with tension, since everyone's basically each other's enemies....I felt so lost and thought the author bungled that one up. There was focus in Twisted, mostly on Baron and Sapphire's relationship, but in Torment...everything was just all over the place.
Maxim of the Carnival ratted out Baron's identity and King dispatches Cut to retrieve his firstborn son, and Sapphire who carries Baron's heir. Baron's not happy of course, but honestly, while we know he's got mommy-daddy issues, there's no clear cut reason as to why Baron would willfully go back, as in what's his drive or aim or objective. As usual, Baron's a fucking hard map to read. As for Sapphire, the poor girl was just lost in the many details of Torment.
I'm not sure if what I read is the full version or conclusion as we have yet to see Cut's story being revealed in March? Maybe then we'll finally get a conclusion to Baron and Sapphire's story as well, because the author sure left us on a mole hill cliffy in Torment. After this, I'm not even sure I'm keen to pursue the remaining of the series.
I'm not sure what is going to happen between the two. Baron always has a plan and it was spoken about, a bit, in the first book. I'm intrigued by him and he never lies but reveals himself with phrases and words that I believe give Sapphire the answers which she is seeking...she has to listen to every word and so do I as the reader...she wants a declaration of true love, poor girl.. He's not made up that way but doesn't it mean he loves her in a way that isn't defined like society wishes. He's totally honest and always ahead of the game... It's so twisted right? I love it and hope the next book will come out soon!
I was truly excited to continue with Baron and Saphire's story. In this book we get to see Baron's back story and also Saphire's beginning, it's dark, twisted and I cannot wait to read the next book and find out about Cut, Baron's brother. This may not be everyones taste but I really enjoy Esme's dark and somewhat otherworldly twist. If you enjoy books that are left of field then I would recommend these books. Warning this is aimed at an older audience and it does end on a cliffhanger.
This book was so much different than the first. There was a lot of typos and mistakes which usually doesn’t bother me if it’s here and there but I felt like I kept running into them. No spicy scenes which is a huge let down for me lol and this had a lot of potential but fell a little flat for me. Not enough really happened.
This just… didn’t hit like the first one did. I DNF at about 15% and skipped to the last two chapters. They didn’t pull me into the story so I stopped.
