He thought his days risking his life were over. He was dead wrong.
Jareth Hicks traded military missions for slinging beers in a dive bar and a little security work on the side. He thought his days of risking his life for others were behind him... until she showed up on his doorstep.
His ex-lover, who also happened to be Jareth's CIA handler in his Black Ops days, is in a bad way. Her sister has been taken by a mysterious cult and she needs Jareth’s help to rescue her.
Danger is guaranteed.
Death a possibility.
Ever the good soldier, Jareth can’t say no.
Under assumed identities they infiltrate the cult’s desert compound. There the pair are welcomed by the group and their sinisterly charismatic leader, Memphis Pope. It doesn't take long for it to become evident something dark is bubbling beneath the surface. Pope is armed with a twisted agenda and a band of dedicated followers ready to do his bidding.
Can Hicks find the missing girl and stop the cult from carrying out their deadly plans? Or will this mission prove to be his last?
From Bestselling author Matthew Hattersley, The Death Factory is the first unputdownable book in the new Jareth Hicks Thriller series.
Loved this, especially bc it involves a cult!! Love this new character Jareth Hicks too. He's a badass who does not flaunt it but it is evident to everyone he comes into contact with. Also thrilled to learn that Hicks and Acid Vanilla have a novel together, "Never Say Die." Definitely gonna check that out.
So in this one, Hicks, who is trying to move away from his mercenary type of persona, gets wrapped up in a favor for an old friend. As luck would have it, her sister has, you guessed it, joined a cult. It was interesting to see the usual "we hate the establishment and we are going to destroy it all" disguised as love peace and tranquility. The words out of their mouths are just so sickening. It's up to Hicks and Gemma (the friend) to infiltrate the cult by joining and then figuring out how to find and extract the sister while also figure out what the angle is and either stop it or get help.
So, when I read the Acid Vanilla series (still reading it....) I wondered what my assassin code name would be. With this one, I wondered what my cult name would be. There is a Buttercup and an Estrella in this cult. I decided my name would be ethereal, like Whisper or Willow but I thought I wanted it to start with F (no idea why) and the only thing I could think of was Feather, which just sounds ridiculous. So I guess I would choose Whisper....or Willow. I am sure I will know when the moment arrives. HAHA
Received a complimentary ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the first instalment in the Jareth Hicks series and what a fast paced adventure ride it was, with car chases, kidnappings, murder and sand aplenty. Our new hero, who previously appeared as a love interest for the enigmatic Acid Vanilla, is persuaded to accompany a former work colleague as she desperately searches for her lost sister, but finding her is only half the battle! Can't wait for the next instalment to see what dilemmas he can become embroiled in next.
A first in series for Jareth Hicks having first appeared in the last Acid book. An excellent story showcasing a man prepared to put himself on the line for those in need, plenty of action and bodes well for future books in the series.
I enjoyed the story. Characters were well developed - I cared about them. There was plenty of suspense & action to keep me "turning pages!". It was well written. I think he is a creative writer. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action/adventure stories.
An old friend, Gemma approaches Jareth to ask his help to rescue her sister from a cult. Things aren’t what they seem in many ways. Lots of action and intrigue.
