Ethereum: The Legend of Vitalik Buterin

Rate this book
If you thought Mark Zuckerberg IPO-ing Facebook at $100B by age 27 was something, wait until you hear the story of this high school junior creating $500B (!!) of market cap by the same age — and oh maybe seeding the future dethroning of Facebook, Google, Amazon and all of the big tech in the process. Regardless of whether you're a crypto neophyte, a die-hard bull, or a skeptical bear, this is a story you need to hear, and Ethereum is an innovation you need to understand.

As many of you who have bought or sold cryptocurrencies over the past few years know, there has been a big second game in town with ether, ETH, the token used as a currency in the Ethereum network. This time, it's not just about currency. Ethereum is something completely different. You can think of it more as a gigantic distributed computer that exists all around the globe, in a completely decentralized way.

It is one single virtual machine that runs across millions of CPUs, all at the same time. Albeit on one very slow virtual machine. There is a strong argument to be made that this enormous tamper-proof, censorship-proof computer is maybe the most important invention of the last decade, laying the groundwork for technology companies to come for the next several decades. While there are kittens and rainbows everywhere you look in Ethereum land, there were some absolutely wild stories that transpired to bring us to where we are today.

An interesting piece of contemporary history tracing the development of Ethereum. It is engagingly written with detailed biographical information on important figures that created Ethereum, have impacted Ethereum in the past, and how it has developed wider acceptance.

I read Shivam's previous book on BTC and thoroughly enjoyed it. This book filled the gap, telling the history of Ethereum. Shivam writes with a masterful mix of human touch, technical details, and the suspense of a fiction thriller. Once you start, you can't stop reading.

This book tells the fascinating story of Ethereum and the people that built it. It involves geniuses, libertarians, idealists, fraudsters, hackers, billions of dollars, and most importantly, a technology with the potential to change the world.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the DAO Wars and the subsequent Fork. I also remember vividly many of the details highlighted in the chapter on the Boom (i.e., the Bubble). I can personally relate to them, even recalling where I was and what I was doing when these events unfolded.

Highly recommended!

I'd suggest that even if you aren't "into" blockchain/crypto/Ethereum, but you just want to read a great true story, I'd recommend this. If you're involved in this tech or investing, then there is even more reason to read it.

An extremely entertaining history of the Ethereum digital currency. The author does an exceptional job of showing the motivations and history of the people involved in Ethereum's creation and attempts to make it mainstream.

The technological aspects of the currency (commodity?) were easy to understand from the book. After reading it, I feel like I have a grasp of the basics.

All the same, the subject matter alone is worthy of 5 stars. I highly recommend it.
