It’s 2024 and I’m still as obsessed with Rose Tyler as ever. This is a great set of adventures from Big Finish. They’re quite action packed, making for a vivid listen. I really enjoyed Danni as a character, and their relationship with Rose was by far the most interesting aspect of this collection. Not sure if the series will continue, but the final story leads nicely into the Series 4 finale arc. I’m always down for more Rose stories though!

I liked the premise of this series, but didn't care for Danni. The ending was very good, though. I know further installments are unnecessary, but I hope for a series with Rose and parallel universe Donnas.

sink or swim - 3/5, the lower road - 3.5/5, the good samaritan - 4/5

this volume is a lot more action packed than the previous two, which could be a bad or good thing depending on how you respond to audio stories. for me, personally, action packed audio stories are always at a disadvantage because i find them hard to follow without visual aid. it’s why the first two volumes are some of my favourite content produced by big finish; they’re a lot more focused on quiet moments and conversations between characters.

however, portraying an apocalyptic world purely through audio is no doubt a hard task to undertake so i have to give this volume kudos for doing it as well as they did. at the heart of this series is rose’s relationship with danni. without spoiling anything, it adds a lot to rose’s character and her desperate mission to find the doctor which was great to hear. danni was also a really good character addition in their own right, and whenever i watch rose in series 4 from now on, danni will most definitely be at the back of my mind.

i really missed jackie and clive but, ironically, that made me like this series even more because rose is also without them and it really does feel like a more dangerous world without these two in them. i could greatly relate to rose’s desperation to get home (i also wanted to go home to clive and jackie!!)

overall, i didn’t like this series as much as the previous two but it’s just such a different kind of series to the previous two so i don’t know if comparing and contrasting is really fair. this volume has really made me excited for the next one though; i wonder if they’re going to go back to the normal self-contained stories (hopefully🤞) or if they’ll be leaning into more overarching stories from now on as rose gets closer to finding the doctor and donna. i don’t really mind as long as clive and jackie are there 🫂

The third volume of the Dimension Cannon series kicks off and picks up from the harrowing conclusion of the second volume, and wow! The writers were not messing around! I love that they switched things up a bit, having this volume center around a single universe that Rose has gotten stuck in, a universe that is completely descending into hell unlike anything Rose has ever seen.

Overall, this was a great volume. I loved that they switched things up by making this volume essentially one three-part story, as opposed a series of three stories like the first two volumes were. I absolutely adored Rose’s relationship with Danni, and it breaks my heart to know that they’re parted for good. They’ll not see one another again… or perhaps they will. The story points out that everything is connected, and everything starts and ends at the same place. Perhaps one day Rose *will* see Danni again.

I don’t know if Big Finish will do any more for this series. I think it could go either way – the events of TGS does the job of pointing Rose in Donna’s direction as the key to finding the Doctor. There were hints throughout the entire series about Donna’s importance, something Rose even noticed in one story, and Danni’s information kind of seals the deal. However, just because Rose now knows for sure that Donna is the way to the Doctor, it’s possible that the Cannon could still take a few tries to get her to the right Donna. I think before this, they had the Cannon on focusing on finding Jackie and/or Pete. If Rose is aiming for Donna, then it’s possible it might take a few tries to get it right, which leaves some room for another volume I think. It’d be wonderful to have Clive and/or Pete back one last time. Regardless, this has been a delightful series, and I am so glad I decided to purchase it. All three volumes now have a special place on my bookshelf!

what an amazing boxset - can i have another pls??

also, love that there was very minimal misgendering and everyone used the right pronouns for dani throughout. big finish ended transphobia in 2023. LOLLLLLL. loved that element.

1. sink or swim - 4/5

this one was a cool, introductory story. introducing dani was done super well - and it was great to see camille's range when it came to this version of jackie. this post-apocalyptic world is terrifying. looks like there will be assholes in control even in the distant, barren future...

2. the lower road - 5/5

what an awesome story. rose and dani's relationship is beginning to flourish and you can feel them connecting. the community they enter is seemingly all-cool until they are not. the ethical discussion brought about this episode... pretty intense - and the performances are sensational.

3. the good samaritan - 4/5

this was the weakest episode, in my opinion. but, still held up. the revelation about the pathics and evolution... was shocking - and im sad about dani not joining rose in the parallel universe. but, i can see why they stayed - and they were returning the favour.

overall - 4.6

Unlike the previous offerings in this series, this is a single three-part story, with Rose stuck in a particular parallel universe throughout. None of the recurring characters from the previous volumes are present, with their roles taken by new characters native to the dimension. The result isn't as strong as the prior volumes, with some degree of repetition between its stories, but it's still good enough, and the more extended narrative and exploration of the setting may appeal to those who like post-apocalyptic tales.

Sink or Swim – The first episode introduces us to the setting, as Rose arrives on a former cruise liner and loses contact with the operators of the Cannon. In this case, the world turns to be not just doomed, but already postapocalyptic. It’s a slower fate than most of those we have previously seen, civilisation having largely been destroyed, and the inevitable extinction of humanity approaching without quite being here yet. This obviously makes for a dark story, with most of the characters the sort of brutal types that could rise to the top in this situation. It’s largely a desperate battle for survival, but finds time to introduce some of the key themes of the world, and, as usual, something about the parallel life of the Tylers. We’re also introduced to the new character who accompanies Rose in this volume, who is generally effective and interesting. (I'll note that they are trans, which will probably put some people off, but this is merely a background fact that isn’t rammed home… listeners may differ as to whether that’s the right approach or not but it works for me).

The Lower Road – In some respects, the second story is more traditionally postapocalyptic as Rose and Danni trek across southwest England in search of a way home. Instead, they find temporary sanctuary in a tower block taken over by a community trying to survive against the collapse of society and the mysterious force that initiated it. There are questions here about who to believe and trust, as various characters have differing perspectives of what’s going on, and there’s the constant menace from ‘the lower road’ of the title. It may not have literal zombies, but the theme of an outpost of civilisation making sacrifices to survive in a hostile world has much in common with the likes of The Walking Dead.

The Good Samaritan – Rose finally reaches a haven of high technology that might get her home, and once again, we find that everything is not as rosy as it might appear. Although it’s presented differently to the community in the previous episode, with a more visibly dystopian setup, some of the themes are repeated so that the eventual struggle is against much the same problem. More is made here of the psychic abilities that have had a more background role in the prior episodes, and the larger community also gives a different feel. There’s also a little more explanation of what the mysterious threat to the world’s survival actually is, although the final answer remains ambiguous. After a relatively slow beginning, this builds into a tense battle to see if both Rose and Danni can escape before time runs out for not just them, but everyone else, too. The story ends with a direct tie-in to Turn Left, effectively wrapping up this particular series.

This series gave me a new appreciation for rose.
Over the course of the show it’s always rose and the doctor. Not just rose or rose and her mom. The story overall wasn’t as good as the first 2 but fine. I did really like the non binary representation with Dani, it’s been a while since I’ve randomly come across a character that’s non binary who I didn’t have to look directly for which as a non binary person was awesome
Except I hated how they died or ended up in the antimatter dimension thingy. They should have brought them back to rose’s dimension and had a sequel story set after the episodes, in my opinion

Listened on Billie Piper’s birthday, of course. As expected, this eventually leads into the end of series 4. It’s my least favorite of the three volumes though.

Dropped it two stars as the final story was only 50 minutes. If Big Finish is so obsessed with the three story box sets, each episode better at least be an hour.
