Told through wit and humor and 100% illustrations, Hooray for Craft Beer! is an entertaining and informative journey through the history and world of craft beer. Readers will explore every aspect of beer from the ingredients and brewing process to glassware and how to taste beer, as they embark on a whirlwind trip around the world to discover the origin of favorite beer styles. Hooray for Craft Beer! is a simple, easy-to-read guide to learning featuring delightful illustrations. Yes, craft beer can be whimsical as well as tasty!
I went into this book as a novice, and came out of it...basically still a novice. It has some interesting background info, but used some terms that were never defined. It feels more like a book to have on the shelf and take down every now and again to learn about a specific beer you have in your fridge than one to borrow from the library and read to start a learning journey.
A large part of the book is providing brief info on specific types of beer from the U.S. and Europe. I wish those sections would have included examples of each type of beer; as someone who is not great at imaging flavor combinations, it would have been helpful to connect the info to a specific beer I may have tried in the past.
This was an easy, pleasant, brief primer on beer with an emphasis on the history, the brewing process and popular beer varieties. I particularly liked the sections on food pairings and the types of drinking vessels. For a book who's subtitle touts it's illustrations, I found the simplistic and repetitive artwork a little boring.
I picked this delightful book up at Fox Farm Brewery in CT. (If you haven't been and you get the opportunity, go. You won't regret it.)
Hooray for Craft Beer is a clever, fun and educated guide to the basics of beer. This is a quick, cute read with absolutely adorable illustrations. Bonus points for the beer and food pairings!
I thought it was going to be a cute easy book. Instead, I got a cute, informative, easy to read book. Yes there are cartoonish drawings but there is history, process, terminology, pairings, national/regional types, glassware and even hints for visiting a brewery, taproom or bottle shop.
I wholly recommend this to any aspiring beer enthusiast.
