Gaza Blues: Different Stories

These two new voices from Israel and Palestine have no common political agenda (they don't talk about politics to each other), but share a stated desire to make the conflict more complex for their readers. Complex as human life is complex: maddening, contradictory, filled with conflicting emotions, weaknesses, dreams, failings. For those who have not travelled to this region, your only recourse is literature, which addresses why the conflict is so intractable and why the dehumanisation of the enemy through slogans makes the desired resolution so impossible. The wit, daring, and sheer bloody-minded audacity of these marvellous stories makes it, for me, the book of the year for anyone who prefers to listen to the voices of the people of this region instead of the sound of their own rhetoric.

About the author

Born in Ramat Gan in 1967, Etgar Keret is a leading voice in Israeli literature and film. His books have been published in over four dozen languages and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, Le Monde and The New Yorker, among others. His awards include the Cannes Film Festival's "Caméra d'Or" (2007), the Charles Bronfman Prize (2016) and the prestigious Sapir Prize (2018). Over a hundred short films and several feature films have been based on his stories. Keret teaches creative writing at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Since 2021, he has been publishing the weekly newsletter "Alphabet Soup" on Substack.

NON TEMERE E NON SPERARE



Titolo molto azzeccato scritto a quattro mani, alternando la firma, alcuni racconti sono dell’israeliano Etgar Keret, ormai stella letteraria del suo paese, altri sono scritti dal palestinese Samir El Yussef.
Partorito durante l’Intifada, è un gesto per dimostrare e manifestare volontà e possibilità di coesistenza tra i due popoli:
Se la nostra gente non può convivere nella vita di tutti i giorni, dimostriamo almeno che possono convivere nelle pagine di un libro diceva lo scrittore palestinese che ha coinvolto il collega israeliano.



La risposta di Keret è stata fattiva, s’è lasciato coinvolgere come se fosse un progetto terapeutico. Il che potrebbe sorprendere considerato che l’israeliano dice:
Alla guerra fai l'abitudine. Quand'ero bambino erano inaspettate, oggi sembrano delle biennali.
Anche qui i suoi racconti hanno quel suo tipico tono surreale, venato di ironia amara e momenti di gentilezza e poesia.
Lei dice che non la amo veramente. Sostiene che dico di amarla, che penso di amarla, ma che in realtà non è così. Ho già sentito di gente che dice di non amare qualcuno, ma decidere per un altro che quello non ami qualcuno?



Alla serie di racconti brevi scritti da Keret si affianca quello, unico e più lungo, scritto da El-Youssef. Cresciuto in un campo profughi in terra libanese, ambienta la sua storia nella stessa location.
Anche in un campo profughi esiste una routine quotidiana, una strana forma di “normalità” che El-Youssef mette su carta con ironia, quasi in tono di presa in giro, anche lui giocando con l’assurdo: è la capacità di adattamento e di ricostruzione delle abitudini, riti e manie quasi incredibile che hanno gli esseri umani.



”L’arte! L’arte! Ecco cosa ci salverà dalla condizione degenerata in cui stiamo vivendo!” sentenziò, strozzandosi per la contentezza.
“E l’Intifada no?” gli domandai, cercando di sottolineare il fatto che in quello stato di felicità assoluta per lo spettacolo se n’era completamente dimenticato. Una volta Ahmad considerava l’Intifada l’unica reazione promettente contro la corruzione che stavamo subendo.
“Certo, anche quella” rispose lui con aria allegra, come se gli fosse appena piovuta addosso una barca di soldi. “Ma come saprai, l’Intifada è un’opera d’arte di per sé” aggiunse un attimo dopo col viso illuminato da un’aria di gran soddisfazione.
Ebbi l’impressione che Ahmad fosse soddisfatto più per l’eloquenza della risposta che per aver saputo replicare a una domanda insidiosa.

Un piccolo miracolo. Purtroppo solo letterario.

Yazarları barışa olan inançlarını kaybettiklerinden dolayı basımına devam edilmiyor. Öyküler açısından pek bir şey kaybetmiş sayılmazsınız zira Etgar Keret'in diğer kitaplarında da yer alan öyküler çoğu. Ancak kitabın çıkış amacının güzeliğinden sonra geldiği son üzücü.

bi' israilli etgar keret ve bi'filistinli samir el-youssef 'un yazdıkları kitap. ilgimi çekti çünkü avi pardo çevirmiş. o çevirdiyse bir bildiği vardır. tez zamanda edinmek ve okumak lazım gelir.

etgar keret'in 8-10 kadar öyküsü ve samir el-youssef'in bir uzun öyküsünden oluşan güzelim kitap. itiraf etmem gerekir ki etgar keret'i okurken daha çok keyif aldım. dilinde hep bir mizah var. öykünün olanaklarından yararlanmasını iyi biliyor, yeri geldi mi kurgu oyunları yapıyor. öykülerdeki gerçek-üstücülük de fantastik'e varmayan bi havada- bunu fantastik kurgu sevmeyenler için söylüyorum. ben sevdim, siz de sevin.

samir el-youssef'un uzun hikayesiyse filisten'den kaçmak isteyen bir adamın odağa oturtulduğu, onun üzerinden bir savaş hattında hayat, sosyal ilişkiler ve psikolojik durum panaromasını veren bir eser. bitirince, kendi steril hayatlarınızda, sıcak evlerinizde otururken kendinizi anlamsız hissetmenize neden oluyor.

okuması rahat çevirisi süper bir kitap. feysbuktan gına geldiği bi akşam açın okuyun, bana teşekkürü sonra edersiniz.

I read a couple of his books. What they all have in common is his natural talent to tell stories that seem to hover slightly above reality. He has a fantasy for situations that I admire. You never know what will happen, no matter how short the short story is. If you read him I suggest doing what I do: one story a day. It lingers on, you take it with you. And he pulled it off with the very nonchalant writing style which you can enjoy without losing the focus on the story. He doesn't show off, he writes well: stories that have little in common with other writers and that sometimes come across like short treatments for a movie.

Gazze’nin adı anıldığında zihnimize önce çatışma gelir, sonra çocuklar, sonra sessizlik. Ama Etgar Keret, o çatışmanın ortasında, gündelik bir absürtlük çıkarır karşımıza; bir çorbanın içinden çıkan kurşun gibi. Kitabın ilk yarısı Keret’in, ikinci yarısı Filistinli yazar Samir El-Youssef’in kaleminden çıkmış. Ortak bir coğrafyada, ayrı ayrı büyümüş iki travmanın sesleri bunlar.

Keret’in öykülerinde, ölümle burun buruna yaşarken hâlâ dolmuşa para üstü bırakmaya çalışan insanların absürtlüğü var. Şiddetle kuşatılmış bir şehirde bile “biri beni arasın” beklentisi bitmiyor. Mizah karanlık ama yumuşak; Kafka Tel Aviv'de büyüseydi böyle yazardı herhalde. Kelimeler kısa, cümleler kesik, düşünceler ise gövdesi olmayan gölgeler gibi.

El-Youssef tarafı çok daha doğrudan, daha gerçek. Bir sürgünün iç sesi. Orta Doğu'nun yalnızlaştırdığı bir aydının kişisel tarihi. Onunki daha çok ağıt gibi, daha çok arşiv. Keret’in bölümü ise bir el feneri gibi -ışığı her yere saçılmıyor, ama tuttuğu noktayı sorgusuz sualsiz parlatıyor.

Neden Okunmalı?
Çünkü bu kitap, “taraf” seçmeden taraf olmanın kitabı. Çünkü hem İsrail’de hem Filistin’de büyüyen bir çocuğun gözünden, aynı savaşın farklı rüyalarını göreceksiniz. Çünkü savaş bazen silahlarla değil, kelimelerle anlatıldığında daha çok acıtır.

İsrail-Filistin meselesine dair politik bir kitap değil bu; politikayı sindirmiş insanların ruhsal artıkları gibi. Ve o artıklar, midede taş gibi kalıyor.

Etgar Keret ile ucuncu, Samir El-Youssef ile ilk bulusmama vesile oldu Gazze Blues. Ismi gibi ilginc, etkeyici ve sasirtici bir kitap bu. Etgar Keret bazen sadece bir sayfa suren kisacik hikayelerinde okuyucuyu ayni anda hem huzunlendirip hem de gulumsetebiliyor ve bunu yaparken oyle etkili karakterler yaratiyor ki, siz sanki bir film izliyor gibi oluyorsunuz okurken.

Keret ne kadar etkileticiyse El Youssef da o kadar sikici geldi bana maalesef. Kitapta sadee bir hikayesi var ki o da 40 sayfa. Keret'in hikayelerindeki canlilik ve ilginclikten sonra bana fazla yalin ve heyecansiz geldi ki tek yildizi da o yuzden esirgedim zaten burada. Fakat kitap bu acidan amacina ulasiyor, arka kapakta Filistinli El Youssef'un Israilli Keret'e yazdigi gibi "Seni okuyan ve beni hicbir zaman okumayacak o kadar cok insan var ki.. Iki tarafi da insanliktan cikarmanin cok kolay oldugu bir konuda taraflari insancillastirmak icin bir caba gostermis oluruz"

A very curious selection of short stories. Refreshing to read about a very different life and people than a usual western based fiction. Some of the stories were just pure humour, very amusing, and others made you really think critically about our society and norms. Very cleverly written and in a twisted way, all in all a good entertainment.

To be blunt, I didn't understand the stories within the book. I bought it with the best of intentions, hoping to gain some insight into a conflict which has been raging for decades. Having now finished the book, I am none the wiser. However, I must clarify that this is not a fault of the authors. On the contrary, I did enjoy the stories as simple narratives. But I am certain that the symbolism contained within each story was largely unrecognized by me. Perhaps I need more context on the authors themselves or a more intricate understanding of the conflict and its history, but the best way I can describe my experience with this book is that it was like having a set of parts and tools laid out in front of me with very basic knowledge of their purpose or function. I can admire them for what they are, but taken as a whole I am unable to find a connection or greater purpose.

The two star rating was, again, no fault of the authors. It is my own lack of understanding which prevented me from fully grasping the deeper meaning of the book. I suppose I would recommend this to someone who has a greater knowledge and appreciation for authors and works from this region.

Er wordt gesuggereerd dat er in deze bundel twee werelden bij elkaar komen: de auteurs die bijdragen hebben geleverd zijn namelijk Israëlisch (Keret) en Palestijns (El-youssef). Van Keret bevat de bundel 15 verhalen, van El-youssef 1. De spreekruimte op papier is weliswaar ongeveer gelijk, maar als je twee werelden bij elkaar brengt wordt de een wel erg arm geïllustreerd ten opzichte van de ander. De vier sterkste verhalen van deze bundel zijn van Keret:
'Buizen', 'Schoenen', 'Voor maar 19,99 sjekel (incl. BTW en verzendkosten' en 'Verrassingsei'.

This short book combines a number of Keret’s trademark short, sharp stories with a 60-page novella by El-Youssef. I loved Keret’s stories, as I always do, though I’ve read many of them in other collections. I was a bit more ambivalent about El-Youssef’s novella—I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. I also was unsure how the two authors’ work was meant to play off each other. Keret’s stories for the most part don’t address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; El-Youssef’s work does. This might be expected as Keret is Israeli and El-Youssef is Palestinian. However, it was definitely thought-provoking to consider that the conflict we are witnessing in 2024 was resonating in 1996, when this book was originally published.

Recently, Keret hasn't got the guts to say what is really happening and his stories are barely readeable anyway. Samir, however, is a wonderful writer. How many like him have we lost?

I'd give Keret 3.5 stars and El-Youssef 2.5 stars. Keret's short stories have an enjoyable dose of unreality to them which keeps them interesting. El-Youssef's contribution is meandering and lacking in focus which, of course, was the point but made it more of a chore to read. Still, an interesting look at Israeli and Arab points of view.

"Boktan bir kitap. Belki iki... pardon, üç öykü hariç, gerisi bir boka yaramaz." Bunu ben söylemiyorum, Keret'in bir karakteri söylüyor. Bir kere enfes kapak tasarımı ve ilgi çekici ismiyle büyük beklentiler oluşturan bir kitap Gazze Blues. Kitabında arkasında yatan hikaye ise daha da ilgi çekici: Bir bomba saldırısının ardından Filistinli Samir El-Youssef, İsrailli Etgar Keret'i arayarak "Bir şeyler yapmamız gerek!" diyor ve birlikte bir kitap yapmayı teklif ediyor. Böylece Keret'i okuyan ve kendisini hiçbir zaman okumayacak onlarca insana ulaşmayı ve "iki tarafı da insanlıktan çıkarmanın çok kolay olduğu bir konuda tarafları insancıllaştırmak için bir çaba göstermeyi" hedefliyor; başarılı da oluyor. Kabul edelim; Gazze Blues olmasaydı bizlerin de Youssef'un ismini duyma ihtimalimiz düşüktü gerçekten. Ancak tüm bunlara rağmen vasat bir kitap Gazze Blues. İsrailli yazarın hali hazırda başka kitap ve dergilerde yayımlanmış 15 öyküsünün, Filistinli yazarınsa 43 sayfalık tek bir öyküsünün yer aldığı kitabı kurtarmaya ne Keret'in muzip dili ne de Youssef'un samimi anlatımı yetmiş. Hoşuma giden tek tarafı, tema olarak ağdalı ve ajitasyon dolu bir Filistin-İsrail çatışması yerine, bu insanlık dramının fon oluşturduğu günlük olayları ve bireysel sıkıntıları seçmeleri oldu. Hikayenin özüne, gerçeğine baktığımız hissi yaratıyor bu durum. Bunun dışındaysa belki iki... pardon, üç öykü dışında pek de dişe dokunur bir şey yok.

Finita la prima parte, un insieme di racconti dell'israeliano Keret, sono un po' perplessa.
L'intento, fortemente ironico, appare evidente, meno il significato di queste microstorie. Il filo conduttore vorrebbe essere l'insensatezza, spontanea reazione allergica ad una guerra infinita. A me per ora pare invece una bruttissima copia, stilisticamente parlando, de "La metamorfosi" kafkiana.

Librino ultimato, però se mi interrogassero sui contenuti prenderei uno zero secco. I racconti brevi di Keret e quello lungo di El-Youssef non hanno lasciato alcuna traccia.
L'intenzione - esprimere lo sgretolamento dell'individuo catapultato nella belligeranza infinita - era lodevole. Questi bipedi che vagano alla ricerca di una riempitiva distrazione, avendo già annullato urbe et orbe, potenzialmente sono suggestivi. Ma il ricorso ad una quotidianità che non è meccanica bensì becera e sconclusionata, il linguaggio elementare quanto quello di un seienne, freschezza esclusa, risultano mortali.

Se voleva essere un esperimento di postmodernità ha fallito miseramente.
Ho apprezzato molto la sola copertina: deo gratias non c'erano donne fascinosamente velate e dagli occhi d'ossidiana, leitmotiv dell'industria libraria italiana nei libri di provenienza medio-orientale.

I give a 5 to Keret and a 3 to El-Youssef. The final piece by El-Youssef seemed to go a bit in circles and without a strong intent. I think the author wanted to demonstrate the restless nature of the main character and how his life is based on drugs and last options, but meh. Keret, on the other hand, was funny, had something important to say in each story, and delivered his message in a way that was not heavy-handed.

bardzo dobre, bardzo krótkie. keret zawsze umiejętnie wplata fantazję do rzeczywistości, przedstawiając izraelskie realia, ale w dość magiczny sposób, wręcz surrealistyczny. nigdy nie wiem, jak dane opowiadanie może się zakończyć.

uwielbiam kereta, naprawdę. aczkolwiek myślę, że wiele w tym zasługi przekładów, którym należy poświęcić chwilę uwagi — są świetne.

Schräge Geschichten, denen man manchmal die geografische Verortung anmerkt, manchmal nicht. Plausible, irrationale, unerwartete Wendungen machen die Kurzgeschichten des Bandes - in denen auch der Autor selbst schonmal auftritt - zu einem kurzweiligen Lesevergnügen.

i liked many of these stories better than keret's newer short fiction. the borderline-absurdist standpoint doesn't strike me as being all that effective. maybe i missed the point.
