Being a forty-something, newly divorced, single mom can have its ups and downs, but discovering that I possess elemental witch magic has turned the downs deadly. As a new practitioner of tru-craft, I’ve been told that every witch is called to a single element, and they are sent down one of two paths, the Fade or the Bright.
In my case, that’s simply not true. I’ve mastered Fire and Earth, almost at the cost of my life, and I can’t help but wonder what lethal path Air will blow me down.
About Renee: USA Today Bestselling author Renee George writes paranormal mysteries and romances because she loves all things whodunit, Otherworldly, and weird. Also, she wishes her pittie, the adorable Kona Princess Warrior, and her beagle, Josie the Incontinent Princess, could talk. Or at least be more like Scooby-Doo and help her unmask villains at the haunted house up the street.
When she’s not writing about mystery-solving werecougars or the adventures of a hapless psychic living among shapeshifters, she is preyed upon by stray kittens who end up living in her house because she can't say no to those sweet, furry faces. (Someone stop telling them where she lives!)
She resides in Mid-Missouri with her family and spends her non-writing time doing really cool stuff...like watching TV and cleaning up dog poop.

Story opens with Iris trying to get a handle on her air magic – she is getting thrown around Keir’s yard by a tornado that she is trying to control and get rid of. Luckily Linda comes to help. Linda arrives to let Iris know that her garden has been over ridden with Pixies and they are insisting that Iris must protect them until their new children are born. There is a new twist that Michael’s new football coach seems to be magical as well but not sure if he will be a friend or a foe. Iris seems to be having more struggles trying to get a handle on this new power. It also seems that the Archdruid has been keeping an eye on her and wants to meet her. Curious what happens when she goes for the visit.
Great characters, fun read, and lots of twists and turns to keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning.
Iris has a new craft to conquer. Pixies to protect, and family to keep safe. And that's only the basics. All this while trying not to destroy the town or herself.
Another incredible addition to the series that had me turning pages without stop while laughing and gasping along the way! WOW! When Iris a newly discovered Tru-craft witch is only trying to control her Earth and Fire craft and now she has a newly discovered Air craft that just put her into trouble again! She awakened the Pixie ritual that had another 800 years to go and now she has vowed to take protect them from pixie hunters until they can fulfill their ritual. If that is not enough, you have her talking, grouchy Gnome and mentor, Linda, who won't do anything to help her with the pixies since she has a lifelong grudge against them. And Linda likes to pelt Iris with stones. Let's add to that, the one sorcerer who has been trying to kill her and steal her magic is loose and will definitely be looking for Iris. And if that is not enough, there are battles, her son's new football coach is not what you expect, a Grimoire that keeps talking in riddles and some bodily disintegration as well as a family intervention since they don't know she's a witch and they think she's gone off the deep end. WHAT? Oh yes, there is more, but you have to read this book to see it all and get ready to laugh along the way. Thank goodness she has Keir who is bound to her and her true love, his sister who is ready for a fight, guns and knives included and Zev who is friends with them and the only sister who knows about her being a witch, Marigold. I absolutely love this series and highly recommend you read the first two books as well! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
When the Spell Blows Midlife Grimoire Book 3 Release date: 29th July 2022
Iris is a tru-craft witch. Instead of possessing magic for one element, she posses the magic of three known elements, possibly more. This book charts the development of the third; air. In the first book she discovered unexpected powers, tried to nurture and control them with the help of a grumpy bearded garden gnome called Linda, her cat/imp familiar Bob and a strange yet sexy Druid, Keir, the other half of her. Iris' team soon expanded with Keir's sister Lu joining the call to arms. And then in this installment we get the horny pixies. Lu, also a kick ass druidess, goes on side missions for the Iron Grove, the ruling body of the North American druids; I'd love to see her get her own series, urban fantasy perhaps with kicking ass and sexy times. Certainly more scenes with the Druids is hinted at. Additional creatures and/or characters we find in this one, include Sylva, a mythical being, and the initial scene with him is hilarious. Plus the return of sexy ifrit Zev. He's a terrific creation and again, deserves his own book. Amidst all of the magical drama that soon comes, family issues come in to play, and Iris is almost juggling plates to keep on top of it. I like the extra dimension of the family being involved and watching Iris try to manage everything - much like her experience as a mom taught her. This is sometimes romantic and sexy, laugh out loud funny, sweet, emotional and fraught with danger. I look forward to what happens to our "intrepid -certainly-not-the-Avengers" heroes next. Great stuff.
Her guardian gnome Linda cannot be animated in the presence of non magicals- and Iris really needs guidance.
But stresses build as she hides her witchly gifts from her siblings. Imagine, as a battle witch, Iris has faced a lot of challenges.
How would you interpret unexplained bruises if it were your sister?
The football team moms are a force unto themselves. Having lost their winning coach when he moved away with her ex does not win Iris any happy points - one could hope these moms might try to be more kind to Michael, the son who was left behind. Expecting maturity from crowds of parents is rarely anything disappointing, in my experience as an educator.
Will Iris destroy herself trying to face her challenges without offered assistance? At what cost yo her son Michael, or others close to her, like her Dad or her siblings?
Intense drama and action, that has the potential to literally blow Iris away.
Just as Iris is learning to harness her earth and fire powers, she gains a new element - air. She is struggling to master her air power when her guardian gnome Linda comes to tell her that pixies have invaded her yard. It seems that Iris’s chaotic, uncontrolled magic has ignited the pixies mating ritual 800 years too early. They now need Iris’s protection until their babies are born. As if Iris didn’t already have enough on her plate, her son’s new football coach is not exactly human and Iris’s family has decided it is time she come clean about her emotional issues. This is a great addition to the Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch series. Several new characters were a lot of fun and hopefully will show up again, especially pixies Fair Konig and Annibish. I highly recommend this book and series.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator does a great job bringing the story to life.
When the Spell Blows is a terrific addition to this series. I recommend reading the earlier books first. Iris has come to her magic later in life. She was adopted as a child and not raised in the craft. She is winging it with the help of a gnarly gnome with an attitude, a guy who claims to be her soul mate and her own wit and wisdom she’s garnered through life. Unlike most Tru-craft witches Iris has been gifted with multiple elements to call. She’s survived fire and earth but air might just kill her unless she can let go and go with the flow. Not something she’s good at. I really enjoy this series and this is a fantastic addition. I can identify with Iris’s struggles and was thrilled when she finds support in unexpected places.
I got this in a 3-book set. I didn't realize originally that it was another Paranormal Women's Fiction thing. I just saw the author. I have found her amusing previously, so decided to try the series anyway. The books were, no doubt, well-written and well-plotted and all that. A perfectly good addition to the genre. They did not appeal to me, however. I made it through the first two books and into the third, but I just could not do anymore. The characters did not particularly appeal to me and they really would have had to for me to develop any interest in the series. I have to say that if I had seen the covers of the individual books, I would not have been tempted to investigate at all.
Iris was having a difficult and dangerous time trying to control not just two but three powers anymore. Ignoring what her magic requires has done her no good and her actions were having repercussions. Iris receives a lot of advice and attention to them is very important. Interesting and entertaining how the family drama unfolds, the new responsibility and the threats that hang over them. I find it pleasant how Iris's relationship with her druid is strengthening, Linda and her story caught my attention and I like the strong union of Iris's family. Action, suspense, pixies, gnomes, magic, funny situations, villains, danger, romance and lots of adventure. Eager for Iris next challenge.
When the Spell Blows by Renee George is an awesome book! This 3rd book of This fantastic series, Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch is the best yet. This series just gets better and better. Poor Iris struggles so much with this new magic, but she's got so much support and love behind her. The characters and supers who pop up in these book are such a blast, totally different than anything else you've read before. And without a doubt, Renee George is The Queen of pop culture references!!! Lol!! If you're looking for a fun, exciting adventure... This is The series for you!
When the Spell Blows by Renee George is the third book in the Grimoirs of a Middle-Aged Witch series. Iris is a recently divorced, single mom who discovers a grimoire and magic that is ready to be set loose.
This series is so much fun and When the Spell Blows is no exception. This story is a fun page-turner full of magic, a snarky Gnome, mischievous Pixies, Pookas, and more. A guilty pleasure that you won’t want to put down.
The characters are interesting and my favorite is Linda, a snarky guardian Gnome whose favorite thing to do is throw rocks at Iris to keep her on her toes. I recommend reading the series in order as each book builds on the one before it.
Mastering her new air-craft, protecting pixies and their dust, dodging rocks thrown at her by Linda-the-gnome, and making amends with her grimoire...it's just another day in Iris's crazy, chaotic life. Thankfully, she has her soulmate Keir and her crew of family, friends, and guardians to help get her through.
I love this series so hard! It's always interesting, entertaining, and you never know what's gonna happen next.
Many thanks to the author and BookFunnel for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
What can I say the gang is all here and ready to rumble. My favorite gnome Linda is back and feisty as ever. Iris is still getting use to her powers and Keir is more in love with his reluctant witch.
There is no end of shenanigans for this group to run from and run too. Did I mention "Pixies" they are the guess of the hour. The book will have you laughing and smiling.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In this book, Iris is learning how to use her air witchcraft. A bunch of pixies show up for protection and she feels that she must protect them since her magic started their fertility up 1000 years sooner than it should. She also has to contend with a wraith and Michael's coach. Can she learn how to harness her magic before it consumes her? I love this book by Renee George.
Iris is back and she is having a heck of a time she created an event that caused havoc in the Pixie world and now they have decided that Iris is responsible and will have to handle the problem but the problem causes additional issues along with her magic, her son, and her family are almost too much to handle but she has plenty of help. Drama, suspense, danger, and love. I read a copy via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Throw in with a never quiet grimoire who can give more than a migraine or two and raunchy pixies added in the mix. It’s a magical nightmare that even her druid boyfriend can’t stop the madness.
A fun read that will take you a wild ride. Sit back and enjoy this delightful adventure.
Very enjoyable and entertaining read. Plenty of intense drama and action to keep you hooked from beginning to end. Overall a fun read looking forward to the next book in this series. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are completely my own.
Iris and Keir are back with friends and family, old and new. Poor Iris is feeling overwhelmed with family commitments, a new element to master and a swarm of pixies taking over her garden. I enjoy these books so much! It’s wonderful having main characters close to me in age who aren’t depicted as old and decrepit, but instead enjoy life and their relationships.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership)
To harness the wind seems to be the hardest element of all. Iris is having a hard time with the third element, but with the help of family and friends, she overcomes her own fears as well as keeping a promise to a troop of pixies to keep them safe, whilst their children are conceived and born.
Another new earth craft to master! She'd had enough trouble and been in enough danger with the others trying to master them. This time the number of things she has to deal with is more than she can count and oh wow—let's just say the counting isn't going to get easier. Mastering the craft isn't all she has to worry about.
I love her Keir. After her jerk of a husband became an ex and for the reason he did, she deserves a good guy—and a hot one. Luckily her son likes Keir, too. She's gonna need his support, Keir, that is.
I don't want to give away anything so I'll just say never a dull moment. Friends and enemies new and old, some light chemistry, and best of all a great story. Life after forty sure isn't boring for Iris and her gang.
This series just keeps getting better with every book! I loved reading about Iris learning about her wind magic, the pixies, her family dynamic, just everything! It was fun and kept me on edge with what was going to happen next. Just amazing!
Another great adventure trying to gain control of yet another element. Seeing Iris grow and trust in those around her and bringing the rest of her family into her confidence was fantastic. I can't wait to hear the splash of the next story!
Renee treats us with another great book! Book 3 in this series doesn’t disappoint as Iris unlocks aero-craft. As with the previous two books, this one is full of drama and action and plot twists! Will Iris conquer aero-craft or will aero-craft conquer her?
Was waiting a while for this one. Author has several series in the works, so I get it. But wow what a way to keep me interested. I actually prefer the new cover of this one. But the writing….well that’s just genious.
3 1/2 ⭐️ Iris, a new true craft witch, has sparked air magic. She must learn to control it or die. Iris has a big family and an 18 year old son, which puts a bit of a spin on this story. I enjoy the parenting dynamic.
Very entertaining. Pixies show up in Iris's Garden and Linda is not happy. There is a new football coach in town and Keir thinks he could be a sorcerer. Iris has to master her new aerocraft before she disappears. She needs a coven and they have to be people that are important to her.
Another great addition to the series. I love how things are progressing and watching Iris try to navigate being a newly single mom as well as discovering how to handle her powers.
Don’t miss out on this great cozy story in the Grimoires of a Middle Aged Witch series. Linda the Gnome is snarky and sassy! Can’t wait for the next one.
